EDITOR’S NOTE >
The Autumn months are the best on the coast, where summer — and its carefree mindset — seemingly never ends. It’s in that spirit that we continue our outdoor living theme from the last issue, featuring stylish products and fresh ideas for enjoying the cooler evenings of Southern Spain’s best asset. As the distinction between interiors and exteriors is being blurred, thanks to almost invisible glass architecture, we showcase the best in outdoor furniture, fires, kitchens, BBQs and shading options.

European Expansion Plans
for Local Property Auction House
Stop intruders BEFORE they enter your home
After a successful year, local property auction house, Direct Auctions are widening their reach to provide an property auction service in Portugal and France, with further plans of expansion into other major European countries in the near future. The growth and expansion of the company over the past years into what is now recognised as one of the first and most successful property auctioneers in Spain, can be attributed to good staff, an energetic marketing strategy including radio and TV coverage and client-focused services. "As a company we will continue to raise the bar in terms of excellent service and professionalism, and our portfolio now includes high-end value properties as well as properties in the middle and lower brackets," stated Managing Director and Auctioneer of Direct Auctions (Marbella West), Warrick Wincup. Their healthy portfolio proves this. Direct Auctions, since September 2009, have sold and completed on over 22 million euros worth of property, and at their most recent auction in July 2010, from 31 properties in their catalogue, 26 were sold and completed. Direct Auctions are currently planning for a London auction to take place in Spring 2011 and are working on a New Franchise Model for the company, which includes full training.
It’s wise to have an alarm inside your house but it’s even wiser to have an alarm fitted outside your house. Giving you time to react before the intruder can. PSI (Protect Security Installations) can protect the perimeter of your property with electronic or infra-red beams backed up with CCTV surveillance. The beams are discreet and can be blended into the exterior of your property from the bottom of your driveway to the top of a perimeter wall. Beams can be positioned so that they are active 24-hours a day without interfering with your own access to the garden or protected area. If and when the perimeter alarm is activated, PSI can install automatic exterior lights, CCTV (in order to follow or monitor any movement) and high decibel sirens to scare and confuse any intruders. Text ure Fant asy COOL METALLICS FEATURE IN THE TOP TEXTILE AND DESIGN TRENDS FOR &
Throw a little (or a lot) of metallic in with any colour, texture, or style, and you have hit upon the biggest trend of 2010/2011 in home decorating. Once considered to be a “luxury” material, metallics have now been transformed to be made available in a myriad of finishes. We will see them in wall and furniture finishes, leathers and vinyls, fabrics, lighting, etc. Metallics are adding a nice bridge to the dull abundance of neutrals by adding a bit of sparkle and luxe.
FUTU-RUSTIC – PARED-BACK MODERN LUXE With the economic crisis came a desire among consumers to be less extravagant, and to seek out durable, high quality products. Products inspired by nature and made of natural

fibres fit the bill, but with a newfound lightweight and fragile texture. Materials are soft and cocooning, remaining rustic but taking on new suppleness as innovative technologies develop in that direction. Part and parcel of this trend is a long-term shift towards materials that are deluxe and high quality, while at the same time staying true to eco-friendly principles. Shapes, like materials, are also motivated by nature, taking on organic, seemingly haphazard and flowing forms. Like furnishing fabrics, wallpapers, too, are taking their cue from nature. Textile companies are adopting giant leaf motifs or giving fabrics the texture of wood, or even of animal skins such as snakeskin and elephant hide.

Unsurprisingly, colours are earthy and organic, combined with just a hint of glamour. Caramel browns, beiges and terracotta shades take precedence, and these hues become more subtle and sophisticated by using some copper elements or gold nugget elements. Copper is a strong tendency this year and next. Matte and shiny are also blended together – for example, linens and hemp fabrics are overlaid with glimmering velvet or metallic embroidery, for a look that is luxurious without being extravagant.

TEMPTATION – AN INTIMATE ESCAPE The textile industry is increasingly using computer technologies to rework classic patterns. Damasks are going digital, jacquards stretched and altered. The contemporary and the classic are intermingling. Viewing the home as a sanctuary, consumers are looking for a more intimate experience when it comes to home textiles. Textures and colours this year reflect this sense of intimacy, as well as a certain sensuality. Materials are opulent and high end, ranging from thick velvets to weaves and Shantung silks. Tactile, three-dimensional textiles are also seeing a surge, such as beaded wallcoverings, tribal throws tipped with silver trim and wallpapers bejewelled with Swarovski crystals or covered in thick glitter. Layered textiles are also popular and fabrics trimmed with ribbon and tassels also offer an intimate, boudoir feel. Here, the colour palette is a blend of theatrical and sensual shades that are rich and dark and opulent. Deep berry tones mix with olive, coffee, peacock blue and leafy green. Thrown in the mix are, once again, copper hues – but this time with old-world, traditional textures and vintage finishes. Other metallic hues, such as rose gold and rosy silver, also feature in this theme.

HYPERNATURE As we realise the importance of living in harmony with nature, fabrics and wallcoverings are also becoming increasingly natural. Textiles made of linen, bamboo and soy are appearing on the scene – but often with a digitalised, technology-enhanced aspect to them. In terms of base materials, organic fabrics are gaining ground, as are honeycomb and waffle weaves. Transparency is also a strong trend which combines sheer fabric with ribbons of shimmering bronze. Hypernature sees shapes and patterns inspired by nature, with curving lines, forms and designs that cocoon and embrace. Colours also imitate it – the washed-out blue of paints found in a watercolour palette, ice-cream shades like turquoise, mint and bubblegum. Alhambra’s Sensations

INTUITION – PLAYFUL PRIMARY COLOURS It’s unsurprising that consumers are searching for ways to cheer themselves up after the doom and gloom of the last year or two. << Holden Decor’s Strike a Pose from the Kalika collection discover happiness than in your own home. Bright, monochrome primary colours are taking to the stage – it’s as if the Memphis Group (a Milan-based collective of young furniture and product designers who dominated the early 1980s design scene with its post-modernist style) is experiencing a comeback. We’re not in the 80s anymore, so primary colours are combined with black and white or natural colours. Red, yellow and blue tones are blended with leaf green, black and purple for strong, striking effects. Contrasting colours, too, are coming to the fore. Think acid greens teamed with strawberry reds, a colour combination that Backhausen has adopted in the damasks and stripes of its Dolce Vita range. Stripes, prints with an ethnic twist and other patterns are certainly gaining popularity. As are graphic geometric prints, which project sheer colour or draw the eye in with their optical illusions. Some outdoor rooms are similar to indoor kitchens, with expansive counter space and full food preparation areas complete with sinks and plumbing. It’s even possible to add a dishwasher and a refrigerator to make trips inside to clean up or grab cold drink a distant memory. Other outdoor rooms take the concept further with the addition of pizza ovens, cocktail bars, serene water features, trellises, entertainment centers, patio heaters for warmth, spas and pools. Landscaping, lighting and sculptures are additional elements that can help create a cohesive feeling within an outdoor space. This trend, bringing the inside out, extends the outdoor living season for the family as well as a home’s total living space and offers a spacious outdoor retreat for relaxing and entertaining and the outdoor room allows homeowners to extend their living space without having to build an addition.

