The Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan might have lost a little of its lustre in recent years, attracting criticism in some industry quarters for failing to adapt to emerging social and technological trends, but it remains one of the key dates in the agendas of designers and home decoration professionals throughout the world. Tribute Concert In Mijas Auditorium

Long-time Costa del Sol resident Andy Claridge is just one of many musicians around the world who have been influenced by Pink Floyd, the iconic British band formed 50 years ago. In 1990, after touring with Squeeze and working on studio recordings with Phil Collins, Andy had a dream of producing his own Pink Floyd tribute show. The production has grown over the years and in 2008, when Andy teamed up with Steve Nelson (another highly respected musician living on the Coast), the show was expanded both musically and visually.

Earlier this year Andy was approached by a promoter who offered the show a 16-concert tour of northern Europe in August, and they will be performing this dazzling new show at a special open-air concert in the Mijas auditorium on Friday 27 June.

Marbella-based golfer Patricia Lobato has secured sponsorship from Nike this year, with the company providing her with the latest equipment. European Tour action returns to Sotogrande

After a previous season uncharacteristically out of the European Tour spotlight, the Costa del Sol made a welcome first step back onto centre stage with the inaugural NH Collection Open at one of Europe’s most highly rated courses, La Reserva de Sotogrande, in April. The event was played under the dual auspices of the main European Tour and the European Challenge Tour, so missed the main European stars who were regular visitors during the golden era of the Volvo Masters and 1997 Ryder Cup (at nearby Valderrama), and numerous other leading Tour championships over the past four decades, but was nevertheless welcomed as a positive development by local tourism authorities, who hope it will become a permanent date on the annual schedule. The event was also excellent news for 35-year-old Italian Marco Crespi, who survived the gruelling Qualifying School test at his 11th attempt in November to earn a first season on the European Tour, and completed victory in Sotogrande in only his 25th career start. Previously he had won twice on the Challenge Tour.

Journalist Chris Spencer-Payne was highly commended in the category for “New Talent” for his articles in Sur in English on football in Málaga.

Uniting Spanish and Arab cultures in Marbella

The Kasser Rassu gallery hosted the exhibition “El Mediterráneo como tierra de pasión”, organised by the Al-Andalus Art and Cultural Foundation with painter Amesa (Antonia Mesa) and sculptor Miguel Moreno.

This was the first of a series of events the Al-Andalus Foundation plans to carry out during the year “to bring Andalucian art into the cultures of both sides of the Mediterranean”.

The foundation was officially launched earlier in the year during a special presentation at the gallery presided over by the president, Bashir Habbal, vice president Dana Nakib and public relations director Marie-Noëlle Eriz. According to Bashir Habbal, the non-profit organisation’s aim is “to promote and publicise the cultural, palpable and abstract heritage of Andalucía, establishing agreements and alliances for action with the Arab world and especially with the people who had great historical significance in the development of Al-Andalus, and the promotion of artists and writers.” www.alandalusfoundation.org

Travertine has taken the world by storm. It is a natural stone and comes in a variety of sizes, shades and characters. It is formed in hot springs or in limestone caves as opposed to marble or limestone, which falls into the metamorphic rock category. Travertine stone has holes within it, caused by a lack of carbon dioxide. The typical thickness of a travertine tile would be around 13 millimetres. Usually, travertine is cross cut, which means the blocks are rotated and cut across the vein. As with a tree, when you cut travertine vertically the veins are not visible; but if you cut horizontally you can see the veins.

For a natural earthy feel, slate is extremely effective. It is 100 per cent natural, long-lasting and environmentally friendly because it does not release any harmful substances into the environment and is recyclable. But, like most materials,

there are different grades of quality – with the finest slate mined from underground. Good quality slate is non-porous, and stain and slip-resistant, whereas slate of an inferior quality is sourced from the ground’s surface, making it is less durable and more porous due to weathering.

Marble is one of the oldest natural materials but is still used today and works best when you are aiming to achieve an opulent classic look. Marble is durable and easy to maintain. It is quarried in the same way as granite and soapstone, with each piece of marble being completely unique, and it can be found in an enormous range of colours and patterns. Marble has been used for years for floors and to keep a home cool during the warmer months; and, due to its heatresistant qualities, is often found on kitchen countertops.

Quartzite is a decorative stone and is often found on walls, as roof tiles and for floors, and is slowly entering the kitchen for countertops. It is more durable and more stain-resistant than granite. Quartzite is also sparkly, giving it a depth and shine.

Sandstone is known for its characteristic grainy appearance and tactile appeal.

This material has been used in construction and home-ware since prehistoric times. It is a relatively soft stone that is easy to cut and is often used when making statues or fountains. Some sandstones are weather-resistant and it is a popular building and paving material. Limestone’s soft texture and neutral colour tone are often used in kitchens or bathrooms due to its ability to stand up to wet environments. This calcareous stone is generally light in colour and has a delicate shell and mineral mottling, making it great for wall tiles.

