Dear Parishioners, John the Baptist's life was fired by one all-consuming desire - to point others to Jesus Christ and to the advent of his kingdom. John’s message was similar to the message of the Old Testament prophets who reproached the people of God for their infidelity and who tried to rouse true repentance in them. In the Gospel of Luke Jesus tells us that John the Baptist was more than a prophet (7:26). John was the voice of the Comforter who is coming (John 1:23; Isaiah 40:1-3). John's baptism was for repentance - turning away from sin and taking on a new way of life according to God's word. Our baptism in Jesus Christ by water and the Spirit results in a new birth and entry into God's kingdom as his beloved. (John 3:5). His word and sacrament has power to change and transform our lives that we may be lights illuminating a path for others to Christ. Like John the Baptist, we too are called to give witness to the light and truth of Jesus Christ. Do you point others to Christ in the way you live, work, and speak? Yours In Christ, Fr Robert

Invocation:
Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.
Greeting:
The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU.
(see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: [Hear the words of the prophet Isaiah:] Shake yourself from the dust, says the Lord, arise, O captive Jerusalem; loose the bonds from your neck, O captive daughter of Zion. Isaiah 52.2 The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. Kyrie eleison: Lord have mercy: R/: Lord have mercy Christ have mercy: R/: Christ have mercy Lord have mercy: R/: Lord have mercy 4
The Collect God of power and mercy, open our hearts in welcome. Remove the things that hinder us from receiving Christ with joy, so that we may share his wisdom and become one with him when he comes in glory, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Isaiah 40.1-11 40 Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins. 3 A voice cries out: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. 5 Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.’ 6 A voice says, ‘Cry out!’ And I said, ‘What shall I cry?’ All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. 7 The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it; surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. 9 Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, ‘Here is your God!’ 10 See, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD
6
Psalm: 85 8 I will hear what the Lord God will speak: for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful ones, whose hearts are turned to him. 9 Truly his salvation is near to those that fear him: and his glory shall dwell in our land. 10 Mercy and truth are met together: righteousness and peace have kissed each other; 11 Truth shall flourish out of the earth: and righteousness shall look down from heaven. 12 The Lord will also give us all that is good: and our land shall yield its plenty. 13 For righteousness shall go before him: and tread the path before his feet.
Second Reading: 2 Peter 3.8-14 8 But
do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. 11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? 13 But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. 14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD 7
WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 1 beginning at the 1st verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 1 The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, ‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; 3 the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight”’, 4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed, ‘The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’ Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord, PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
SERMON - followed by a short time for reflection (copy of sermon available at back of church and a selection available on web)

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
9
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for all people and for the Church throughout the world. Each petition of intercession or thanksgiving concludes with, Lord in your mercy, HEAR OUR PRAYER. We pray for: all who work for peace and justice. We pray for: Diocese of Western North Carolina, Episcopal Church, USA; Ministry to the Defence Force; Lay Ministry; St John the Evangelist, Epping; Holy Trinity, Hampton Park – Parish Visit; St Matthias, Richmond North – Pastoral Visit; All Saints’ Greensborough – Episcopal visit; St John’s Diamond Creek – confirmation service. We pray for our ministry team: Robert, Robert, Helen, Pam and Leonie, for Rick and Michael (with responsibility for the TGS congregation), for the choir and Sunday School, and all who serve within the parish. We pray for our Archbishop Philip and Bishop Genieve.
Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith We may by your grace receive, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
10
Jesus said: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you. John 13.34 [Let us pray] We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution [Celebrant] Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread.
Agnus Dei We pray together: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind. 13
Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

Vicarage Security Would everyone using the Vicarage please be aware that the front door is not selflocking – it only locks with the key. We have had an incident this week (20/11) where an intruder was found inside the Vicarage. The front door was locked and there was no sign of forced entry. We believe that the intruder entered the Vicarage whilst parishioners were inside with the door unlocked, and then hid until they left, locking the door behind them. If you are in the Vicarage by yourself we recommend that you at least snib the security door. Fortunately the intruder was not violent and left the premises when asked to do so, but this is a reminder that care needs to be taken. Christmas Flowers If you would like to contribute money towards the Christmas Day flower arrangements, please either speak with Elaine Hutchinson (9830 2315) or contact the Church office (9853 7158) by 17th December. HAVE YOU CONSIDERED STUDYING THEOLOGY? You can study theology at Trinity College Theological College in Parkville. A range of courses at all levels is available, including an online Diploma.
