Dear Parishioners, Jesus' question to the crowd, and to each one of us as well, echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah: "Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which does not satisfy" (Isaiah 55:2)? There are two fundamental types of hunger - physical and spiritual. Only the Lord Jesus can satisfy the deepest hunger in our heart - the hunger for everlasting truth, life, and love. Jesus alone can satisfy our hunger for truth - because in him alone is the Truth which is found in God. Jesus alone can satisfy our hunger for life - because he alone can give us abundant life - the supernatural life of God which transforms us now and lasts forever. Jesus alone can satisfy our deepest hunger for love - the love of God that knows no end, that never fails nor forsakes us, that outlasts sin and death. Jesus alone can satisfy the eternal hunger of our heart, mind, and spirit. Jesus spoke about the works of God and what we must do to be doing the works of God, namely to believe in God's Son whom he has sent into the world. The Lord Jesus offers a new relationship with God which issues in a new kind of life - a life of sacrificial love, selfless service, and the forgiveness of others which corresponds to God's mercy, goodness and loving kindness; a life of holiness, purity, and truth which corresponds to God's holiness; and a life of obedience and trust which corresponds to God's offer of abundant life, peace, and happiness. This is the work which Jesus directs us to and enables us to perform in the power of the Holy Spirit. God is our landlord, by Augustine of Hippo, (354-430 AD) reminds us of the temporary nature of our stay here on earth: "Our wish, you see, is to attain to eternal life. We wish to reach the place where nobody dies, but if possible we do not want to get there via death. We would like to be whisked away there while we are still alive and see our bodies changed, while we are alive, into that spiritual form into which they are to be changed when we rise again. Who wouldn't like that? Isn't it what everybody wants? But while that is what you want, you are told, Quit. Remember what you have sung in the psalm: 'A lodger am I on earth.' If you are a lodger, you are staying in someone else's house; if you are staying in someone else's house, you quit when the landlord bids you. And the landlord is bound to tell you to quit sooner or later, and he has not guaranteed you a long stay. After all, he did not sign a contract with you. Seeing that you are lodging with him for nothing, you quit when he tells you to. And this, too, has to be put up with, and for this, too, patience is very necessary." Hymn: ‘Tis good, Lord, to be here! NEH 178

1. ‘Tis good, Lord, to be here! thy glory fills the night; thy face and garments, like the sun, shine with unborrowed light.

4. Before we taste of death, we see thy Kingdom come; we fain would hold the vision bright, and make this hill our home.

2. ‘Tis good, Lord, to be here, thy beauty to behold, where Moses and Elijah stand, thy messengers of old.

5. ‘Tis good, Lord, to be here! yet we may not remain; but since thou bidst us leave the mount, come with us to the plain.

3. Fulfiller of the past, promise of things to be: we hail thy body glorified, and our redemption see.

Joseph Armitage Robinson 1858–1933

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you.

4

Sentence: Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which does not satisfy? Eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

5

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect Living God, whose Son Jesus fed the hungry with the bread of his life and the word of his kingdom: renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us with your true and living bread, Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Exodus 16:2-15 2 There

in the desert they all complained to Moses and Aaron 3 and said to them, “We wish that the LORD had killed us in Egypt. There we could at least sit down and eat meat and as much other food as we wanted. But you have brought us out into this desert to starve us all to death.” 4 The LORD said to Moses, “Now I am going to cause food to rain down from the sky for all of you. The people must go out every day and gather enough for that day. In this way I can test them to find out if they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day they are to bring in twice as much as usual and prepare it.” 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “This evening you will know that it was the LORD who brought you out of Egypt. 7 In the morning you will see the dazzling light of the LORD's presence. He has heard your complaints against him—yes, against him, because we are only carrying out his instructions.” 8 Then Moses said, “It is the LORD who will give you meat to eat in the evening and as much bread as you want in the morning, because he has heard how much you have complained against him. When you complain against us, you are really complaining against the LORD.” 9 Moses said to Aaron, “Tell the whole community to come and stand before the LORD, because he has heard their complaints.” 10 As Aaron spoke to the whole community, they turned toward the desert, and suddenly the dazzling light of the LORD appeared in a cloud. 11 The LORD said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the complaints of the Israelites. Tell them that at twilight they will have meat to eat, and in the morning they will have all the bread they want. Then they will know that I, the LORD, am their God.” 13 In the evening a large flock of quails flew in, enough to cover the camp, and in the morning there was dew all around the camp. 14 When the dew evaporated, there was something thin and flaky on the surface of the desert. It was as delicate as frost. 15 When the Israelites saw it, they didn't know what it was and asked each other, “What is it?” Moses said to them, “This is the food that the LORD has given you to eat.

Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God. 9

Psalm: 78:16-30

16 But for all this they sinned yet|more a|gainst him: and rebelled against the Most|High|in the|desert. 17 They wilfully put|God • to the|test: and de|manded|food • for their|appetite. 18 They spoke against|God and|said: ‘Can God prepare a|table|in the|wilderness? 19 ‘He indeed struck the rock, so that the waters gushed and the|streams • over|flowed: but can he also give bread or provide|meat|for his|people?’ 20 When the Lord heard it he was angry, and a fire was kindled a|gainst|Jacob: his wrath|blazed a|gainst|Israel. 21 For they put no|trust in|God: nor would they be|lieve his|power to|save. 22 Then he commanded the|clouds a|bove: and|opened • the|doors of|heaven. 23 He rained down manna for|them to|eat: and|gave them • the|grain of|heaven.

10

24 So men ate the|bread of|angels: and he|sent them|food • in a|bundance. 25 He stirred up the south east|wind • in the|heavens: and|guided • it|by his|power. 26 He rained down meat upon them|thick as|dust: and winged|birds • like the|sands • of the|sea. 27 He made them fall into the|midst of • their|camp: and|all a|bout their|tents. 28 So they ate and were|well|filled: for he had|given • them|what • they de|sired. 29 But before they had|satisfied • their|craving: while the|food was|still in • their|mouths, 2nd Part of Chant: 30 The anger of God|blazed • up a|gainst them: and he slew their strongest men and laid|low the|youth of|Israel. Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men.

Second Reading: Ephesians 4:17-24 17-19 This

is my instruction, then, which I give you from God. Do not live any longer as the Gentiles live. For they live blindfold in a world of illusion, and cut off from the life of God through ignorance and insensitiveness. They have stifled their consciences and then surrendered themselves to sensuality, practising any form of impurity which lust can suggest. 20-24 But you have learned nothing like that from Christ, if you have really heard his voice and understood the truth that he has taught you. No, what you learned was to fling off the dirty clothes of the old way of living, which were rotted through and through with lust’s illusions, and, with yourselves mentally and spiritually re-made, to put on the clean fresh clothes of the new life which was made by God’s design for righteousness and the holiness which is no illusion. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: Jesus, good above all other NEH 387

1. Jesus, good above all other, gentle Child of gentle Mother, in a stable born our Redeemer, give us grace to persevere. 2. Jesus, cradled in a manger, for us facing every danger, living as a homeless stranger, make we thee our King most dear.

4. Jesus, who our sorrows bearest, all our thoughts and hopes thou sharest, thou to man the truth declarest; help us all thy truth to hear. 5. Lord, in all our doings guide us; pride and hate shall ne’er divide us; we'll go on with thee beside us, and with joy we'll persevere!

3. Jesus, for thy people dying, risen Master, death defying, Lord in heaven, thy grace supplying, keep us to thy presence near.

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 6 beginning at the 24th verse.

When the crowd realised that neither Jesus nor the disciples were there any longer, they themselves got into the boats and went off to Capernaum to look for Jesus. When they had found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, “Master, when did you come here?” 26-27 “Believe me,” replied Jesus, “you are looking for me now not because you saw my signs but because you ate that food and had all you wanted. You should not work for the food which does not last but for the food which lasts on into eternal life. This is the food the Son of Man will give you, and he is the one who bears the stamp of God the Father.” 28 This made them ask him, “What must we do to carry out the work of God?” 29 “The work of God for you,” replied Jesus, “is to believe in the one whom he has sent to you.” 30-31 Then they asked him, “Then what sign can you give us that will make us believe in you? What work are you doing? Our forefathers ate manna in the desert just as the scripture says, ‘He gave them bread out of Heaven to eat.’” 32-33 To which Jesus replied, “Yes, but what matters is not that Moses gave you bread from Heaven, but that my Father is giving you the true bread from Heaven. For the bread of God which comes down from Heaven gives life to the world.” 34 This made them say to him, “Lord, please give us this bread, always!” 35 Then Jesus said to them, “I myself am the bread of life. The man who comes to me will never be hungry and the man who believes in me will never again be thirsty.” John 6:24-35

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “A Gaelic Blessing, Rutter. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

21

Final Hymn: Morning has broken NEH 237

1. Morning has broken like the first morning; blackbird has spoken like the first bird. Praise for the singing, praise for the morning, praise for them, springing fresh from the word.

