Dear Parishioners, The disciples encounter Jesus although they do not recognise him and in their lively conversation, the disciples tell their unknown companion about Jesus. They were hoping that he would be the Messiah, the one who would overturn the rule of the Romans and once again make Israel respected amongst all nations. The Messiah would restore the kingship of David. With such expectations many were highly disappointed when Jesus died on the cross. Their dreams for the restoration of Israel died along with him; their spirits were crushed and their hopes for the future were now dashed. Jesus listens to the disciples as they walk and realises that now, as in his public ministry, his plan and mission have been misunderstood. Thus, the Lord explains to his companions all of what scripture said about him. It was necessary for Jesus to die. The Jews saw the passages in scripture which spoke of the greatness of the Messiah, but they missed or chose to forget the “Suffering Servant” passages in Isaiah, the one who offered himself to others, who gave no resistance to injury. Why, one might ask, were the disciples’ going to Emmaus? There are many possibilities — business, to visit others, or possibly to just “get away.” This latter idea has been suggested as the best possibility. These disciples’ journey to Emmaus was symbolic of their need to hide from their perceived reality that all hope was lost; without Jesus there was nothing else to do but run away from the situation. Thus, they went to Emmaus to escape from the sadness of their lives and their great disappointment. Yet, in the end, the disciples learned that if they possessed the correct attitude and were willing to persevere under a “cloud of unknowing,” confident that the Lord would present the light at the end of the tunnel, defeat would be transformed into victory. We are very much like Cleopas and the other disciple that day, in that we often walk or even run to our own Emmaus; we do whatever is necessary to escape from the disappointments and hurts of life. We cannot see, but we must believe, that despite the pain we share and even carry for others, the triumph of resurrection will be ours if we persevere. The methods of escape that we design are generally very subtle but sometimes more overt. For many, the place and method of escape is to crawl inside ourselves and keep the rest of the world that threatens us at bay. We fend off others who reach out, ignore possibilities and opportunities that come our way, and reject the affections of others, perceiving that these will only deepen our pain and alienation. We live in our own little world and convince ourselves that everything is fine. The reality, however, is that we are deeply wounded and feel defeated. We must break out, and recognise, as did Cleopas and his partner on the road, that Christ is present and will relieve the pain, heal the wound, and transform our sadness to joy, defeat into victory. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for all people and for the Church throughout the world. Each petition of intercession or thanksgiving concludes with, Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer. THE BAPTISM When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church. Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection. While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a child’s character. In this service of baptism we bring Chloe into God’s presence that she may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church. The Baptism party gathers around the font. The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit? A/ I do. Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Chloe for baptism? A/ I will. Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage her in the life and faith of the Christian community? A/ I will. Q/ As your life will be an example to Chloe, will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions? A/ I will. Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy? A/ I will. Priest to the congregation: You have heard our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Prayers and Blessing of the water [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Chloe may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in her where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom. An affirmation of faith Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming the faith of the church. Do you believe in God the Father? A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. (Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used in anointing to symbolize being chosen in God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in Christ.)
Live as a disciple of Christ; fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. ALL: Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. Priest: God has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. ALL: Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Priest: God has called you into his church. Merciful God, in your infinite love you have made a new covenant with us in Jesus Christ, promising to be our God and the God of our children. Enable all who are baptized in your name to live as your faithful people. Fulfil your promises for Chloe, we pray, and grant that she may grow in your faith and service. We pray for Kylie, Saul, Riley and William, that in your Spirit of wisdom, Chloe’s family may grow in your love, and their home share in the joy of your eternal kingdom. And we pray for Chloe’s godparents, Nicole, Cameron and Josette; enable them to share with their goddaughter what you have revealed to us of your love in your holy gospel. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. We pray together: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.
