Vicar’s letter to the Parish

Dear Parishioners, I write to you at a very important time in the life of Holy Trinity Kew Parish. We have almost completed the construction of our new Parish Centre- the largest construction project since the completion of the main part of our church building in 1863 and one of the largest parish run constructions in the Diocese of Melbourne or in the Anglican Church of Australia. Over the last four years a real impetus and drive has been applied to the project to push it over the line after many years of stalled plans, various lengthy permissions and various ideas and iterations going back to the 1970’s. Many thanks are in order for the many parishioners over the years who have helped progress matters to where we are now.

Finally we have got here and delivered a vision for the 21st Century that will serve our Christian witness to the people of Kew. Our Parish Centre is a unique and particular mix of retail, residential and professional spaces, combined with state of the art facilities for mission activities, parish administration, child care and community involvement. Our architects Atelier Wagner (David and Jacqui Wagner) have listened very carefully to the needs of the parish and come up with a brilliant design close to completion. Alan Wilson our development project leader has been instrumental in being across the whole pre-construction and construction phase whilst also representing the Diocese for its involvement in the residential element.

As we look to the future into 2019 and beyond it is clear to me that such complex development will need some professional management for maximum utility to be achieved and good stewardship to prevail. As your Vicar I can see some important activities flowing from the Parish Centre in terms of Mission activities- the incorporation of our Chinese congregations, provision of some kind of childcare to the Kew community, various bible and spiritual studies and seminars for the whole community as well as the use of facilities for a youth ministry. A place for our congregations and the community to socialise and work- and a whole provision for our pastoral offices of weddings, funeral and baptisms, with beautiful church, stunning gardens and fit for purpose car- parks, kitchen, toilets and halls. Praise be to God for the many blessings he has bestowed upon us!

If you are reading this letter and have not visited Holy Trinity Kew recently I strongly suggest you come along and renew your acquaintance over the Christmas period and come and see. Once we have a practical completion date for works- tours for the Kew community around our site will be arranged in 2019 along with a formal community opening ceremony.

Reflections on Advent and Christmas The Nativity message is the message not only of joy : the GREAT JOY which all the people of the world have always expected without fully realizing what it was. It is the joy of eschatological fulfilment which we seek in the depths of our hearts from the moment that we are beings endowed with conscious life.. Now in the nativity of Christ, the Great Joy is announced in which all the ambiguities are swept aside and all men are confronted with the clear possibility of a decision that will not only help them to put together the pieces of lives wrecked in individual failure but will even make sense out of the lives of all men of all time.

HOLY TRINITY KEW PARISH CENTRE ATELIER WAGNER ARCHITECTS Atelier Wagner was founded by David and Jacqui Wagner in 1998 after working in leading offices in London, Canberra and Melbourne. Their aim was to develop an architectural practice that would critically analyse a client’s programs, reveal site specific opportunities and engage with leading edge technology to create forms and spaces that would inspire activity within and around buildings. The firm has won several awards including the 2011 AIA Heritage Award and the 2012 ATDA Residential Best Renovation award. It is a member of the Australian Institute of Architects and is registered with the Heritage Victoria. Atelier Wagner has been involved in Anglican church projects for more than eighteen years. An interview was conducted with Jacqui and David Wagner on behalf of Trinity Times to learn about their vision for Holy Trinity Parish Centre and how that vision was shaped by the views of the Holy Trinity Property Committee, the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne and the heritage planning constraints on the project. The architects are Anglicans and are personally inspired by the vision and directions for church mission and how that mission is realised in the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne.

The Parish Centre Building project is the first development in the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne to incorporate commercial, parish and residential functions within the same building. It is therefore a pioneering concept in the Diocese if not the Anglican Province of Victoria. The project development took two years including lengthy negotiations with the City of Boroondara.

That preliminary phase involved lengthy negotiations regarding planning, heritage, and construction issues each requiring close attention to detail. Careful consideration was given to the visual impact of the buildings on the church and its associated heritage buildings, the heritage status of the site and the visual impact on the surrounding streetscape. Height limits were imposed to protect the visual impact of the Holy Trinity church tower. Engineering imperatives, waste management, traffic density, parking requirements, and the building’s close proximity to heritage oak trees were taken into consideration. The unusual combination of commercial, ecclesial and Residential requirements contained within one building yet operating independently on each level. All key players were consulted in a process of engagement with all the stake holders in the project.