Stone tiles can make the room feel much larger than it actually is, which is of particular benefit for a smaller property. Other advantages are that they are hard-wearing and easy to maintain, can be used inside or outside, and can cool down a home during the hot summer months – while providing an upmarket and unique look as no two stone tiles are exactly the same.

It may sound like stating the obvious but we sometimes overlook the fact that sleep not only makes us feel refreshed and in a better mood but it also helps us process and recall information, eases the stress of everyday pressures and, most importantly, can reduce health risks, benefiting both the mind and body. In short, sleep quantity and quality play a key role in the broad spectrum of our day-to-day – and evening – lifestyles.

Heading into the warmer months of the year means we have to reorganise our bedding so that we are more comfortable when we sleep. The duvets are stored away and the lighter bed covers adorn our beds. Neutral colours such as white, creams, light grey and beige are popular as they give a luxurious hotel feel, making the room feel serene, airy and sanitary – the perfect place to retreat to. If you like a flash of colour, a colourful throw at the foot of your bed makes a wonderful accent and completes the look. Neutral-coloured bedding can also compliment a patterned or colourful wallpaper, bedside cabinet or rug, toning down the busyness of a room.

So how do you choose the right bedding for you?

Natural fibres such as silk, flax and cotton are unique in their forms, which make them attractive aesthetically. Also, being porous, they are very comfortable in warm temperatures – allowing your skin to breathe and giving you the best environment for sleep. It is always advisable to remove them quickly after washing, or dry them rapidly, to avoid creasing as natural fibres do have a tendency to scrunch up, unlike synthetic fibres such as polyester or acrylic.

Cotton has always been a popular choice for bedding and it comes in different forms. Long staple cotton is the best quality as it is shiny, supple, durable and soft to the touch. Linens such as Egyptian or Pima are long staple cotton.

Intermediate staple cotton usually has a maximum thread count of around 230, which is good quality but may not be as radiant and svelte as long staple cotton. Short staple cotton is rarely found in bedding as it is not very durable and is quite rough.

For those who are more ecologically conscious, organic cotton is not genetically modified and is farmed in a way that does not cause a serious impact on the environment, as it is not cultivated by non-organic fertilisers for more than three years.

There is also combed cotton, which is only applicable to the highest quality cotton, that which is long-lasting and possesses a high thread count. Combed cotton cleans the yarn and makes it finer and glossier.

Linen absorbs moisture and keeps you cool over the summer months. It helps to repel insects, is hygienic and becomes softer over time. It is a strong fabric but can crease quite easily.

Silk is also very absorbent and insulates you in the colder months while cooling you down in the warmer months. Much attention needs to be paid when washing silk as it is extremely fragile.

Artificial fibres are derived from cellulose or plant proteins and are usually identified on labels – such as rayon or viscose. They are generally more resistant and possess the same qualities as natural fibres, but take care as they are more susceptible to shrinkage when washed.

Blends consist of two or more different types of fibres, with the highest percentage usually dominating the quality and look of the fabric. So for example, a blended sheet that consists of a high percentage of cotton linen will be slightly stiff in its form with a natural sheen and will be strong and less likely to shrink than a fabric made of 100 per cent linen.

Thread count has always been considered an important factor when choosing bed linen but the higher the thread count does not necessarily reflect its quality: it only signifies how many threads are woven within a square centimetre. There is an element of misinterpretation with thread count as some manufacturers will state a higher thread count because they entwine several plies (or fibres) together to make one thread and count each fibre as part of their thread count, whereas other manufacturers will count one thread as being just one. The most long-lasting fabrics are made with single ply construction, resulting in softer and more lightweight fabric. Those made with multiple ply yarns will usually weigh more than those made with single yarns.

Another important factor to consider when choosing bedding is the type of weave. A plain weave is most commonly found in bedding because it is very durable due to the way each yarn crosses over another. Bedding with plain weave is usually crisp and soft to the touch.

Twill weaves are a little more expensive and also make strong fabric due to the diagonal rib. The fibres stick out on a twill weave, making the fabric extremely soft and easy to brush down.

Sateen weaves usually have a higher thread count, producing a denser fabric that is shiny and silky. Make sure that the thread count is high with sateen weaves, as they do otherwise have a tendency to pull.

Patterned weaves are trickier to produce but are long-lasting – even if they come with a high price tag. There are two types of fabrics made with the patterned weave: Dobby is cheaper and less complicated in its design, whereas Jacquard is more technical and uses a better quality yarn, making it more expensive.

So, when choosing bedding, quality is determined by many different attributes. The threads of the fabric should not be moveable so, when you scratch it, the threads hold their position. Colour in the material should be consistent throughout the fabric and should not have worn away in a fold or crease, which would suggest that a low quality dye was used. If there is any powder on the material it can mean that the fabric has been over-sized and is of inferior quality.