Consumers are now offered sets and separates of dining, deep seating and occasional pieces, built and finished like high-quality indoor furniture but designed and engineered for full-time outdoor exposure with routine maintenance. These days, outdoor furniture can be realistically simple or elegantly stylish. Today’s patio furniture is both durable and attractive, in finishes ranging from cast aluminum to all-weather, synthetic wicker. Comfortable seating options available now are a lifetime away from traditional selections. Cushions are plush and deep with colours, patterns and textures of fabrics that follow indoor trends but are waterproof, fade-resistant and mildew-proof. Accessories such as rugs, pillows, throws, artwork and even curtains are now made specifically for outdoors, making these outdoor living spaces as comfortable and chic as their indoor counterparts. A new trend for designers is to define the outer perimeter or “walls” of an outdoor room. This can be done with a physical structure such as an overhead pavilion, enclosed porch, gazebo, or done only visually with pergolas, columns, landscape hedges, decorative containers

OUTDOOR PARTY LIGHTS Add extra pizzazz to existing outdoor lighting for special events … such as a patio party. Brighten up any soiree with these stylish options. Their mobility makes them practical all year long.
LIGHTING Outdoor lighting will accentuate any outdoor living area and transform a garden to an extension of a home, allowing an outdoor space to suddenly come alive and be used during all hours of the day and night. Fixtures normally found inside the home are now commonly found outdoors. This includes everything from coordinating table lamps to chandeliers to accent pieces like lit birdbaths, planters and even seating, all durable enough to withstand the elements. These days, technology allows outdoor lighting to be more energy efficient. A new line of affordable LED accent lights for the outdoors provides 40,000 hours of pure, white light for an average of 18 years of consumption. Since they’re consuming less energy, LEDs will actually save money over time. Landscape lighting will allow homeowners to benefit from the safety and security aspects of landscape lighting, and enjoy the beauty of their landscaping investment throughout the entire year. A solar lighting trend to recently emerge is solar stepping stones — a fun way to add some lighting underfoot. Made of a cement composite designed to look like real stone, they charge during the day and glow for hours once it gets dark. Also popular are the flickering LED solar-powered garden lanterns. This outdoor lamp is powered in the day by the sun’s rays and emits light for several hours in the evening, thus requiring no source of electricity. There are numerous solar-powered deck and garden lanterns out there; the fun thing about them is they emulate a candle’s flickering effect.
• Tiki torches. You may be familiar with the bamboo variety, but they’ve come a long way since their island days. Fuel them with citronella oil, propane or natural gas. Try trendy materials such as copper, aluminum or brass. Choose from wall sconce, hanging, tabletop and umbrella-clamp styles. • Paper lanterns. Fasten them on fence posts, from an overhang or set up as table toppers. If your lanterns don’t include a light source, use battery-operated light packs or electrical cords with hanging sockets. Available in nearly every colour, shape or pattern imaginable.

• String lights. They’re not just for Christmas trees anymore. Look for spunky red pepper lights to set your backyard chili cook-off aglow or white organza stars for an engagement party. So inspiring, you may even plan a party theme around your favorite bulbs!
WATER FEATURES Adding peace and serenity to outdoor living, water features are a hot item these days, reminding homeowners of various resorts or vacation destinations where they have seen and enjoyed similar structures. Hot tubs, of course, are a huge sell, bringing many outdoors no matter what the season. Those who are energy conscious don’t need to put off that purchase these days, because of new energy star ratings. Spas are merging into environment-friendly territory with insulated covers for maximum heat retention, lowvoltage switchless motors, and eco-conscious chemical conservation. Also, many hot tubs have a therapeutic purpose. There has also been a spike in swim spa sales. These spas offer a wide, deep current that is trapped at the end of the spa so it only flows in one direction — giving users smoother water and a better swimming experience. If you don’t want the hassle, or don’t have the space for a pool, this is the next best thing. Many homeowners are turning to the soothing sounds of the water with koi ponds, enjoying the beauty of fish and aquatic plants. Koi ponds feature

OUTDOOR KITCHENS One of the biggest trends in outdoor living has been the addition of a working outdoor kitchen. With a grill as a centerpiece, additions like cupboards and drawers, refrigerators, even televisions and sound systems have found there way outside. While some question the expense of purchasing some of these large ticket items, others believe it helps to take more advantage of “free” space outdoors instead of traveling to expensive resorts. Consumers are now offered state-of-the art grills and accessories for every budget, every occasion and every personality and style. Manufacturers are honing in on the individuality and needs of grillers by adding distinctive features, such as attachable sushi bars, portable and customised woks, cast iron griddles and advanced control tools, like a grill-surface temperature indicating when to flip and serve. From Italian stone wood ovens to multi-use stainless, grills, rotisseries and high output ceramic heating pods, these have really been a growing trend. From food warmers and insulated grill covers to grill grates and basting tongs, accessories are a griller’s best friend. Even clean-up accessories have new

advancements like the steam clean grill brushes. Aside from the grill with stovetop-style burners, griddles, and roasting spits, other accessories now available could include an under-counter fridge, a sink, a dishwasher, storage space for dishes and cooking gear, low counters for prep work, bar-height counters for guests, and a wine refrigerator. (When choosing appliances, be sure they can withstand the weather conditions in the area.)
FIRE Outdoor fireplaces are also becoming very popular. Prices and styles vary from basic to the most extravagant. The pot-bellied free-standing outdoor chiminea is the least expensive with the most durable being the cast iron or aluminum ones. The fire pit is the newest of the outdoor heating appliances, and are available as for permanent units or portable ones. The fire pit radiates heat in a 360-degree circle, as opposed to the chiminea which projects heat from only one side. The fire pit, due to its circular heat, comes closest in style to the traditional campfire. The outdoor living area has definitely become the vacation destination within the last two years. With the state of the economy and high fuel prices, it looks to continue. Many people with very busy lives can't always get away and by doing permanent outdoor improvements, the homeowner tacks on added value to their property and adds a lot of quality time for the family. After it all, the outdoor living area becomes the perfect spa and pamper place. H&L