The imperatives in the design process include design decision making, contract documentation, plans and specifications and detailed interior and exterior design. e.g. cladding and external considered the inter action between the internal and external architecture of the church building itself and its relationship to the new building. e.g. the interior colour scheme of the church including its dark timber features are echoed in the interior colour design of the new building. The exterior surfaces of the parish centre reflect and repeat the visual elements of the church exterior so that there has been a constant visual and physical interaction between the heritage buildings and the modern centre.

Jacqui and David Wagner indicated their architectural focus was the execution of an ecclesial architecture that was directed to a future viable church that enabled the mission of the parish to progress forward yet retain a continuity with its past history. Their vision is that the new centre will contribute to and build the fabric of future mission of Holy Trinity Kew. The centre stands as a witness to its existing buildings to reveal how the parish can continue to contribute to and serve the community of Kew in the future. The architectural intent is to serve the community of Kew, breaking down barriers between the church and the community and proclaiming the new Vision and Directions of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne.

HOLY TRINITY KEW - REFLECTIONS OF THE PARISH CENTRE SITE MANAGER . Mr. FIO BERGAMIN In late September 2018 an interview was conducted between Mr Fio Bergamin, the building site manager of the Parish Centre construction project, and the editor of Trinity Times. This is an account of his professional reflections on the construction of the Parish Centre.

It is a formidable undertaking to assume responsibility for the supervision of a building project that involves complexity. That was the challenge posed by the Holy Trinity Kew Parish Centre construction. Those challenges involved the location where the site abuts a main pedestrian walkway and a major suburban road, the limitations to site access and its position within the residential and retail precinct of a leading Melbourne suburb. Complexity is the word that best sums up the construction challenge presented to the architects, engineers, tradespeople and construction supervisor on the project.

The architectural vision for the Centre aimed to transform an historic church and its site into a unique combination of a sacred space with a modern secular design that would honour both traditions. More than thirty four subcontractors brought a wide range of trade skills to this project. Each tradesman had to be trained to a high Occupational Health and Safety standard and the timing of their construction participation was variable and at times intermittent. The project utilized a multi-cultural workforce from different diverse cultures including Chinese, Afghanis, Croatians, and Italians.

For construction purposes the physical complexity of the site was increased for a number of reasons. Old utility connections did not comply with current standards and required relocation to increased depths. A special design and construction effort was required to preserve the integrity of the two historic oak trees in the church forecourt using specialist arborist advice and a construction redesign of the forecourt surface treatment. Some construction stages could only be commenced after preliminary preparations that were in themselves complex. Before external tiling would be attempted the scaffolding for construction required special attention.

The requirements for a modern construction in close proximity to an historic building are exacting and detailed. A mandatory clear delineation between the historic building and any new construction had to be scrupulously maintained. For example a wall was constructed around the entrance to the church that leads to access to the centre. The building materials include surface treatment (including external tiling and cladding) that visually matches the churches bluestone exterior. The visual integrity of the church architecture had to be maintained whilst creating a modern structure. During a construction period, site supervision and management requires thought and planning for almost twenty four hours a day. There is immense personal satisfaction in seeing a building take form and shape during the exacting construction process.

Editors comment: A site manager must be builder, operations manager, safety officer, human resources supervisor, and the principal coordinator of materials, machinery and tradesmen. Ultimately his skill is in transforming an architectural vision into the reality of a complete building.

Mr Bergamin is the site manager of the Holy Trinity Parish Centre with more than eighteen years experience in major public facility construction. He is a man of faith, a person of sensibility, practical insight and knowledge. He is an indispensable part of a team who transformed the dream of the Holy Trinity Parish Centre into a reality.

