Welcome to Holy Trinity, where services have been held, in this church, since 1863. We pray that you will feel the presence of God and know his blessings in your life. You are invited to Morning Tea after today’s service in the Vicarage. CHURCH TOILETS CURRENTLY LOCATED IN VICARAGE Crèche Area: is in the transept near the pulpit. Parents and children are welcome to enter by the church aisle or by the side door.

Dear Parishioners, Jesus states a truth we can stake our lives on: what you give to others (and how you treat others) will return to you (Mark 4:24). The Lord knows our faults and he sees all, even the imperfections and sins of the heart which we cannot recognise in ourselves. Do you trust in God's mercy and grace? Ask the Lord to fill your heart with his loving-kindness and mercy that you may only have room for charity and kindness towards your neighbour. Jesus connects soundness with good fruit. Something is sound when it is free from defect, decay, or disease and is healthy. Good fruit is the result of sound living - living according to moral truth and upright character. The fruits of falsehood produce an easy religion which takes the iron out of religion, the cross out of Christianity, and any teaching which eliminates the hard sayings of Jesus, and which push the judgments of God into the background and makes us think lightly of sin. Those who are true to God know that their strength lies not in themselves but in God who supplies everything we need to live as his disciples. The Lord strengthens us with the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit - with faith, hope and love, justice, prudence, fortitude and temperance. And we grow in godly character through exercising the gifts and strength which God supplies. Do you want to bear good fruit in your daily life? Allow the Holy Spirit to train you in godliness and the wisdom to distinguish good fruit from bad fruit. Yours in Christ,

Fr Robert

Hymn: Let all mortal flesh keep silence NEH 295

1. Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly-minded, for with blessing in his hand, Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand.

3. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away. 4. At his feet the six-winged seraph, cherubim, with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Lord Most High!

2. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood; he will give to all the faithful his own self for heavenly food.

Invocation:

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting:

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Sentence: And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. 3

The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

4

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Kyrie eleison

The Collect O God, glorious and faithful, you reveal the beauty of your face to those who seek you with a sincere heart: strengthen us in faith to embrace the mystery of the cross, and open our hearts to its transforming power, so that, clinging in love to your will for us, we may walk as followers of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Ecclesiastes 10:8-14 8 If

you dig a pit, you fall in it; if you break through a wall, a snake bites you. 9 If you work in a stone quarry, you get hurt by stones. If you split wood, you get hurt doing it. 10 If your axe is dull and you don't sharpen it, you have to work harder to use it. It is smarter to plan ahead. 11 Knowing how to charm a snake is of no use if you let the snake bite first. 12 What the wise say brings them honour, but fools are destroyed by their own words. 13 They start out with silly talk and end up with pure madness. 14 A fool talks on and on. No one knows what is going to happen next, and no one can tell us what will happen after we die. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Psalm: 92:5-15

5 Lord how glorious|are your|works: your|thoughts are|very|deep. 6 The brutish do|not con|sider: and the|fool • cannot|under|stand 7 That though the wicked|sprout like|grass: and|all wrong|doers|flourish, 8 They flourish to be de|stroyed • for|ever: but you Lord are ex|alted • for|ever|more. 9 For behold your enemies O Lord, your|enemies • shall|perish: and all the workers of|wicked • ness|shall be|scattered. 10 You have lifted up my head like the horns of the|wild|oxen: I am an|ointed • with|fresh|oil; 11 My eyes have looked|down • on my|enemies: and my ears have heard the ruin of|those who • rose|up a|gainst me. 12 The righteous shall|flourish • like the|palm tree: they shall spread a|broad • like a|cedar • in|Lebanon; 13 For they are planted in the|house • of the|Lord: and flourish in the|courts of|our|God. 14 In old age they shall be|full of|sap: they shall be|sturdy • and|laden • with|branches; 8

2nd half of Chant: 15 And they will say that the|Lord is|just: the Lord my Rock in|whom is|no un|righteousness. Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:54-58 54 So

when the perishable is lost in the imperishable, the mortal lost in the immortal, this saying will come true: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory’ ‘O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?’ 55-57 It is sin which gives death its power, and it is the Law which gives sin its strength. All thanks to God, then, who gives us the victory over these things through our Lord Jesus Christ! 58 And so brothers of mine, stand firm! Let nothing move you as you busy yourselves in the Lord’s work. Be sure that nothing you do for him is ever lost or ever wasted. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 9

Gradual Hymn: Alleluya! Alleyuya! NEH 103

1. Alleluia, alleluia! Hearts to heaven and voices raise: sing to God a hymn of gladness, sing to God a hymn of praise. He, who on the cross a victim, for the world's salvation bled, Jesus Christ, the King of glory, now is risen from the dead.