Hot & Sizzling OUTDOOR KITCHENS ARE
ONE OF THE HOTTEST HOME IMPROVEMENT TRENDS. THE PLANNING STAGE IS CRITICAL IN CREATING THE
MOST EFFECTIVE, ENJOYABLE OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE.
Outdoor kitchens are the newest trend in alfresco living. A patio or poolside food prep area — complete with grill, pizza oven, refrigerator, sink and bar — empowers family and friends to spend more time under the sun and stars. Geared-up grilling islands offer all the features of a fullfledged kitchen and new home builders are actually adding them to their plans.
BUDGET Have a certain sum in mind by deciding what's most important. Do you want the bulk of your money to go into the setting — patio, pavilion, deck — or into equipment? If you're planning to stay in your house for a long time, put your money into the setting and start with modest equipment that can be upgraded over time. If you think you may move, buy the equipment of your dreams in portable form so you can take it with you. Build it in or buy versions on wheels. These days you can even get a portable pizza oven.
RECOGNISING A GOOD LOCATION The outdoor kitchen design should compliment the architecture of the home and the landscape. Use compatible materials and incorporate subtle architectural details. Consider choosing a spot that's neglected and needs the most work — areas that need a lot of attention frequently turn out to be the best location. Of course, it should also be on level ground, not too far from existing utilities, big enough for entertaining, offer privacy and a good exposure. Rather than the center of the garden, go off to one side or pick an area that's tucked away, because
< OUTDOOR LIVING
if the kitchen becomes the focal point, you won't have something to look at when you're there. Building onto an existing deck or terrace is an easy way to tie your kitchen into the rest of your home. Just be sure to keep the grill far enough away from the home to avoid smoke or heat damage. Consider the relationship between the indoor kitchen and outdoor kitchen. How self-sufficient do you want the outdoor kitchen to be? How could they be used together when cooking or entertaining? What is the traffic pattern between them?
ORGANISE THE SPACE Outdoor kitchens are all about entertaining, so bear that in mind when designing the space. Also be sure the spot you choose will accommodate everything you want the kitchen to hold. Apply good kitchen design principles for functional zones of the kitchen. If you are not a kitchen design professional, be sure you partner with one or at least understand good kitchen design principles. Cold areas (refrigeration), hot areas (grills and cooktops), wet areas (sinks) and dry areas (prep counters and storage) must all work together effectively in proper proximity, with each allocated enough space. Because the grill is the heart of any cookout, build your outdoor kitchen around it. Then arrange the items in the kitchen so they're easy to reach when you're cooking. Don't forget hooks for hanging tongs, spatulas, forks and other grilling utensils. If you include a sink, refrigerator and storage cabinet, they should all be close to each other. But they don't have to be arranged in the indoor-kitchen work triangle that ties the stove, refrigerator and sink together. One functional layout to consider is to place a counter opposite the grill, creating a mini-galley or U-shaped kitchen. This setup is not only efficient, but it also
keeps kids and other traffic out of the work area. Barriers that keep children away from the grill are a plus. Plan the entire outdoor entertaining space as part of a single functional plan. Dining areas, lounging areas, cooking areas and pool areas often coexist. Think of these as outdoor rooms and consider the flow of traffic between them as part of the design. Try not to isolate the outdoor cook from the rest of the party. Create opportunities for interaction and conversation within the outdoor kitchen and between the outdoor kitchen and other areas. Even if budget doesn't allow for these features now, proper planning can make them easier to add later.
MATERIALS Select low-maintenance materials designed to withstand the rigours of an outdoor kitchen. High-quality stainless steel provides a sanitary surface, easily cleaned and corrosion-resistant in harsh environments. Natural stone counters work well, but some require sealing on a regular basis. The densest granites, such as “absolute black are among the least porous stones but may not be ideal for your design aesthetic. Solid surface or acrylic-based materials are both durable and easy to wipe down. Consider how hot counter materials may get under constant sunlight. Some materials stay naturally cooler than others, and it isn't always a light-versus-dark colour issue. The best way to test is to leave a sample in the sun.
The 4 SeaZen by SB Interieur is a sleek and moveable outdoor kitchen. The innovative design enables you to turn the kitchen into a unique barkitchen with party table or dining table. It also provides you with all 3 options of using either a Wok, spit-roaster or a barbecue grill. Available in Teak, Stainless Steel or Corian. www.sbinterieur.be
HO O UT MD E OI N OSRP LI RI V AITNI G ON > > Counters and patio/decking material (especially near the grill and other cooking equipment) should be highly resistant to grease stains. Don’t be afraid to mix patio materials.
ELEMENTS TO CONSIDER Although it's tempting to compare outdoor kitchens to the one indoors, there are some key differences. For example, while a grill and counter space for preparing food are essential, a refrigerator and sink aren't. But including them can boost the value of your home by helping your outdoor kitchen qualify as a second kitchen. GRILLS. Grills are common element in an outdoor kitchen, and are an important part of any design. Stainless-steel-clad professional-grade grills stand up to weather and can stand alone or be built into an island. Powered by liquid propane, some models offer a grill range that measures from 80 to 150 cm — that’s a lot of red-hot real estate. Outdoor grills also pack fun features you may not have in your own kitchen, such as multiple burners for side-dish preparation and rotisserie units for slow-cooking meats. PIZZA OVENS. Wood fired pizza ovens are one of the hottest new (old!) trends in outdoor kitchens. Not only can wood-fired ovens be used for pizza, but they can cook anything from magnificent artisan breads to roast chicken, crispy crackling and pork chops, seared scallops, and even an overnight melt-in-the-mouth stew. Manufactured ovens are available from manufacturers like Forno Bravo and Fogazzo. The ovens can also be built in the traditional manner, out of bricks; this is a project suitable for a mason or even an ambitious do-it-yourselfer. SMOKERS. Get serious about authentic barbecue with a built-in smoker. Elegant smoked salmon and homey beef brisket turn out equally well in this low-temperature device.
t s e v n I Why
SINKS. Consider adding a sink to the outdoor kitchen. It involves bringing plumbing to the area, but it helps with prep and cleanup, and allows all of the action to happen outside. A sand-toned sink blends in better with the outdoors than stark white. But again, the most important thing is to match your fixtures with your existing home décor. When it comes to the faucet, matte finishes like brushed nickel or oil-rubbed bronze can help hide the natural collection of dust and debris that gathers in the outdoors.
At its most basic level, an outdoor kitchen is a place to cook and eat outdoors. It can be located on a screened porch, on a patio or it can be set in a courtyard or out in the garden. If you have not yet considered an outdoor kitchen here are 6 reasons why should consider one right away.
REFRIGERATORS. An outdoor refrigerator allows you to keep beverages for the pool area. Plus, there’s room to cool marinating meat and veggies, keeping them in launch position until the grill is sizzling. Undercounter units are popular for outdoor kitchens. They're out of sight and protected by the counter.
• Cooking indoors in the summer can be a nightmare. Cooking outdoors can save you from the heat and at the same time keep your air conditioning bill down.
PREP SURFACE. Be sure to include enough prep surface in the outdoor kitchen design. What's the fun of an outdoor kitchen if all the work has to be done inside, in the regular kitchen?
• All the mess and garbage is kept outside. Just make sure to have a garbage bin nearby.
Don't forget to include other elements in the overall outdoor space plan. A raised herb garden is a natural compliment to an outdoor kitchen, for example.
• You can enjoy cooking with a grill. Cook barbecue, steaks or other grilled dishes without fear of smoke filling your house. • While having food outdoors you don't have to run indoors to get supplies. Install an outdoor refrigerator and sip chilled beverages! • An outdoor kitchen serves as a great place to entertain guests and hold dinners and luncheons. Install a small fireplace and see how it adds to the magic. • Once installed, an outdoor kitchen will last you a long time. Since the materials used are weather resistant it generally withstands the test of time. You might just have to change the grill occasionally. • An outdoor kitchen can add to the real estate value of your house as well. If you plan to move out in a few years, consider an outdoor kitchen as an investment, not as a cost.

PLAN FOR UTILITIES The location of the outdoor kitchen and the equipment within the kitchen can greatly affect the installation or placement of the necessary water and electrical supply.
EXTEND THE OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING SEASON WITH HEATERS, SHADE AND RAIN SHELTER Shade from pergolas and vergolas in both the cooking and dining areas can make a big difference to the homeowner’s enjoyment of the space. Appropriate rain shelter for the outdoor kitchen can help keep the cook dry and comfortable even if the guests migrate indoors. Do not, however put a combustible ceiling or awning above an outdoor grill. Natural gas patio heaters can be used effectively under eaves and pergolas. Radiant heat under the patio and counter tops have been used in outdoor kitchens where money is no object, and portable propane patio heaters are a good solution for more modest budgets. Fireplaces and hearths are perhaps the most attractive option for adding heat to an outdoor entertaining area.
INCORPORATE MUSIC AND OTHER ENTERTAINMENT There are many options for high-quality outdoor speaker systems. Incorporate music into your design. Video monitors and televisions can also be successfully incorporated into the outdoor entertaining areas if appropriately sheltered from the elements. In addition to shelter, not all equipment delivers a good picture in bright sunlight conditions. Consider this as part of the process.

