Welcome to Holy Trinity, where services have been held, in this church, since 1863. We pray that you will feel the presence of God and know his blessings in your life. You are invited to Morning Tea after today’s service in the Vicarage. CHURCH TOILETS CURRENTLY LOCATED IN VICARAGE Crèche Area: is in the transept near the pulpit. Parents and children are welcome to enter by the church aisle or by the side door.
Dear Parishioners, This is a Sunday when many preachers in the Anglican Church avoid the elephant in the room- Satan! Even though our Gospel has his persona and effects front and centre! The Satan or the Devil commonly called, loves fundamentalist Christians who use him as an object of fear and control and he adores liberal Christians who like our secular world play down his importance or declare he doesn’t exist. Either way he has won! CS Lewis writing in The Screwtape Letters (1942) puts it this way: “Here are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.” Jesus came to free us from the greatest danger of all - the corrupting force of evil which destroys us from within and makes us slaves to sin and Satan (John 8:34). Evil is not an impersonal force that just happens. It has a name and a face and it seeks to master every heart and soul on the face of the earth (1 Peter 5:8-9). Scripture identifies the Evil One by many names, 'Satan', ‘Beelzebub - the prince of demons', the 'Devil', the 'Deceiver', the 'Father of Lies', and 'Lucifier', the fallen angel who broke rank with God and established his own army and kingdom in opposition to God. Jesus declared that he came to overthrow the power of Satan and his kingdom (John 12:31). Jesus' numerous exorcisms cannot just all be explained away, for they brought freedom to many who were troubled and oppressed by the work of evil spirits. Jesus himself encountered personal opposition and battle with Satan when he was put to the test in the wilderness just before his public ministry (Matthew 4:1; Luke 4:1). He overcame the Evil One through his obedience to the will of his Father. Some of the Jewish leaders reacted vehemently to Jesus' healings and exorcisms and they opposed him with malicious slander. How could Jesus get the power and authority to release individuals from Satan's influence and control? They assumed that he had to be in league with Satan. They attributed his power to Satan rather than to God. Jesus asserts that no kingdom divided against itself can survive for long. We have witnessed enough civil wars, genocides and terrorism in our own time to prove the destructive force at work here for the annihilation of whole peoples and their land. If Satan lends his power against his own forces then he is finished. Cyril of Alexandria, a 5th century church father explains the force of Jesus' argument: Kingdoms are established by the fidelity of subjects and the obedience of those under the royal sceptre. Houses are established when those who belong to them in no way whatsoever thwart one another but, on the contrary, agree in will and deed. I suppose it would establish the kingdom too of Beelzebub, had he determined to abstain from everything contrary to himself. How then does Satan cast out Satan? It follows then that devils do not depart from people on their own accord but retire unwillingly. 'Satan,' he says, 'does not fight with 2
himself.' He does not rebuke his own servants. He does not permit himself to injure his own armour-bearers. On the contrary, he helps his kingdom. 'It remains for you to understand that I crush Satan by divine power.' (1) Jesus asserted his authority to cast out demons as a clear demonstration of the reign of God. God's power is clearly at work in the exorcisms which Jesus performed and they give evidence that God's kingdom has come. What kind of spiritual danger or harm should we avoid at all costs? Jesus used the illustration of a strong man whose house and possessions were kept secure. How could such a person be overtaken and robbed of his goods except by someone who is stronger than himself? Satan, who is our foe and the arch-enemy of God, is stronger than us. Unless we are clothed in God's strength, we cannot withstand Satan with our own human strength. What does Satan wish to take from us - our faith and confidence in God and our allegiance to follow God's law. Satan is a rebel and a liar. Satan can only have power or dominion over us if we listen to his lies and succumb to his will which is contrary to the will of God. Jesus makes it clear that there are no neutral parties in this world. We are either for Jesus or against him, for the kingdom of God or against it. There are two kingdoms in opposition to one another - the kingdom of God's light and truth and the kingdom of darkness and deception under the rule of Satan. If we disobey God's word, we open to door to the power of sin and Satan's influence in our lives. If we want to live in true freedom from the power of sin and Satan, then our "house" - our mind and heart and whatever we allow to control our appetites and desires - must be occupied and ruled by Jesus Christ where he is enthroned as Lord and Saviour. Do you know the peace and security of a life submitted to God and to his word? What is the basis of our hope and confidence in God? Through Jesus' death on the cross and his victory over the grave when he rose again on the third day, Satan has been defeated and death has been overcome. We now share in Christ's victory over sin and Satan and receive adoption as God's sons and daughters. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Lord enables us to live a new life of love and freedom from slavery to sin. The Lord Jesus is our refuge and strength because he makes his home with us (John 15:4) and gives us the power and help of the Holy Spirit. Do you take refuge in the Lord and allow him to be the Ruler of your life? Yours In Christ, Fr Robert 1) https://trinityinyou.com/cyril-of-alexandrias-commentary-on-luke-sermons-57-80 05/06/2018

