Dear Parishioners, Jesus referred to the Temple as his Father’s house which was being made into a "den of robbers" (Mark 11:17). That is why he used force to expel the moneychangers. It wasn’t the buying or selling that was the issue- it was the extortion, the ripping off of people who had to change their money into Tyrian shekels from ordinary Roman money to pay the Temple tax and buy the sacrificial animals approved and required for sacrifice at the Temple. Tyrian shekels minted in the seaside town of Tyre bore the images of baal the Phoenician god. The irony of this activity was staggering, so it’s not surprising Jesus overturned the moneychanger’s tables. That is very different indeed from what our Trading Table is doing at the back of the Church today! The prophecy of Malachi foretold the coming of the Lord unexpectedly to his Temple to "purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, till they present right offerings to the Lord" (Malachi 3:1-4). Jesus' disciples recalled the words of Psalm 69: "Zeal for your house will consume me.” The Jewish authorities wanted proof that Jesus had divine authority to act as he did. Jesus replied that the sign God would give would be his resurrection: "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up". The Jews did not understand that the temple Jesus referred to was his own body. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus not only reconciles us with God, but he left us with his Holy Spirit to make us temples of the living God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) that we may offer God fitting worship and enjoy his presence both now and forever. Do you burn with zeal for the Lord's house? Yours in Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: Forty days and forty nights NEH 67

1 Forty days and forty nights Thou wast fasting in the wild; Forty days and forty nights Tempted, and yet undefiled.

4 And if Satan vexing sore, Flesh or spirit should assail, Thou, his Vanquisher before, Grant we may not faint nor fail.

2 Sunbeams scorching all the day, Chilly dewdrops nightly shed, Prowling beasts about thy way, Stones thy pillow, earth thy bed.

5 So shall we have peace divine; Holier gladness ours shall be; Round us, too, shall angels shine, Such as ministered to Thee.

3 Let us thine endurance share, And awhile from joys abstain, With thee watching unto prayer, Strong with Thee to suffer pain.

6 Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear, Ever constant by Thy side; That with Thee we may appear At the eternal Eastertide.

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you.

4

Sentence: God spoke these words and said, ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me.’

The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

5

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Kyrie eleison

(Dudman)

The Collect Lord our God, by your Holy Spirit write your commandments upon our hearts and grant us the wisdom and power of the cross, so that, cleansed from greed and selfishness, we may become a living temple of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 6

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Exodus 20:1-17 God spoke, and these were his words: 2 “I am the LORD your God who brought you out of Egypt, where you were slaves. 3 “Worship no god but me. 4 “Do not make for yourselves images of anything in heaven or on earth or in the water under the earth. 5 Do not bow down to any idol or worship it, because I am the LORD your God and I tolerate no rivals. I bring punishment on those who hate me and on their descendants down to the third and fourth generation. 6 But I show my love to thousands of generations[a] of those who love me and obey my laws. 7 “Do not use my name for evil purposes, for I, the LORD your God, will punish anyone who misuses my name. 8 “Observe the Sabbath and keep it holy. 9 You have six days in which to do your work, 10 but the seventh day is a day of rest dedicated to me. On that day no one is to work—neither you, your children, your slaves, your animals, nor the foreigners who live in your country. 11 In six days I, the LORD, made the earth, the sky, the seas, and everything in them, but on the seventh day I rested. That is why I, the LORD, blessed the Sabbath and made it holy. 12 “Respect your father and your mother, so that you may live a long time in the land that I am giving you. 13 “Do not commit murder. 14 “Do not commit adultery. 15 “Do not steal. 16 “Do not accuse anyone falsely. 17 “Do not desire another man's house; do not desire his wife, his slaves, his cattle, his donkeys, or anything else that he owns.” Response: Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to God.