NATURAL SLEEP PATTERNS Robert Lancaster-Gaye, managing director of UK-based Best Bed Linen (www.thebestbedlinenintheworld.com), offers some helpful suggestions on how to achieve the “perfect sleep setting”…

• Bed linen made from 100 per cent cotton will ensure a much more satisfactory night’s sleep. For optimum comfort and care the ideal threadcount is 400 percale as it offers the ultimate in softness, whiteness, weight and durability.

• Never use a second-hand mattress.

• Choose a pillow that is both soft and supportive for the head and neck – for example, a mix of feather and down.

• Consider blackout curtains to prevent being woken prematurely.

• Our body temperature drops during sleep so ensure your duvet is warm enough for the winter months to avoid waking in the night.

And for pillows…

• Replace pillows every two years once they’ve lost their height and have become misshapen and discoloured. Research shows that an old, unwashed pillow can contain up to 10 per cent of its own weight in dead skin cells and dust mites. However, the life of a pillow can be extended by using pillow protectors.

• A good pillow should be supportive and hold the head in the correct position, in alignment with the shoulders and spine – the same position as if standing. The pillow should be tucked into the neck and shoulders to ensure the head is fully supported.

• If you sleep on your side, a thicker pillow or two thinner ones are recommended.

• There is a wide range of pillows available: goose down, duck, down, feather, microfibre… and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit all personal tastes. Pillows are subjective, so choose one that suits your sleep requirements.

BODY COMFORT THE KEY One innovation that “changed the perception of sleep” was the revolutionary Jensen Zone System, presented on the market in 1998. The system provides proper support for the entire body when at rest, including the curve of the back, in combination with a soft shoulder zone, “which is the key to an optimal sleep experience”.

According to Jensen (www.jensenstore.com), the system is based on self-evident and natural principles.

“Most people are broader in the hip and shoulder areas and narrower and heavier around the waist. Given that the main purpose of the mattress is to effectively support the body, the division into zones provides more equal and comfortable support where the shoulders and hips sink deeper into the mattress, with firmer support for the narrower and heavier waist area. The effect is the same irrespective of whether you lie on your back or on your side.”

If the mattress is too hard, explains Jensen, the hips and body do not sink into the mattress, which results in a lack of support. “If the mattress is too soft, the body sinks too far into the mattress, as it would in a hammock. The spine becomes unnaturally curved. The perfect mattress provides an even and comfortable support for your body. The hips and shoulders sink into the mattress, while at the same time perfectly supporting your waist and lower back.”

TREND-SETTING EXCELLENCE IN MILAN Doubling as “something of a rehearsal for Expo 2015”, the latest edition of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile offered buyers, designers and journalists a trendsetting array of “Made in Italy” furniture and home accessories.

“Our goal was to make this the best Salone del Mobile in the world,” said Salone president Claudio Luti, “and the results have far exceeded our expectations.”

The 53rd edition of the Salone del Mobile notched up a total of 357,212 visitors, 311,781 of them sectoral operators – up 13 per cent on the 2013 edition.”

According to Luti, significant recognition of the industry’s importance came from prime minister Matteo Renzi, when he visited the fair and acknowledged that the furniture sector was a strategic strand in Italy’s real economy, “a sign there was still life in Italy, a country that was overcoming the credit crisis thanks to its extraordinary manufacturing ethos and the excellent supply chain underpinning products and design research.

Roberto Snaidero, president of FederlegnoArredo, also noted that the 2014 Salone had confirmed the crucial role of exports for the sector. “Almost half our manufacturing sales over the last year have been to other countries, as the strong presence of foreign visitors shows only too clearly.”

Historic Honour for Swedish Company Design and innovation consultancy Veryday has become the first Swedish company to be awarded the prestigious “Red Dot: Design Team of the Year” title.

Announced at the opening of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, the award recognises international design teams “whose work is continually characterised by innovative achievements in the field” and honours a corporate strategy “by which innovative quality products sustainably influence business success”.

CREATING ORIGINAL AND HARMONIOUS DESIGNS

What originally brought you to the Costa del Sol? I was born in Germany and went to school in Barcelona to learn Spanish… I think after the first trip I really fell in love with Spain and in 2000 I decided to move to Marbella.

What is it you like most about living on the Costa del Sol? The friendly people and sunny weather, of course, but also the diversity of landscape; you can go from a morning ski in Sierra Nevada and be on the beach by dusk to enjoy a glass of wine. I love the outdoors, so being able to go skiing, hiking with my dogs through the beautiful nature or walking on the beach with friends is invigorating and very important to me. Then you also have great restaurants and fun nightlife, so I find that it creates the perfect balance and makes the Costa del Sol what it is.

What prompted you to set up your business and how are you different to other interior designers?

Design has always been my big passion, and I love Spain, which is why I decided to open Ambience in Marbella in 2002, and my vision has always been to expand. We currently have offices in Spain and Portugal. This enables us to attend

to the international market and we’re very pleased with our growth.