OUTFIT YOUR OUTDOOR PANTRY Cooking alfresco is easy with some essential staples on hand: • Olive oil — for sautéing and salads • Balsamic vinegar — for fast salad dressings • Salt/pepper in shakers with tops so humidity or rain doesn’t cause clumping • Dehydrated fruits and nuts — great for snacks, salads, desserts • Just-add-water mixes — soups, pancakes and biscuits • Tortillas in a sealed container — for fast quesadillas or wraps • Powdered sugar — sprinkle on fruit, sweeten drinks, top pancakes
it is necessary to keep the kitchen working after dark. Ambient lighting and lighting for the dining area are also critical to the success of an outdoor living space design. Safety lighting on paths and steps is a must.
RUBBISH AND MAINTENANCE Be prepared to deal with the inevitability of nature — everything from pollen on counters to spider webs in burners and wildlife visits. In addition to sponging down pre-cooking and scrupulous clean-ups post-meal, you need to take care of the rubbish. Opt for a pull-out can as part of your cabinetry, a free-standing unit, or mount one inside a cabinet door. To help you make the decision for the best outdoor kitchen here are a few tips from the experts: consult a kitchen design expert; consider the relationship between the indoor and outdoor kitchen; select low-maintenance materials for

More men than women buy outdoor kitchens, but women like the concept (and the fact they won't be doing the cooking). Outdoor kitchens can be permanent structures or movable. Most are modular – you can add extras such as teppanyaki hotplates. They use Calor gas but can also run off mains gas. Position outdoor kitchens where you do most entertaining, with a good view of the garden and not too close to neighbours. If the site is far from the house, you'll need an outdoor kitchen with fridge, sink and storage. Kitchens are built to withstand winter weather but protective covers are available.

The Finishing Touch ADD DAZZLE TO YOUR POOL INTERIOR WITH PEBBLETEC For the last quarter century, builders and industry suppliers have been working to strengthen and beautify pool plaster by adding aggregates like rock, quartz and graded marble to the matrix that’s applied to cement pools. Plain plaster, once the only choice for homeowners, has been losing share to these products, which manufacturers say are sturdier and stand up to homeowner neglect better than plain plaster. One such product is PebbleTec. PebbleTec offers the all natural pebble rock pool finish, and is ideal for the interior of pools, spas and water features.
THE BASICS Technically, all pool plaster contains aggregates. Plain white plaster, for example, is made by adding crushed marble, commonly known as pool sand or marcite, to Portland cement. Although this aggregate has served pool builders and homeowners pretty well, it doesn’t necessarily stand up to harsh chemical environments like the newer ones do. But how do these alternative aggregates, like PebbleTec work? It’s pretty simple, really. In your newer, modern-day finishes, to achieve a particular look, the ‘cream’ on the top of the surface is removed after it’s been trowelled. This gives you the exposed aggregate. The exposed aggregate in effect hides the cement, which is by far the weakest part of the surface matrix.
WHY PEBBLETEC® The difference between PebbleTec and traditional glass mosaic tile is plain to see but several other systems exist which emulate the opposed aggregate look. The important point though is that none of these use quartz stone as the base material — PebbleTec does. Quartz stone is hard (geologically speaking it is 97% of the way towards being a diamond). This rock, once exposed, offers homeowners a couple of appealing benefits. “People buy PebbleTec for two reasons,” Udo from Atlas Pools explains. “One is the aesthetic value and the other is the longevity and durability. It's virtually bulletproof.”
THE PRODUCT Natural pebble is a pure product, which provides a natural and practical way to produce beautiful swimming pools with economic use of the earth’s natural resources. The mining and extraction methods are licensed and controlled by environmental agencies and the pebble is used in its natural state and only graded and rinsed. There are no manufacturing processes involved in its production and therefore no pollutant by-products or harmful emissions are produced. Originally developed in Australia over 25 years ago, the pebbles are chosen for their natural colour and smoothness. Finely screened and naturally tumbled, these pebbles are mixed with special formulated cement and additives, such as ceramic chip or coloured glass, to create a beautiful finish that is resilient, nonporous, and easily cleaned. The PebbleTec® finish produces a spectrum of iridescent colours as the sunlight changes throughout the day and the shades deepen with the pools depth to give the most natural look possible. It allows for contoured shoreline-like edges, blends waterfalls and boulders naturally with the pool's interior and can be used to create a sloping beach pool entrance rather than traditional steps. There are no corners, no joints and no sharp edges.
TIME FOR A TOUCH UP The surfaces on the market today are worth the investment and give the client an end result with a lasting impression. From glass tile to glass beads to custom-coloured quartz, these finishes provide pool owners with an option to
make a long-term investment that keeps their pool beautiful. The beauty, versatility and toughness these exposed aggregates deliver do come with a higher price tag than traditional plaster, but as Udo points out, the overall costs of ownership is similar if a homeowner finds him or herself needing to replaster just a few years down the road. On a remodel, when you want to spruce up your outdoor area and the pool is already there, PebbleTec is a nice option to totally transform your pool. Classic materials, with their eternal appeal, timeless beauty and durability, never go out of style. PebbleTec® finishes are available in three sizes of pebble which give three distinct finishes, PebbleTec®, PebbleSheen® and PebbleFina®. Available from Atlas Pools, the only licensed applicator of PebbleTec® finishes on the Costa del Sol.

Energy efficient, cost saving solutions for commercial & residential properties PRETASOL ENERGIA SL, A RENEWABLE ENERGY SPECIALIST BASED ON THE COSTA DEL SOL, WAS ASKED BY TWO OF ITS CUSTOMERS TO ASSESS AND FIND SUITABLE COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS THAT ENABLED THEM TO REDUCE THEIR MONTHLY OUTGOINGS. DETAILED BELOW ARE THE WAYS IN WHICH PRETASOL USED ITS EXPERTISE TO IMPLEMENT ENERGY AND COST-SAVING SOLUTIONS FOR ITS CLIENTS.
DY 1 LED LIGHTING CASE STU
Pretasol received an email from Mr. Stephen E. who was interested in a solar hot water installation for his villa in the hills behind Estepona.
Photos by Mimi VP
Heritage Resorts, which owns and operates five resorts on the Costa del Sol wanted to reduce the resorts’ energy costs so the Manager, Nicholas Pratt approached Pretasol.
DY 2 SOLAR WATER HEATING CASE STU
Pretasol studied the resorts energy usage and found that biggest savings could be achieved by changing the lighting in the restaurant area. The existing 50W halogen lights were changed for 3W dimmable LED lights achieving an energy saving of over 90%. This is what Nicholas had to say about the company: “I recently discovered Pretasol after looking into energy saving products, and in particular savings on lighting costs. I was amazed to find out the savings I could make which were clearly demonstrated after a quick survey of my premises. In one outlet alone I have been burning one hundred and seventy 50W halogen bulbs which are typically on for 14 hours per day. By changing all of these down to just a 3W bulb, the energy I am going to save in the long run will pay for the cost of the bulbs within 12 months. Also, the life span of the new bulbs is far longer than the previous type I was using meaning that we don’t need to change the bulbs so often. Plus there is a two year guarantee, so I really can’t go wrong! The service provided has been second-to-none with a great deal of after-sales service included which, in this neighbourhood, is definitely a welcome change. Thanks Pretasol! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Pretasol as they have delivered a professional service and a high quality product. If you’re interested in saving on energy costs both commercially and at home, then this is the company to talk to.” Nicholas Pratt, Resort Services Manager, Heritage Resorts.
SOLAR FACTS • Germany are pioneers in solar energy with more solar panels per square metre than anyone else in Europe. • From 2006 onwards, every newly built house must use 20% renewable energy. • EU — 20% of all energy must be renewable-sourced by 2020. • EU mandate – giving countries money to make homes and buildings use renewable energy. • LED lighting is another way to make your house more efficient. Even though they can seem more dull than normal lights, they last longer and save you money. • It pays to have efficient white goods and they can also be BE subsidised by the Government.
The company conducted a site survey the next day to ascertain the most suitable solution for Stephen. They realised that a 300-litre system with solar panels on the roof and a water tank inside the home would offer the most efficient and aesthetically-pleasing solution. Within a few days they had prepared all the materials and installed the system and Stephen had a system that was providing all of his hot water needs. Here is what Stephen had to say about Pretasol: “A quick note to thank Pretasol for completing the installation of the solar water heating for our house. It is hard to believe that less than four weeks after the site visit Pretasol have successfully secured the grant, completed the installation and we are now enjoying solar-powered hot water. Following the installation, our metre is already showing readings of a 45% reduction in our electricity bills and we are looking forward to a payback within two years. I would also like to thank you for your time in designing an attractive, cost-effective and high quality solution. Please also pass on our thanks to your installation team who have worked tidily and professionally to complete the installation to a high standard." Mr. Stephen E., Estepona.
If you would like to benefit from the expertise of Pretasol and their team, then please do not hesitate to contact them at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the office on 952 801 959. They will be more than happy to complete a free energy survey to see where you can save on your energy costs.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
Breast Cancer — the facts, the stats and the fiction
DR EMMA PENNERY, CLINICAL DIRECTOR
• Changes in size or shape. • Changes in skin texture such as puckering or dimpling. • Inverted nipple. • A lump or thickening of breast tissue. • Redness or a rash on the skin/around the nipple. • Discharge from one or both nipples. • Constant pain in breast or armpit. • Swelling in armpit/around collarbone.
AND ONE OF THE UK’S LEADING BREAST CANCER CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALISTS
THE FACTS • The biggest risk factor, after gender, is increasing age – 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50. • More people are being diagnosed with breast cancer but survival rates are improving — probably as a result of improved treatment and earlier detection. • Breast cancer also affects men, but it is rare — around 300 men are diagnosed each year.
THE STATS • Nearly 46,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK. That’s one person every 11 minutes. • Just over 12,000 people die from breast cancer in the UK every year. • Breast cancer is the second biggest cause of death from cancer for women in the UK, after lung cancer. • There are an estimated 550,000 people living in the UK today who have had a diagnosis of breast cancer. • In women under the age of 35, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer.
THE FICTION • Five years past diagnosis means I’ve got the ‘all clear’. As well as potentially experiencing long-term side effects of treatment, patients face the uncertainty that their cancer could return at any time – including a diagnosis of secondary breast cancer which can’t be cured, only controlled. • Stress causes breast cancer. Despite numerous studies, no definitive link between stress and breast cancer has been found. • Breast cancer is mainly a hereditary disease. Breast cancer can run in families, but fewer than 10% of cases are as a result of an inherited faulty gene.
HOW DO I CHECK MY BREASTS? There’s no right or wrong way to check your breasts. Try to get used to looking at and feeling your breasts regularly. Remember to check all parts of your breast, your armpits and up to your collarbone.

