Dear Parishioners, On this Feast of All Saints, some thoughts on saints: The Anglican Church commemorates many of the same saints as those in the Roman Catholic Church, mostly on the same days, but also commemorates various notable Christians who have not been canonised by Rome, with a particular, though not exclusive, emphasis on those of English and local origin. There are differences in the calendars of the churches in the Anglican Communion, to reflect local variations. For example, in Australia we commemorate Mother Esther CHN, founder of the Community of the Holy Name in Melbourne in 1931, on the 11th September, and the Martyrs of New Guinea on the 2nd of September. The only person canonised in a conventional sense by the Church of England since the Reformation is St Charles the Martyr (King Charles I). The Anglican Church has no mechanism for canonising saints, and unlike the Roman Catholic Church it makes no claims regarding the heavenly status of those whom it commemorates in its calendar. The ninth Lambeth Conference held in 1958 clarified the commemoration of Saints and Heroes of the Christian Church in the Anglican Communion. Resolution 79 stated: • In the case of scriptural saints, care should be taken to commemorate men or women in terms which are in strict accord with the facts made known in Holy Scripture. • In the case of other names, the Calendar should be limited to those whose historical character and devotion are beyond doubt. • In the choice of new names economy should be observed and controversial names should not be inserted until they can be seen in the perspective of history. • The addition of a new name should normally result from a widespread desire expressed in the region concerned over a reasonable period of time. (1) Holy Days in the Anglican Church are variously categorised as Principal Feasts, Festivals, Lesser Festivals, or Commemorations. In order to minimise problems caused by the ambivalence regarding the manner of commemoration of uncanonised persons, all such days are Lesser Festivals or Commemorations only, whose observance is optional. A Hymn: Jesu, lover of my soul NEH 383

1. Jesu, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high; hide me, O my Saviour, hide, till the storm of life is past; safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last.

3. Thou, O Christ, art all I want, more than all in thee I find, raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name, I am all unrighteousness; false and full of sin I am, thou art full of truth and grace.

2. Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on thee; leave, ah! leave me not alone, still support and comfort me: all my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring; cover my defenceless head with the shadow of thy wing.

4. Plenteous grace with thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; let the healing streams abound, make and keep me pure within: thou of life the fountain art, freely let me take of thee, spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity. Charles Wesley 1707–88

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you. 4

Sentence: And a great multitude, from every nation and tribe and people and language, cried with a loud voice, saying, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!’ The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

5

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Kyrie eleison

The Collect Eternal God, neither death nor life can separate us from your love: grant that we may serve you faithfully here on earth, and in heaven rejoice with all your saints who ceaselessly proclaim your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Revelation 7:2-14 2 And

I saw another angel coming up from the east with the seal of the living God. He called out in a loud voice to the four angels to whom God had given the power to damage the earth and the sea. 3 The angel said, “Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees, until we mark the servants of our God with a seal on their foreheads.” 4 And I was told that the number of those who were marked with God's seal on their foreheads was 144,000. They were from the twelve tribes of Israel, 5-8 twelve thousand from each tribe: Judah, Reuben, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin. 9 After this I looked, and there was an enormous crowd—no one could count all the people! They were from every race, tribe, nation, and language, and they stood in front of the throne and of the Lamb, dressed in white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. 10 They called out in a loud voice: “Salvation comes from our God, who sits on the throne, and from the Lamb!” 11 All the angels stood around the throne, the elders, and the four living creatures. Then they threw themselves face downward in front of the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen! Praise, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honor, power, and might belong to our God forever and ever! Amen!” 13 One of the elders asked me, “Who are these people dressed in white robes, and where do they come from?” 14 “I don't know, sir. You do,” I answered. 8

He said to me, “These are the people who have come safely through the terrible persecution. They have washed their robes and made them white with the blood of the Lamb. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Psalm: 24:1-6

The earth is the Lord’s and | all· that is | in it: the compass of the | world and | those who | dwell therein. 2 For he has founded it up|on the | seas: and es|tablished it· up|on the | waters. 1

Who shall ascend the | hill· of the | Lord: or who shall | stand· in his | holy | place? 4 Those who have clean hands and a | pure | heart: who have not set their soul upon idols, nor | sworn their | oath· to a | lie. 3