I think what sets any designer apart from the rest is originality in design, healthy work ethics and diversity. Ambience offers a vast range of services and is affiliate with the top brands and suppliers in the market. We solely collaborate with experienced professionals and bespoke furniture suppliers here in Marbella. We are perfectionists when it comes to design, quality control, great service and, also very importantly, great after-sales service. We help our clients until the last candle is set and their internet works properly.

What are the latest trends and how do you see the future of interior design in Marbella?

I think environmentally friendly design is picking up. I hope to see more designs that incorporate features that blend with Marbella’s stunning surroundings.

What are the benefits of having an interior designer?

I find that getting the advice of an experienced interior designer can make all the difference to the final outcome of a property and can actually save you both time and money. It’s what we do on a daily basis and what we specialise in. From experience we know what works and what doesn’t and we have a vast array of

ideas and solutions for residential, commercial and public spaces, aimed at making the most of our client’s investment.

When designing a property, the most important thing is to understand our client’s vision. We study the existing distribution and recommend changes in the layout that will maximise space, maybe even suggest opening up an area to create a desired effect or adding a feature for the wow factor. We customdesign everything.

We look at the property as a whole to make sure there is a seamless and harmonious design throughout. We pay special attention to important areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, keeping in mind that these must bear the wear and tear of everyday use. We carefully select materials such as floors, wall finishes and colour scheme, and finally choose window dressings and furniture, so that the décor and layout compliment each other.

For commercial projects, we do a preliminary study of the company’s products and services, their clientele, their corporate image, and find a way to enhance the customer experience, whether it be a restaurant, bar, hotel or office.

We provide our clients with 3D renders that will show them precisely what the

converted space will look like, before commencing any works. This way they know exactly what they are getting.

We invest a lot of time in research and keep up to date with the latest technology, design trends and materials. This is why we are able to advise on the best approach.

What are the inspirations behind your work?

I get my inspiration from different sources: travelling, nature, furniture fairs, fashion, people, architecture and simple things like street art. And then when I speak to my clients and they start describing what they have in mind it just triggers it off.

What originally brought you to the Costa del Sol? After having a very successful business in the UK, I stepped down as director of the family business and passed the business over to my son. I moved to Spain to semi-retire in the sun and to have a more relaxed lifestyle.

What is it you like most about living on the Costa del Sol? I love the climate and the relaxed way of life. I enjoy having a business here on the Coast as I have some fantastic clients and at the same time I can work in a beautiful part of the world.

What prompted you to set up your business and why glass curtains?

At the time I was semi-retired, I was fortunate to have friends and colleagues in Spain with experience in the glazing business, and the opportunity arose to start Elite Glass Curtains in 2006

The Importance of Home Staging At the last look on the agents’ shared database, there were 23,689 properties for sale on the Costa del Sol. That’s a lot of properties! It’s little wonder that property hunters remain convinced that it’s a buyer’s market, although the truth of the matter is that we currently have a market in which 80 per cent of buyers are chasing 20 per cent of the stock. So what sets these properties apart as the hot ones… and how can you ensure that your property maximises its appeal?

The vast majority of overseas property searches begin online. The internet is the “shop window” for your property, whether you like it or not. So how does your property look online?

Make sure that the photographs of your property were taken on a sunny day with a wide-angled lens. Is the main photo really “selling” your property effectively?

For someone to make an enquiry about your property online, they have to be impressed by the photography, so make sure that your home looks its absolute best

when an agent takes the photographs.

If the photos of your home look attractive, and the property is priced correctly for the area, you will then start to receive viewings from potential buyers. Bear in mind that most buyers will be looking at several properties, probably of a similar type, style and price to yours, so you need to make your property stand out as the obvious choice for them.

You need to try to establish the show-home factor. First impressions count for everything: your property needs to be well-lit, tastefully furnished, free from clutter and smells, and ideally free from pets and crying toddlers!

The kitchen and bathrooms in particular need to be free from debris, beds need to be made, and the whole place should be spotlessly clean. Buyers have to imagine themselves relaxing in your living area, sleeping in your bedrooms, showering in your bathroom. If the sofa is stained, the bedding is dirty or there is mould in the shower tray, you’re going to have a problem.

Yes, it takes time, effort and often a little financial invest-

ment to stage a property to full effect… and it may still take many viewings to attract the right buyer. But I can assure you that in my 13 years’ experience of selling property on the Costa del Sol the vendors that follow this advice have much greater success when selling.

If you want to give your outdoor space a little Zen touch find a spot where you can spread some white pebbles and, why not, incorporate a sculpture or water feature.

Blossoming shrubs… they are inexpensive and they really change a space. Check out Dimorphothecas: you will have them flowering until September and you can obtain them in many colours.

And here comes my favourite: a vertical garden. You can find them in any size and hang them on terraces with full sun or shade, or even in interior spaces.

