Dear Parishioners, Jesus referred to the Temple as his Father’s house which was being made into a "den of robbers" (Mark 11:17). That is why he used force to expel the moneychangers. It wasn’t the buying or selling that was the issue- it was the extortion, the ripping off of people who had to change their money into Tyrian shekels from ordinary Roman money to pay the Temple tax and buy the sacrificial animals approved and required for sacrifice at the Temple. Tyrian shekels minted in the seaside town of Tyre bore the images of baal the Phoenician god. The irony of this activity was staggering, so it’s not surprising Jesus overturned the moneychanger’s tables. That is very different indeed from what our Trading Table is doing at the back of the Church today! The prophecy of Malachi foretold the coming of the Lord unexpectedly to his Temple to "purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, till they present right offerings to the Lord" (Malachi 3:1-4). Jesus' disciples recalled the words of Psalm 69: "Zeal for your house will consume me.” The Jewish authorities wanted proof that Jesus had divine authority to act as he did. Jesus replied that the sign God would give would be his resurrection: "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up". The Jews did not understand that the temple Jesus referred to was his own body. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus not only reconciles us with God, but he left us with his Holy Spirit to make us temples of the living God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) that we may offer God fitting worship and enjoy his presence both now and forever. The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul: the command of the Lord is true, and makes wise the simple. Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. 15 Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Then shall the Priest say to them that come to receive the Holy Communion, YE that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways; Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to Almighty God. Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.
BAPTISED CHRISTIANS WHO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION IN THEIR OWN CHURCH ARE INVITED TO SHARE COMMUNION WITH US. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind. 13
Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Let us pray in the words that our Lord Jesus Christ has taught us: OUR Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Access to the Memorial Garden, Church office and Vicarage is at the North end of the Church off Pakington Street. There are three alternatives for access - the stairs and a pathway, both outside the Church office and, during service time’s, through the Church. Vicarage Security Would everyone using the Vicarage please be aware that the front door is not selflocking – it only locks with the key, so please lock both doors as you leave. If you are in the Vicarage by yourself please at least snib the security door.
