Dear Parishioners, On this Feast of All Saints, some thoughts on saints: The Anglican Church commemorates many of the same saints as those in the Roman Catholic Church, mostly on the same days, but also commemorates various notable Christians who have not been canonised by Rome, with a particular, though not exclusive, emphasis on those of English and local origin. There are differences in the calendars of the churches in the Anglican Communion, to reflect local variations. For example, in Australia we commemorate Mother Esther CHN, founder of the Community of the Holy Name in Melbourne in 1931, on the 11th September, and the Martyrs of New Guinea on the 2nd of September. The only person canonised in a conventional sense by the Church of England since the Reformation is St Charles the Martyr (King Charles I). The Anglican Church has no mechanism for canonising saints, and unlike the Roman Catholic Church it makes no claims regarding the heavenly status of those whom it commemorates in its calendar. The ninth Lambeth Conference held in 1958 clarified the commemoration of Saints and Heroes of the Christian Church in the Anglican Communion. Resolution 79 stated: • In the case of scriptural saints, care should be taken to commemorate men or women in terms which are in strict accord with the facts made known in Holy Scripture. • In the case of other names, the Calendar should be limited to those whose historical character and devotion are beyond doubt. • In the choice of new names economy should be observed and controversial names should not be inserted until they can be seen in the perspective of history. • The addition of a new name should normally result from a widespread desire expressed in the region concerned over a reasonable period of time. (1) Holy Days in the Anglican Church are variously categorised as Principal Feasts, Festivals, Lesser Festivals, or Commemorations. In order to minimise problems caused by the ambivalence regarding the manner of commemoration of uncanonised persons, all such days are Lesser Festivals or Commemorations only, whose observance is optional. When the Priest, standing before the Table, hath so ordered the Bread and Wine, that he may with the more readiness and decency break the Bread before the people, and take the Cup into his hands, he shall say the Prayer of Consecration, as followeth. Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.
BAPTISED CHRISTIANS WHO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION IN THEIR OWN CHURCH ARE INVITED TO SHARE COMMUNION WITH US. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind. 14
Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. ANGLICARE - CHRISTMAS TOY & FOOD APPEAL We are now collecting New Toys and Christmas food items for Anglicare who will distribute them during the Christmas season. National Trust Appeal - HTK’s National Trust Appeal has been of huge benefit to the Parish, allowing vital maintenance on the Church that we would have otherwise struggled to fund. We are about to commence work on the Vicarage roof, which is leaking, and the total cost of this is around $100,000 so any donations, small or large, towards this would be very gratefully accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Donation forms are in the rack at the back of the church or speak to Brenda in the church office or call Alan Wilson on 0414 470 460. Church Carpark: Devco are very kindly allowing the HTK carpark to be used by parishioners on a Sunday for Church services from this Sunday onwards. It will only be open BETWEEN 7.30AM AND 1.00PM however, so if you are intending to be at the Church after that time, please ensure you remove your car from the carpark prior to 1.00pm to avoid being locked in until Monday morning. Please remember that the carpark is still part of the building site and subject to insurance restrictions, so Devco are really doing us a huge favour by allowing us to use the carpark, so please keep a very close eye on all children and be careful yourselves, so as not to jeopardise this privilege. If there are any issues whatsoever, the carpark will be closed until the entire development is complete.

GOOD GOVENANCE AND PARISH MANAGEMENT A further training day for all clergy and church leaders of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne is to take place on Saturday 17 November 2018 9:30 am – 1:00 pm at St Michaels Anglican Church North Carlton. The training program is entitled Church Law - Good Governance and Management of Your Parish. Speakers will be Bishop Bradley Billings and Mr Ken Spackman ( Registrar of the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne) The conduct of Anglican parishes has become more complex and anyone interested in proper parish governance is urged to attend. NOTICE OF ANNUAL PARISH MEETING- SUNDAY 25TH NOVEMBER FOLLOWING THE 10AM SERVICE IN THE CHURCH. (11.30am). All written reports to the Parish office by Tuesday 30th October. The Electoral Roll Committee of the Parish will revise the electoral roll by Saturday the 10th of November and display it on Sunday the 11th November in the Church. Please note the new eligibility rules since 2013 on membership of the electoral roll below (excerpt from the Parish Governance Act 2013): A person is not entitled to be upon the roll of more than one parish or Authorised Anglican Congregation, or upon the roll of a parish and an Authorised Anglican Congregation. (3) The parish electoral roll is to contain the names and postal addresses of lay persons who are of at least eighteen years of age and who— (a) are baptised; (b) regularly and habitually attend public worship at a worship centre in the parish; (c) have signed an application seeking to be included on the roll and declaring that— (i) they are a member of the Anglican Church of Australia or of a church in communion with the Anglican Church of Australia; (ii) they are not a member of any church which is not in communion with the Anglican Church of Australia; and (iii) they are not on the parish electoral roll of any other parish or any Authorised Anglican Congregation in the Diocese other than a roll from which they wish their name to be removed. (4) Without limiting other grounds on which a person may be taken to have regularly and habitually attended public worship in a worship centre in a parish, for the purposes of this section a person who has attended public worship at a worship centre 12 times in the preceding 12 months and three times in the preceding three months is considered to have regularly and habitually attended public worship at that worship centre.

There is a call for nominations for— (a) 2 churchwardens; (b) 6 elected members of the parish council; and (c) 2 members of the incumbency committee. Nominations must be in writing and signed by— (a) the person nominated; (b) the proposer; and (c) the seconder, each of whom must be a parishioner and not a disqualified person. If the person nominated is unable to sign the nomination, there may be a statement signed by the proposer and seconder to the effect that the person nominated has consented to the nomination. Where there is no nomination for a position (including where the number of vacancies exceeds the number of nominations) there is a casual vacancy in that position. Nomination forms to be given to the Vicar by Tuesday the 20th November. The Vicar
Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety Holy Trinity Child and Vulnerable Persons Policy. The Parish Council (upon the recommendations of HTK Child and Vulnerable Person sub-committee) has endorsed the Holy Trinity Child Safe and Vulnerable Persons Policy. Holy Trinity Kew is committed to protecting the safety of young people and vulnerable adults who participate in its programs, ministries and events. This includes the Sunday School and the Choir. On 22 March 2018, the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne approved a Code of Conduct for Child Safety. There are copies of the Holy Trinity Child Safe Policy and the Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety at the back of the church for your attention. Each parishioner is urged to read Child Safe Policy and the Code of Conduct. If you are an adult who has regular contact with children (anyone under the age of 18 years) you will be requested to make a Statement of Commitment for the Code of Conduct for Child Safety. This process has commenced and will continue in the coming weeks.