Discovering London’s Evening Charms Paris was the city of the twenties, Berlin the thirties, Rome the fifties, and London ever since. It’s an amazing place to live or visit, offering the best of everything from simple pubs to river walks, and budget hotels to places where you can ritz it up. And then there are the theatres, galleries and museums that take the breath away.

But for some there was often something lacking: where to go after dinner. There are clubs tucked away here and there, but the best are usually members only.

So back to the pub?

Now there is a good place to end the evening — the Radio Rooftop bar at the ME London Hotel. It’s fun to head to Aldwych, where the Strand joins Fleet Street, and take the special elevator to the bar with a terrace and a view, definitely not a usual London experience.

You will see Tower Bridge, the Shard, London Bridge, Saint Paul’s Cathedral, Tate Modern, Somerset House, Southbank, London Eye, Houses of Parliament and Covent Garden. It’s London at night!

hit by bombs in the Second World War, while next door is Marconi House, former headquarters of the BBC, where the first radio broadcast was made in 1922. Today it is in the heart of theatreland.

Of course it’s also a good place to stay if you arrive with a suitcase, particularly if you enjoy the avant-garde, modern look of clean lines and laser colour. The rooms, which have views of the River Thames, impressed Conde Nast Traveller, which awarded the hotel a spot in its 2013 Hotlist. Other reviews pick out the bedroom lighting, which includes neon; some appreciate the quiet.

Dining has a New York edge with STK London, Cucina Asellina and the Radio Rooftop bar, which impressed with tasty bites that nicely complemented the cocktails. One other thing: you’ll find a DJ there, which usually means deafening music so conversation goes out of the window. Not here. This bar works.

There’s a gym, and open 24 hours a day. Then there’s the Aura department, there to wrap around you an aura, an energy… brought to you with music, lighting and maybe the cocktails. Or are they referring to the concierge?

Be prepared for surprises at the ME London, part of the Spanish Meliá group, a hotel with the wow factor in an engaging part of London.

YACHT ISLAND DESIGN

Weaving a Story into Themed Boating When the team at Yacht Island Design set themselves the goal of introducing a new era in luxury yachting, they decided to base their first proposal on Monaco.

Transporting the principality to the ocean, the 155-metre SWATH concept is built predominantly in steel with the use of aluminium in the upper superstructure. With a maximum speed of 15 knots she transports her 70 crew and 16 guests using diesel electric propulsion.

According to the designers, “The art of producing a themed yacht is to seamlessly weave a story into every element of the design… This focus allows the creation of a truly unique environment from the overall exterior shape down to the smallest interior detail.”

The design theme for this first of several planned concept proposals centres around three main communal areas: “The Streets of Monaco”, “The Oasis” and “The Grand Atrium”.

“The Streets of Monaco” is the focal point of the story and the anchor for the themes that run throughout the yacht, revolving around a recreation of the famous Monaco Grand Prix race circuit. This fully functional kart circuit sets the stage for other famous locations seen on a lap of the principality, including the Casino, Hotel de Paris, Cafe de Paris, La Rascasse and Loews hotel and tunnel complex.

“The Oasis”, located aft, acts as the main boarding point for the yacht, an expansive area modelled on the gardens just outside the Monaco Casino.

“The Grand Atrium” is the central hub of the yacht, linking the upper and lower living areas. The seven guest suites are located off of the lower atrium level and vary in size from 135 to 356 square metres. All include their own reception room, bathroom, dressing room, bedroom and balcony, and the VIP suites have the added luxury of a private office.

Other key features include a multi-configurable sports court sized to championship tennis regulations that also doubles as a heli-pad, and sea-level “Beach” decks situated aft in both struts.

Yacht Island Design selected the SWATH platform as its prime focus, for its sea-keeping ability and exceptionally wide beam, allowing for the “exploration of bold and daring design ideas without the restrictions of a conventional hull shape”.

Innovative Electric Driving Concept Offers

“Sustainable Exhilaration”

In developing the BladeGlider concept, Nissan wanted to think outside the box. The aim was to create an EV that “truly symbolises the unlimited potential of electric propulsion - balancing zero emissions with innovative excitement like never before… from ‘driving’ to ‘gliding’ in a hyper-agile and ultimately efficient EV that shifts the engineering paradigm to reveal a new dimension of driving fun and excitement”.

It is more than just a concept, however: the BladeGlider has been developed as both a proposal for the future direction of Nissan electric vehicle (EV) development and an exploratory prototype of an upcoming production vehicle. Nissan crafted the vehicle’s unique architecture “to give the driver and passengers ‘sustainable exhilaration’ - a fresh electric vehicle driving experience based on peerless technology and exotic styling”.

Francois Bancon, division general manager of product strategy and product planning at Nissan, led the project, and was given a clean slate as the starting point. “The goal was to revolutionise the architecture of the vehicle to provoke new emotions, provide new value and make visible for consumers how zero emissions can help redefine our conception of vehicle basics,” he explains.