Overview of the Parish Centre Development —Alan Wilson In 2007, I was asked by the Revd. Roy Stanley to become involved with the then Wardens, Barbara Thomson, David Harkin and Robert Frood to form a Building Committee, to further develop a Master Plan for the Holy Trinity Kew site, and to consider if a building project could be advanced in some form. I happened to know the CEO of the property investor that had acquired the development done by way of ground lease at St John’s Anglican Church Camberwell. This had been successful for all parties, so the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne was happy to co-operate with Holy Trinity on a similar approach. We developed a couple of concepts that looked as if they could work, but unfortunately the Global Financial Crisis took away the investor’s appetite! The upside was that during the process I formed a good working relationship with the Diocese, and the Diocese also recognised that we needed to put decent facilities into the Parish. We negotiated with the Diocese that if Holy Trinity Kew sold the underutilised car park in Peel St, the parish could keep 90% of the net sale proceeds to fund the development, and the Diocese would take 10% of the sale proceeds.

Normally the split is the other way round. – Remember that the Melbourne Anglican Trust Corporation is the registered propriety of the land, not the Parish. This is the single vital event that broke the cycle of failed attempts to get a project up – we knew HTK had access to funding.

We were within 24 hours of the Peel Street land auction when the Boroondara City Council (BCC) negotiated a three year lease on the car park land with an option to buy. The rent was three times what the parish had previously received from the car park, and it was obviously going to be a long process to get a Planning Permit. This did not cause too much angst. Luckily for us, at the end of the lease period the Council did not exercise its option, so the car park was auctioned and the parish got a substantial premium over the sworn valuation (which would have been the sale price to Council).

During this time the Building Committee in conjunction with the Diocese had selected an architect, Atelier Wagner, and developed a concept for the Parish Centre. The lengthy planning application process continued with BCC. In 2016 the project was put out to tender with a close in February 2017. The chosen builder/site manager was Devco, and construction started in June 2017. The project was scheduled to be finished in late October this year, but due to unforeseen construction delays completion, although delayed is getting closer and closer! The project is currently within budget and all responsible parties are happy with the construction quality being delivered. So there we are – one new Parish Centre.

Hopefully we’ll move the Parish Office into its new space during January, 2019 and all of the Church level facilities will also be fully operational by the end of January 2019. The landscaping will take place as soon as the builders have finished and the new lawns and gardens will be established and looking wonderful in time for Easter.

HOLY TRINITY ANGLICARE GROUP Our Parish supports Anglicare Victoria by donating food for Emergency relief at Mission House in Fitzroy.

We also support the Broadmeadows Women’s Community House which caters for newly arrived migrant women.. This year Anglicare Victoria was included in the top 100 Most Innovative Companies by the Financial Review. When families are in crisis, the Rapid Response program can be the difference between children being removed by the state or staying safely at home. Rapid Response is an Australia –first program which is triggered when child protection workers are set to remove a child. The timeliness and intensity of Rapid Response, which meets families within 24 hours of referral and provides up to 50 hours of hands-on support, makes a real difference for struggling parents. If you have a nine day old baby, your partner is in prison because of the violence he inflicted, you are living in emergency accommodation and you have no family support, where do you turn? The intensity of Rapid Response enables workers to build a strong rapport with families to help them make the changes needed.

A new program being trialled, after success in the United States, is Functional Family Therapy-Child Welfare. Each family is matched with a trained therapist who works with the whole family, in regular sessions for between four and seven months. Where the single parent is suffering from illness, the eldest child typically tries to look after the house and the younger siblings but is usually overwhelmed by the task. The program aims to get families engaged quickly by immediately reducing negativity and blame and replacing it with hope. It also gives them practical skills to communicate and function more safely as a family. There are 80 families in Melbourne’s north and Bendigo currently receiving help with this program. These programs are partially government funded but rely on donations for their full implementation.

HOLY TRINITY KEW– MEMORIES AND A CELEBRATION OF THE PAST I moved to Holy Trinity when the Rev Roy Stanley was the vicar as my previous church had been taken over by the Evangelical branch of the Anglican Communion. The vicar did not appear to regard himself as a shepherd of the people but more as a CEO of a Company. He gave the impression of regarding growing the Church of prime importance and this meant investing in the young as they had a long future in the Church whereas the old had a few years at the most and so were a waste of the limited resources of time and money from the CEO’s point of view. Out went the organ (the young preferred guitars) out went the singing of responses (it put the young off) and in came clapping (the young liked that) and so it went on.

