Dear Parishioners, We have no factual records of John's childhood years. We can only suppose that he was raised in the traditions of contemporary Judaism. We do know, however, of Gabriel's directives to Zechariah that the child should never drink wine or strong drink (see Luke 1:15), and this underlines that John was set apart for the Lord. In Jewish practice, a nazirite (like Samson, a liberator of Israel) was a man who vowed to abstain from wine and strong drink â€“ for a period of time, at least â€“ and to leave his hair uncut. It is not known whether John actually was a nazirite, but his consecration to God is clear. The New Testament is succinct in describing the years between John's birth and the beginning of his public ministry: "The child grew up and matured in spirit. He lived in the desert until the day when he made his public appearance in Israel" (Luke 1:80). The desert has much significance throughout the Old and New Testaments. It was a place of meeting with God; the Lord led Moses and the Israelites through the desert and cared for them there and spoke directly to them, revealing himself to them. The desert was also a place of testing and trial, where Jesus encountered temptation and was prepared for ministry (Luke 4:1-13). Like the one he came to proclaim, John spent time in the desert â€“ being formed in communion with God to fulfil his role as the forerunner and herald of the Messiah. The desert calls to mind repentance, austerity, and penance; detachment from the material world and ambitions; prayer and fasting. John's focus was on God alone. As St. Jerome wrote: "John lived in the desert, and his eyes, searching for Christ, refused to see anything but him". In the desert John's ear was attuned to the voice of God, and he was ever alert to the prompting of the Spirit who had told him that one was to follow him, whose sandals John would not be worthy to carry (Matt. 3:11). During this time in the desert John's longing to finally see the one he was to proclaim must had grown in maturity and vitality. He, the friend of the bridegroom (see John 3:29), eagerly awaited the moment when he could cry out, "Behold, the bridegroom comes". Yours in Christ, Fr Robert

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: â€œJesus Christ the Apple Tree,â€?, arr. Bullard. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Trinity Times A Christmas commemorative edition of Trinity Times is available for distribution. Please collect your copy of Trinity Times at the back of the church. Further copies will be made available during Advent. National Trust Appeal - HTKâ€™s National Trust Appeal has been of huge benefit to the Parish, allowing vital maintenance on the Church that we would have otherwise struggled to fund. We are about to commence work on the Vicarage roof, which is leaking, and the total cost of this is around $100,000 so any donations, small or large, towards this would be very gratefully accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Donation forms are in the rack at the back of the church or speak to Brenda in the church office or call Alan Wilson on 0414 470 460.

Church Access: Church: Access is through the Pakington Street entrance. The Chapel door is open for Wednesday services. Church Office: Access is at the northern end of the Church off Pakington Street via a staircase near the Church office. Vicarage & Memorial Garden: Access is either via the staircase near the office and then by following the outside path going around the northern end of the Church, via the carpark if it is open, or through the Chapel door. Please note that there are no railings for either the stairs or ramp outside the Chapel door at this stage, so please take care. Church Carpark: Devco are very kindly allowing the HTK carpark to be used by parishioners on a Sunday for Church services from this Sunday onwards. It will only be open BETWEEN 7.30AM AND 1.00PM however, so if you are intending to be at the Church after that time, please ensure you remove your car from the carpark prior to 1.00pm to avoid being locked in until Monday morning. Please remember that the carpark is still part of the building site and subject to insurance restrictions, and Devco are really doing us a huge favour by allowing us to use the carpark, so please keep a very close eye on all children and be careful yourselves, so this privilege is not jeopardised. If there are any issues whatsoever, the carpark will be closed until the entire development is complete.

Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety Holy Trinity Child and Vulnerable Persons Policy. The Parish Council (upon the recommendations of HTK Child and Vulnerable Person sub-committee) has endorsed the Holy Trinity Child Safe and Vulnerable Persons Policy. Holy Trinity Kew is committed to protecting the safety of young people and vulnerable adults who participate in its programs, ministries and events. This includes the Sunday School and the Choir. On 22 March 2018, the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne approved a Code of Conduct for Child Safety. There are copies of the Holy Trinity Child Safe Policy and the Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety at the back of the church for your attention. Each parishioner is urged to read Child Safe Policy and the Code of Conduct. If you are an adult who has regular contact with children (anyone under the age of 18 years) you will be requested to make a Statement of Commitment for the Code of Conduct for Child Safety. This process has commenced and will continue in the coming weeks.