The Gastric Mind Band® WORLDWIDE LAUNCH OF GROUND BREAKING WEIGHT LOSS BOOK
First men’s collection for Atelier Swarovski designed by Stephen Webster Atelier Swarovski unveils its first ever men’s collection designed by Stephen Webster, champion of edgy, Rock n’ Roll jewellery and Creative Director of Garrard. Defined by Gothic glamour and aptly named ‘Once Bitten’, the collection features the Divine Rock Swarovski crystal with the dynamic fracture across its facet, gripped by fierce gun metal claw settings and set into pendants, rings, tie pins and bracelets. The Vampire theme is integral to the collection, with bones to secure cuff links in place, bat motifs and colours of Red Magma, Jet, Montana and Crystal Silver Shade. All net proceedings from sales of the Divine Charity bracelet will be donated by Atelier Swarovski to the Clinton Bush Haiti Foundation. “An intense, passionate but still masculine collection for men, 'Once Bitten' is an example of how men’s jewellery has evolved from the basic and obvious themes considered acceptable in order to appeal to men’s taste. Provocative and challenging, these are accessories to be noticed and commented on. It’s no longer just about the watch for men.” www.atelierswarovski.com • www.stephenwebster.com
The Gastric mind Band®, as seen on TV, is a revolutionary hypnotherapy technique which has been developed to transform peoples’ eating habits and encourage weight loss without going through invasive gastric band surgery or extreme crash dieting. Due to the overwhelming success of the ground breaking concept, September saw the worldwide book launch of Shirrans’ Solution The Gastric mind Band®, which has been written and produced by Marion and Martin Shirran on the Costa del Sol. The two leading therapists will appear on Good Morning America, ABC News and the biggest English language TV stations in the USA, as well as prime time shows in the UK on the BBC and across Ireland and London. Destined to be the New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller, this eagerly awaited book has generated an overwhelming amount of interest by the international media and public. Since The Gastric mind Band® concept first appeared in the world media in 2007, Marion and Martin have been inundated with enquiries for more information and, as a result, two years ago decided to write this book to make detailed information accessible to people in their own homes. The content of the book is based on the Gastric mind Band® therapy which was developed and tested by Marion and Martin in Spain over a two year period. Although the book alone cannot guarantee instant results without one-to-one treatment, it provides a wealth of self-help. The idea of using the subconscious, rather than invasive gastric band surgery, provides individuals with a safe, non-surgical and cost-effective approach to weight loss. Shirrans’ Solution The Gastric mind Band® provides readers with an insight into Gastric mind Band therapy as well as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and hypnotherapy to help transform the way in which they think about food. This book and its underlying revolutionary concept will teach the reader how to harness the power of the subconscious mind to create a better approach to food and how to have a level of motivation and control around food they’ve only ever dreamed of. The book also explains the conspiracy surrounding diet and permanent weight loss. Without a doubt, this is a “must read” book for anyone who has tried endless diets and weight loss programmes without seeing long-lasting results. Shirrans’ Solution: The Gastric mind Band® is now available to purchase online via www. gmband.com and www.amazon.co.uk and is priced at around £12.50. For more information please contact Marion & Martin Shirran on (0034) 951 311 591 or visit www.gmband.com

of research this product hit the shelves late January 2010. L'Oréal Youth Code, uses revolutionary technology to reverse skin's age by targeting the genes which causes skin to age and thin rather than the skin cells which other creams and lotions target. Researchers have discovered that we carry specific youth genes that create proteins to keep skin looking young and wrinkle-free. These proteins fail because of many factors including the environment, sun exposure, poor diet and stress. L'Oreal Youth Code contains Biolysate, which speeds up the recovery time of our youth genes, making sure they stay plumped up and our skin remains wrinkle-free. Best used as soon as wrinkles begin to appear on your face. £14.99

VASELINE SHEER INFUSION — Vaseline Sheer Infusion, which launched in January 2010, is unlike other body lotions that sit on your skin unabsorbed, this baby goes deeper as it gets drawn into all the layers of your skin. It works in the same way as a positive ion is attracted by a negative ion. Vaseline Sheer Infusion contains Glycerol Quat, which is the positive charge to react with the negative charge which is our skin. The Glycerol Quat releases moisturising ingredients that are drawn down into the layers of the skin. Here it merges with other ingredients to form Stratys-3, which makes the moisturizers work even harder. It works on all skin types and comes in 3 different scents: Vitamin burst, Botanical blend and Mineral renewal. £4.99
REVITOL CELLULITE SOLUTION — There’s been a lot of buzz in the media about caffeine’s ability to reduce the appearance of dimples caused by cellulite, as well as the positive effects Retinol creams can have on your cellulite dimples. It turns out that Revitol Cellulite Solution all natural ingredients contains both Caffeine and

Retinol A as active ingredients. Revitol contains caffeine from coffee extract as well as green tea extract, which works to improve blood circulation to the area most affected by cellulite. Increased blood flow helps to open the metabolic pathways in the area and boost healthier looking skin. Retinol A, Shea Butter and Horsetail Extract firm, tone and moisturise the skin. The end result is smoother looking skin and a reduced sign of cellulite dimples. Best used before cellulite starts to appear but helps after the cellulite has become visible. 30.37
BOOTS NO PROTECT & PERFECT BEAUTY SERUM — Boots No 7 Anti wrinkle cream caused a massive stir worldwide after a TV documentary in 2007 tested out claims made by a wide range of anti-aging products (including very expensive ones), and No7's Protect and Perfect Serum came out on top. Extensive studies have also shown that, unlike other similar products on the market, No 7 Intense Beauty Serum is really as good as they say in terms of eradicating wrinkles caused by Sun damage. No 7 Intense Beauty Serum contains peptides, retinyl palmitate and white lupin extract, according to the manufacturers. It works by stimulating the production of fibrillin-1, a protein that promotes skin elasticity. The cream works by tightening the skin around the eyes and the mouth and not only prevented wrinkles from forming but it also reduces wrinkles and crows feet by a visible margin. H&L £19