Hymn: Thou whose almighty word NEH 466
1. Thou whose almighty word chaos and darkness heard, and took their flight: hear us, we humbly pray, and where the gospel day sheds not its glorious ray, let there be light.
3. Spirit of truth and love, life-giving holy dove, speed forth thy flight; move o’er the waters’ face, bearing the lamp of grace, and in earth’s darkest place let there be light.
2. Thou who didst come to bring on thy redeeming wing healing and sight, health to the sick in mind, sight to the inly blind, O now to all mankind let there be light.
4. Holy and blessèd Three, glorious Trinity, Wisdom, Love, Might, boundless as ocean’s tide rolling in fullest pride, through the world far and wide, let there be light. John Marriott 1780–1825
Invocation:
Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.
Greeting:
The Lord be with you. And also with you. 4
Sentence: [Here are my mother and my brothers!] Whoever does the will of God is my brother and my sister and my mother. The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ~ The Sunday School now departs to the Memorial Chapel. Any children in the congregation are welcome to join them. ~

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Genesis 3:8-15 8 They
heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’ 10 He said, ‘I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.’ 11 He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?’ 12 The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.’ 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, ‘What is this that you have done?’ The woman said, ‘The serpent tricked me, and I ate.’ 14 The LORD God said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you among all animals and among all wild creatures; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.’ Response:
Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Second Reading: A reading from the second letter of Paul to the Corinthians, Chapter 4 beginning at the 13th verse. But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture – ‘I believed, and so I spoke’ - we also believe, and so we speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. 15 Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God. 16 So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. 17 For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure, 18 because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. 1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1 13
Response:
Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us TiS 580
1. Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us o’er the world’s tempestuous sea; guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us, for we have no help but thee; yet possessing every blessing if our God our Father be. 2. Saviour, breathe forgiveness o’er us; all our weakness thou dost know; thou didst tread this earth before us, thou didst feel its keenest woe: lone and dreary, faint and weary, through the desert thou didst go. 3. Spirit of our God, descending, fill our hearts with heavenly joy, love with every passion blending, pleasure that can never cloy: thus provided, pardoned, guided, nothing can our peace destroy. James Edmeston 1791–1867
WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA Sung by Choir & Congregation 11
The Lord be with you, and also with you. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 3 beginning at the 20th verse.
and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. 21 When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, ‘He has gone out of his mind.’ 22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, ‘He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.’ 23 And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. 27 But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. 28 ‘Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter; 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin’ - 30 for they had said, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’ 31 Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, ‘Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.’ 33 And he replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ 34 And looking at those who sat around him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.’ Mark 3:20-35 20
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

SERMON

(copy of sermon available at back of church and on web)
The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 13
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for all people and for the Church throughout the world. Each petition of intercession or thanksgiving concludes with, Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Ave Verum, Elgar. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.
Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

