Update on Parish Centre by Alan Wilson I write this on the evening of February 15th. The tender process for the Parish Centre closed at 5.00pm this afternoon.

All six of the builders we approached have responded.

Our architect, Atelier Wagner, will undertake a thorough review of the tenders and the Parish Building Committee and Diocese will confer when this has been done.

Based only on the raw total figures provided by the builders, we have one quote which is close to the revised project estimate provided by our Quantity Surveyor, one which is substantially above the figure, and four in a tight cluster around the mid-point between these two quotes.

Atelier Wagner’s preliminary view is that with negotiation and some adjustment to the specification, we should achieve an acceptable price point and be able to enter into a contract. We have a lot of work to do before we get to contract, but we are undoubtedly on the path to seeing construction underway!

More good news is that CitiPower has reached a decision over the electricity

supply to the Parish Centre. They were originally proposing a sub-station arrangement (~$120,000 cost to us) but have now decided that we can be supplied by a “pillar” in the area behind the Church, at a cost of ~$12,000. This is a great outcome, not only in terms of the significantly lower cost but also in the reduced footprint required around the installation.

The scheduled replacement of the switchboard in the Jubilee Hall has been postponed until a later date, as further investigation with the power disconnected showed that this is a more complex job than the electricians expected.

Of interest is the forthcoming auction of the ‘car park’ block which we sold in August 2015. Our buyer has had plans drawn for six townhouses and has permits in place. This is up for auction in early March. If the new buyer starts building at the same time we do it is going to be very busy in our little patch of Kew!

A bequest is an instruction within your Will that reserves part of your estate for a particular beneficiary. Bequests are an important source of funding for entities like us, and everyone in the Parish should consider whether they might make a provision for Holy Trinity in their Will. Leaving a bequest is one of the most personal ways you can support the Parish; and if you desire can be made for a specific purpose.

Such a gift will be of special importance to the Parish regardless of the value involved.

The Vicar’s Letter Dear Parishioners, I think anyone who has tried to teach a class or talk to a group has experienced something like this. You have your presentation all worked out. Then as you begin, there is always this one student, this one character who interrupts you and begs to differ with what you have to say. “BUT, what about this? What about that?” At first you may be pleased that there is actually someone who is paying attention and is giving what you have to say some thought, even if they beg to differ with you. But the interruptions persist. Their questions become an irritation. Suddenly what you thought you had under control is rapidly becoming chaos.

Likewise, many of us think we have Easter all worked out and everything is under our control. Then we miss the fact that this day is essentially a celebration of the unexpected, unnatural, and uncontrollable. Today is God’s great “nevertheless,” “however,” “on the other hand,” “to the contrary notwithstanding” ... to a life we thought was well planned and under our control.

Isn’t it interesting how most in this world prefer to call this day “Easter” and not “The Resurrection Of Our Lord”? You are not going to be able to go into the local supermarket and buy “Resurrection Of Our Lord Chocolate Rabbits.” There are no “Resurrection Of Our Lord Sales” for this week. The name “Easter” comes from a name used by the ancient nature religions to refer to the season of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. As a result, our society finds it easy to celebrate this day with eggs and bunnies and flowers, all those symbols of new life that everyone can understand in Autumn?

For much of the church’s history there have been those who have tried to make the Christian faith less offensive by reinterpreting the resurrection of Christ to make it easier to swallow. Some ask, “Is it really necessary to believe that Easter took place to be a Christian?” After all, most Australians believe they will live on automatically after death in some shape or form.

Why add the unnecessary baggage of belief that Christ was raised from the dead?

And that story of the empty tomb? Was that not just a symbol that the writers of the gospels made up to affirm the fact that love is stronger than hate and life stronger than death? Is it really necessary to believe in the bodily resurrection of our Lord?

Is not resurrection impossible from the point of view of modern science? So is not the New Testament story of the empty tomb simply a symbol of the continuing spiritual presence of Jesus whom the disciples felt to be with them after he died?

Surely that is just a pre-scientific belief that we can now discard as primitive and superstitious!

