In the Eucharistic liturgy that we use each Sunday, from the Prayer Book for Australia, there are multiple occasions when the phrase “Silence may be kept” occurs. Indeed it may come as somewhat of a surprise to discover that it is used on seven separate occasions. Dietrich Bonhoeffer has this to say about silence in an extract titled Time for Silence from his book, Life Together, 84-85 Just as there are certain times in a Christian’s day for speaking the Word, particularly the time of daily worship and prayer together, so the day also needs certain times of silence under the Word and silence that comes out of the Word. These will mainly be the times before and after hearing the Word. The Word comes not to the noisemakers but to those who are silent. The stillness of the temple is the sign of God’s holy presence in the Word. There is an indifferent or even negative attitude toward silence which sees in it a disparagement of God’s revelation in the Word. Silence is misunderstood as a solemn gesture, as a mystical desire to get beyond the Word. Silence is no longer seen in its essential relationship to the Word, as the simple act of the individual who falls silent under the Word of God. We are silent before hearing the Word because our thoughts are already focused on the Word, as children are quiet when they enter their father’s room. We are silent after hearing the Word because the Word is still speaking and living and swelling within us. We are silent early in the morning because God should have the first word, and we are silent before going to bed because the last word also belongs to God. We remain silent solely for the sake of the Word, not thereby to dishonour the Word but rather to honour and receive it properly. In our busy world it seems that many people feel the need to fill up any occasions of potential silence with sounds, whether of music or podcasts or other recordings. The number of travellers, whether in cars or on public transport, or pedestrians that I see wearing earphones or earbuds is staggering. Bonhoeffer encourages us as Christians to embrace silence, in a positive manner, to allow God space to speak to us. Perhaps we also need to allow more time when we are worshiping for there to be silence, otherwise we may as well be wearing earphones or earbuds like the travellers and the pedestrians instanced above. Robert Holland - Locum 3

A Hymn: Christ whose glory fills the skies NEH 234

1. Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ the true, the only light, sun of righteousness, arise, triumph o’er the shades of night; dayspring from on high, be near; day-star, in my heart appear. 2. Dark and cheerless is the morn unaccompanied by thee; joyless is the day’s return, till thy mercy’s beams I see, till they inward light impart, glad my eyes, and warm my heart. 3. Visit then this soul of mine; pierce the gloom of sin and grief; fill me, radiancy divine; scatter all my unbelief; more and more thyself display, shining to the perfect day. Charles Wesley 1707–88

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. 4

And also with you.

5

Sentence: Whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it. The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

6

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Kyrie eleison

(Dudman)

The Collect Loving God, you have made us in your own image, creating us male and female, and you have consecrated the covenant of marriage so that in it is signified the spiritual marriage between Christ and his Church: pour your grace upon all who are called to this holy state, that, keeping their promise of faithfulness to each other, they may reflect in their lives your love for us all; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Genesis 2:18-24 18 Then

the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to live alone. I will make a suitable companion to help him.” 19 So he took some soil from the ground and formed all the animals and all the birds. Then he brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and that is how they all got their names. 20 So the man named all the birds and all the animals; but not one of them was a suitable companion to help him. 21 Then the LORD God made the man fall into a deep sleep, and while he was sleeping, he took out one of the man's ribs and closed up the flesh. 22 He formed a woman out of the rib and brought her to him. 23 Then the man said, “At last, here is one of my own kind— Bone taken from my bone, and flesh from my flesh. ‘Woman’ is her name because she was taken out of man.”[a] 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Second Reading: Hebrews 2:1-10 2 1-4 We ought, therefore, to pay the greatest attention to the truth that we have heard and not allow ourselves to drift away from it. For if the message given through angels proved authentic, so that defiance of it and disobedience to it received appropriate retribution, how shall we escape if we refuse to pay proper attention to the salvation that is offered us today? For this salvation came first through the words of the Lord himself: it was confirmed for our hearing by men who had heard him speak, and God moreover has plainly endorsed their witness by signs and miracles, by all kinds of spiritual power, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, all working to the divine plan. 5 For though in past ages God did grant authority to angels, yet he did not put the future world of men under their control, and it is this world that we are now talking about. 6-7 But someone has said: ‘What is man that you are mindful of him, or the son of man that you take care of him? You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honour, and set him over the works of your hands. You have put all things in subjection under his feet’. 8 Notice that the writer puts “all things” under the sovereignty of man: he left nothing outside his control. But we do not yet see “all things” under his control. 9-12 What we actually see is Jesus, after being made temporarily inferior to the angels (and so subject to pain and death), in order that he should, in God’s grace, taste death for every man, now crowned with glory and honour. It was right and proper that in bringing many sons to glory, God (from whom and by whom everything exists) should make the leader of their salvation a perfect leader through the fact that he suffered. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: God is love, let heav’n adore him NEH 364 (Hyfrydol)

1. God is love, let heav’n adore him; God is love, let earth rejoice; let creation sing before him, and exalt him with one voice. He, who laid the earth’s foundation, he who spread the heavens above, he who breathes through all creation, He is love, eternal Love. 2. God is love, and he enfoldeth all the world in one embrace, with unfailing grasp he holdeth every child of every race. And when human hearts are breaking under sorrow’s iron rod, then they find that selfsame aching deep within the heart of God.