The BladeGlider has its conceptual roots in two aerial images: the soaring, silent, panoramic freedom of a glider and the triangular shape of a high performance “swept wing” aircraft. In terms of engineering, its developmental focus was aerodynamics: achieving low drag (cdA) while generating roadhugging downforce. To power the electric motors, BladeGlider employs Nissan’s lithium-ion battery technology, proven.

Cutting-Edge Creativity in Marbella The delightful Témpora Restaurante in Marbella’s Old Town is coming up to its second anniversary, serving fresh, seasonal and creative dishes put together with meticulous attention to detail.

Michelin-Star Delicacies with a Sprinkling of Fantasy

Andalucía’s only Michelin two-star chef, Dani García, has written a new chapter of his celebrated culinary tale, with the opening in April of two original restaurant concepts in Marbella. Following the decision to move his local operations from Calima (in the Gran Meliá Don Pepe hotel) to Hotel Puente Romano, García has also taken the opportunity of creating two distinctive fine dining establishments: his main eponymous restaurant offering a tasting menu and a la carte; and the BiBo Andalucian Brasserie & Tapas, with a varied selection of Spanish and international cuisine.

The 2014 menu at Dani García Restaurante – which maintains its two Michelin stars – has been launched as “Once Upon a Time”, with the objective of giving the Costa del Sol-born chef full freedom to let his imagination flow – “a gastronomic journey through the world of fairytales”.

With his New York restaurant, Manzanilla NYC, having closed earlier this year after just 12 months (a decision made by his main business partner, in spite of good reviews for his “American-style” take on traditional and contemporary Spanish cuisine), García says he is pleased to have been able to create a new personal project “without interferences and with which (he) can identify 100 per cent”.

He was philosophical after the New York closure, noting that the experience had been enriching, but he had been restricted in presenting his full portfolio of creative skills.

Also able to savour some reinvigorated “freedom” at the new restaurant are his diners. Each client has the option of “entering the interesting world of ‘Once Upon a Time’” or choosing from the a la carte menu.

The adjourning BiBo, meanwhile, offers a “fun experience with no borders”, adapted to the cosmopolitan tastes of diners, in a relaxed ambience, incorporating García’s global vision of cuisine, and “reviving the tradition of the legendary European brasseries”. It includes a Raw Bar & Oyster Bar, and offers organic produce from his own vegetable garden, cold meat cuts, steaks grilled over holm oak embers, or roasted in an oven heated using olive tree firewood, and a wide and varied range of tapas and dishes.

Both restaurants are being run by the Volapié restaurant chain, the chef’s new business partner.

García secured his first Michelin as head chef at Tragabuches in Ronda and, after he moved back to Marbella, Calima was awarded its first Michelin star in 2007 – three years later adding a second one.

A Pioneer of the Spanish Revolution

The Ordoñez story is interesting and atypical by Spanish standards. Jorge Ordoñez, son of a wine-business family, left Málaga in 1987 to seek his fortune in the States. At that time the quality of the Spanish wines that American drinkers were being offered was pretty awful, consisting mainly of run-of-the-mill sherries and monotonous Riojas.

There was a lot of work to be done so Jorge rolled up his sleeves and got cracking. While it would be impossible to attribute the ensuing improvement of what was on offer from Spain to one man, Jorge unquestionably played his part in the “Spanish revolution” that consisted primarily of overhauling the image of those unrepresentative imports which gave the impression Spain had no great wines and lagged way behind what Italy could offer.

Jorge’s decision to import lesser-known qualities such as Albariño, Txacoli and Godello was a risky one, but finally bore fruit, and he garnered a respectable collection of awards in both the US and Spain for his pioneering work.

Leaving his business in capable hands, Jorge returned to Spain with the aim of fulfilling his lifelong ambition – to make wine – and rapidly built up a stable of first-class bodegas that could be promoted under the Ordoñez brand.

He hired Austrian winemaker Alois Kracher to set about producing a new range of wines from old Málaga vineyards and, as a result, Botani white, Botani Garnacha and the typical sweet Muscatel varieties are already well-established, with exports to many countries.

Other group bodegas such as Avancia (Valdeorras), Breca (Calatayud) and La Caña (Rías Baixas) combine with wineries in La Mancha, Jumilla, Alicante, Rueda and

Tierra de Castilla to make up the offer, together with bodegas in Rueda, Toro and Ribera del Duero.

The day-to-day running of the business is in the hands of the charismatic Victoria Ordoñez and, apart from Krachner, Alistair Gardner and Chris Ringland make up the oenological team.

As a personal choice, the classiest white wine made in all Spain comes from the Valdeorras region, bordering Rías Baixas with its famous white Albariño wines.

The Godello white grape used for Ordoñez’s Avancia label is not commonly found in supermarkets, but it is worth searching out. The three white Godellos are sensational, and like no other white wine you have ever tasted (from €12), and the Mencia red comes from old vines and is unfiltered (€25).

