Dear Parishioners, Jesus not only claims to speak the truth, he calls himself the very source of truth when he proclaims that he is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). Now Jesus promises to send his disciples the Spirit of truth who will guide them in understanding all that Jesus came to say and do. It is through the gift and working of the Holy Spirit, who enlightens our hearts and minds, that we come to understand that the Godhead is a trinity of persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The ultimate end, the purpose for which God created us, is the entry of God's creatures into the perfect unity of the blessed Trinity. In baptism we are called to share in the life of the Holy Trinity here on earth in faith and after death in eternal light. Origen (185-254 AD) an early church father wrote a beautiful prayer that sums up a powerful sense of appreciation of the Trinity: "May the Lord Jesus put his hands on our eyes also, for then we too shall begin to look not at what is seen but at what is not seen. May he open the eyes that are concerned not with the present but with what is yet to come, may he unseal the heart's vision, that we may gaze on God in the Spirit, through the same Lord, Jesus Christ, whose glory and power will endure throughout the unending succession of ages." The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: â€œAlta Trinita Beataâ€? Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE GOSPEL OF ST MARK? Sometime ago I raised the prospect of picking up from one my sermons and offering to run a different sort of bible study. This one would focus on the Gospel of St Mark in its entirety. Rather than trying to do the whole study in one long process I am suggesting 3 x five-week sessions with 2 or 3 weeks breaks in between. As there are 16 chapters this lends itself to good bite size chunks of 5 chapters. I recently rediscovered a Markan commentary I bought several years ago called, “Binding the Strongman” and it brought a whole new perspective to the gospel for me. The difference is partly to be found in the subtitle “A political reading of Mark’s story of Jesus.” Since its publication in 1988, Binding the Strong Man has been widely recognized as a landmark in contemporary biblical criticism. Applying a multidisciplinary approach called socio-literary method, Myers integrates literary criticism, sociohistorical exegesis, and political hermeneutics in his investigation of Mark as a manifesto of radical discipleship. As my time is somewhat freer now, I would be prepared to offer them up to 3 times during the week, one after the 10 am Eucharist on Sunday, another in the day time during the week and another on a weeknight. HYMN SELECTIONS AT HOLY TRINITY KEW Since becoming Vicar at Holy Trinity Kew I have been keenly observing and implementing innovations, additions and resurrections of important and great hymns into our collection of generally used hymns for public worship. This has resulted in us regaining a great tradition of English hymns befitting our choir, organ and musical reputation. We have continued to use hymns from the Australian Hymn Book (1977) and Together in Song (1999) now out of print, but used where useful. However, I have increasingly used selections from the English Hymnal (1906 &1933) and New English Hymnal (1986) to enrich, reenliven and broaden our musical tradition to match that of the great English choral parish churches and cathedrals of the Anglican Communion. The English Hymnal is a hymn book which was published in 1906 for the Church of England by Oxford University Press. It was edited by the clergyman and writer Percy Dearmer and the composer and music historian Ralph Vaughan Williams, and is a highly significant publication in the history of Anglican church music. The preface to the hymnal began with the statement, "A collection of the best hymns in the English language." Much of the contents was used for the first time at St Mary's Primrose Hill in north London, and the book could be considered a musical companion to Dearmer's book on English ceremonial, The Parson's Handbook. The high quality of the music is due largely to the work of Vaughan Williams as musical editor. The standard of the arrangements and original compositions made it the most influential hymnal of the 20th century. The hymnal included the first printing of several arrangements and hymn settings by Vaughan Williams. Among the most famous are Sine Nomine, a new tune to "For All the Saints"; and "Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones", a new text for the hymn tune Lasst uns erfreuen. The hymnal also includes many original plainsong melodies (in plainsong notation). The book is a characteristic green colour and was traditionally associated with churches with a strong choral tradition. When the book was published, High and Broad churches used Hymns Ancient and Modern, and Evangelical churches normally used the Hymnal Companion to the Book of Common Prayer. The hymnal has, however, been adopted not only in various movements of Anglicanism but also in several other denominations such as some Roman Catholic churches. A new edition of the musical content of The English Hymnal was issued in 1933, which principally had better accompaniments by JH Arnold to the plainsong melodies, and a supplement to the Hymnal, English Praise, in 1975. 29

The New English Hymnal is a hymn book and liturgical source first published in 1986. It was published by the Canterbury Press (now SCM Canterbury Press). It is a successor to, and published in the same style as, the 1906 and 1933 English Hymnal. It inherits much music from the earlier books, and although a few hymns are dropped many newer or re-written hymns are added, most of which had previously appeared in the intervening supplement English Praise. Although the words of several hymns have been altered slightly, it nonetheless enjoys continuing favour in a considerable number of cathedrals and collegiate chapels worldwide and it is a significant publication in Anglican church music. In its Preface the editors make their position clear on modern Christian hymns and songs: “The post-war surge in hymn-writing has not been ignored, but we regard much of it as poor in quality and ephemeral in expression. In particular, while the social gospel is an important element in Christian teaching, its translation into verse can be so contemporary that it quickly becomes dated. It remains true that the offering of objective praise and worship to God, the lover of mankind, is the ultimate ground of man's love of his fellow-man. By including a section headed 'The Kingdom of God' and similar hymns elsewhere in the book, we have not overlooked the social duty of Christians, but we believe that its application to immediate needs can often be better expressed in sermons and prayers than in hymnody.” The then chairman of the English Hymnal Company, George Timms, was its general editor. The musical editor was Anthony Caesar-who is an English priest (who trained at St Stephen’s House Oxford) organist and composer, with significant assistance from Arthur Hutchings (Professor of Music University of Durham) Christopher Dearnley (organist St Paul’s London) Martin Draper, Colin Roberts and Michael Fleming (Warden of the Royal School of Church Music). I hope that the above information assists you in understanding the musical movement in the current and ongoing selection of hymns at Holy Trinity Kew and how we are placed within the great church musical tradition of the Anglican Church. Holy Trinity Kew has been a member of the Royal School of Church Music since 1937, a mere ten years after its foundation in England in 1927 and as such is a major inheritor of a fine Anglican choral music tradition, most effectively reflected in the English Hymnal and New English Hymnal.