Final Hymn: Just as I am, without one plea TiS 584(i)
1. Just as I am, without one plea but that your blood was shed for me, and that you would my Saviour be, O Lamb of God, I come.
4. Just as I am, you will receive, will welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve; because your promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come.
2. Just as I am, though tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come.
5. Just as I am — your love unknown has broken every barrier down — now to be yours, and yours alone, O Lamb of God, I come.
3. Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind — sight, riches, healing of the mind, yes, all I need, in you to find, O Lamb of God, I come.
6. Just as I am, of that free love the breadth, length, depth and height to prove, here for a season, then above, O Lamb of God, I come. Charlotte Elliott 1789–1871 alt.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE GOSPEL OF ST MARK? Sometime ago I raised the prospect of picking up from one my sermons and offering to run a different sort of bible study. This one would focus on the Gospel of St Mark in its entirety. Rather than trying to do the whole study in one long process I am suggesting 3 x five-week sessions with 2 or 3 weeks breaks in between. As there are 16 chapters this lends itself to good bite size chunks of 5 chapters. I recently rediscovered a Markan commentary I bought several years ago called, “Binding the Strongman” and it brought a whole new perspective to the gospel for me. The difference is partly to be found in the subtitle “A political reading of Mark’s story of Jesus.” Since its publication in 1988, Binding the Strong Man has been widely recognized as a landmark in contemporary biblical criticism. Applying a multidisciplinary approach called socio-literary method, Myers integrates literary criticism, sociohistorical exegesis, and political hermeneutics in his investigation of Mark as a manifesto of radical discipleship. As my time is somewhat freer now, I would be prepared to offer them up to 3 times during the week, one after the 10 am Eucharist on Sunday, another in the day time during the week and another on a weeknight. Each lasting no more than an hour. There will be a signup sheet at the back of the Church for the next 2-3 weeks. HYMN SELECTIONS AT HOLY TRINITY KEW Since becoming Vicar at Holy Trinity Kew I have been keenly observing and implementing innovations, additions and resurrections of important and great hymns into our collection of generally used hymns for public worship. This has resulted in us regaining a great tradition of English hymns befitting our choir, organ and musical reputation. We have continued to use hymns from the Australian Hymn Book (1977) and Together in Song (1999) now out of print, but used where useful. However, I have increasingly used selections from the English Hymnal (1906 &1933) and New English Hymnal (1986) to enrich, reenliven and broaden our musical tradition to match that of the great English choral parish churches and cathedrals of the Anglican Communion. The English Hymnal is a hymn book which was published in 1906 for the Church of England by Oxford University Press. It was edited by the clergyman and writer Percy Dearmer and the composer and music historian Ralph Vaughan Williams, and is a highly significant publication in the history of Anglican church music. The preface to the hymnal began with the statement, "A collection of the best hymns in the English language." Much of the contents was used for the first time at St Mary's Primrose Hill in north London, and the book could be considered a musical companion to Dearmer's book on English ceremonial, The Parson's Handbook. The high quality of the music is due largely to the work of Vaughan Williams as musical editor. The standard of the arrangements and original compositions made it the most influential hymnal of the 20th century. The hymnal included the first printing of several arrangements and hymn settings by Vaughan Williams. Among the most famous are Sine Nomine, a new tune to "For All the Saints"; and "Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones", a new text for the hymn tune Lasst uns erfreuen. The hymnal also includes many original plainsong melodies (in plainsong notation). The book is a characteristic green colour and was traditionally associated with churches with a strong choral tradition. When the book was published, High and Broad churches used Hymns Ancient and Modern, and Evangelical churches normally used the Hymnal Companion to the Book of Common Prayer. The hymnal has, however, been adopted not only in various movements of Anglicanism but also in several other denominations such as some Roman Catholic churches. A new edition of the musical content of The English Hymnal was issued in 1933, which principally had better accompaniments by JH Arnold to the plainsong melodies, and a supplement to the Hymnal, English Praise, in 1975. 24
The New English Hymnal is a hymn book and liturgical source first published in 1986. It was published by the Canterbury Press (now SCM Canterbury Press). It is a successor to, and published in the same style as, the 1906 and 1933 English Hymnal. It inherits much music from the earlier books, and although a few hymns are dropped many newer or re-written hymns are added, most of which had previously appeared in the intervening supplement English Praise. Although the words of several hymns have been altered slightly, it nonetheless enjoys continuing favour in a considerable number of cathedrals and collegiate chapels worldwide and it is a significant publication in Anglican church music. In its Preface the editors make their position clear on modern Christian hymns and songs: “The post-war surge in hymn-writing has not been ignored, but we regard much of it as poor in quality and ephemeral in expression. In particular, while the social gospel is an important element in Christian teaching, its translation into verse can be so contemporary that it quickly becomes dated. It remains true that the offering of objective praise and worship to God, the lover of mankind, is the ultimate ground of man's love of his fellow-man. By including a section headed 'The Kingdom of God' and similar hymns elsewhere in the book, we have not overlooked the social duty of Christians, but we believe that its application to immediate needs can often be better expressed in sermons and prayers than in hymnody.” The then chairman of the English Hymnal Company, George Timms, was its general editor. The musical editor was Anthony Caesar-who is an English priest (who trained at St Stephen’s House Oxford) organist and composer, with significant assistance from Arthur Hutchings (Professor of Music University of Durham) Christopher Dearnley (organist St Paul’s London) Martin Draper, Colin Roberts and Michael Fleming (Warden of the Royal School of Church Music). I hope that the above information assists you in understanding the musical movement in the current and ongoing selection of hymns at Holy Trinity Kew and how we are placed within the great church musical tradition of the Anglican Church. Holy Trinity Kew has been a member of the Royal School of Church Music since 1937, a mere ten years after its foundation in England in 1927 and as such is a major inheritor of a fine Anglican choral music tradition, most effectively reflected in the English Hymnal and New English Hymnal.