I immediately felt at home in Holy Trinity. Although I cannot sing I like the choir and the music and I was an admirer of the Rev Stanley and found his ideas very compatible with my own. Perhaps that was because we are both engineers by training. I am a believer in tradition and like the vicar to wear vestments and the church to have altar clothes, organ music and choir. I found all these things in Holy Trinity together with a beautiful church with magnificent stain glass windows. I look forward to the new centre (so long in the planning) opening and the extra facilities this will bring to enable the church to better serve the community. As I grow older and see the effects of the decline in religious belief on the behaviour of our leaders in industry and politics I feel it is even more important that we spread the message of Christ and his teaching. Over the years many people either living at home, in supervised houses or institutions have joined us at services and social events at Holy Trinity Kew. Some came with their families some in a bus with their carers or with volunteer drivers. They would come to morning tea, and were always hungry and loved the animal farms at our fete days, and Blessing of the Animals services on the Green.

Patti liked to dance when we sang “Lord of the Dance”. Steward would show us his animal books and Chris told us about Geelong’s fortunes at the footy. At funerals, parishioners joined families and carers remembering friends, and returned for anniversaries. We have always felt that these friends were a delight and an addition to our lives here at Holy Trinity. Hopefully when we are more visible again some will be back.

HOLY TRINITY KEW— A COMMEMORATION OF THE PAST THE HOLY TRINITY KINDERGARTEN - A BUILDING TO BE REMEMBERED! I first came to Holy Trinity (HTK) in 1951 as a boarder at Trinity Grammar - a time when 11am Sunday attendance at HTK was compulsory. From memory there was as yet no building in front of the Jubilee Hall. Messrs Beer, Ball, Dosseter and Blake, under the guidance of the vicar Canon Thornton, ruled the parish!

With the Kew Billiards Club, the Tennis Club, the Mothers’ Union, Women’s Guild and Card group - as well as two youth groups, the scouts and the girl guides, space for the children was very limited indeed, so in the time of our Vicar Joe Sampson a new building was put up for the large Sunday School. As time went by, this became the Holy Trinity kindergarten and later on, a private kindergarten. The enclosed High Street frontage gave space for a good playground with slides, swings etc. To enlarge the area a row of pines along Dawson’s boundary was removed. The building’s next life was as a very successful Op Shop for CMS, our Anglican mission. Then a change in approach saw it finally become our parish meeting room - a use that continued until the current building project commenced. After over 65 years of valuable and varied use, the old hall has gone but hopefully it will not be forgotten! Charles Harkin A VERGER’S TALE FROM THE TOWER This bride was more than fashionably late to her wedding; every guest had arrived and was seated. Invariably when the organ swells and a bride begins her walk down the aisle, guests will appear at the tower door. Now I stood on the church steps with the priest in glorious sunshine looking down the High Street for the bridal cars. No drama yet, brides are not expected to be on time. After a while, the priest wandered inside and rapidly reappeared. They were about to drive to the bride’s city hotel to discuss why she wasn’t coming to be married. On the way to the car the priest asked me to go inside and make the appropriate announcements to the congregation. Hmmmm…and what might they be?

Inside, the organ was playing for an increasingly restless congregation; a very anxious Groom and his supporters were out of sight in the Chapel. I stepped to the lectern, the music subsided, and the congregation was silent. “Ladies and Gentlemen, there is going to be a significant unforeseen delay before we get underway. We suggest you visit our local cafés for an hour or so, when we will be able to advise you further” .Pause, smile. The chatter started as the guests speculated, but it was soon common knowledge that this bride was having very late second thoughts.

Marriage ceremonies no longer have particular surprises for me as I have probably cracked the ton with weddings at which I have verged. I’ve been ‘front of house’ to quite a few priests of this Diocese and beyond, a couple of bishops and the ‘odd’ pastor or two. Kilts, swords, trams and buses, bagpipes, international cricketers and other sporting luminaries have all made an appearance at one time or another. Exotic cars, fake Greek columns, Chinese red envelopes and tea ceremonies have been part of some wedding planners’ grand plans. Beautiful music has been made by soloists, quartets, mini orchestras and our Organist. Occasionally disgruntled or warring relatives have had to be kept under control.

