Dear Parishioners, The prophet Isaiah tells us that God will surely reward those who wait for his visitation: "From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides you, who works for those who wait for him" (Isaiah 64:4). Our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, has entrusted us with his gifts and graces (his abundant favours and blessings). He expects us to make good use of the gifts and resources he gives us for his glory and for the benefit of helping and blessing others as well. He does not want us to use the present time we have here on earth in idleness or wasted living. He has work for us to do - loving, honouring, and serving him and loving, honouring, and serving our families, neighbours, and communities as well. Our theme for Advent Sunday today is about watching. The kind of watch Jesus has in mind is not an inactive "wait and see what happens" kind of attitude to life. The Lord urges us to be vigilant and active in prayer that his "kingdom may come" and that his "will be done on earth as it is in heaven". We are not only to watch for Christ, but also to watch with Christ. The Lord wants us to have our spirit and minds set on him and his word. He wants us to be ready for his action and grace in our lives and in our world. Those who "wait" and “watch for the Lord will not be disappointed. He will surely come with his grace and redeeming help. Do you watch for the Lord's action in your life with eager faith and with joyful hope? Yours In Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: Come thou long expected Jesus TiS 272 (Tune: TiS 136)

1. Come, thou long-expected Jesus, born to set thy people free, from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee.

3. Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a king, born to reign in us for ever, now thy gracious kingdom bring.

2. Israel’s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art; dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.

4. By thine own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone; by thine all-sufficient merit raise us to thy glorious throne. Charles Wesley 1707–88

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Sentence: To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul, O my God, in you I trust, let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me; let none that wait for you be put to shame. Psalm 25.1-3a

The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

5

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Kyrie eleison

(Dudman)

6

The Collect Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness and put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came among us in great humility; that on the last day, when he comes again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Isaiah 63:15-64:12 15 LORD, look upon us from heaven, where you live in your holiness and glory. Where is your great concern for us? Where is your power? Where are your love and compassion? Do not ignore us. 16 You are our father. Our ancestors Abraham and Jacob do not acknowledge us, but you, LORD, are our father, the one who has always rescued us. 17 Why do you let us stray from your ways? Why do you make us so stubborn that we turn away from you? Come back, for the sake of those who serve you, for the sake of the people who have always been yours. 18 We, your holy people, were driven out by our enemies for a little while; they trampled down your sanctuary. 19 You treat us as though you had never been our ruler, as though we had never been your people. 64 Why don't you tear the sky open and come down? The mountains would see you and shake with fear. 2 They would tremble like water boiling over a hot fire. Come and reveal your power to your enemies, and make the nations tremble at your presence! 3 There was a time when you came and did terrifying things that we did not expect; the mountains saw you and shook with fear. 4 No one has ever seen or heard of a God like you, who does such deeds for those who put their hope in him. 5 You welcome those who find joy in doing what is right, those who remember how you want them to live. You were angry with us, but we went on sinning; in spite of your great anger we have continued to do wrong since ancient times. 6 All of us have been sinful; even our best actions are filthy 7

through and through. Because of our sins we are like leaves that wither and are blown away by the wind. 7 No one turns to you in prayer; no one goes to you for help. You have hidden yourself from us and have abandoned us because of our sins. 8 But you are our father, LORD. We are like clay, and you are like the potter. You created us, 9 so do not be too angry with us or hold our sins against us forever. We are your people; be merciful to us. 10 Your sacred cities are like a desert; Jerusalem is a deserted ruin, 11 and our Temple, the sacred and beautiful place where our ancestors praised you, has been destroyed by fire. All the places we loved are in ruins. 12 LORD, are you unmoved by all this? Are you going to do nothing and make us suffer more than we can endure? Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 80.1-7

Hear O Shepherd of Israel, you that led | Joseph· like a | flock: you that are enthroned upon the cherubim | shine | out in | glory; 2 Before Ephraim, Benjamin | and Man|asseh: stir up your | power and | come to | save us. 1

Restore us again O | Lord of | hosts: show us the light of your countenance | and we | shall be | saved. 4 O Lord | God of | hosts: how long will you be | angry· at your | people’s | prayer? 3

You have fed them with the | bread of | tears: and given them tears to | drink in | good | measure. 6 You have made us the victim | of our | neighbours: and our | enemies | laugh us to | scorn. 5