Psalm: 19:7-14

The law of the Lord is perfect re | viving the | soul: the command of the Lord is true | and makes | wise the |simple. 8 The precepts of the Lord are right and re|joice the | heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure | and gives | light • to the |eyes. 7

The fear of the Lord is clean and en|dures for|ever: the judgements of the Lord are unchanging and | righteous | every|one. 10 More to be desired are they than gold even | much fine | gold: sweeter also than honey than the | honey that | drips • from the | comb. 9

Moreover by them is your | servant | taught: and in keeping them | there is | great re ward. 12 Who can know his own un|witting | sins?: O cleanse me | from my | secret | faults. 11

Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins lest they get the | mastery | over me: so I shall be clean and | innocent of | great of|fence. 14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable | in your | sight: O Lord my | strength and | my re|deemer. 13

Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men. 8

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:22-25 20-25 For consider, what have the philosopher, the writer and the critic of this world to show for all their wisdom? Has not God made the wisdom of this world look foolish? for it was after the world in its wisdom failed to know God, that he in his wisdom chose to save all who would believe by the “simple-mindedness” of the Gospel message. For the Jews ask for miraculous proofs and the Greeks an intellectual panacea, but all we preach is Christ crucified—a stumbling block to the Jews and sheer nonsense to the Gentiles, but for those who are called, whether Jews or Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. And this is really only natural, for God’s foolishness” is wiser than men, and his “weakness” is stronger than men. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, Thanks be to god. Gradual Hymn: Lord Jesus, think on me NEH 70

1. Lord Jesus, think on me, and purge away my sin; from earthborn passions set me free, and make me pure within.

4. Lord Jesus, think on me, nor let me go astray; through darkness and perplexity point thou the heavenly way.

2. Lord Jesus, think on me with care and woe opprest; let me thy loving servant be, and taste thy promised rest.

6. Lord Jesus, think on me, that, when the flood is past, I may the eternal brightness see, and share thy joy at last. Synesius of Cyrene c.375–430 tr. Allen William Chatfield 1808–96

3. Lord Jesus, think on me, amid the battle’s strife; in all my pain and misery be thou my health and life. 9

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you, and also with you. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 2 beginning at the 13th verse.

12-17 After

this incident, Jesus, accompanied by his mother, his brothers and his disciples, went down to Capernaum and stayed there a few days. The Jewish Passover was approaching and Jesus made the journey up to Jerusalem. In the Temple he discovered cattle and sheep dealers and pigeon-sellers, as well as money-changers sitting at their tables. So he made a rough whip out of rope and drove the whole lot of them, sheep and cattle as well, out of the Temple. He sent the coins of the money-changers flying and turned their tables upside down. Then he said to the pigeon-dealers, “Take those things out of here. Don’t you dare turn my Father’s house into a market!” His disciples remembered the scripture—‘Zeal for your house has eaten me up’ 18 As a result of this, the Jews said to him, “What sign can you give us to justify what you are doing?” 19 “Destroy this temple,” Jesus retorted, “and I will rebuild it in three days!” 20 To which the Jews replied, “This Temple took forty-six years to build, and you are going to rebuild it in three days?” 21-22 He was, in fact, speaking about the temple of his own body, and when he was raised from the dead the disciples remembered what he had said to them and that made them believe both the scripture and what Jesus had said. 23-25 While he was in Jerusalem at Passover-time, during the festivities many believed in him as they saw the signs that he gave. But Jesus, on his side, did not trust himself to them—for he knew them all. He did not need anyone to tell him what people were like: he understood human nature.

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

3. Christian, dost thou hear them, how they speak thee fair? "Always fast and vigil? Always watch and prayer?" Christian, answer boldly: "While I breathe I pray!" Peace shall follow battle, night shall end in day.

2. Christian, dost thou feel them, how they work within, striving, tempting, luring, goading into sin? Christian, never tremble; never be downcast; smite them by the virtue, of the Lenten fast.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “To Thee, O Lord, Rachmaninov. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

Final Hymn: I heard the voice of Jesus say NEH 376

1. I heard the voice of Jesus say, 'Come unto me and rest; lay down, thou weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast.' I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad; I found in him a resting-place, and he has made me glad.

3. I heard the voice of Jesus say, 'I am this dark world's light; look unto me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright.' I looked to Jesus, and I found in him my star, my sun; and in that light of life I'll walk till travelling days are done. Horatius Bonar 1808-89

2. I heard the voice of Jesus say, 'Behold, I freely give the living water; thirsty one, stoop down and drink and live.' I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him.

18