TRAVEL & LEISURE
on our doorstep BY ANDREW FORBES
THE COSTA DEL SOL IS ONE OF EUROPE’S MOST DESIRABLE LOCATIONS FOR A HOME, APPEALING TO RESIDENTIAL TOURISTS AND PERMANENT RESIDENTS ALIKE. NOT ONLY IS THERE A SUPERB CHOICE OF PROPERTIES, BUT THE LIFESTYLE IS SECOND TO NONE. One of the greatest advantages of life here is the superb climate and the amazing diversity of the natural environment — from beaches, to mountains, to forests to rover valleys. The coast is surrounded by some of Andalucía’s most stunning scenery. For most it’s just a great view, or maybe at the weekend a place to enjoy a walk. Yet, for a growing number of residents and visitors to Andalucía, the great outdoors is becoming one huge adventure park. “We’re so lucky living here in Andalucía; we have some of the finest natural parks and adventure locations right on our doorstep” confirms Babak Alimoradian, founder and director of Team Xtreme, the adventure activities company that is causing quite a stir on the coast. “More than ever, adventure activities are capturing the imagination and attention of people who want to disconnect from the stress of daily life and reconnect with nature. But they also want excitement, so ‘adrenalinrush’ activities are getting more and more popular”, explains Babak. Team Xtreme offers over 30 adventure activities from skydiving to trekking. Despite the high octane name of the business, most of the activities are actually suited to a wide age and fitness range. “Team Xtreme designs activities to suit the abilities and requirements of our clients. We cater for both private groups wanting to share a fun day out, as well as corporate clients that want to offer incentives and team building events. So we can for example, offer a guided trek or a 4x4 jeep tour through a natural park, giving truly privileged access to many interesting areas, but at the same time, it is not too physically demanding, but very pleasurable. Then of course, for those that want more excitement there are options like helicopter rides across the coast; race days on high speed private race tracks; and of course for a true adrenalin-rush there are activities like skydiving” – Babak is passionate when he speaks about the variety of Team Xtreme adventures on offer. Activities are available all year round, but can vary to suit the seasons. For example there is a superb range of winter sport adventures offered in the Sierra Nevada area, including ice climbing, snow-

“Adventure activities are ideally suited to corporate clients too” confirms Babak. “They make great incentives and also they offer the perfect environment in which to strengthen teams. People share common objectives, feel an outstanding team spirit and work together to overcome challenges; the feedback has been superb. We also work with professional motivational coaches that can combine our outdoor activities with training and other learning exercises for the perfect corporate package — we call it The Ultimate Performance Event.” Team Xtreme is an example of the new breed of adventure company; focusing on exceptional quality, safety, professional trainers and guides, and also a flexibility to meet every client’s needs. Babak continues, “We have a bespoke service for group tours and corporate events. Our team will design and tailor a solution to meet the client’s objectives, whether that is the best adventure holiday; or a highly targeted corporate team event over one or more days. Full details are available on the Team Xtreme website www.teamxtreme.es . Flat Out in the Fastest 911 Ever S R 2 GT Th
1 1 9 e h c s r e Po
THE TIME: SEVEN MINUTES, 18 SECONDS ON THE NÜRBURGRING-NORDSCHLEIFE. THE POWER: 620 HP. THE WEIGHT: 1,370 KILOGRAMS OR 3,021 LB IN ROAD TRIM WITH ALL FLUIDS ON BOARD. THE CAR: THE NEW PORSCHE 911 GT2 RS. THE GT2 RS RECENTLY MADE ITS WORLD DEBUT AT THE MOSCOW AUTO SHOW ON AUGUST 25TH.
The future top GT model marking the absolute climax in the 911 range is the fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart. With power up by 90 hp and weight down by 70 kilograms or 154 lb in comparison with the 911 GT2, the new 911 GT2 RS has a power-to-weight ratio of just 2.21 kilos or 4.9 lb per horsepower, by far the best power/weight ratio in its class. Obviously, these are the ideal ingredients for an ultra-high-performance sports car with supreme agility, truly blistering performance on the road, and of course exemplary Porsche Intelligent Performance. For despite this extra power and performance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions versus the 911 GT2 are down by approximately 5 per cent to 11.9 ltr/100 km (equal to 23.7 mpg imp) and 284 g/km. The 3.6 litre six-cylinder boxer engine boosted by two turbochargers with variable turbine geometry exclusive to Porsche in its combination with a gasoline engine drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Developed especially for the 911 GT2 RS, sports tyres measuring 325/30 ZR 19 convert this massive power into equally massive performance and acceleration on the road: 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in just 9.8 seconds, and 0 to 300 km/h in 28.9 seconds. Top speed is 330 km/h. Equally supreme stopping power on this ultra-high-performance sports car comes from PCCB composite ceramic brakes. Appropriate longitudinal and crosswise dynamics are ensured by the sporting RS set-up of the springs, PASM
Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management, anti-roll bars, as well as the dynamic engine mounts and PSM Porsche Stability Management. In its looks the new 911 GT2 RS stands out clearly from the 911 GT2 above all through the lavish use of carbon-fibre-reinforced (CFR) components in mattblack surface finish, even wider wheels and flared wheel arches at the front, new 911 GT2 light-alloy wheels with central locking, as well as ”GT2 RS“ model designations on the doors and rear lid. The upgraded front spoiler lip and the rear spoiler lip made of CFR and now 10 millimetres or almost 0.4 inches higher, again in surface carbon finish, ensure the right aerodynamic precision as well as extra down force. The interior also exudes the flair of sporting performance in virtually every detail, featuring lightweight bucket seats made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic in carbon surface finish and lightweight door panels with door opening straps. The basic interior colour is black, contrasting attractively with features such as the seat centre sections and the roof lining as well as segments on the steering wheel rim. The gearshift and hand brake lever are both finished in red alcantara. Limited to just 500 units, the 911 GT2 RS will be available in Europe from September 2010. The Euro base price is 199,500.- Euro. Including VAT and national specifications/equipment the new 911 GT2 RS will retail in Germany at a price of 237,578 Euro.

Practical gardeners, authors and speakers living in Spain for 25 years. With the temperatures dropping and the chance of Autumn rains to re-green parched areas of gardens it’s a delight to again have friends around for an alfresco lunch and work in the garden at normal hours. Our Summer routine of sunrise until 10.30 to get things done before it’s unbearably hot can now be dropped until next June. Thinking of alfresco eating this summer we have made much use of a solar cooker we constructed from an Alsol kit. It’s been especially useful for casserole dishes that can simmer slowly for two or three hours while one gets on with gardening and will continue to work throughout the Autumn and even on sunny Winter days beyond. For Autumn there are plenty of things to get on with between September to November, which are outlined below. (Fuller lists can be found in the calendar chapters of each of our books.)
THE FLOWER GARDEN Autumn gardens can be a delight. Some plants such as gazanias that shut up shop during the hottest weeks come back into flower and Autumn flowering plants come into all their glory. Also trees such as bird of paradise, orchid tree, cotton rose in full flower are not to be missed, and of course by the end of Autumn one will have enjoyed the Autumn colours of drying deciduous leaves. Plant tables in Your Garden in Spain – From planning to planting includes English, Spanish and Botanical names and indicate flowering times, etc. If you don’t have spring and summer bulb displays, now is the time to plant for next year. Our favourites for Spanish gardens are clivias, freesias, Dutch and Spanish irises and anemones for the Spring and lilies, tulbagia (normally purchased as a plant), cannas, mirabiles San Diego de noche and montbretias for the Summer. Your Apartment terraces and balconies may have been scorching during July and August even with blinds and awnings down but now is the time to plant up for Autumn and Winter colours. Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style is full of practical ideas.

