Dear Parishioners, The leper who came to Jesus did something quite remarkable. He approached Jesus confidently and humbly, expecting that Jesus could and would heal him and make him whole again. Normally a leper would be stoned or at least warded off if he tried to come near a rabbi. Jesus not only grants the man his request, but he demonstrates the personal love, compassion, and tenderness of God in his physical touch. The medical knowledge of his day would have regarded such contact as grave risk for incurring infection. Jesus met the man’s misery with compassion and tender kindness. He communicated the love and mercy of God in a sign that spoke more eloquently than words. He touched the man and made him clean – not only physically but spiritually as well. Paul the Apostle tells us that "God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us" (Romans 5:5). The Holy Spirit sets us free to love as God loves – with mercy, kindness, goodness, and compassionate care. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: 2 Kings 5:1-14 Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man and in high favour with his master, because by him the Lord had given victory to Aram. The man, though a mighty warrior, suffered from leprosy. 2 Now the Arameans on one of their raids had taken a young girl captive from the land of Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. 3 She said to her mistress, “If only my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.” 4 So Naaman[c] went in and told his lord just what the girl from the land of Israel had said. 5 And the king of Aram said, “Go then, and I will send along a letter to the king of Israel.” He went, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten sets of garments. 6 He brought the letter to the king of Israel, which read, “When this letter reaches you, know that I have sent to you my servant Naaman, that you may cure him of his leprosy. 7 When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, “Am I God, to give death or life, that this man sends word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? Just look and see how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me.” 8 But when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had 1

torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king, “Why have you torn your clothes? Let him come to me, that he may learn that there is a prophet in Israel.” 9 So Naaman came with his horses and chariots, and halted at the entrance of Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go, wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored and you shall be clean.” 11 But Naaman became angry and went away, saying, “I thought that for me he would surely come out, and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy! 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them, and be clean?” He turned and went away in a rage. 13 But his servants approached and said to him, “Father, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more, when all he said to you was, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” 14 So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; his flesh was restored like the flesh of a young boy, and he was clean. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for all people and for the Church throughout the world. Each petition of intercession or thanksgiving concludes with, Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer. THE BAPTISM

When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church. Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection. While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a childâ€™s character. In this service of baptism we bring Georgia and Charlotte into Godâ€™s presence that they may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.

The Baptism party gathers around the font. The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit? A/ I do. Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Georgia and Charlotte for baptism? A/ I will. Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage them in the life and faith of the Christian community? A/ I will. Q/ As your life will be an example to Georgia and Charlotte, will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions? A/ I will. Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy? A/ I will. Priest to the congregation: You have heard our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Prayers and Blessing of the water [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Georgia and Charlotte may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in them where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom. And now we give you thanks that you have called Georgia and Charlotte to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. + Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that all who are baptized may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

An affirmation of faith Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming the faith of the church. Do you believe in God the Father? A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, Godâ€™s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? A/: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN. 15

I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ’s own forever. (Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used in anointing to symbolize being chosen in God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in Christ.)

Live as a disciple of Christ; fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. ALL: Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. Priest: God has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. ALL: Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Priest: God has called you into his church. ALL: We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God.

Prayers for the child, parents and godparents Merciful God, in your infinite love you have made a new covenant with us in Jesus Christ, promising to be our God and the God of our children. Enable all who are baptized in your name to live as your faithful people. Fulfil your promises for Georgia and Charlotte, we pray, and grant that they may grow in your faith and service. We pray for Sarah and Justin, Amanda, Timothy and Madison, that in your Spirit of wisdom, Georgia and Charlotte’s families may grow in your love, and their homes share in the joy of your eternal kingdom. And we pray for Georgia and Charlotte’s godparents, Claire, Rodney and Simone, William and Suzanne; enable them to share with their goddaughters what you have revealed to us of your love in your holy gospel. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant}

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: â€œBe still for the presence of the Lordâ€? Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. The next trading table will be 4th March. Access to the Church: Please note that until further notice, all access to the Church will be through the Pakington Street entrance. There will be no access through the main gates or main doors. The plumbers will be working on gas and water connections to the Parish Centre and Devco is working on the eventual access from the forecourt to the café terrace. Access to the Memorial Garden, Church office and Vicarage: is via the back of the church. Should you have difficulty going down the stairs outside the Church office and need to come to the Office, Memorial Garden or Vicarage during the week, please contact Brenda in the office to arrange access via the Pakington St Church entrance – the office is open from 9am-12pm each week day. On Sunday’s during service time’s access will be through the Church. Please note we do not have wheelchair access to the Memorial Garden or Vicarage. Vicarage Security Would everyone using the Vicarage please be aware that the front door is not selflocking – it only locks with the key, so please lock both doors as you leave. If you are in the Vicarage by yourself please at least snib the security door. Why are the next few weeks Septuagesima, Sexagesima and Quinquagesima Sunday? As the Church moves through the Christian Year from Epiphany to Lent we pass through three Sundays which have to modern ears strange titles: Septuagesima, Sexagesima and Quinquagesima, which are in fact three Latin words indicating how far away we are from Easter - that is, 70, 60 & 50 days respectively. From the fifth century after Christ these Sundays emerged as a preparatory cycle for Lent in the Western Church. They appear in our Australian Lectionary and the Book of Common Prayer (1662). The Gesimas serve to place worshippers today in a long tradition of regarding Lent to be so important as a preparation for Easter, the Feast of Feasts, as to require for itself a preliminary preparation, so are a preparation for the Preparation. Thus in these three weeks the faithful begin to turn their minds to Lent, its solemnity and how they will keep it, in joining with their Lord in his fasting, meditating, praying and resisting temptation in the wilderness.