They shall receive | blessing· from the | Lord: and recompense from the | God of | their sal|vation. 6 Of such a kind as this are | those who | seek him: those who seek your | face O | God of | Jacob. 5

Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men. 9

Second Reading: 1 John 3:1-3 3 Consider the incredible love that the Father has shown us in allowing us to be called “children of God”—and that is not just what we are called, but what we are. Our heredity on the Godward side is no mere figure of speech—which explains why the world will no more recognise us than it recognised Christ. 2 Oh, dear children of mine (forgive the affection of an old man!), have you realised it? Here and now we are God’s children. We don’t know what we shall become in the future. We only know that, if reality were to break through, we should reflect his likeness, for we should see him as he really is! 3 Everyone who has at heart a hope like that keeps himself pure, for he knows how pure Christ is. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: Through all the changing scenes of life NEH 467

1. Through all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy, the praises of my God shall still my heart and tongue employ.

4. O make but trial of his love; experience will decide how blest are they, and only they, who in his truth confide.

2. O magnify the Lord with me, with me exalt his name; when in distress to him I called he to my rescue came.

5. Fear him, ye saints, and you will then have nothing else to fear; make you his service your delight, your wants shall be his care.

3. The hosts of God encamp around the dwellings of the just; deliverance he affords to all who on his succour trust.

6. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, The God whom we adore, Be glory, as it was, is now, And shall be evermore. Nahum Tate 1652–1715 and Nicholas Brady 1659–1726

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA – Sung by ALL

The Lord be with you And also with you. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 5 beginning at the 1st verse.

5 When Jesus saw the vast crowds he went up the hill-side and after he had sat down his disciples came to him. 2-12 Then he began his teaching by saying to them, “How happy are the humble-minded, for the kingdom of Heaven is theirs! “How happy are those who know what sorrow means for they will be given courage and comfort! “Happy are those who claim nothing, for the whole earth will belong to them! “Happy are those who are hungry and thirsty for goodness, for they will be fully satisfied! “Happy are the merciful, for they will have mercy shown to them! “Happy are the utterly sincere, for they will see God! “Happy are those who make peace, for they will be sons of God! “Happy are those who have suffered persecution for the cause of goodness, for the kingdom of Heaven is theirs! “And what happiness will be yours when people blame you and ill-treat you and say all kinds of slanderous things against you for my sake! Be glad then, yes, be tremendously glad—for your reward in Heaven is magnificent. They persecuted the prophets before your time in exactly the same way. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “The eternal gifts of Christ the King, Guidetti arr. Ley. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

Final Hymn: Jerusalem the golden NEH 381

1. Jerusalem the golden, with milk and honey blest, beneath thy contemplation sink heart and voice oppressed: I know not, oh, I know not, what social joys are there; what radiancy of glory, what light beyond compare!

3. There is the throne of David; and there, from care released, the song of them that triumph, the shout of them that feast; and they who, with their Leader have conquered in the fight, for ever and for ever are clad in robes of white.

2. They stand, those halls of Sion, Conjubilant with song, and bright with many an angel, and all the martyr throng: the Prince is ever in them, the daylight is serene; the pastures of the blessèd are decked in glorious sheen.

4. Oh, sweet and blessèd country, Shall I ever see thy face? Oh, sweet and blessèd country, Shall I ever win thy grace? Exult, O dust and ashes! The Lord shall be thy part: His only, his for ever, Thou shalt be, and thou art!. Words: Bernard of Cluny, 1145; trans. John Mason Neale, 1851, 1859 Music: Ewing

It will only be open BETWEEN 7.30AM AND 1.00PM however, so if you are intending to be at the Church after that time, please ensure you remove your car from the carpark prior to 1.00pm to avoid being locked in until Monday morning. Please remember that the carpark is still part of the building site and subject to insurance restrictions, so Devco are really doing us a huge favour by allowing us to use the carpark, so please keep a very close eye on all children and be careful yourselves, so as not to jeopardise this privilege. If there are any issues whatsoever, the carpark will be closed until the entire development is complete.