3. Christ is risen, we are risen! Shed upon us heavenly grace, rain and dew and gleams of glory from the brightness of thy face; that we, with our hearts in heaven, here on earth may fruitful be, and by angel hands be gathered, and be ever safe with thee.

2. Christ is risen, Christ, the first fruits of the holy harvest field, which will all its full abundance at his second coming yield: then the golden ears of harvest will their heads before him wave, ripened by his glorious sunshine from the furrows of the grave.

4. Alleluia, alleluia! Glory be to God on high; Alleluia! to the Saviour who has gained the victory; Glory to the Holy Spirit, fount of love and sanctity: Alleluia, alleluia! to the Triune Majesty.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA Sung by Choir & Congregation 10

The Lord be with you, and also with you. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 6 beginning at the 39th verse.

39-40 Then

he gave them an illustration—“Can one blind man be guide to another blind man? Surely they will both fall into the ditch together. A disciple is not above his teacher, but when he is fully trained he will be like his teacher.” 41-42 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and fail to notice the plank in your own? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye’ when you cannot see the plank in your own? You fraud, take the plank out of your own eye first and then you can see clearly enough to remove your brother’s speck.” 43-45 “It is impossible for a good tree to produce bad fruit—as impossible as it is for a bad tree to produce good fruit. Do not men know what a tree is by its fruit? You cannot pick figs from briars, or gather a bunch of grapes from a blackberry bush! A good man produces good things from the good stored up in his heart, and a bad man produce evil things from his own stores of evil. For a man’s words will always express what has been treasured in his heart.” 46 “And what is the point of calling me, ‘Lord, Lord’, without doing what I tell you to do?” 47-48 “Let me show you what the man who comes to me, hears what I have to say, and puts it into practice, is really like. He is like a man building a house, who dug down to rock-bottom and laid the foundation of his house upon it. Then when the flood came and flood-water swept down upon that house, it could not shift it because it was properly built.” Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

Offertory Hymn: The Church’s one foundation NEH 484 (Tune 167)

1. The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord: she is his new creation by water and the word; from heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died.

4. ‘Mid toil and tribulation and tumult of her war she waits the consummation of peace for evermore, till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blessed, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.

2. Elect from every nation yet one o'er all the earth, her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth: one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses with every grace endued.

5. Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. Samuel John Stone 1839-1900

3. Though with a scornful wonder Men see her sore opprest, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, 'How long?' and soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 14

Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Priest: People: Priest: People: Priest: People: Priest:

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Manducaverunt, Ludovico Balbi. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

Final Hymn: All hail the power of Jesu’s name NEH 332

1. All hail the power of Jesu’s name; let angels prostrate fall; bring forth the royal diadem to crown him Lord of all. 2. Crown him, ye morning stars of light, Who fixed this floating ball; Now hail the Strength of Israel’s might, And crown him Lord of all.

5. Hail him, ye heirs of David’s line, Whom David Lord did call; The God incarnate, Man divine, And crown him Lord of all. 6. Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget the wormwood and the gall, go spread your trophies at his feet and crown him Lord of all.

3. Crown him, ye martyrs of your God, who from his altar call; praise him whose way of pain ye trod, and crown him Lord of all.

7. Let every tribe and every tongue to him their hearts enthral, lift high the universal song and crown him Lord of all.

4. Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race ye ransomed of the fall, hail him who saves you by his grace, and crown him Lord of all.

Please remember that the carpark is still part of the building site and subject to insurance restrictions, and Devco are really doing us a huge favour by allowing us to use the carpark, so please keep a very close eye on all children and be careful yourselves, so this privilege is not jeopardised. If there are any issues whatsoever, the carpark will be closed until the entire development is complete.