< THE GARDEN 25% of compost and composted manures to poor soils. Many riding schools will let you collect free. For Apartment terraces , balconies and windowsills: Collect suitable containers that can range from plastic containers, window boxes and wooden or aluminium growing tables – see ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style’. The three square metre balcony below grew over twenty varieties of vegetables last autumn and winter and was then planted up all summer. • Mix a bag of worm compost into a soil/peat based compost and add a little TeraCottem soil improving/water retaining gel for a productive growing medium for containers.
FRUIT AND NUT GROWING ALSO NEEDS ATTENTION
A KEY TIME FOR VEGETABLE GROWING The autumn is a key time for vegetable growing whether you have been growing them for some years or are about to start. If you have been growing vegetables for some time the essential tasks are threefold.
Keeping summer plants growing by careful watering and feeding to extend their harvests as long as possible especially tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and beans.
Processing Autumn gluts by drying tomatoes and making chutneys or jams. If you have never made tomato jam have a go this year it is delicious.
Enriching the soil having cleared finished summer crops and then making sowings and plantings of vegetables for eating during the upcoming months. • Autumn — lettuces, swiss chard and carrots. • Christmas — new potatoes, brussels sprouts, red lettuces and rocket. • Winter — beetroot, carots, parsnips and cabbages. • Early Spring — onions, garlic, peas and broad beans. If you grew pumpkins during the summer they will probably be harvested in September just in time for Halloween. There are many uses for pumpkins at this time. Our uses for a Halloween dinner with friends • Pumpkin lanterns of various sizes and designs. • Pumpkin soup. • Pumpkin bread. • Roast pumpkin as one of the vegetables. • Vegetables served in a hollowed out pumpkin basket. • Pumpkin flans If you have never grown vegetables in Spain before invest in a copy of Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain if living in a villa or Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style which covers vegetable growing in containers for apartment owners. Autumn is the easiest time to start and the first tasks are as follows. For gardens: Decide whether to grow in a raised bed because of shallow soil or in a veggie bed or rows between fruit trees if having good soil. Improve the soil. It’s best to add
Harvests can include grapes, persimmons, apples, walnuts, late raspberries, early mandarins, satsumas, mangos, chirimoyas and pomegranates. As the heat goes out of the sun an electric dryer is useful as it can operate all night in a bathroom or utility room with an open window. It’s an Autumn delight to shower in the morning to the smell of drying mandarins or raspberries. Now is also a good time to plant up some extra deciduous fruit trees. We would delay the planting of new citrus and other evergreen trees until the spring especially in frosty areas. Scan through our book Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain before making your final choices. Over seventy fruits are covered. Some for the coastal plain and others for the inland mountain areas.

KEEPING ON TOP OF COMMON PROBLEMS With gardens now enjoyable to relax in don’t forget that cooler and damper weather brings snails and mildew spores out so start again to use an eco friendly snail bait such as Neudorff’s Ferramol and dust plants that show signs of mildew with yellow sulphur powder.
TIDYING THE GARDEN Last but by no means the least important tidy up the garden cutting back flowered growth to stimulate a Christmas flowering but remember that the big annual cutback is best done in Spain in January rather than October/November in the UK.

Pumpkin Delight Packed with vitamins and minerals, pumpkins add more than taste and colour to your cuisine. Pumpkins are a sure thing when it comes to Halloween décor, but the vibrant orange shells also house tasty fare on the inside. Fat free, 49 calories per cup, and loaded with vitamins and minerals — what’s not to love? Pumpkins are packed with beta carotene, an important antioxidant. Researchers say a diet rich in beta carotene foods may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer and protect against heart disease. But the benefits go beyond health. Pumpkins are versatile, and they blend well with many different herbs and spices for both sweet and savoury dishes.
COOK © PHOTOS.COM
Forgo cooking with the jumbo pumpkins you carve with the kids. Larger pumpkins are stringier and less tasty. Opt for the smaller pumpkins for a smoother texture and sweeter taste.
CHOP The skin comes off easily if you cook the pumpkin instead of chopping it up when it is fresh. You can pop a small, whole pumpkin into the microwave — just poke it with many holes and cook it on high for a total of 15 minutes, checking it every 5 minutes.
SPANISH PUMPKIN AND BEAN SOUP RECIPE
This chunky soup is made even more interesting with the addition of diced pears and a classic Catalan picada thickener of garlic, almonds and bread. In Morocco, lentils might be used instead of chickpeas or white beans, and sometimes rice or braised greens are added to the mix.
INGREDIENTS 1 cup dried chickpeas (garbanzo) 1 cup small dried white beans (Fabes, Judion, Fava, etc.) 2 quarts plus 3 cups water 1/2 cup olive oil 1 large yellow onion, chopped 1/4 cup diced ham 1 tbs. sweet paprika 2 tomatoes, peeled, seeded and diced Pinch of saffron, steeped in 1/4 cup hot chicken stock or water 12 almonds 1 slice bread, cut in half 2 garlic cloves 2 tbs. sherry vinegar 1 + 1/2 cups peeled and coarsely chopped pumpkin or butternut squash 3 pears, peeled, halved, cored and cut into chunks 1/2 lb. green beans, trimmed and cut into 5 cm lengths Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste >>
< HOME ENTERTAINING DIRECTIONS Pick over the chickpeas and white beans, and discard any misshapen beans and stones. Rinse the chickpeas and beans and drain. Place in a bowl, add water to cover generously and let soak overnight, then drain. In a saucepan over high heat, bring the water to a boil. Add the chickpeas and beans and return to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer until the chickpeas and beans are tender, about 1 hour. Meanwhile, in a sauté pan over medium heat, warm 2 tbs. of the olive oil. Add the onion and sauté, stirring occasionally, until tender and translucent, about 10 minutes. Stir in the ham and paprika, mixing well, and then mix in the tomatoes. Cook for 10 minutes to blend the flavors. Add the saffron and stock to the pan, mix well and set aside. In another sauté pan over medium heat, warm the remaining 6 tbs. olive oil. Add the almonds, bread and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden, about 5 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the almonds, bread and garlic to a mortar or a small food processor. Grind with a pestle or process to a paste. Add the vinegar, mixing well. Set aside. After the chickpeas and white beans have cooked for 1 hour, add the pumpkin and pears and simmer for 10 minutes. Finally, stir in the tomato-onion mixture, the green beans and the bread mixture, and simmer until the green beans and pumpkin are tender and the flavours are blended, 10 to 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Ladle into warmed bowls and serve immediately. Serves 6 to 8.