Miguela, how are you feeling after the all the treatment you have had so far?

I feel great. At first I was a little sore but that soon passed.

How do you feel about the changes Dr Kaye has made to your face?

Strawberries May Pack Important Nutritional Punch

A new Spanish study by researchers in Granada has found that strawberries can significantly help lower cholesterol levels. The researchers conducted an interesting study.

They had a team of healthy adults eat half a kilo of strawberries a day for a month to see if it altered their blood parameters in any way. At the end of the study, they found that levels of bad cholesterol and triglycerides were reduced significantly.

Researchers at the University of Salamanca teamed up with researchers from the Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM, Italy) and set up an experiment in which they added 500 grams of strawberries to the daily diets of 23 healthy volunteers over a month. They took blood samples at the start of the study and then again at four weeks. They found that the total amount of cholesterol dropped on average by about nine per cent and the levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), the so-called bad cholesterol, dropped by approximately 14 per cent. The researchers also found that triglyceride levels dropped by about 21 per cent. The high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the so-called good cholesterol, remained unchanged. All parameters returned to their initial values 15 days after the strawberries were discontinued.

“This is the first time a study has been published that supports the protective role of the bioactive compounds in strawberries in tackling recognised markers and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases,” said study investigator Maurizio Battino. A researcher at UNIVPM, he admits that there is still no direct evidence about which compounds of this fruit are behind their beneficial effects, but all the signs and epidemiological studies point towards anthocyanins, which give strawberries their red colour, according to Battino.

The Truth about Spring Allergies

Every year we hear about how it may be the worse allergy season in years. However, how true is it and are allergies a bigger problem here in Marbella than ever before? It turns out that several factors determine the severity of allergy season, such as weather patterns. While allergies are on the rise, affecting more and more Americans every year, for example, each spring isn’t necessarily worse than the last, according to allergist Dr. Michael Foggs, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).

In many countries, hay fever is on the rise. According to the ACAAI, 23.6 million Americans were diagnosed with hay fever in the last year. The prevalence of allergies is surging upward, with as many as 30 per cent of adults and up to 40 per cent of children having at least one allergy.

“With more people being affected by seasonal allergies, it may seem like every year is the worst yet for sufferers,” says Dr. Foggs, “but in reality there might just be more people complaining about symptoms.”

There are several theories about why more people are being diagnosed with allergies. Recent studies have shown pollen levels gradually increase every year. Part of the reason for this is due to the changing climate. The warmer temperatures and mild winters cause plants to begin producing and releasing pollen earlier, making the spring allergy season longer.

Experts also say that rain can promote plant and pollen growth, while wind accompanying rainfall can stir pollen and mould into the air, heightening symptoms. The climate is not only responsible for making the allergy season longer and symptoms more bothersome, but it may also be partially to blame for the rise in allergy sufferers.

Kurt Cobain… Photo ©Charles Peterson Málaga’s La Térmica exhibition hall is commemorating the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death (5 April 1994) with an exhibition featuring his band Nirvana and the grunge movement they led from Seattle. Everett True, the journalist credited with inventing the term “grunge”, described it as the most exciting music scene in a single city since the days of punk in London.

Kurt Cobain (singer and guitarist) and Krist Novoselic (bassist and guitarist) launched Nirvana in 1987 and released their first album, “Bleach”, in 1989.

After various drummer changes, the group became a stable trio in 1990 when Dave Grohl joined. Nirvana reached the pinnacle of rock music history with the release of “Nevermind” in 1991.

The exhibition at the Diputación Provincial’s La Térmica exhibition hall in Málaga (Avenida de Los Guindos) continues until 27 July.

Star-Studded Summer Soirée

It really doesn’t seem like a whole year since I wrote about the return of the Starlite Festival to Marbella with its exciting mix of music, gastronomy, fashion, art and cinema. But alas, time does fly and we’re approaching the festival’s third year at the Auditorio de Marbella at La Cantera.

The word festival is described as a period of festive activities, cultural events or entertainment, and Starlite certainly ticks all these boxes. I really like how the concerts are spread over a month, this year between 23 July and 23 August.

Most festivals are tightly packed into two or three days and I remember wishing I could be in two places at the same time when two of my favourite bands were playing at the same event. I think I ended up flipping a coin to decide which stage I would trudge off to.

At Starlite, you have the luxury of seeing your favourite bands and artists in a great concert format with no rain or mud and you can sit down too (I must be getting old...). In addition to the entertainment of the concerts and the monthlong period, you also have the cultural events.

Every year Starlite dedicates one night to philanthropy with the Starlite Gala, hosted by Antonio Banderas. It has become the largest charity event in Spain and will take place on 9 August.

As usual some of Spain’s biggest and best artists will be playing including Chucho Valdes (24 July), Alejandro Fernandez (1 August), Miguel Poveda (2 August), Segio Dalma (7 August), Dani Martin (14 August) Rosario (16 August) and Siempre Asi (20 August).