National Trust Appeal - HTK’s National Trust Appeal has been of huge benefit to the Parish, allowing vital maintenance on the Church that we would have otherwise struggled to fund. We are about to commence work on the Vicarage roof, which is leaking, and the total cost of this is around $100,000 so any donations, small or large, towards this would be very gratefully accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Donation forms are in the rack at the back of the church or speak to Brenda in the church office or call Alan Wilson on 0414 470 460.

Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety Holy Trinity Child and Vulnerable Persons Policy. The Parish Council (upon the recommendations of HTK Child and Vulnerable Person sub-committee) has endorsed the Holy Trinity Child Safe and Vulnerable Persons Policy. Holy Trinity Kew is committed to protecting the safety of young people and vulnerable adults who participate in its programs, ministries and events. This includes the Sunday School and the Choir. On 22 March 2018, the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne approved a Code of Conduct for Child Safety. There are copies of the Holy Trinity Child Safe Policy and the Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety at the back of the church for your attention. Each parishioner is urged to read Child Safe Policy and the Code of Conduct. If you are an adult who has regular contact with children (anyone under the age of 18 years) you will be requested to make a Statement of Commitment for the Code of Conduct for Child Safety. This process has commenced and will continue in the coming weeks. The Parish Council and the Holy Trinity Child Safe Sub Committee thank you for your continued support and co-operation in promoting a Child Safe parish. If you have any queries in relation to these matters please do not hesitate to contact either Rev’d Robert Newton or a member of the Child Safe Sub-Committee. 4th March 2019 Dear Parishioners, I should like to thank those who have made contributions through the year to the ongoing finances of the parish through the open plate, via giving envelopes, direct debits to the ADF (Anglican Development Fund) for the benefit of the parish and those who give by direct debit to the parish offertory account. Also many thanks to those who have made generous cash donations to specific projects in the parish via the National Trust and/or outright cash gifts which have offset deductions from ordinary parish expenditure. Without all these generous financial offerings ongoing such ministries as the leadership and ministry of the Vicar, the Chaplain, the Director of Music and Office Manager will have to be curtailed along with resources for Family, Youth and Children’s ministry. These efforts and allocations I know, are backed up by many hours of generous volunteer time given by good lay and ordained people in the parish to enhance/support professional ministry, which I give thanks for. As we look to the next five years we have to devise strategies to build up what we offer within our church and the wider community. As mentioned last year there is no doubt in my mind that some formal youth ministry in tandem with the opening of our new Parish Centre will have to be undertaken in the next three years if we are to keep and nurture any children as they leave Sunday School. With the completion of our property development a matter of weeks away and the need to address major physical property decline in the Vicarage and turn it from a liability to an asset along with our halls and Church we need to be providing significant increases in financial giving and of our time and talents, to build up our ministries (especially children, youth and families) and restore our site and its buildings to a real asset basis. Regular consistent giving through the ADF, or in the form of direct debit to the parish offertory account make it much easier for the parish to budget for the future (so please consider these methods if you do not at the moment). 25

Previous generations of parishioners have shown an amazing love, sacrifice and commitment for Holy Trinity which we are the inheritors of and custodians. With this selfless, sacrificial generosity in mind you will notice a note in the upcoming Trinity Times asking people to consider Holy Trinity Kew in their will by form of a bequest. A consideration by you in your will for Holy Trinity would have the same cumulative effect as an endowment of preservation/support that previous generations have given us with our beautifully adorned church building and grounds. If you should like to pursue this further feel free to contact Alan Wilson on 0414470460 for a confidential initial chat. The Parish Centre will eventually offer us some financial resources to maintain all our buildings and boost ministry resources through the utility of the building itself. However, it will be no "cash cow" or mean that we can slacken off in our financial giving which is effectively for mission and ministry. The finances from the Parish Centre will all be needed to pay off the substantial loan to the ADF and maintain and run all our buildings. I ask you this week to think about the many gifts God has given you through being a parishioner at Holy Trinity Kew and how God might be calling you to continue to give of your utmost so that others in the future may have the same opportunities for God’s grace that you have received here in this special and holy place. In the light of all what has been mentioned above I therefore ask that you seriously consider raising your financial giving over the next year and to seriously think and pray about including Holy Trinity in your will? If you would like to talk to me or the Churchwardens or the Treasurer about anything I have included in this letter, please feel free to approach us. As I quoted from Holy Scripture last year I will continue to quote: “The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:6-7) Yours in Christ, Father Robert