If it happened, fine. So this wonderful event happened in the distant past but it does not have anything to do with how we live our lives now. Maybe it assures us that when we die, we will go to heaven. But in as far as this world goes and how to survive in this dog-eat-dog world now, it is a nice thought but ultimately irrelevant.

Saint Paul in I Corinthians 15:19-26 has a different point of view. If Christ has not been raised from the dead, if we have only hoped in Christ and his body is still dead in the grave somewhere, then we ought to be pitied for being such naive fools. Then we are still stuck with our sin. Then we are doomed to the cemetery with no hope of life ever being anything else than dog-eat-dog, grab all you can, eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die ... and that’s it.

But ... and what a BIG BUT it is. It is God’s big but, God’s protest against this world as it is. It is God’s way of reversing the inevitable: irreversible and inexorable. “But,” says Paul, “in fact Christ has been raised from the dead!” The ironclad law of cause and effect, the ironclad law created by God himself, “that the wages of sin is death,” has been broken and shattered by the resurrection of Christ. And as a result, the world is different. Now we can be the ones who raise our hands and ask those embarrassing questions of those who thought they ran the world. Now when the rest of the world assumes that you only go around once in the life so grab all you can, that you get what you pay for and there is mercy for no one, we can beg to differ.

We can join Paul in declaring, “BUT ... Christ has been raised from the dead.” A new kind of world has now begun!

The terrible Victorian Bush Fires of 2009 exemplified the ability of people to overcome adversity which was well observed in a report to the Victorian Government: “Community recovery after the February 2009 Victorian bushfires: a rapid review An Evidence Check Review brokered by the Sax Institute for the Victorian Government Department of Health.” In this document it saw occasionally the real value of faith based communities in assisting the healing process and I encourage you to read it.

However I found this whole document overall disregarding toward Christianity. On the other hand, maybe the writers were genuinely puzzled by the phenomenon of vibrant Christian faith in the face of tragedy. The rebuilding and resurrection of Kinglake Anglican Church from the ashes with local community support, business donations from local builders and BHP into a beautiful new church symbolises what can be done and is a testament to many individual acts of faith in response to that devastation.

But ... and what a BIG BUT it is ... Jesus lives! He is not to be found among the dead artefacts and dusty memories of history. He is alive! He is here now ready to greet you in the waters of the font and the bread and wine.

You may have difficulty believing ... not just the resurrection of our Lord but how God can continue to love us in the midst of the mess that is our life. But you read this because you knew that here you would once again hear that unnatural, unexpected BUT. You read longing to hear that this world and our life are not inexorably, irreversibly, and inevitably bound for death.

And we were not disappointed. “BUT ... in fact Christ has been raised from the dead!”

There is only one way to respond to that good news. For the last six weeks we haven’t been able to shout it, let alone say it.

But ... because of God’s BIG BUT, we can. Let us say it. Let us shout it: Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Clergy stress and burnout by Leonie Bird who is currently undertaking post graduate research into clergy stress and burnout in two major religious denominations.

The 2017 February edition of The Melbourne Anglican featured an article dealing with the growing phenomena of the bullying of clergy. There is ample research evidence that supports the views expressed in this article. It is no exaggeration to say that parish ministry may place parish vicars in an unsafe system of work. They are in the category of workers who are “at serious risk” of workplace injury through stress and burnout. The number of priests who are forced to withdraw from ministry due to stress and burnout is dramatically increasing. There is credible evidence that unremitting exposure to intrusive, unrealistic criticism and expectations by parishes generally and zealous critical parishioners, in particular, constitutes and unacceptable workplace risk to |ministers and priests.

Maureen Minor, a leading Australian expert in clergy stress and burnout has stated ” the consequences of burnout can be devastating, and include poor physical health, reduced job performance, higher turnover intentions, conflicts with colleagues, declining professional commitment, reduced self esteem, and poorer overall life satisfaction.

In 2009 researchers (Schaefer and Jacobson) found that there are twelve common causes of burnout including, unrealistic parish expectations, unsafe work/life balance, multi-task complexity, conflict between theological focus and financial imperatives, personal financial pressures, counter cultural work demands, inherent ambiguity associated with volunteer organisations, ongoing physical stress and fatigue.