3. Mine is the sunlight; mine is the morning born of the one light Eden saw play. Praise with elation, praise every morning, God’s re-creation of the new day. Eleanor Farjeon 1881–1965

2. Sweet the rain’s new fall sunlit from heaven, like the first dewfall on the first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where his feet pass.

Readings for Sunday, August 12, 2018 1st Reading 1 Kings 19:4-8 Psalm 34:1-10 2nd Reading Ephesians 4:25-32 Gospel John 6:35, 41-51

GENERAL NOTICES Birthdays: Billy Cockram (Today), Aston Calder (Tomorrow), Margaret Righton, Olivia Pandy (Tuesday), Dennis Livingstone, RÊmi Foster (Wednesday), Elizabeth Buckmaster (Thursday). Sunday School Trading Table TODAY. National Trust Appeal - HTK’s National Trust Appeal has been of huge benefit to the Parish, allowing vital maintenance on the Church that we would have otherwise struggled to fund. We are about to commence work on the Vicarage roof, which is leaking, and the total cost of this is $93,320 so any donations, small or large, towards this would be very gratefully accepted. Donations are tax deductible. Donation forms are in the rack at the back of the church, or speak to Brenda in the church office or call Alan Wilson on 0414 470 460. Access around the Church: Please note that there is no longer any access in or out of the Chapel door. If you need to go to the Vicarage (for breakfast, morning tea, bathroom) you will have to go out the Pakington Street entrance, walk up the street to the North end (Vicarage end) of the Church and walk along the pathway to the Vicarage. Access to the Church: Through the Pakington Street entrance. Access to the Church office and Vicarage: At the North end of the Church off Pakington Street. There are two alternatives for access - stairs and a pathway, both outside the Church office. Access to the Memorial Garden: We apologise but there is no access to the Memorial Garden at this time. 8am Sunday Roster allocations In most Anglican congregations in Melbourne the 8am service on a Sunday characteristically involves a congregation of 10-30 people and usually there would be a roster that involves 1 to 2 people. At Holy Trinity currently we try to roster 5 people in various roles at the 8am service and are struggling to do this effectively. We are very short of volunteers to fulfil the various roles as outlined in the service 24

roster for Sunday 8am services. Particularly, we have no robed server for the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sunday to assist the priest and administer the eucharistic cups. We are also short of readers and chalice assistants and welcomers. We need to fill reliably these positions for the roster or we need to change the way we do things. If you have any ideas to solve this problem practically and once and for all please let the Vicar know. For the new roster in August if we have no new volunteers to robe as servers who can reliably cover the 2nd, 4th and 5th Sundays- the priest will assist themselves and the eucharistic cups once consecrated will be placed by the priest on a small table at the western end of the altar rail for people to take after receiving the Body of Christ. Also if we cannot fill places in the roster for chalice assistants, the priest will fill those roles. Hopefully one way or another we will ease the burden of the various roles upon the congregation for 8am by filling reliably the 5 positions each week or go to a lighter model reflecting what happens in many other churches. Best wishes, The Vicar Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety Holy Trinity Child and Vulnerable Persons Policy. The Parish Council (upon the recommendations of HTK Child and Vulnerable Person sub-committee) has endorsed the Holy Trinity Child Safe and Vulnerable Persons Policy. Holy Trinity Kew is committed to protecting the safety of young people and vulnerable adults who participate in its programs, ministries and events. This includes the Sunday School and the Choir. On 22 March 2018, the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne approved a Code of Conduct for Child Safety. There are copies of the Holy Trinity Child Safe Policy and the Anglican Code of Conduct for Child Safety at the back of the church for your attention. Each parishioner is urged to read Child Safe Policy and the Code of Conduct. If you are an adult who has regular contact with children (anyone under the age of 18 years) you will be requested to make a Statement of Commitment for the Code of Conduct for Child Safety. This process has commenced and will continue in the coming weeks. The Parish Council and the Holy Trinity Child Safe Sub Committee thank you for your continued support and co-operation in promoting a Child Safe parish. If you have any queries in relation to these matters please do not hesitate to contact either Rev’d Robert Newton or a member of the Child Safe SubCommittee.
