In the Eucharistic liturgy that we use each Sunday, from the Prayer Book for Australia, there are multiple occasions when the phrase “Silence may be kept” occurs. Indeed it may come as somewhat of a surprise to discover that it is used on seven separate occasions. Dietrich Bonhoeffer has this to say about silence in an extract titled Time for Silence from his book, Life Together, 84-85 Just as there are certain times in a Christian’s day for speaking the Word, particularly the time of daily worship and prayer together, so the day also needs certain times of silence under the Word and silence that comes out of the Word. These will mainly be the times before and after hearing the Word. The Word comes not to the noisemakers but to those who are silent. The stillness of the temple is the sign of God’s holy presence in the Word. There is an indifferent or even negative attitude toward silence which sees in it a disparagement of God’s revelation in the Word. Silence is misunderstood as a solemn gesture, as a mystical desire to get beyond the Word. Silence is no longer seen in its essential relationship to the Word, as the simple act of the individual who falls silent under the Word of God. We are silent before hearing the Word because our thoughts are already focused on the Word, as children are quiet when they enter their father’s room. We are silent after hearing the Word because the Word is still speaking and living and swelling within us. We are silent early in the morning because God should have the first word, and we are silent before going to bed because the last word also belongs to God. We remain silent solely for the sake of the Word, not thereby to dishonour the Word but rather to honour and receive it properly. In our busy world it seems that many people feel the need to fill up any occasions of potential silence with sounds, whether of music or podcasts or other recordings. The number of travellers, whether in cars or on public transport, or pedestrians that I see wearing earphones or earbuds is staggering. Bonhoeffer encourages us as Christians to embrace silence, in a positive manner, to allow God space to speak to us. Perhaps we also need to allow more time when we are worshiping for there to be silence, otherwise we may as well be wearing earphones or earbuds like the travellers and the pedestrians instanced above. Second Reading: Hebrews 2:1-10 2 Therefore we must pay greater attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. 2 For if the message declared through angels was valid, and every transgression or disobedience received a just penalty, 3 how can we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? It was declared at first through the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him, 4 while God added his testimony by signs and wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, distributed according to his will. 5 Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. 6 But someone has testified somewhere, ‘What are human beings that you are mindful of them, or mortals, that you care for them? 7 You have made them for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned them with glory and honour, 8 subjecting all things under their feet.’ Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. When the Priest, standing before the Table, hath so ordered the Bread and Wine, that he may with the more readiness and decency break the Bread before the people, and take the Cup into his hands, he shall say the Prayer of Consecration, as followeth. Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.
BAPTISED CHRISTIANS WHO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION IN THEIR OWN CHURCH ARE INVITED TO SHARE COMMUNION WITH US.
The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind. 13
Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Father Robert and Jane will be away from the parish from the 17th of September until the 8th October inclusive. During this time they will travelling to meet up with family in Italy to celebrate their Silver Wedding Anniversary. We wish them well for their trip and congratulate them on 25 years of Christian faithful marriage. Fr Robert Holland will be the locum during the Vicar’s absence. Garden Working Bee: Come along on Saturday 13th October at any time between 9.00am – 12.00pm to help tidy up some of the garden. Calendar Fundraiser: The 2019 Australian Anglican Church Calendar is now available and can be purchased through us for $15. An example is on the table at the back of the Church so please have a look and if you would like a calendar for yourself or family/friends, please write your name on the list with the number required, put your money in an envelope with your name on it and place it in the box provided. Calendars will be ordered mid-October and will arrive early November. National Trust Appeal - HTK’s National Trust Appeal has been of huge benefit to the Parish, allowing vital maintenance on the Church that we would have otherwise struggled to fund. We are about to commence work on the Vicarage roof, which is leaking, and the total cost of this is around $100,000 so any donations, small or large, towards this would be very gratefully accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Donation forms are in the rack at the back of the church or speak to Brenda in the church office or call Alan Wilson on 0414 470 460. 16
ANGLICARE - CHRISTMAS TOY & FOOD APPEAL We are now collecting New Toys and Christmas food items for Anglicare who will distribute them during the Christmas season. We ask that you place gifts in the bin provided and that it not be gift wrapped. They are also selling Christmas Cards and brochures are available at the back of the church with more information. Report from the Holy Trinity Kew Anglicare Group (officially Holy Trinity Kew Anglicare Victoria Partnership Group) from our meeting on Tuesday 11 September in the Vicarage Broadmeadows Women’s Community House Project. The Vicar spoke of the many supporters of Anglicare within the congregation who are unable to attend daytime, midweek meetings but still wish to be informed and involved. So we hope this report brings you up to date and keeps you in touch. The group heard over a phone link from Helen Slonek at the Broadmeadows Women’s Community House who reported on the opportunities available to immigrant women at the Centre. One very important one is English Language classes which aid integration and help reduce an immigrant’s isolation within the community. Whilst Government funding is available for the lessons, none is available for childcare for Term 4 – necessary if you have small children. The cost of childcare for the group is a staggering $2000 per term. We as a group felt that contributing our funds to childcare, thus allowing more women to attend classes would have a very good outcome. Helen said that being able to report to Government that they had funding for childcare from an outside group would also help their application for more class funding. Please help this worthwhile cause by supporting the Retiring Collection or at any other time with an envelope marked ‘Anglicare Broadmeadows Women’s Communiy House’ in the Sunday collection. Update on Access 30/9/2018: Church: Access is through the Pakington Street entrance. The Chapel door is open for Wednesday services. Church Office: Access is at the northern end of the Church off Pakington Street via a staircase near the Church office. Vicarage & Memorial Garden: Access is either via the staircase near the office and then by following the outside path going around the northern end of the Church, or through the Chapel door. Please note that there are no railings for either the stairs or ramp outside the Chapel door at this stage, so please take care. Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety Holy Trinity Child and Vulnerable Persons Policy. The Parish Council (upon the recommendations of HTK Child and Vulnerable Person sub-committee) has endorsed the Holy Trinity Child Safe and Vulnerable Persons Policy. Holy Trinity Kew is committed to protecting the safety of young people and vulnerable adults who participate in its programs, ministries and events. This includes the Sunday School and the Choir. On 22 March 2018, the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne approved a Code of Conduct for Child Safety. There are copies of the Holy Trinity Child Safe Policy and the Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety at the back of the church for your attention. Each parishioner is urged to read Child Safe Policy and the Code of Conduct. If you are an adult who has regular contact with children (anyone under the age of 18 years) you will be requested to make a Statement of Commitment for the Code of Conduct for Child Safety. This process has commenced and will continue in the coming weeks.
