Dear Parishioners, While Thomas deeply loved the Lord, he lacked the courage to stand with Jesus in his passion and crucifixion and resurrection. He was suspect about the women who saw the resurrected Jesus and he was suspect of his own fellow apostles. Thomas has been called “The Doubter.” This title does a disservice to the character of Thomas in John’s gospel. He was more than a doubter. He was a cynic. His response to the claims of the Resurrection was that of disbelief. Doubt has a place in the life of the Christian, for it can separate true faith from false assertion. But, cynicism steps over the line of doubt. The cynic not only separates faith from assertion, but narrows faith to the bare minimum, even further. They reject what they cannot see or touch. They give into prejudice against people they cannot (or will not try) to understand. They set themselves up through a sense of worth, entitlement and or authority as the arbiter of what is right or wrong, true or untrue, good or bad. These can be very hard people indeed to live with in any Christian community. When Thomas finally had the courage to rejoin the other apostles, the Lord Jesus made his presence known to him and reassured him that he had indeed overcome death and risen again. When Thomas recognised his Master, he believed and exclaimed that Jesus was truly Lord and truly God! Through the gift of faith we, too, proclaim that Jesus is our personal Lord and our God. He died and rose that we, too, might have new life in him. The Lord offers each of us new life in his Holy Spirit that we may know him personally and walk in this new way of life through the power of his resurrection where there is no room for cynicism. Do you really believe in God's word and the power of the Holy Spirit? Yours in Christ,
Fr Robert

Do not doubt but believe.’ The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Acts 5:12-16 12 Now
many signs and wonders were done among the people through the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. 13 None of the rest dared to join them, but the people held them in high esteem. 14 Yet more than ever believers were added to the Lord, great numbers of both men and women, 15 so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on cots and mats, in order that Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he came by. 16 A great number of people would also gather from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all cured. Response:
Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Psalm: 118.19-29 Open me the gates of righteousness: and I will enter and give thanks to the Lord. 20 This is the gate of the Lord: the righteous shall enter it. 21 I will praise you, for you answered me: and have become my salvation. 22 The stone that the builders rejected: has become the head of the corner. 23 This is the Lord’s doing: and it is marvellous in our eyes. 24 This is the day that the Lord has made: let us rejoice and be glad in it. 25 O Lord save us we pray: O Lord send us prosperity. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord: from the house of the Lord we bless you. 27 The Lord is God and he has given us light: guide the festal throng up to the horns of the altar. 28 You are my God and I will praise you: you are my God I will exalt you. 29 O give thanks to the Lord for he is good: and his mercy endures forever. 19

Second Reading: Revelation 1:9-19 9 I,
John, your brother who share with you in Jesus the persecution and the kingdom and the patient endurance, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 I was in the spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet 11 saying, ‘Write in a book what you see and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamum, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.’ 12 Then I turned to see whose voice it was that spoke to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands I saw one like the Son of Man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash across his chest. 14 His head and his hair were white as white wool, white as snow; his eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined as in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, and from his mouth came a sharp, two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining with full force. 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he placed his right hand on me, saying, ‘Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I was dead, and see, I am alive for ever and ever; and I have the keys of Death and of Hades. 19 Now write what you have seen, what is, and what is to take place after this. Response:
Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you, and also with you.
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 20 beginning at the 19th verse. Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ 19 When
it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’ 24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’ 26 A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 27 Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ 28 Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ 29 Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’ 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. John 20:19-31 Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. 9
SERMON - followed by a short time for reflection The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 10
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for all people and for the Church throughout the world. Each petition of intercession or thanksgiving concludes with, Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for: all who work for peace and justice. We pray for: Anglican Communion in Japan (Abp Nathaniel Makoto Uematsu); Diocese of Adelaide (Abp Geoff Smith, Asst Bishops Timothy Harris, Christopher McLeod; Clergy & People); Department of Theological Education (Bp Brad Billings, Assistant Bishop, Monomeeth Episcopate); St Michael & All Angels' Beaumaris (Andrew Lake, Robert McUtchen); Holy Trinity Cathedral Yangon, Myanmar (Bp Paul Barker); St Andrew’s Corio – confirmation service (Bp Kate Prowd). We pray for our ministry team: Robert, Robert, Pam, for Rick and Michael (with responsibility for the TGS congregation), for the choir and Sunday School, and all who serve within the parish. We pray for our Archbishop Philip and Bishop Genieve. We pray for those in need, and for those who care for them: Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith We may by your grace receive, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
11
Jesus said: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you. John 13.34 [Let us pray] We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution [Celebrant] Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 12

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Priest: People: Priest: People: Priest: People: Priest:
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts: We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise ... for ever praising you and saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
Priest: People:
‌ do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Priest: People:
‌ in songs of never ending praise. Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. 13
As our Saviour Christ has taught us we are confident to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant}
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.
Agnus Dei We pray together: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind. 14
Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)
THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE Post Communion Prayer Prayer of self-offering Father, We offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Blessing Dismissal
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord: In the name of Christ. Amen