In all the weddings I have verged at over twenty years, it has rained at less than a handful of them. Sunshine and picturesque photographs have been the order of the day and we have never had to cancel a wedding, not even the one with the aforementioned capricious bride. The priest returned, the bride followed after a suitable interval and the wedding, although slightly tense, was completed without incident.

However, for the next three weeks, we did keep an eye on the news to see if a man recently married in Kew, on safari in Africa for his honeymoon, had been mauled to death by a lion. David Harkin

THE PAST AND THE FUTURE - - Confirmation Candidates 2018 Holy Trinity then and now. Irene Shorthouse We came as a family to Holy Trinity Kew in 1988 when we were looking for a new church. We chose it after just one visit when we were made to feel so welcome by the Vicar the (then) Reverend Andrew St John, and by Jack and Margaret Lyons as Welcomers. It was like coming home. We worshipped at the 10 o’clock service for several years.–We belonged to a community. A favourite with our children was the Easter Egg Hunt arranged by the Vicar In the 1990s I joined a group led by the Rev’d Helen Granowski, who was then Assistant Priest at HTK, to undertake the three-year ‘Education for Ministry’ course (referring to lay ministry). From that group came several parishioners who undertook important roles in the parish. My children had grown up and left home and I changed to attending the 8am service where I loved the quiet contemplation and the beauty of the Book of Common Prayer. The congregation at that service was then some 12 to 15 people. We might nod and smile and say, “Good morning,” on arrival or after the service, but that was all the interaction there was in the congregation. Then Carol Fraser and Lowan Attwood made the radical suggestion that we stay on after the service for a cup of tea or coffee. Soon arranged it became very popular. Over time we became a close community, caring for and supporting one another through a black time that followed. When the Rev’d John Jessop joined us as Vicar he said his previous parish had served toast as well as coffee after the eight o’clock service so we took it on and became a breakfast group. We invited those coming later to join us after our service and before theirs, and some did. Over the years the 8am service congregation grew to some 30 to 40 people. The Rev’d John Jessop arranged for Relationships Australia to run weekends at the church preparing couples for marriage. The Mothers’ Union did all the catering and supported the participants. Baptismal families were linked to a sponsor from within the congregation. A Children’s Playgroup was started and very much appreciated by mothers new to the area and their children. This continued for many years until we lost the use of the old Sunday School building. These initiatives were continued under the Rev’d Roy Stanley who introduced an element of fun and started Parish Concerts. He was always finding reasons for people to get together and celebrate as a community. There were many social occasions over the years when the whole parish came together. The long tradition of a fête or Christmas Fair continued. We held lunches to farewell incumbents and locums. A continuing annual event was our Patronal Festival which was usually followed by a meal on the green if the weather was good. We celebrated the start of Lent on Shrove Tuesday with Pancake Night. We catered for funerals and once for a wedding. We prepared goods for the trading table to raise funds, we had basket lunches. There seemed to be so much to celebrate. Time was when I knew by name just about every parishioner at either service. Those I did not see on Sunday I met at the various happenings and celebrations, or cleaning the brass, or getting the church spruced up for the great festivals. There were Working Bees followed by a lunch of barbecued sausages cooked by Charles & Jan Harkin. Sadly, now that arthritis has taken over and I cannot participate in the working bees, there are no opportunities for meeting people other than at Study Groups during Lent and Advent, Over recent years, age diminished the number attending but ‘breakfast’ remained an important time of community that that community has now all but disappeared. I hope there may be a revival with the new building.

On Sunday 11 November 2018 Bishop Genieve Blackwell conducted a confirmation service at Holy Trinity.

On the same day the parish celebrated the confirmation in the new parish centre.

In Memory of Nigel Arthur Holloway Creese AM. 1927—2018 For many years Nigel Creese was a faithful and highly respected member of the Holy Trinity Kew congregation. He was a regular reader of the gospel and psalms at the Sunday 8:00 am service.

