Welcome to Holy Trinity, where services have been held, in this church, since 1863. We pray that you will feel the presence of God and know his blessings in your life You are invited to Morning Tea after today’s service in the Vicarage. CHURCH TOILETS CURRENTLY LOCATED IN VICARAGE Crèche Area: is in the transept near the pulpit. Parents and children are welcome to enter by the church aisle or by the side door.

Dear Parishioners, John the Baptist connects the Old and New Testament as the last of the Old Testament prophets who points the way to the Messiah and as the first of the New Testament witnesses and martyrs. He is the messenger who prepares the way for Jesus: Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). John foretold what the Messiah would come to accomplish our rescue from captivity to sin and our adoption as daughters and sons of God. Do you recognise who you are in Christ? The Lord Jesus has come to restore us to friendship with God and he has made us citizens of heaven - his eternal kingdom of concord and justice. John was supreme amongst the prophets, yet he lived as a modest and faithful servant of God. He pointed others selflessly to Jesus, the true Messiah and Saviour of the world. The Christian church from the earliest of times has given John many titles of honour which denote the importance of his mission: Witness of the Lord, Herald of Christ, Voice of the Word, Precursor of Truth, Crown of the Prophets, Forerunner of the Redeemer, Preparer of Salvation and Light of the Martyrs. Do you show others to Jesus Christ by the example and witness of your life? Yours In Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: Ye holy angels bright NEH 475

1. Ye holy angels bright, who wait at God’s right hand, or through the realms of light fly at your Lord’s command, assist our song, for else the theme too high doth seem for mortal tongue.

3. Ye saints who toil below, adore your heavenly King, and onward as ye go some joyful anthem sing; take what he gives and praise him still through good or ill, who ever lives!

2. You blessèd souls at rest, who ran this earthly race, and now, from sin released, behold the Saviour’s face, God’s praises sound, as in his sight with sweet delight ye do abound.

4. My soul, bear thou thy part: triumph in God above, and with a well-tuned heart sing thou the songs of love; Let all thy days till life shall end, Whate’er he send, Be filled with praise. Richard Baxter 1615–91 and John Hampden Gurney 1802–62.

Invocation:

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. 3

Sentence: O people in Zion who dwell at Jerusalem; you shall weep no more. The Lord will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; he will cause his majestic voice to be heard. Isaiah 30.19a,30b

The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

4

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ~ The Sunday School now departs to the Memorial Chapel. Any children in the congregation are welcome to join them. ~

Kyrie eleison

The Collect Let us pray [that God will fill us with joy at the coming of Christ.] Lord God, may we, your people, who look forward to the birthday of Christ experience the joy of salvation and celebrate that feast with love and thanksgiving. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Isaiah 61.1-7 The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favour, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion—to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory. 4 They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. 5 Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, foreigners shall till your land and dress your vines; 6 but you shall be called priests of the LORD, you shall be named ministers of our God; you shall enjoy the wealth of the nations, and in their riches you shall glory. 7 Because their shame was double, and dishonour was proclaimed as their lot, therefore they shall possess a double portion; everlasting joy shall be theirs. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD 6

Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5.16-24 16 Rejoice

always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise the words of prophets, 21 but test everything; hold fast to what is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil. 23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: Hark the glad sound! The Saviour comes NEH 6

1. Hark, the glad sound! The Saviour comes, the Saviour promised long! Let every heart prepare a throne, and every voice a song. 2. He comes the prisoners to release, in Satan’s bondage held; the gates of brass before Him burst, the iron fetters yield.

3. He comes the broken heart to bind, the bleeding soul to cure, and with the treasures of His grace enrich the humble poor. 4 Our glad Hosannas, Prince of Peace, Thy welcome shall proclaim; and heaven’s eternal arches ring with Thy beloved Name.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA Sung by Choir & Congregation

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 1 beginning at the 6th verse.

6 There

was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 19 This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ 20 He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, ‘I am not the Messiah.’[a] 21 And they asked him, ‘What then? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’ 22 Then they said to him, ‘Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?’ 23 He said, ‘I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, “Make straight the way of the Lord”’, as the prophet Isaiah said. 24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25 They asked him, ‘Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah,[b] nor Elijah, nor the prophet?’ 26 John answered them, ‘I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, 27 the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.’ 28 This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

SERMON (copy of sermon available at back of church and a selection of sermons, some current and past, available on web) The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 11

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant}

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread.

The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Jesus Christ the Apple Tree,, arr. Bullard. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

17

Final Hymn: The advent of our God NEH 14

1. The advent of our God with eager prayers we greet, and singing haste upon the road his glorious gift to meet.

4. On clouds of dazzling light, As Judge he comes again, His scattered people to unite, With him in heaven to reign.

2. The everlasting Son scorns not the Virgin’s womb; that we from bondage may be won He bears a bondsman’s doom.

5. Let evil flee away Ere that great hour shall dawn, Let this old Adam day by day The new Man all put on.

3. Daughter of Sion, rise To meet thy lowly King; Let not thy stubborn heart despise The peace he comes to bring.

6. Praise to the incarnate Son who comes to set us free, with Father and with Spirit One, to all eternity.

18
