Dear Parishioners, What can blind us or keep us from recognising and remembering God's glory in our lives? Our Christian faith with the Holy Spirit allows and helps us if we truly want to see what is hidden or unseen to the naked eye. Through the eyes of faith Abraham recognised God and God's call on his life. He saw from afar not only what God intended for him, but for his descendants as well - an everlasting covenant of friendship and peace with the living God. Faith makes us taste in advance the light of God's glory when we shall see him face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12; 1 John 3:2). Are you prepared to see God's glory? God is eager to share his glory with us! We get a glimpse of this when the disciples see Jesus transfigured on the mountain. Jesus' face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white (Mark 9:2,3). When Moses met with God on Mount Sinai the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God (see Exodus 34:29). Paul says that the Israelites could not look at Moses' face because of its brightness (2 Corinthians 3:7). In the Gospel account Jesus appeared in glory with Moses, the great lawgiver of Israel, and with Elijah, the greatest of the prophets, in the presence of three of his beloved apostles - Peter, James, and John. What is the significance and importance of this mysterious appearance? Jesus went to the mountain knowing full well what awaited him in Jerusalem - his betrayal, rejection and crucifixion. Jesus very likely discussed this momentous decision to go to the cross with Moses and Elijah. God the Father also spoke with Jesus and gave his approval: This is my beloved Son; listen to him. The Father glorified his son because he obeyed. The cloud which overshadowed Jesus and his apostles fulfilled the dream of the Jews that when the Messiah came the cloud of God's presence would fill the temple again (see Exodus 16:10, 19:9, 33:9; 1 Kings 8:10). The Lord Jesus not only wants us to see his glory - he wants to share this glory with us. And Jesus shows us the way to the Father's glory: follow me - obey my words - take the path I have chosen for you and you will receive the blessings of my Father's kingdom - your name will be written in heaven.

2

Jesus succeeded in his mission because he went to Calvary so that Paradise would be restored to us once again. He embraced the cross to obtain the crown of glory that awaits each one of us, if we will follow in his footsteps. Origen (185-254 AD), an early church bible scholar and writer, shows us how the transfiguration can change our lives: "When he is transfigured, his face also shines as the sun that he may be manifested to the children of light who have put off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light, and are no longer the children of darkness or night but have become the sons of day, and walk honestly as in the day. Being manifest, he will shine unto them not simply as the sun, but as demonstrated to be the sun of righteousness. (1) Yours In Christ, Fr Robert (1) Ante-Nicene Fathers, Vol IX: Origen's Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew.: Chapter XXXVII 37. https://st-takla.org/books/en/ecf/009/0090434.html

Hymn: King of glory, King of peace NEH 391

1. King of glory, King of peace, I will love thee; and, that love may never cease, I will move thee. Thou hast granted my request, thou hast heard me; thou didst note my working breast, thou hast spared me.

3. Seven whole days, not one in seven, I will praise thee; in my heart, though not in heaven, I can raise thee. Small it is, in this poor sort to enrol thee: ev’n eternity’s too short to extol thee.

2. Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing thee, and the cream of all my heart I will bring thee. Though my sins against me cried, thou didst clear me; and alone, when they replied, thou didst hear me.

George Herbert 1593–1633

Invocation:

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. 4

Sentence: Our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Sunday School now departs to the Memorial Chapel. Any children in the congregation are welcome to join them.

The Collect God of our ancestors, whose chosen servant Abraham was given faith to obey your call and go out into the unknown: endow your Church with such faith that we may follow you with courage; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Genesis 15:5-18 5 He

brought him outside and said, ‘Look towards heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.’ Then he said to him, ‘So shall your descendants be.’ 6 And he believed the LORD; and the LORD[a] reckoned it to him as righteousness. 7 Then he said to him, ‘I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess.’ 8 But he said, ‘O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?’ 9 He said to him, ‘Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtle-dove, and a young pigeon.’ 10 He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. 11 And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. 12 As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him. 13 Then the LORD[b] said to Abram, ‘Know this for certain, that your offspring shall be aliens in a land that is not theirs, and shall be slaves there, and they shall be oppressed for four hundred years; 14 but I will bring judgement on the nation that they serve, and afterwards they shall come out with great possessions. 15 As for yourself, you shall go to your ancestors in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. 16 And they shall come back here in the fourth generation; for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.’ 17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire-pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. 18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, ‘To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Psalm: 27:9-17

