Dear Parishioners, The Jews were appalled and the disciples were confused when Jesus said "unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you have no life in you." What a hard saying, unless you understand who Jesus is and why he calls himself the bread of life. In the Old Testament bread and wine were offered in a thanksgiving sacrifice as a sign of grateful admission to the Creator as the giver and sustainer of life. Melchizedek, who was both a priest and king (Genesis 14:18), offered a sacrifice of bread and wine. His offering heralded the offering made by Jesus, our high priest and king (Hebrews 7:26; 9:11; 10:12). The remembrance of the manna in the wilderness recalled to the people of Israel that they live - not by earthly bread alone - but by the bread of the Word of God (Deuteronomy 8:3). At the last supper when Jesus blessed the cup of wine, he gave it to his disciples saying, "Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins" (Matthew 26:28). Jesus was pointing to the sacrifice he was about to make on the cross, when he would shed his blood for us - thus pouring himself out and giving himself to us - as an atoning sacrifice for our sins and the sins of the world. His death on the cross fulfilled the sacrifice of the paschal (passover) lamb whose blood spared the Israelites from death in Egypt. Augustine of Hippo, (354-430 AD) bishop and early church father focuses our minds on the essence of the Eucharist: “Jesus recommended to us His Body and Blood in bread and wine, elements that are reduced into one out of many constituents. What is meant by eating that food and taking that drink is this: to remain in Christ and have Him remaining in us.” (1) Paul the Apostle tells us that "Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed" (1 Corinthians 5:7). Paul uses the words of John the Baptist who called Jesus the "Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world" (John 1:29). Jesus made himself an offering and sacrifice, a gift that was truly pleasing to the Father. He "offered himself without blemish to God" (Hebrews 9:14) and "gave himself as a sacrifice to God" (Ephesians 5:2). Jesus’ passing over to his Father by his death and resurrection - the new passover - is anticipated in the Last Supper and celebrated in the Eucharist or Lord's Supper, which fulfils the Jewish Passover and anticipates the final Passover of the church in the glory of God's kingdom. When the Lord Jesus commands his disciples to eat his flesh and drink his blood, he invites us to take his life into the very centre of our being. THE BAPTISM

When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church. Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection. While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a childâ€™s character. In this service of baptism we bring Alice into Godâ€™s presence that she may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.

The Baptism party gathers around the font. The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit? A/ I do. Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Alice for baptism? A/ I will. Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage her in the life and faith of the Christian community? A/ I will. Q/ As your life will be an example to Alice, will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions? A/ I will. Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy? A/ I will. Priest to the congregation: You have heard our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Prayers and Blessing of the water [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Alice may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in her where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom. And now we give you thanks that you have called Alice to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. + Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that all who are baptized may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

An affirmation of faith Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming the faith of the church. Do you believe in God the Father? A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, Godâ€™s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? (Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used in anointing to symbolize being chosen in God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in Christ.)

Enable all who are baptized in your name to live as your faithful people. Fulfil your promises for Alice, we pray, and grant that she may grow in your faith and service. We pray for Felicia, Damien and Aidan, that in your Spirit of wisdom, Alice’s family may grow in your love, and their home share in the joy of your eternal kingdom. And we pray for Alices’s godparents, Toby and Phelissitie; enable them to share with their goddaughter what you have revealed to us of your love in your holy gospel. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: â€œGod be in my headâ€?, George Bayley. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

This is great achievement by Harry and continues on from his State selection last year. Trinity Times – 2018 Winter edition: This edition is now available for collection and distribution so please collect your copy of Trinity Times from the back of the church. If you know anyone to whom you could deliver Trinity Times please do not hesitate to assist us in its distribution. Thanks to everyone who assisted in writing articles and the production of this edition of Trinity Times. Trinity Times Folding - If you are willing and able to assist 3 times a year (prior to Easter and Christmas and in July), for a couple of hours on a weekday, with the folding and labelling of Trinity Times, would you please speak to either Rosemary Nairn or Leonie Bird or contact the Church office – 9853 7158. National Trust Appeal - HTK’s National Trust Appeal has been of huge benefit to the Parish, allowing vital maintenance on the Church that we would have otherwise struggled to fund. We are about to commence work on the Vicarage roof, which is leaking, and the total cost of this is around $100,000 so any donations, small or large, towards this would be very gratefully accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Donation forms are in the rack at the back of the church, or speak to Brenda in the church office or call Alan Wilson on 0414 470 460.

Update on Access: Memorial Garden: We now have access to the Memorial Garden either using the outside path going around the northern end of the Church or through the Chapel door. Please note that there are no railings for either the stairs or ramp outside the Chapel door at this stage, so please take care. Church: Access is through the Pakington Street entrance as before but the Chapel door will now be open for Wednesday services. Access through the main gates or main doors remains closed. Church Office and Vicarage: Access remains the same - at the northern end of the Church off Pakington Street. There are two alternatives for access from Pakington Street - stairs and a pathway, both outside the Church office. 8am Sunday Roster allocations In most Anglican congregations in Melbourne the 8am service on a Sunday characteristically involves a congregation of 10-30 people and usually there would be a roster that involves 1 to 2 people. At Holy Trinity currently we try to roster 5 people in various roles at the 8am service and are struggling to do this effectively. We are very short of volunteers to fulfil the various roles as outlined in the service roster for Sunday 8am services. Particularly, we have no robed server for the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sunday to assist the priest and administer the eucharistic cups. We are also short of readers and chalice assistants and welcomers. We need to fill reliably these positions for the roster or we need to change the way we do things. If you have any ideas to solve this problem practically and once and for all please let the Vicar know. For the new roster in August if we have no new volunteers to robe as servers who can reliably cover the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays- the priest will assist themselves and the eucharistic cups once consecrated will be placed by the priest on a small table at the western end of the altar rail for people to take after receiving the Body of Christ. Also if we cannot fill places in the roster for chalice assistants, the priest will fill those roles. Hopefully one way or another we will ease the burden of the various roles upon the congregation for 8am by filling reliably the 5 positions each week or go to a lighter model reflecting what happens in many other churches. Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety Holy Trinity Child and Vulnerable Persons Policy. The Parish Council (upon the recommendations of HTK Child and Vulnerable Person sub-committee) has endorsed the Holy Trinity Child Safe and Vulnerable Persons Policy. Holy Trinity Kew is committed to protecting the safety of young people and vulnerable adults who participate in its programs, ministries and events. This includes the Sunday School and the Choir. On 22 March 2018, the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne approved a Code of Conduct for Child Safety. There are copies of the Holy Trinity Child Safe Policy and the Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety at the back of the church for your attention. Each parishioner is urged to read Child Safe Policy and the Code of Conduct. If you are an adult who has regular contact with children (anyone under the age of 18 years) you will be requested to make a Statement of Commitment for the Code of Conduct for Child Safety. This process has commenced and will continue in the coming weeks.
