Dear Parishioners, Who is Jesus for you? Many in Israel recognised Jesus as a mighty man of God, even comparing him with the greatest of the prophets. Peter, always quick to respond, professed that Jesus is truly the Christ. No mortal being could have revealed this to Peter, but only God. Through the eyes of faith Peter grasped who Jesus truly was. He was the first apostle to publicly recognise Jesus as the Anointed One (also translated Messiah or Christ). Christ is the Greek word for the Hebrew word, Messiah. Peter's faith, however, was sorely tested when Jesus explained that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and die in order that God's work of redemption might be accomplished. How startled the disciples were when they heard this word! How different are God's thoughts and ways from our thoughts and ways! Through humiliation, suffering, and death on the cross Jesus broke the powers of sin and death and won for us our salvation. If we want to share in Christ's victory, then we must also take up our cross and follow him where he leads us. What is the "cross" that I must take up? When my will crosses with God's will, then his will must be done. To know Jesus Christ is to know the power of his death and resurrection. The Holy Spirit gives us the gift of faith to know Jesus personally, power to live the gospel faithfully, and courage to witness to others the joy and truth of the gospel. Who do you say that Jesus is? Yours In Christ,
Father Robert

Invocation:
Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.
Greeting:
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
(see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; and he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.
Kyrie eleison: Lord have mercy: R/: Lord have mercy Christ have mercy: R/: Christ have mercy Lord have mercy: R/: Lord have mercy 3
The Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
The Collect O God, who in smoke and fire upon Mount Sinai gave the law to Moses, and who revealed the new covenant in the fire of the Spirit: grant, we pray, that, kindled by that same Spirit which you poured forth upon your apostles, we may fulfil with joy your commandment of love. We ask this through Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Isaiah 40:27-31 27 Why
do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God’? 28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. 30 Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; 31 but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Response:
Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.
5
Psalm: 63.1-9 O God, you are my God: eagerly will I seek you. 2 My soul thirsts for you, my flesh longs for you: as a dry and thirsty land where no water is. 3 So it was when I beheld you in the sanctuary: and saw your power and your glory. 4 For your unchanging goodness is better than life: therefore my lips shall praise you. 5 And so I will bless you as long as I live: and in your name will I lift my hands on high. 6 My longing shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness: my mouth shall praise you with exultant lips. 7 When I remember you upon my bed: when I meditate upon you in the night watches, 8 How you have been my helper: then I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings, 9 Then my soul clings to you: and your right hand upholds me. 1
6
Second Reading: Galatians 3:23-4:7 23 Now
before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. 27 As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise. 4 My point is this: heirs, as long as they are minors, are no better than slaves, though they are the owners of all the property; 2 but they remain under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. 3 So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental spirits of the world. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. 6 And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ 7 So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. Response:
Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you, and also with you.
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 9 beginning at the 18th verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ 18 Once
when Jesus was praying alone, with only the disciples near him, he asked them, ‘Who do the crowds say that I am?’ 19 They answered, ‘John the Baptist; but others, Elijah; and still others, that one of the ancient prophets has arisen.’ 20 He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered, ‘The Messiah of God.’ 21 He sternly ordered and commanded them not to tell anyone, 22 saying, ‘The Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.’ 23 Then he said to them all, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it. Luke 9:18-24 Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

SERMON - followed by a short time for reflection The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 9
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for all people and for the Church throughout the world. Each petition of intercession or thanksgiving concludes with, Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for: all who work for peace and justice. We pray for: Church of North India (Abp Prem Chand Singh); Diocese of Wangaratta (Bp John Parkes, Clergy & People); Hume Anglican Grammar School (Bill Sweeney, Principal; Peter Waterhouse, Chaplain); St Edward the Confessor King Blackburn South (Rob Culhane); St Stephen’s Bayswater – pastoral service (Bp Paul Barker); Rowville and Ferntree Gully (RAFT) – pastoral service (Bp Paul Barker); All Saints, Preston – parish visit (Bp Brad Billings); St James Ivanhoe – confirmation service (Bp Genieve Blackwell). We pray for our ministry team: Robert, Robert, Pam, for Rick and Michael (with responsibility for the TGS congregation), for the choir and Sunday School, and all who serve within the parish. We pray for our Archbishop Philip and Bishop Genieve. We pray for those in need, and for those who care for them:
Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith We may by your grace receive, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
10
Jesus said: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you. John 13.34 [Let us pray] We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution [Celebrant] Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 11
[Celebrant]
THE GREETING OF PEACE (All stand) We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. and also with you.
[A greeting of peace is exchanged with those around us] Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever.
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Priest: People: Priest: People: Priest: People: Priest:
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts: We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise ... for ever praising you and saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Priest: People:
‌ do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Priest: People:
‌ in songs of never ending praise. Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. 12
As our Saviour Christ has taught us we are confident to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant}
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.
Agnus Dei We pray together: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind. 13
Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)
THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE Post Communion Prayer Prayer of self-offering Father, We offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Blessing Dismissal
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord: In the name of Christ. Amen