Nigel was born in London and won a scholarship to Blundells’s School Tiverton in Devon. At that time he was influenced in his faith by his contact with Bishop Gorton. His father died when Nigel was still in his adolescence. During World War II he joined the Royal Air Force serving in Palestine. He studied at Brasenose College Oxford specialising in Classics and was awarded Blues in rugby, and swimming.

He married his wife Val in July 1951. They celebrated their 67 th anniversary a month before his death. Nigel taught at Rugby school for some years before being appointed headmaster of Christ’s College in Christchurch New Zealand.

As headmaster of Christ’s College he encouraged one particular student to participate in school drama casting the student in T.S. Eliot’s play “Murder in the Cathedral”. That student was Sam Neill who noted Nigel’s mentorship during a recent television program celebrating Sam Neill’s acting career.

In 1970 Nigel was appointed Headmaster at Melbourne Grammar School where he remained until his retirement in 1987. Melbourne Grammar notes that Nigel demonstrated uncommon intelligence, vision and patience. He was noted for his integrity, diplomacy and continued search for excellence. Following on from his retirement, Nigel was the first National Chair of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia.

Nigel was a man of great faith and was a dearly loved and highly respected member of Holy Trinity Kew congregation. As a regular reader at the 8:00 am Sunday service his gospel and psalm readings were always beautifully measured clearly delivered with careful modulation and reverence for each text. He would inspire his listeners to reflect on the Bible readings and the significance of listening to God’s word during the liturgy. His self-effacing dignified presence is missed by his fellow worshippers.

Fr Andrew took us through rehearsals days before so we knew exactly what we were to do and when. The Church was beautifully decorated by the ladies of the Parish – wonderful floral arrangements, Christmas with twinkling lights. Parishioners and visitors filled the Nave of the church as well as the Transepts and the High Altar Sanctuary – up to 350 people all ready to praise God and celebrate the birth of Jesus. When it was time for Holy Communion, the side’s people deflected those communicating to the Altar rail, the Chapel rail or the High Altar rail. It was truly a time of great music, the large male choir directed by John Rivers. Finding these photos has brought back special memories for me.

Changes at Holy Trinity, Kew 2003 – 2014 In my time at Holy Trinity I experienced the changes that are seen in every parish as a normal part of living within a fellowship of faith. Welcoming people into the church through Baptism, sharing in the celebration of marriage and saying good-bye to many wonderful friends, where I was often surprised by wonderful details of their lives that had been unknown before their death.

Significantly, there was also a shift in attitudes in two key areas. Firstly, from seeing children in church as a nuisance and a distraction to worship, through a series of separate family focused services and programs, to where children were welcomed and celebrated at both the 8am and 10am congregations.

Secondly, there appeared to be a reverence and pride in the archaic 19th century conditions in which we worshipped and worked. The church at Holy Trinity is truly superb aesthetically and architecturally, but, it was miserably cold in winter, there were no suitable facilities for fellowship or acceptable amenities, unsuitable areas for offices and the music program, and the faithful saints who regularly cleaned the church or arranged flowers did so in Dickensian conditions. Over the years, people started to see that those conditions presented a problem which made life unreasonably difficult for current parishioners, and hindered the development of outreach programs to invite new people into the parish. It was wonderful to see that improved facilities was not a thing to be resisted, but a new opportunity to be celebrated and welcomed.

The Present at Holy Trinity Kew— A Confirmation Service 11 November 2018 “Christians should be willing to confess their faith publicly (Romans 10: 9-13). Those baptised as infants need to profess for themselves the faith into which they have been baptised. The Anglican tradition provides for confirmation in which a person affirms and renews these promises and receives the strengthening of the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of a bishop’s hand. Candidates for confirmation should have one god parent or sponsor to help them.” A Prayer Book for Australia.(Shorter edition) Mulgrave Victoria: Broughton Publishing.1995. p.94 On Sunday 11 November 2018 a Confirmation service lead by Bishop Genieve Blackwell was held at Holy Trinity Kew when a number of candidates were presented for Confirmation. The service finished at 11:00 am in time to observe one minute of silence remembering those who had died during the War. This marked the 100 anniversary of the end of World War I in 1918.