12

3. God is love, and, though with blindness sin afflicts the souls of men, God’s eternal loving-kindness holds and guides them even then. Sin and death and hell shall never o’er us final triumph gain; God is love, so love for ever o’er the universe must reign. Timothy Rees 1874–1939

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA – Sung by ALL

The Lord be with you And also with you.

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 10 beginning at the 2nd verse.

10 1-2 Then he got up and left Galilee and went off to the borders of Judea and beyond the Jordan. Again great crowds assembled to meet him, and again, according to his custom, he taught them. Then some Pharisees arrived to ask him this test-question. “Is it right for a man to divorce his wife?” 3 Jesus replied by asking them, “What has Moses commanded you to do?” 4 “Moses allows men to write a divorce-notice and then to dismiss her,” they said. 5-9 “Moses gave you that commandment,” returned Jesus, “because you know so little of the meaning of love. But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female’. ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’. So that in body they are no longer two people but one. That is why man must never separate what God has joined together.” 10 On reaching the house, his disciples questioned him again about this matter. 11-12 “Any man who divorces his wife and marries another woman,” he told them, “commits adultery against his wife. And if she herself divorces her husband and marries someone else, she commits adultery.” 13

13-16 Then

some people came to him bringing little children for him to touch. The disciples tried to discourage them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant and told them, “You must let little children come to me— never stop them! For the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Indeed, I assure you that the man who does not accept the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. Then he took the children in his arms and laid his hands on them and blessed them. Mark 10:2-16 Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

Offertory Hymn: Jesus shall reign where’er the sun NEH 388

1 Jesus shall reign where'er the sun does his successive journeys run; his kingdom stretch from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and wane no more.

3 Blessings abound where'er he reigns: the prisoner leaps to lose his chains: the weary find eternal rest: and all the sons of want are blest. 4 Let every creature rise and bring peculiar honours to our King, angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the long Amen.

2 People and realms of every tongue dwell on his love with sweetest song; and infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on his name.

Isaac Watts 1674-1748 based on Psalm 72(71)

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Holy, Holy, Holy, Schubert. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

Final Hymn: Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands NEH 306

1 Strengthen for service, Lord, the hands That holy things have taken; Let ears that now have heard thy songs To clamour never waken. 2 Lord, may the tongues which 'Holy' sang Keep free from all deceiving; The eyes which saw thy love be bright, Thy blessèd hope perceiving. 3 The feet that tread thy holy courts From light do thou not banish; The bodies by thy Body fed With thy new life replenish.

23

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE Post-Communion Prayer Prayer of self-offering Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

Calendars will be ordered mid-October and will arrive early November. National Trust Appeal - HTK’s National Trust Appeal has been of huge benefit to the Parish, allowing vital maintenance on the Church that we would have otherwise struggled to fund. We are about to commence work on the Vicarage roof, which is leaking, and the total cost of this is around $100,000 so any donations, small or large, towards this would be very gratefully accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Donation forms are in the rack at the back of the church or speak to Brenda in the church office or call Alan Wilson on 0414 470 460.

ANGLICARE - CHRISTMAS TOY & FOOD APPEAL We are now collecting New Toys and Christmas food items for Anglicare who will distribute them during the Christmas season. We ask that you place the gift in the bin provided and that it not be gift wrapped. They are also selling Christmas Cards and brochures are available at the back of the church with more information. Report from the Holy Trinity Kew Anglicare Group (officially Holy Trinity Kew Anglicare Victoria Partnership Group) from our meeting on Tuesday 11 September in the Vicarage Broadmeadows Women’s Community House Project. The Vicar spoke of the many supporters of Anglicare within the congregation who are unable to attend daytime, midweek meetings but still wish to be informed and involved. So we hope this report brings you up to date and keeps you in touch. The group heard over a phone link from Helen Slonek at the Broadmeadows Women’s Community House who reported on the opportunities available to immigrant women at the Centre. One very important one is English Language classes which aid integration and help reduce an immigrant’s isolation within the community. Whilst Government funding is available for the lessons, none is available for childcare for Term 4 – necessary if you have small children. The cost of childcare for the group is a staggering $2000 per term. We as a group felt that contributing our funds to childcare, thus allowing more women to attend classes would have a very good outcome. Helen said that being able to report to Government that they had funding for childcare from an outside group would also help their application for more class funding. Please help this worthwhile cause by supporting the Retiring Collection or at any other time with an envelope marked ‘Anglicare Broadmeadows Women’s Communiy House’ in the Sunday collection. Thank you all in anticipation of your help. Marg Kelly, Irene Shorthouse and members of the Anglicare Group.