Returning once more is the masterful Julio Iglesias (13 August) and I’m sure his

concert will sell out quickly as he is one of the star attractions of the festival and, from what I’ve seen the last couple of years, he really enjoys it too.

So to the big guns… Marta Sanchez and Gloria Gaynor on 6 August is one I’m really looking forward to. The queen of Spanish pop alongside the queen of disco is a combination I simply have to see.

The great Albert Hammond is performing on 26 July and I’ve no doubt he’ll be closing with the fantastic “The Free Electric Band”.

The inimitable Tom Jones will be having underwear slung at him on 17 August and no doubt crooning some of his amazing back catalogue of hits including “It’s Not Unusual”, “Kiss”, “Delilah”, “What’s New Pussycat”, “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again” and “If I Only Knew”. Hope he sings “A Boy From Nowhere” too – that’s my fave.

The Pet Shop Boys are currently on a world tour and have luckily included Starlite as one of their dates on 30 July. With big electro pop tunes, new and old, this night will certainly have the quarry rocking.

There’s definitely going to be a “Celebration” with the next band. You’ll “Cherish” their concert with the “Summer Madness” they bring. Okay, that’s enough of that. Kool & The Gang will be taking the stage on 19 August! My favourite R&B band of all time will be blasting out their hits and I’ll be the one making a fool of myself trying to out-sing them.

Last, but by no means least (in fact they’re the opening act), a band that has sold over 100 million records worldwide and has been performing for 50 years… 23 July sees the Beach Boys take to the stage! What an opening act, one that I think takes this year’s Starlite Festival to a whole new level.

Easing of Eurozone Deflation Concerns

To all those who believe the Easter bunny normally brings only chocolate eggs… this year they added inflation for the eurozone.

Yes, according to European Central Bank president Mario Draghi, Easter being later this year added to eurozone deflation worries. He does believe, however, that with increased costs and spending around the zone we shall start to see less of a concern for deflation and remove a headache or two from the Central Bank.

Spain has started to contribute, as the Spanish statistics office says prices were 0.1 per cent lower in March than the year before, and certainly less than the previous estimate of 0.2 per cent. Maybe he is right, as increased tourism here during April could just add to the improvement.

Greece has again been in and out of the news and has seen unemployment edge down. The bad news is it stands at 26.7 per cent but youth employment, while showing a massive 56.8 per cent, is down from 60.4 per cent a year ago.

Banks in Greece are looking at raising funds and the country has already received €218 billion of rescue funds, so to see it return to the bond markets during April was a bold step. However, investors like what they are seeing and the country was able to make a successful return as it raised over €3 billion in its first bond sale for over four years. Even better news was the yield: it came in under five per cent.

In France new prime minister Manuel Vallis set out his plans on taxes as the government desperately tried to boost the economy, and was disappointed to see industrial production fall for the second month as business confidence declined. Output dropped 0.2 per cent against a forecasted 0.35 per cent, the fall being led by gas and electricity production. It did not stop the French Central Bank from holding its forecast for growth at 0.2 per cent but it does seem a steep hill to climb.

UK Forecast Revised… Positively

The European Central Bank again held interest rates but there was some talk about a future quantitative easing programme – although the detail remains behind closed doors.

Credit reference agencies were busy again with Standard and Poor downgrading Finland to a negative outlook and Moody’s hitting Turkey to negative. Portugal managed to see an upgrading.

The International Monetary Fund had quite a bit to say at its meeting, and had

to admit it got the forecast for the UK wrong, so it was good stuff for the UK as the IMF now expects the UK to be the fastest growing economy this year. Will this mean the economic plan is working?

Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne seems to have his feet on the ground and suggests the UK still has a long road to travel. He is right, as production output remains below the pre-crisis peak and has only just risen above the 2010 level.

The Bank of England kept rates on hold and will probably do so for the remainder of this year to keep the momentum going; and, of course, inflation is not a pressure point at present.

The Cooperative Bank seems to lurch from one crisis to another: it announced losses of £1.3 billion and will hold back bonus payments of around £5 million due to former bosses. The bigger question is: how will its future stack up as it attempts to raise another £400 million? The group itself is having further difficulties facing up to today’s demanding trading position and was not helped by Lord Myners’ resignation and his views on the lack of cooperation towards change.

Staying with banks, it seems customer complaints fell by 15 per cent for the last six months of 2013 but they shouldn’t get too complacent. Would you be happy running a business where there are still around 2.5 million complaints!

And internationally…

So finally to the States, where consumer confidence is at a nine-month high and the number of people out of work continues to fall. The Federal Reserve was sure the cutback on its monthly bond buying programme would not hurt the economy, and so far all appears fine.

To close… the IMF is telling us what we need to be careful about for the future, and says unwinding large bank balance sheets could risk exchange rate volatility; China still needs to reign in its shadow banking system; and emerging markets will need to tighten monetary policy to rein in inflation.
