Dear Parishioners, When Jesus first proclaimed the good news of God's kingdom to his own people at Nazareth he did not hesitate to tackle them about their sin of indifference and unbelief. He startled the congregation in the synagogue at Nazareth with a seeming rebuke that no prophet or servant of God could receive honour among his own people. He then outraged them when he complimented Gentiles (non-Jews) who had shown more faith in God than the "chosen ones" of Israel. These words of rebuke spoken by Jesus were met with indignation and hostility. The Nazarenes forcibly threw him out of their town and would have killed him had he not stopped them. We all stand in need of God's grace and merciful help every day and every moment of our lives. Scripture tells us that "the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning" (Lamentations 3:2223). God gives grace to the humble who seek him with expectant faith and with a repentant heart that wants to be made whole and clean again. If we want to walk in freedom and grow in love and holiness, then we must humbly renounce our sinful ways and submit to Christ's instruction and healing discipline in our lives. Scripture tells us that the Lord disciplines us for our good that we may share his holiness (Hebrews 12:10). Do you want the Lord Jesus to set you free and make you whole again? Ask him to show you the way to walk in his healing love and truth. Yours in Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: He who would valiant be NEH 372
1. He who would valiant be ’gainst all disaster, Let him in constancy follow the Master. There’s no discouragement shall make him once relent His first avowed intent to be a pilgrim. 2. Who so beset him round with dismal stories Do but themselves confound—his strength the more is. No foes shall stay his might; though he with giants fight, He will make good his right to be a pilgrim. 3.
Since, Lord, Thou dost defend us with Thy Spirit, We know we at the end, shall life inherit. Then fancies flee away! I’ll fear not what men say, I’ll labour night and day to be a pilgrim.
Invocation:
Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.
Greeting:
The Lord be with you. And also with you. 4
Sentence: Now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.
The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
5
The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect Righteous God, you confound the world’s wisdom by giving your blessing to the lowly and pure in heart: give us such a hunger and thirst for justice and perseverance in striving for peace, that in our words and deeds the world may see the promise of your kingdom, which has been revealed in Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and for ever. Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19 4 The
LORD said to me, 5 “I chose you before I gave you life, and before you were born I selected you to be a prophet to the nations.” 17 Get
ready, Jeremiah; go and tell them everything I command you to say. Do not be afraid of them now, or I will make you even more afraid when you are with them. 18-19 Listen, Jeremiah! Everyone in this land—the kings of Judah, the officials, the priests, and the people—will be against you. But today I am giving you the strength to resist them; you will be like a fortified city, an iron pillar, and a bronze wall. They will not defeat you, for I will be with you to protect you. I, the LORD, have spoken.” Response:
Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13 31 You should set your hearts on the highest spiritual gifts, but I will show you what is the highest way of all. 13 1-3 If I speak with the eloquence of men and of angels, but have no love, I become no more than blaring brass or crashing cymbal. If I have the gift of foretelling the future and hold in my mind not only all human knowledge but the very secrets of God, and if I also have that absolute faith which can move mountains, but have no love, I amount to nothing at all. If I dispose of all that I possess, yes, even if I give my own body to be burned, but have no love, I achieve precisely nothing. 4 This love of which I speak is slow to lose patience—it looks for a way of being constructive. It is not possessive: it is neither anxious to impress nor does it cherish inflated ideas of its own importance. 5-6 Love has good manners and does not pursue selfish advantage. It is not touchy. It does not keep account of evil or gloat over the wickedness of other people. On the contrary, it is glad with all good men when truth prevails. 7-8a Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope; it can outlast anything. It is, in fact, the one thing that still stands when all else has fallen. 8b-10 For if there are prophecies they will be fulfilled and done with, if there are “tongues” the need for them will disappear, if there is knowledge it will be swallowed up in truth. For our knowledge is always incomplete and our prophecy is always incomplete, and when the complete comes, that is the end of the incomplete. 11 When I was a little child I talked and felt and thought like a little child. Now that I am a man my childish speech and feeling and thought have no further significance for me. 12 At present we are men looking at puzzling reflections in a mirror. The time will come when we shall see reality whole and face to face! At present all I know is a little fraction of the truth, but the time will come when I shall know it as fully as God now knows me! 13 In this life we have three great lasting qualities—faith, hope and love. But the greatest of them is love. Response:
Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 11
Gradual Hymn: Blest are the pure in heart NEH 341
1. Blest are the pure in heart, for they shall see our God; the secret of the Lord is theirs, their soul is Christ’s abode.
3. still to the lowly soul he doth himself impart, and for his dwelling and his throne chooseth the pure in heart.
2. The Lord who left the heavens our life and peace to bring, to dwell in lowliness with men, their pattern and their King:
4. Lord, we thy presence seek; may ours this blessing be; give us a pure and lowly heart, a temple meet for thee. John Keble 1792–1866 (vv. 1,3) and others