Every Anglican congregation and parish should seriously examine its culture, organisation and administration to realistically assess whether the role of vicar involves an unacceptable risk of personal injury to its incumbent vicar.

IN MEMORIAM JOAN EDWARDS “A Compassionate Life”

Joan Edwards died on 2nd February 2017 after suffering a severe stroke. For more than 70 years she had been a long serving faithful member of the Holy Trinity congregation.

On Sunday 12th February 2017 a service was conducted to commemorate and celebrate Joan’s life of faithful service to her family, the Anglican church and the community at large. The commemorative open air Anglican service was held at Warrac Stud – the property of Wayne and Rachel Huydak (nee Edwards) at Seville in the Yarra Valley. In a simple service, conducted according to Joan’s express wishes, her ashes were interred at the foot of a tree overlooking the Yarra Valley. The service was attended by a large number of family friends and fellow parishioners.

Joan was born in Kew on 10th September 1933 and lived with her parents and sister Gwen Brown at 36 Hartington Street East Kew. She attended East Kew primary school and completed her secondary education at Box Hill Technical School becoming qualified as a typist and stenographer. Joan and her sister were the daughters of Olive Louise Robinson and Gregory McLaren who themselves were members of the Holy Trinity parish. George McLaren had been the superintendent at the Holy Trinity Sunday School. Both Joan and her sister Gwen attended that Sunday school. Joan later taught at the Sunday school and she eventually become its superintendent. For many years Joan regularly attended the Holy Trinity Saturday evening service, making a particular effort to welcome newcomers to the parish. At some time George served on the Holy Trinity vestry.

Joan met George Edwards in the early 1960’s. They were married at Holy Trinity in 1969 on All Saints Day and lived in Box Hill. They had two children (Rachel and Paul) who were baptised at Holy Trinity. They have four loving grandchildren. They had been married for 47 years.

Joan’s life was marked by an exemplary dedication to voluntary community service. She and George dedicated themselves to serve a number of organisations including St Paul’s Kew, the Talking Newspaper, and the Box Hill Hospital Cancer Support Group. She was a member of the AMSU (Retired Members Division). (George having been a metalworker) More recently she was a member of the Yarra Valley Probus Club and the “Yarra Valley Pink Ladies” raising resources to support women suffering from cancer in the Yarra Valley region. She also undertook tasks at St Pauls Anglican Church in Seville before her health started to decline. She was awarded the Centenary Medal and the Caroline Chisolm Award for services to the community in the electorate of Chisholm.

In all her life’s work for family, friends and charitable causes Joan lived her theology of loving God and loving others as she herself would wish to be loved. Her legacy stands as an example to us of what life could be like, lived as a one of God’s faithful servants. Her legacy of love, compassion, and enduring faith remains as an inspiration to all those whose lives she touched and particularly the parishioners of Holy Trinity Kew.

PHILIP HADWEN 8-9-1965 ~ 26-1-2017 The Address by the Rev’d Robert Newton at the Memorial Service on 8th February 2017.

We give thanks for the life of Philip Hadwen and offer our prayers and condolences to family, carers and friends at this time. In his book No Man is an Island (1) Thomas Merton made the thought provoking comment that we do not live more fully merely by doing more, seeing more, tasting more, experiencing more. What some of us need to discover is that we will not begin to live more fully until we have the courage to do and see and taste and experience much less. So easily we divide the world into people with a disability and people like ourselves. Is it fear which is at the root of such a tendency? In recent years, thank God, there has been a welcome discovery of the value of the people with a disability in our society, of their inestimable value as people, of their real contribution to our community and perhaps of the distinctive message which they have for all of us. Certainly Philip was one such person by his presence.

Philip was a faithful member of Holy Trinity Kew accompanied by his mother Dorothy faithfully Sunday after Sunday and it was clear that the beauty of our worship was working at deep level for him. At our recent Nine Lessons and Carols service for Christmas I am told he was transfixed in his gaze upon the choir and organ for over an hour—what was running through his mind we will never know, suffice to say “Worshipping the Lord in the Beauty of Holiness” profoundly attracted and affected him.