O Lord, hear my | voice· when I | cry: have | mercy· up|on me· and | answer me. 10 My heart has said of you, | ‘Seek his | face’: your | face Lord | I will | seek. 9

Do not | hide your | face from me: or thrust your | servant· a|side· in dis|pleasure; 12 For you have | been my | helper: do not cast me away or forsake me, O | God of | my sal|vation. 11

Though my father and my | mother· for|sake me: the | Lord will | take me | up. 14 Teach me your | way, O | Lord: and lead me in an even path, | for they | lie in | wait for me. 13

Do not give me over to the | will of· my | enemies: for false witnesses have risen against me, and | those who | breathe out | violence. 16 But I believe that I shall surely see the | goodness· of the | Lord: in the | land | of the | living. 15

2nd half of Chant: 17

O wait for the Lord; stand firm and he will | strengthen· your | heart: and | wait, I | say,· for the | Lord. Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men. 9

Second Reading: Philippians 3:17-4:1 4 Brothers

and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us. 18 For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. 19 Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. 21 He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. 1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: Soul of my saviour, sanctify my breast NEH 305

1. Soul of my Saviour, sanctify my breast; body of Christ, be thou my saving guest; blood of my Saviour, bathe me in thy tide; wash me with water flowing from thy side. 2. Strength and protection may thy Passion be; O blessèd Jesu, hear and answer me: deep in thy wounds, Lord, hide and shelter me; so shall I never, never part from thee. 3. Guard and defend me from the foe malign; in death's dread moments make me only thine; call me, and bid me come to thee on high, where I may praise thee with thy saints for ay. Anon. WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you, and also with you. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 9 beginning at the 28th verse.

Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30 Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. 31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah’—not knowing what he said. 34 While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. 35 Then from the cloud came a voice that said, ‘This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!’ 36 When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen. Luke 9:28b-36 Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

13

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for all people and for the Church throughout the world. Each petition of intercession or thanksgiving concludes with, Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Offertory Hymn: Dear Lord and Father of mankind NEH 353

1. Dear Lord and Father of mankind, Forgive our foolish ways! Re-clothe us in our rightful mind, In purer lives Thy service find, In deeper reverence, praise.

4. Drop Thy still dews of quietness, Till all our strivings cease; Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of Thy peace.

2. In simple trust like theirs who heard, Beside the Syrian sea, The gracious calling of the Lord, Let us, like them, without a word Rise up and follow Thee.

5. Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and Thy balm; Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still, small voice of calm!

3. O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, Where Jesus knelt to share with Thee The silence of eternity Interpreted by love!

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Turn thee again, O Lord Attwood. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

Final Hymn: Jesu, Lord of life and glory NEH 68

1 Jesu, Lord of life and glory, bend from heaven thy gracious ear; while our waiting souls adore thee, Friend of helpless sinners, hear: by thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord.

4 In the weary hours of sickness, in the times of grief and pain, when we feel our mortal weakness, when the creature's help is vain: by thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord.

2 From the depth of nature's blindness, from the hardening power of sin, from all malice and unkindness, from the pride that lurks within: by thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord.

5 In the solemn hour of dying, in the awful judgement day, may our souls, on thee relying, find thee still our rock and stay: by thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord. 6 Jesu, may thy promised blessing Comfort to our souls afford; May we now, thy love possessing, And at length our full reward, Ever praise thee, Good and ever-glorious Lord.

3 When temptation sorely presses, In the day of Satan's power, In our times of deep distresses, In each dark and trying hour: by thy mercy, O deliver us, good Lord.

20

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE Post-Communion Prayer Prayer of self-offering Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Blessing

Dismissal Go in peace to love and serve the Lord: In the name of Christ. Amen

Church Access: Church: Access is through the Pakington Street entrance. The Chapel door is open for Wednesday services. Church Office: Access is at the northern end of the Church off Pakington Street via the carpark. Vicarage & Memorial Garden: Access is either via the carpark or, through the Chapel door if inside the Church. Church Carpark: Devco are very kindly allowing the HTK carpark to be used by parishioners on a Sunday for Church services. It will only be open BETWEEN 7.30AM AND 1.00PM however, so if you are intending to be at the Church after that time, please ensure you remove your car from the carpark prior to 1.00pm to avoid being locked in until Monday morning. Please remember that the carpark is still part of the building site and subject to insurance restrictions, and Devco are really doing us a huge favour by allowing us to use the carpark, so please keep a very close eye on all children and be careful yourselves, so this privilege is not jeopardised. If there are any issues whatsoever, the carpark will be closed until the entire development is complete. National Trust Appeal - HTK’s National Trust Appeal has been of huge benefit to the Parish, allowing vital maintenance on the Church that we would have otherwise struggled to fund. We are about to commence work on the Vicarage roof, which is leaking, and the total cost of this is around $100,000 so any donations, small or large, towards this would be very gratefully accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Donation forms are in the rack at the back of the church or speak to Brenda in the church office or call Alan Wilson on 0414 470 460.

Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety Holy Trinity Child and Vulnerable Persons Policy. The Parish Council (upon the recommendations of HTK Child and Vulnerable Person sub-committee) has endorsed the Holy Trinity Child Safe and Vulnerable Persons Policy. Holy Trinity Kew is committed to protecting the safety of young people and vulnerable adults who participate in its programs, ministries and events. This includes the Sunday School and the Choir. On 22 March 2018, the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne approved a Code of Conduct for Child Safety. There are copies of the Holy Trinity Child Safe Policy and the Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety at the back of the church for your attention. Each parishioner is urged to read Child Safe Policy and the Code of Conduct. If you are an adult who has regular contact with children (anyone under the age of 18 years) you will be requested to make a Statement of Commitment for the Code of Conduct for Child Safety. This process has commenced and will continue in the coming weeks. The Parish Council and the Holy Trinity Child Safe Sub Committee thank you for your continued support and co-operation in promoting a Child Safe parish. If you have any queries in relation to these matters please do not hesitate to contact either Rev’d Robert Newton or a member of the Child Safe Sub-Committee. 4th March 2019 Dear Parishioners, I should like to thank those who have made contributions through the year to the ongoing finances of the parish through the open plate, via giving envelopes, direct debits to the ADF (Anglican Development Fund) for the benefit of the parish and those who give by direct debit to the parish offertory account. Also, many thanks to those who have made generous cash donations to specific projects in the parish via the National Trust and/or outright cash gifts which have offset deductions from ordinary parish expenditure. Without all these generous financial offerings ongoing such ministries as the leadership and ministry of the Vicar, the Chaplain, the Director of Music and Office Manager will have to be curtailed along with resources for Family, Youth and Children’s ministry. These efforts and allocations I know, are backed up by many hours of generous volunteer time given by good lay and ordained people in the parish to enhance/support professional ministry, which I give thanks for. As we look to the next five years we have to devise strategies to build up what we offer within our church and the wider community. As mentioned last year there is no doubt in my mind that some formal youth ministry in tandem with the opening of our new Parish Centre will have to be undertaken in the next three years if we are to keep and nurture any children as they leave Sunday School. With the completion of our property development a matter of weeks away and the need to address major physical property decline in the Vicarage and turn it from a liability to an asset along with our halls and Church we need to be providing significant increases in financial giving and of our time and talents, to build up our ministries (especially children, youth and families) and restore our site and its buildings to a real asset basis. Regular, consistent giving through the ADF, or in the form of direct debit to the parish offertory account make it much easier for the parish to budget for the future (so please consider these methods if you do not at the moment). 25

Previous generations of parishioners have shown an amazing love, sacrifice and commitment for Holy Trinity which we are the inheritors of and custodians. With this selfless, sacrificial generosity in mind you will notice a note in the upcoming Trinity Times asking people to consider Holy Trinity Kew in their will by form of a bequest. A consideration by you in your will for Holy Trinity would have the same cumulative effect as an endowment of preservation/support that previous generations have given us with our beautifully adorned church building and grounds. If you should like to pursue this further feel free to contact Alan Wilson on 0414470460 for a confidential initial chat. The Parish Centre will eventually offer us some financial resources to maintain all our buildings and boost ministry resources through the utility of the building itself. However, it will be no "cash cow" or mean that we can slacken off in our financial giving which is effectively for mission and ministry. The finances from the Parish Centre will all be needed to pay off the substantial loan to the ADF and maintain and run all our buildings. I ask you this week to think about the many gifts God has given you through being a parishioner at Holy Trinity Kew and how God might be calling you to continue to give of your utmost so that others in the future may have the same opportunities for God’s grace that you have received here in this special and holy place. In the light of all what has been mentioned above I therefore ask that you seriously consider raising your financial giving over the next year and to seriously think and pray about including Holy Trinity in your will? If you would like to talk to me or the Churchwardens or the Treasurer about anything I have included in this letter, please feel free to approach us. As I quoted from Holy Scripture last year I will continue to quote: “The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:6-7) Yours in Christ, Father Robert
