Dear Parishioners, As we begin Lent a few thoughts: We think of conceit as a pride or boastfulness, but the English translation for Paul’s exhortation to “do nothing from selfishness or conceit” in his letter to the Philippians falls short of the mark. The King James translation was better when it said do nothing from “vain glory.” The Greek word kenodoxia actually means “empty glory.” Paul teaches that many of the actions we dislike in others (and ourselves!) arise from an emptiness of glory. He says, “do nothing fuelled by that emptiness.” Acting from our empty glory is the root of many of our harmful actions. When repentance merely consists of commitment to modify behaviour, it misses our core motives. It’s like taking cough syrup for lung cancer; it may momentarily quiet the symptoms, but it doesn’t address the disease. When we feel empty of glory, something inside of us seeks to fill that emptiness. Whenever we try to self-satisfy our hunger for glory, we end up acting contrary to the new nature Christ has given us. And not only do we act wrongly, we also leave a wake of destruction caused by the sucking vacuum of our emptiness. Now take a moment and reflect on how we each fill our own emptiness: Do we always have to be right, in control or in charge? Do we always want to dictate terms? Are we constantly seeking affirmation? Are we angry about perceived injustices? Are we constantly expressing, “Woe is me, I am so hurt, poor me.” Do others consider us arrogant? How do we handle criticism, just or unjust? Do we frequently think of our own hard work or our relative goodness or intelligence or success? True repentance transcends the mere mouthing of commitment to behaviour change. It is a change of heart and mind. It is a movement from trying to fill myself toward a heart that is filled by the glory and love of Christ. It means going to God in our emptiness and allowing him to fill that void with his love and care. We stop acting out of our old hearts and begin operating from our new hearts. 2

This is why the Lenten season is so important because it calls us to repent of our sins, to read the Bible more, to study with others, to be reflective, to give alms and do more for our neighbour and the Church and at all times to pray and seek amendment of life. That is why the liturgies and music for Lent and Holy Week are filled with a sombre theme to remind us about what we are supposed to be doing. The great hymns written by the great hymn writers of our tradition for Lent are full of awe and fear in their words and haunting in their music for a reason. They are not outdated or old fashioned, but rightly reflect upon our sin and shortcomings and pull no punches. If we find that uncomfortable or unpleasant to a degree- that’s good! In a world where sin is treated lightly we need the Ancients to remind us why their Church was so strong- for it was built on a true love, respect and fear of God. This is the deep repentance – the change of heart and mind – that we need for a rich life. It is seeing that the significance and importance we need in our hearts can only be satisfied by seeing what Christ gave for us in order to have us. It is hearing God say we are his beloved. So, in the moment of confessing our betrayal of Christ; in the moment of emptying our self-glory – in that moment, Christ fills us with a sense of his incredible love. We see him loving us even in the midst of our betrayal, and now we care far less that someone betrayed us or were unjust. All of a sudden, we no longer look for “justice” or the satisfaction of “rights”. All of a sudden we begin to be filled with a sense of love not justification. In that moment, we are filled and we reconcile our thoughts, our words and our behaviour to the standard of Christ. Yours In Christ, Fr Robert

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: â€œThou knowest, Lordâ€? Purcell. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Mother Prioress and the Carmelite Nuns extend a cordial invitation to the congregation at Holy Trinity to attend the 42nd Interfaith Ecumenical Gathering of the Kew Community Festival at the Carmelite Monastery Church, 94 Stevenson St, Kew on Sunday, March 17th, 2019, 2:30pm. Please add your name to the sign-up sheet at the back of the church by March 3rd if you are interested in attending. Trinity Times Editorship position The Vicar is looking for an editor of the Trinity Times for the Winter (August 2019) edition onwards. The Vicar will be editing the Easter Trinity Times in the meantime. The Parish needs someone who can pull together material from the parish and coordinate publication with expert assistance in the areas of collation, printing and getting ready for delivery. There are three editions a year, Christmas, Easter and Winter. A three-year voluntary appointment is anticipated in the first instance. Efforts and Investigations into advertising revenue would be an advantage. Church Access: Church: Access is through the Pakington Street entrance. The Chapel door is open for Wednesday services. Church Office: Access is at the northern end of the Church off Pakington Street via the carpark. Vicarage & Memorial Garden: Access is either via the carpark or, through the Chapel door if inside the Church. Church Carpark: Devco are very kindly allowing the HTK carpark to be used by parishioners on a Sunday for Church services. It will only be open BETWEEN 7.30AM AND 1.00PM however, so if you are intending to be at the Church after that time, please ensure you remove your car from the carpark prior to 1.00pm to avoid being locked in until Monday morning. Please remember that the carpark is still part of the building site and subject to insurance restrictions, and Devco are really doing us a huge favour by allowing us to use the carpark, so please keep a very close eye on all children and be careful yourselves, so this privilege is not jeopardised. If there are any issues whatsoever, the carpark will be closed until the entire development is complete.