HALLOWEEN COCKTAIL VAMPIRE KISS MARTINI Photo & Recipe Courtesy of Finlandia Vodka
Signature drinks are a fun part of any special gettogether, but Halloween is the rare occasion where you also get to add an element of creepy to your creative concoctions! While Halloween is typically thought of as primarily orange and black holiday, there are a few other colours that also work well for spooky signature drinks, including dark purple, "hazardous material" neon green, and – of course – blood red. Here’s a recipes for a delicious blood-red cocktail that is sure to please your favourite (friends dressed up as) vampires … and other “unusual” guests! INGREDIENTS
• Pumpkins grow nearly all over the world. • Pumpkins range in colour from white to sage green, to deep green and dark orange. • Pumpkins are a member of the squash family. • Pumpkins are a fruit. • Pumpkins are 90 percent water. • The Spanish used pumpkin seeds for food. • Spain is one of the main producers in Europe of the gourd and pumpkin species.
1 1/2 oz Finlandia Vodka 1 1/2 oz Korbel Champagne 3/4 oz Chambord Red sugar for rimming PREPARATION Rim the glass with red sugar (use food colouring). Pour vodka and half of the Chambord in a martini glass. Top with Champagne. Pour the remaining Chambord over the back of a spoon to make it float.
IMMED G R D E P IP R D OOD
1 cup Sugar 1/2 cup Light corn syrup 1/2 cup Water Red Food Colouring
Combine sugar, syrup and water. Cook without stirring to hard crack stage – which is 300 degrees F. Add food colouring. Turn off heat. While the mixture is still hot, dunk the top of the cocktail glass into the mixture to create the red rim. If you need to do several glasses, keep the mixture hot so it lasts longer (instead of turning heat off, just reduce slightly). You can go anywhere from just along the very tip of the rim to part way down the glass – whichever you prefer. Flip the glass right side up to cool (make sure your hands are protected, hot candy mixture can burn if it drips). The thick consistency of the mixture will cause “drips” as it hardens on the glass! Rims about 8 glasses.

How to Choose a Cool Collar for your Dog PLAIN LEATHER OR NYLON USED TO BE THE ONLY CHOICES, BUT NOW THERE ARE LITERALLY SCORES OF DIFFERENT STYLES TO CHOOSE FROM. HERE'S HOW THE PICK THE PERFECT ONE FOR YOUR POOCH.
Using a tape measure, determine your dog's neck size, then add 5 to 8 cm. You don't want the collar to be loose enough to come off over her head and you definitely don't want it to be too tight, which can cause choking and skin irritation. Different manufacturers label their small, mediums and large differently, but the neck measurement should be on the product tag. If your dog is a puppy and still growing, an adjustable collar is a must, and you should check the fit often. There are collars for every conceivable size of dog from teacup to super gigantor. You'll need a smaller lightweight collar for a little guy and a heavy-duty wide one for the big lugs. Most pet stores are more than happy to see nonhuman shoppers, so if at all possible, take your dog with you to the store to try the collar on. You should be able to fit two fingers flat between the collar and her neck for the best fit. For training, it is recommended to us a "Martingale" collar. They're nylon collars with a loop that basically acts as a choke chain. They're much gentler on the dog's neck when you correct them. Pinch collars with the sharp metal prongs? pass …
RETIREMENT HOME WANTED URGENTLY Denzil is a German Shepherd mix about 12+ years old, found tied up in an abandoned Cortijo on the Costa del Sol, unable to walk and was dragging himself across the floor. His Spanish owners had left him there to die as they did not want to take him to the vets. After a difficult rescue and three days at the vets he can now get up and walk again. He has a condition called 'Hip Dysplasia' which is common in German Shepherds, and will need to be on joint supplements for the rest of his life, such as Cod Liver Oil Tablets. He desperately needs a loving home to spend his twilight years. He does not need much walking, is good with other dogs, not food aggressive, loves cuddles, is good in a car and is happy to live outside.
Ella is between one and two years of age. This lovely little female dog was found cowering underneath a car by a woman who brought her to the shelter. We discovered she was pregnant and was very close to having her pups. She is an adorable little dog who is being fostered during the birth and for some weeks with the pups. She would fit in with any kind caring situation — very affectionate but is afraid of walking on the lead— loves being carried. Like all our rescue dogs she's a star and looking for a permanent home.
Georgous is a four year old female Siamese. She is sterilized, and is a very loving and affectionate cat. She has already lived with us for a year. She was left at the shelter because her family had to go back to their home country and they couldn’t take her with them. She urgently needs a family that will love her. She spends all her time in an enclosed space and she badly needs to run, be happy and have space.

All dog collars should have tags with ID info and phone number attached at all times. If the metal tag's jangling bugs you, there are actually plastic tag covers you can by to prevent this. As for style, go wild! There's everything from super deluxe Swarovski crystals to funky, mod designs to crocodile skin to holiday themes to plain nylon in every conceivable colour and at every price point.
Designer leather dog collars are also available with rhinestones, the latest in canine fashion!

Finally, if you're out walking your dog at night, there are even lighted and glow-in-the-dark collars. Why not invest in more than one for any situation or style emergency

POLLY Polly is an Old English Sheepdog cross. She has Leishmania and will need medication of and on throughout her life. She arrived at the shelter in March and was in a dreadful state, now she is big and bouncy, full of fun and desperate for a home of her own. (please quote number 2009)
Maddie is one of seven Boxer/Mastin cross puppies that were brought to the kennels. They will grow to be big dogs but they are absolutely beautiful and will make wonderful pets. (please quote number 2168)
Watson is a male Bretton Spaniel. He is a lovely dog but is not enjoying being at the shelter. He would make an ideal family pet. (please quote number 2138)
We currently have over 170 dogs at the shelter, there must be one that would suit your needs — why don't you come up for a visit? We are open daily from 10am until 13.30 including weekends and holidays. ADANA, Estepona Telephone 952 11 34 67 www.adana.es

Samantha Mairs (right) presenting the cheque for 2,800 euros to the Alzheimer Association
BY DAVID JEFFERS MAIRS You may recall my mentioning in previous editions, that On Sunday the 16th of May I had leaped from an airplane, in aid of Alzheimers Research, on my first ever sponsored sky dive — the final sum raised was a fabulous total of 2,800 euros. My daughter Samantha presented the cheque, on my behalf, to the Alzheimer Association. The jump was filmed and has been uploaded to youtube. If you go to www.youtube.com and search for — David Mairs jumps for Alzheimers Research — you’ll see the jump. Many thanks once again to all involved in the fund raising with a special thank you to Roger and Rosemary for the biggest single donation.
Positively Pink Positively Pink is an organisation established here on the coast dedicated to raising money in order to fund the improvement and enhancement of early diagnosis of breast cancer and to fund a support group for Breast Cancer patients in the Malaga Province and in particular the Marbella area. The charity was founded by John and Lorraine Palmer, the owners of the beautiful Oceano Hotel, and Lorraine knows all too well the anguish and worry of breast cancer. My wife Linda, who has been diagnosed with cancer, has had first hand experience of the help and genuine concern shown by this remarkable lady. Both Linda and I can’t thank her enough for all that has been done to help through this very difficult period. The Positively Pink charity has produced a DVD, available free, which is uplifting and features local woman who have been treated for breast cancer. They tell there individual stories, including their dark days, but through positive thinking they offer encouragement and support. Their courage and strength of character is an inspiration to us all. Breast cancer has no respect for age and young woman can develop this condition as well as older woman, so it’s highly recommended that all women should have a regular scan, regardless of age. Positively Pink provides an invaluable service and needs your help to keep this service in place. All donations go to Positively Pink and El Oceano Beach Hotel absorbs all admin fees, if you would like to make a donation or help with a fund raising event, please don’t hesitate to contact us by telephone or by email: firstname.lastname@example.org

THE WOW FACTOR FINAL 2010 — venue and date to be confirmed. As mentioned above by my husband David, I’m currently back in the UK getting treatment for cancer. First of all I too would personally like to thank Lorraine from Positively Pink for everything she has done for me, words are not enough. The prognosis is good though folks and if all goes to plan I should be back to my fighting weight in a few months. Thanks to all my friends and family for their support, also to Tanya, our editor, to our readers and to all our advertisers, for all the good wishes that have been sent to me, I hope you will continue to support the magazine until I return. When I’m sure once again I’ll be chasing you all up and down the coast. I know you’ll miss me and my order pad, but not to fear… I’ll be back. Linda xx
