Dear Parishioners, October 28th is the feast of Saint Simon the Zealot and Saint Jude Thaddeus, two of the twelve Apostles named by Jesus. They share a common feast day because, according to later tradition, they ministered in Persia and there, martyred on the same day in c. 65 AD. In Matthew and Mark, Simon is referred to as the Cananean. Luke calls him the Zealot, perhaps due to his zeal in upholding the Law, or perhaps he was a member of the radical Jewish sect so named. This designation helped to distinguish him from fellow Apostle, Simon Peter. After Christs’ Ascension and the Council of Jerusalem, Simon preached the Gospel in Egypt, Carthage, Spain and possibly Britain, before going to Jerusalem. There, he joined Jude on missionary journeys to Syria, Mesopotamia and Persia. Tradition claims that he was sawed in half and devoured by lions. Simon is most often depicted in art with a saw, the instrument of his martyrdom. Saint Jude or Judas, also called Thaddeus or Lebbeus, wrote the New Testament Epistle that bears his name. Scripture identifies him as “the brother of James,” and it is generally believed that this is Saint James the Less. It is probable that Jude was a childhood companion of Jesus as it is widely held that Jude was the nephew of the Mother of our Lord and a cousin of Christ. In the Gospel of John, at the Last Supper, Jude asks Jesus why he does not manifest himself to the whole world. Jesus replies: [to Jude and to us) “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me.” (Jn 14:23-27) St. Jude, together with St. Simon, is credited with converting the Persian King Varardach and his court to the faith. Several accounts contend that Jude was crucified as an example to perspective converts, but most hold to the tradition that he was beaten and beheaded. He is frequently depicted holding the face of Christ and a club, the means of his martyrdom. In some depictions, a flame extends from his forehead, symbolising the power and action of the Holy Spirit. Yours In Christ, Fr Robert 3
Hymn: All people that on earth do dwell NEH 334
1. All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice: him serve with fear, his praise forth tell; come ye before him and rejoice. 2. The Lord, ye know, is God indeed; without our aid he did us make: we are his folk, he doth us feed, and for his sheep he doth us take. 3. O enter then his gates with praise, approach with joy his courts unto; praise, laud and bless his name always, for it is seemly so to do. 4. For why? the Lord our God is good; his mercy is for ever sure; his truth at all times firmly stood, and shall from age to age endure. 5. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, The God whom heaven and earth adore, From men and from the Angel-host Be praise and glory evermore. William Kethe d.1594
Invocation:
Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. 4
Greeting:
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Sentence: The redeemed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads. The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5
The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect Almighty God, you have built your Church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ himself as the chief cornerstone: we thank you for the apostles Simon and Jude, and we pray that we may reveal your love and mercy, and being joined in unity of spirit may grow into a holy temple, acceptable to you; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Jeremiah 31:7-9 For thus says the LORD: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, ‘Save, O LORD, your people, the remnant of Israel.’ 8 See, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, those with child and those in labour, together; a great company, they shall return here. 9 With weeping they shall come, and with consolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn. Response:
Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 8
Psalm: 126

Second Reading: Hebrews 5:1-6 5 Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; 3 and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. 4 And one does not presume to take this honour, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’; 6 as he says also in another place, ‘You are a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchizedek.’ Response:
Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: Jesu, the very thought of thee NEH 385
1. Jesu, the very thought of thee with sweetness fills my breast; but sweeter far thy face to see, and in thy presence rest.
4. But what to those who find? Ah, this nor tongue nor pen can show; the love of Jesus, what it is, none but his loved ones know.
2. Nor voice can sing, nor heart can frame, nor can the memory find, a sweeter sound than thy blest Name, O Saviour of mankind!
5. Jesu, our only joy be thou, as thou our prize wilt be; Jesus, be thou our glory now, and through eternity.
3. O hope of every contrite heart, O joy of all the meek, to those who fall, how kind thou art: how good to those who seek!

The Lord be with you, and also with you. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 10 beginning at the 46th verse.
They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 Jesus stood still and said, “Call him here.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, “Take heart; get up, he is calling you.” 50 So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 Then Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “My teacher, let me see again.” 52 Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has made you well.” Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. Mark 10:46-52 46
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “The true and Living Bread, David Blackwell. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.
Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

Final Hymn: Through the night of doubt and sorrow NEH 468
1 Through the night of doubt and sorrow onward goes the pilgrim band, singing songs of expectation, marching to the promised land.
4 One the object of our journey, one the faith which never tires, one the earnest looking forward, one the hope our God inspires:
2 Clear before us through the darkness gleams and burns the guiding light; brother clasps the hand of brother, stepping fearless through the night.
5 One the strain that lips of thousands lift as from the heart of one; one the conflict, one the peril, one the march in God begun: 6 One the gladness of rejoicing on the far eternal shore, where the one almighty Father reigns in love for evermore.
3 One the light of God's own presence o'er his ransomed people shed, chasing far the gloom and terror, brightening all the path we tread:

ANGLICARE - CHRISTMAS TOY & FOOD APPEAL We are now collecting New Toys and Christmas food items for Anglicare who will distribute them during the Christmas season. We ask that you please place the gift in the basket provided and that it not be gift wrapped. Thank you. National Trust Appeal - HTK’s National Trust Appeal has been of huge benefit to the Parish, allowing vital maintenance on the Church that we would have otherwise struggled to fund. We are about to commence work on the Vicarage roof, which is leaking, and the total cost of this is around $100,000 so any donations, small or large, towards this would be very gratefully accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Donation forms are in the rack at the back of the church or speak to Brenda in the church office or call Alan Wilson on 0414 470 460. Church Carpark: Devco are very kindly allowing the HTK carpark to be used by parishioners on a Sunday for Church services from this Sunday onwards. It will only be open BETWEEN 7.30AM AND 1.00PM however, so if you are intending to be at the Church after that time, please ensure you remove your car from the carpark prior to 1.00pm to avoid being locked in until Monday morning. Please remember that the carpark is still part of the building site and subject to insurance restrictions, so Devco are really doing us a huge favour by allowing us to use the carpark, so please keep a very close eye on all children and be careful yourselves, so as not to jeopardise this privilege. If there are any issues whatsoever, the carpark will be closed until the entire development is complete.