MUSIC AT HOLY TRINITY Director of Music Stephen Kerr The lead up to Christmas is a busy time for the musicians at Holy Trinity with much preparation going on towards our annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services, and we look forward to again welcoming guest choristers.

2018 has been a great year of singing for the HTK choir, with some challenging repertoire being tackled and a more consistent sound week to week. We have enjoyed the move to exclusively New English Hymnal hymns, which have been written with choral singing in mind.

The Holy Trinity Choir has offered an enriching contribution to weekly Sunday worship this year. The scholarship boys from Trinity Grammar school and our girl choristers are coming into their own, providing a quality choral sound, with maturing voices providing a convincing foundation for congregational and solo singing. The choir has continued to rehearse in the chapel space while the parish centre has been built. We look forward to moving back into the choir vestry soon, where there will be more space for dressing and rehearsing. The new choir robes have given the choir a consistent and high-quality presentation and in their first year have presented no problems, holding up very well to weekly use. We are looking forward to storing them in well-built custom designed cupboards in the choir vestry, ensuring their longevity. Looking forward to the 2018 Carols service and a thrilling 2019 musical year!

A New Work of Art for Holy Trinity. The Icon of Our Lady of Vladimir written by Yvonne Panagacos This is a copy of the miraculous icon, the Theotokos of Vladimir, also known as Our Lady of Vladimir, Vladimir Mother of God, Vladimira by the Greeks, Vladimirskaya by the Russians and lastly, Virgin of Vladimir , so named because in 1169 Andrei Bogolyubsky sacked Kiev, and stole much religious artwork, including a Byzantine "Mother of God" icon which was transferred to Vladimir, a city located on the Klyasma River 200 kilometres east of Moscow.

It is a version of the Eleusa (tenderness/loving-kindness), type of Virgin and Child icon with the Christ child snuggling up to his mother's cheek. Theotokos literally means "Birth-Giver of God", and the Virgin mother is regarded as the holy protectress of Russia. The icon is displayed in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Of all the icons of the Mother of God, this one is arguably the one most frequently copied. It is thought to have been painted in the early part of the 12th century in Constantinople. Only the faces and hands are original, with the clothes repainted after suffering damage when a metal cover was placed over them, and in a fire in 1195.

The icon is said to be miraculous because story after story told of the icon speak of events that cannot be explained except in terms of Divine intervention, starting with the refusal of the horses transporting the icon to move past Vladimir, but focussing largely on the number of times the Russian people have been saved from invading armies by prayers offered to the Virgin before the icon.

In common with all icons of the Theotokos, the icon has three stars on the maphorion, one on the forehead and one on each shoulder, as a statement of belief in Mary’s Perpetual Virginity – a virgin before, during and after the birth of Christ. The face of the Theotokos is sad, since at the Presentation of the Christ Child in the Temple, Simeon had predicted, “And thy own soul a sword shall pierce” (Lk 2:35). It is, at the same time, a reflective face, as Saint Luke also tells us that after the visit of the Magi at Bethlehem, “But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart,” (Lk 2:19), and Simeon’s prophesy immediately prior to that above was “Behold this child is set for the fall and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted.” (Lk 2:34). Mary is named by the contraction of the words Mítir Theoú, (Mother of God), to MR TU, while the Christ Child’s name is similarly contracted from Iisoús Christós to IC XC.

Yvonne Panagacos (a member of the 10:00 am Holy Trinity congregation) is a highly regarded icon writer. In 2017 she undertook to write an icon for Holy Trinity. Our Lady of Vladimir is the glorious result. The work took more than twelve months to complete and was executed according to the ancient technique of icon writing . The same image is featured on the Holy Trinity Mother’ Union banner. The icon will be a central feature of a new sacred space to be created in the transept. Yvonne contributed this article to provide the background to the work.

Holy Trinity is going through a period of immense change to its physical structure and appearance. It is therefore fitting that we should commemorate our past history and the people and events who contributed to the rich legacy of the parish.

The Parish Centre is the first of its kind in the Diocese of Melbourne and we celebrate this new beginning.