People with a disability show us that we cannot judge people by outward appearances and their material contribution to society. I think especially of St Paul who had his thorn in the flesh (epilepsy? malaria?). Not surprisingly he begged the Lord to take it away from him but he received the answer: 'My grace is sufficient for you, for in weakness power reaches perfection' (2 Cor 12:9). 'In the evening of life,' said St Augustine, 'we are judged on love.' We do not choose our talents, our disabilities, our temperaments. But rather each person is chosen in God's love to show aspects of his love to the world, to grow and to help others grow towards the perfection of love. Paul saw the whole universe and not just people as imperfect, as groaning towards a fulfilment of love which will give meaning to everything which we now suffer. Philip reminds us that no person is an island, that people need each other, need opportunities to serve others. We help one another even by giving people opportunities to serve us, to show love to us. As the blind poet Milton realised, we also can serve God who only stand and wait.

The annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was again a success, with a big choir announcing the Christmas season enthusiastically before a full congregation. The preparations for the carols service take much effort from the choristers, with a confident and joyous sound the result.

We are finally ready to order the new set of robes for the choir, having taken all measurements and having found a supplier. We look forward to these being ready for the choir to wear soon!

On March 13 at 3:15pm, the Kew Philharmonic Chamber Choir will present a choral evensong at Holy Trinity, led by Rev’d Robert Holland. This will be the final stop in a Kew Festival day of spirituality. All are welcome to attend the evensong. The setting, psalm and anthem will be by Purcell. New Anglicare Supporters’ Network by Marg Kelly

Did you know that Anglicare Victoria is the largest provider of social welfare in Victoria and larger than the Salvation Army?

Anglicare Victoria is active in promoting change, especially with regard to the youth justice problem, and to solving the homeless challenge. A recent rent affordability snapshot by Anglicare Victoria shows that spaces in corridors of a house are being advertised as rental sleeping areas.

In Melbourne even these types of ‘rentals of last resort’ are unaffordable for single people, particularly those on income support.

The Homeless Support Services Unit serves meals to homeless people and offers emergency food and clothing,

phone cards, washing and showering facilities plus referrals to other areas of need.

Anglicare has many programs to help families in crisis. Some examples are Parentzone programs in r egional Victoria – parents learn new skills and strategies to enable them to parent more effectively.

This quote is from the December 2016 Newsletter IMAGINE – Sita came to Anglicare Victoria because she wanted to “stop showing her anger with the kids” and she confided she had been shouting and smacking her children when they would not follow instructions. Through the Parentzone group program, Sita learnt new skills and strategies to deal with her own feelings, which led to a more calm and consistent approach when dealing with her children. She began using family meetings, rules, consequences and praise as positive parenting tactics.

Sita’s evaluation of the program left her “really impressed” and she stopped resorting to the “shouting, anger and smacking”, which in turn made her relationship with her children closer.

The Boys Will be Men and Peaceful Warriors Programs mentor socially disadvantaged boys, and guide them through adolescence.

Financial counselling pr ovides fr ee confidential assistance to Victorians in financial difficulty.

Victims of crime can obtain many form of support including counselling, advocacy, court support and practical help.

While these programs are Government funded, to be really effective they rely on donations.

There are already some people at Holy Trinity interested in being part of a local Anglicare Supporters’ Network. If you are interested in learning more about such a group please come along when we meet over a cup of coffee. We will publish details of this first meeting in the pew sheet so keep your eyes open or ring me for details, see number later.

We would like to raise some money for Anglicare while having enjoyable and interesting times that will allow us to foster community in the HTK family.

Sadly it will not become a feature of this or future editions as the cost would be too great.

It was accidental—I printed it as I had always done, not knowing that the new photocopier I was using for the first time needed a specific instruction regarding colour (the old machine had no colour facility). I went and did other things and didn’t notice until the printing was finished.

A big thank you once more to all the people who help me in various ways.

I think we will soon see the begin-

ning of the major works needed to build our new parish centre. We must be patient and bear with the disruption and inconveniences believing that it will all be worthwhile when we see, and can use, our new facilities.

I have no specific time in mind for giving up as editor but I have been doing it for more than 20 years and am feeling stale.
