Dear Parishioners, We welcome Paul McDonald CEO of Anglicare Victoria to our 10am service today where he will speak to us about some of the most important work done in our state. Sometimes it is good to hear about the fruits of the Gospel and their outworking in the wider community, so that we are reminded of the power of the Christian Gospel led by the Holy Spirit. I encourage you to remain for morning tea and have an informal chat with Paul after the service. The image of the vine was a rich and varied one for the people of Israel since the land was covered with many vineyards. Isaiah spoke of the house of Israel as "the vineyard of the Lord” (Isaiah 5:7). Jeremiah said that God had planted Israel "as his choice vine" (Jeremiah 2:21). While the vine became a symbol of Israel as a nation, it was also used in the Scriptures as a sign of their sinfulness and lack of fidelity to God. Jesus calls himself the true vine he makes clear that no one can claim their spiritual inheritance through association with a particular people or bloodline. Rather, it is only through Jesus Christ that one can become grafted into the true "vineyard of the Lord”. The Vinedresser (God) has the task of managing the vines. As someone who has planted and nurtured and pruned vineyards I know that vines have two kinds of branches - those which bear fruit and those which don't. The non-bearing branches which become the dead wood must be carefully pruned back in order for the vine to conserve its strength for bearing good fruit. Jesus used this image to describe the kind of life he produces in those who are united with him - the fruit of "righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Romans 14:17). Jesus says there can be no fruit in our lives apart from him. The fruit he speaks of here is the fruit of the Holy Spirit (see Galatians 5:22-23). This parable is a useful tool in the Christian life and the Christian community in general. Sometimes we just keep on doing things without evaluating the fruit that comes from our activities as if repetition justifies somethings existence and priority. It is always good idea to have this parable in our minds as we go about our daily tasks and ask the question that the vinedresser would ask: “Is this bearing fruit- will this bear fruit?” This will help us discern what God may be saying about our priorities and help us focus on what is most important for our Church. The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 15

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: â€œLead me, Lordâ€?, Wesley. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. CHURCH LAW â€“ AVOIDING PROBLEMS IN YOUR PARISH Trinity College and the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne has organised a one-day course for all parish officers and anyone in a position of authority & responsibility within a parish to gain a good working knowledge of the legal framework which affects aspects of the work and ministry in a parish.