The Lord be with you, and also with you. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 4 beginning at the 21st verse.
20-21 Then
he shut the book, handed it back to the attendant and resumed his seat. Every eye in the synagogue was fixed upon him and he began to tell them, “This very day this scripture has been fulfilled, while you were listening to it!” 22 Everybody noticed what he said and was amazed at the beautiful words that came from his lips, and they kept saying, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” 23-27 So he said to them, “I expect you will quote this proverb to me, ‘Cure yourself, doctor!’ Let us see you do in your own country all that we have heard that you did in Capernaum!” Then he added, “I assure you that no prophet is ever welcomed in his own country. I tell you the plain fact that in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were shut up for three and a half years and there was a great famine through the whole country, there were plenty of widows in Israel, but Elijah was not sent to any of them. But he was sent to Sarepta, to a widow in the country of Sidon. In the time of Elisha the prophet, there were a great many lepers in Israel, but not one of them was healed—only Naaman, the Syrian.” 28-30 But when they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was furiously angry. They sprang to their feet and drove him right out of the town, taking him to the brow of the hill on which it was built, intending to hurl him down bodily. But he walked straight through the whole crowd and went on his way. Luke 4:21-30 Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

Offertory Hymn: Hail to the Lord’s anointed NEH 55
1. Hail to the Lord’s anointed, great David’s greater Son; hail, in the time appointed, his reign on earth begun! He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free, and take away transgression, and rule in equity. 2. He comes with succour speedy to those who suffer wrong, to raise the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong, to give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, whose souls condemned and dying were precious in his sight. 3. He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, and love, joy, hope, like flowers, spring in his path to birth; before him on the mountains shall peace the herald go, and righteousness in fountains from hill to valley flow. 16
4. Kings shall fall down before him, and gold and incense bring; all nations shall adore him, his praise all people sing; to him shall prayer unceasing and daily vows ascend; his kingdom still increasing, a kingdom without end. 5. O’er every foe victorious, he on his throne shall rest, from age to age more glorious, all blessing and all-blest. The tide of time shall never his covenant remove; his name shall stand for ever, that name to us is love. James Montgomery 1771–1854

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Holy, Holy, Holy, Schubert. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.
Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

National Trust Appeal - HTK’s National Trust Appeal has been of huge benefit to the Parish, allowing vital maintenance on the Church that we would have otherwise struggled to fund. We are about to commence work on the Vicarage roof, which is leaking, and the total cost of this is around $100,000 so any donations, small or large, towards this would be very gratefully accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Donation forms are in the rack at the back of the church or speak to Brenda in the church office or call Alan Wilson on 0414 470 460.
Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety Holy Trinity Child and Vulnerable Persons Policy.
The Parish Council (upon the recommendations of HTK Child and Vulnerable Person sub-committee) has endorsed the Holy Trinity Child Safe and Vulnerable Persons Policy. Holy Trinity Kew is committed to protecting the safety of young people and vulnerable adults who participate in its programs, ministries and events. This includes the Sunday School and the Choir. On 22 March 2018, the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne approved a Code of Conduct for Child Safety. There are copies of the Holy Trinity Child Safe Policy and the Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety at the back of the church for your attention. Each parishioner is urged to read Child Safe Policy and the Code of Conduct. If you are an adult who has regular contact with children (anyone under the age of 18 years) you will be requested to make a Statement of Commitment for the Code of Conduct for Child Safety. This process has commenced and will continue in the coming weeks. The Parish Council and the Holy Trinity Child Safe Sub Committee thank you for your continued support and co-operation in promoting a Child Safe parish. If you have any queries in relation to these matters please do not hesitate to contact either Rev’d Robert Newton or a member of the Child Safe Sub-Committee.