National Trust Appeal - HTKâ€™s National Trust Appeal has been of huge benefit to the Parish, allowing vital maintenance on the Church that we would have otherwise struggled to fund. We are about to commence work on the Vicarage roof, which is leaking, and the total cost of this is around $100,000 so any donations, small or large, towards this would be very gratefully accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Donation forms are in the rack at the back of the church or speak to Brenda in the church office or call Alan Wilson on 0414 470 460.

Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety Holy Trinity Child and Vulnerable Persons Policy. The Parish Council (upon the recommendations of HTK Child and Vulnerable Person sub-committee) has endorsed the Holy Trinity Child Safe and Vulnerable Persons Policy. Holy Trinity Kew is committed to protecting the safety of young people and vulnerable adults who participate in its programs, ministries and events. This includes the Sunday School and the Choir. On 22 March 2018, the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne approved a Code of Conduct for Child Safety. There are copies of the Holy Trinity Child Safe Policy and the Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety at the back of the church for your attention. Each parishioner is urged to read Child Safe Policy and the Code of Conduct. If you are an adult who has regular contact with children (anyone under the age of 18 years) you will be requested to make a Statement of Commitment for the Code of Conduct for Child Safety. This process has commenced and will continue in the coming weeks. 4th March 2019 Dear Parishioners, I should like to thank those who have made contributions through the year to the ongoing finances of the parish through the open plate, via giving envelopes, direct debits to the ADF (Anglican Development Fund) for the benefit of the parish and those who give by direct debit to the parish offertory account. Also, many thanks to those who have made generous cash donations to specific projects in the parish via the National Trust and/or outright cash gifts which have offset deductions from ordinary parish expenditure. Without all these generous financial offerings ongoing such ministries as the leadership and ministry of the Vicar, the Chaplain, the Director of Music and Office Manager will have to be curtailed along with resources for Family, Youth and Childrenâ€™s ministry. These efforts and allocations I know, are backed up by many hours of generous volunteer time given by good lay and ordained people in the parish to enhance/support professional ministry, which I give thanks for. As we look to the next five years we have to devise strategies to build up what we offer within our church and the wider community. As mentioned last year there is no doubt in my mind that some formal youth ministry in tandem with the opening of our new Parish Centre will have to be undertaken in the next three years if we are to keep and nurture any children as they leave Sunday School. With the completion of our property development a matter of weeks away and the need to address major physical property decline in the Vicarage and turn it from a liability to an asset along with our halls and Church we need to be providing significant increases in financial giving and of our time and talents, to build up our ministries (especially children, youth and families) and restore our site and its buildings to a real asset basis. Regular, consistent giving through the ADF, or in the form of direct debit to the parish offertory account make it much easier for the parish to budget for the future (so please consider these methods if you do not at the moment). 28

Previous generations of parishioners have shown an amazing love, sacrifice and commitment for Holy Trinity which we are the inheritors of and custodians. With this selfless, sacrificial generosity in mind you will notice a note in the upcoming Trinity Times asking people to consider Holy Trinity Kew in their will by form of a bequest. A consideration by you in your will for Holy Trinity would have the same cumulative effect as an endowment of preservation/support that previous generations have given us with our beautifully adorned church building and grounds. If you should like to pursue this further feel free to contact Alan Wilson on 0414470460 for a confidential initial chat. The Parish Centre will eventually offer us some financial resources to maintain all our buildings and boost ministry resources through the utility of the building itself. However, it will be no "cash cow" or mean that we can slacken off in our financial giving which is effectively for mission and ministry. The finances from the Parish Centre will all be needed to pay off the substantial loan to the ADF and maintain and run all our buildings. I ask you this week to think about the many gifts God has given you through being a parishioner at Holy Trinity Kew and how God might be calling you to continue to give of your utmost so that others in the future may have the same opportunities for Godâ€™s grace that you have received here in this special and holy place. In the light of all what has been mentioned above I therefore ask that you seriously consider raising your financial giving over the next year and to seriously think and pray about including Holy Trinity in your will?