2nd half of Chant: 7 Restore us again O | Lord of | hosts: show us the light of your countenance | and we | shall be | saved. Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 1 1-3 Paul, commissioned by the will of God as a messenger of Jesus Christ, and Sosthenes, a Christian brother, to the church of God at Corinth—to those whom Christ has made holy, who are called to be God’s men and women, to all true believers in Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours—grace and peace be to you from God the Father and the Lord, Jesus Christ! 4-9 I am always thankful to God for what the gift of his grace in Jesus Christ has meant to you—how, as the Christian message has become established among you, he has enriched your whole lives, from the words on your lips to the understanding in your hearts. And you have been eager to receive his gifts during this time of waiting for his final appearance. He will keep you steadfast in the faith to the end, so that when his day comes you need fear no condemnation. God is utterly dependable, and it is he who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ, our Lord. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: Hark! a herald voice is calling TiS 264

1. Hark! a herald voice is calling: ‘Christ is near,’ it seems to say, ‘cast away the dreams of darkness, waken, children of the day!’ 2. Wakened by the solemn warning let the earth-bound soul arise; Christ, her sun, all sloth dispelling shines upon the morning skies. 3. Lo, the Lamb so long expected comes with pardon now from heav’n; let us meet him with repentance, pray that we may be forgiv’n. 4. So when love comes forth in judgment, debts and doubts and wrongs to clear, faithful may he find his servants watching till the dawn appear. Anon., Latin ?6th cent. tr. Edward Caswall 1814–78 and others

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA – Sung by ALL

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 13 beginning at the 31st verse.

Earth and sky will pass away, but what I have told you will never pass away! But no one knows the day or the hour of this happening, not even the angels in Heaven, no, not even the Son—only the Father. Keep your eyes open, keep on the alert, for you do not know when the time will be. 34-37 It is as if a man who is travelling abroad had left his house and handed it over to be managed by his servants. He has given each one his work to do and has ordered the doorkeeper to be on the look-out for his return. Just so must you keep a look-out, for you do not know when the master of the house will come—it might be late evening, or midnight, or cock-crow, or early morning—otherwise he might come unexpectedly and find you sound asleep. What I am saying to you I am saying to all; keep on the alert!” Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

Offertory Hymn: Songs of thankfulness and praise NEH 56

1. Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to thee we raise, manifested by the star to the sages from afar; branch of royal David's stem in thy birth at Bethlehem; anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest.

4. Sun and moon shall darkened be, stars shall fall, the heavens shall flee; Christ will then like lightning shine, all will see his glorious sign; all will then the trumpet hear, all will see the Judge appear; thou by all wilt be confessed, God in man made manifest.

2. Manifest at Jordan's stream, Prophet, Priest and King supreme; and at Cana, wedding guest, in thy Godhead manifest; manifest in power divine, changing water into wine; anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest.

5. Grant us grace to see thee, Lord, mirrored in thy holy Word; may we imitate thee now, and be pure, as pure art thou; that we like to thee may be at thy great Epiphany; and may praise thee, ever blest, God in man made manifest.

3. Manifest in making whole palsied limbs and fainting soul; manifest in valiant fight, quelling all the devil's might; manifest in gracious will, ever bringing good from ill; anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest. 15

Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Creator of the Stars of night, arr. John Scott. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

19

Final Hymn: Give me the wings of faith to rise NEH 225

1. Give me the wings of faith to rise within the veil, and see the saints above, how great their joys, how bright their glories be.

4. They marked the footsteps that he trod, his zeal inspired their breast, and, following their incarnate God, possess the promised rest.

2. Once they were mourning here below, and wet their couch with tears; they wrestled hard, as we do now, with sins and doubts and fears.

5. Our glorious leader claims our praise for his own pattern given; while the long cloud of witnesses show the same path to heaven. Isaac Watts 1674–1748

3. I ask them whence their victory came; they, with united breath, ascribe their conquest to the Lamb, their triumph to his death.

20

THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE Post-Communion Prayer Prayer of self-offering Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. AMEN

We have had an incident this week (20/11) where an intruder was found inside the Vicarage. The front door was locked and there was no sign of forced entry. We believe that the intruder entered the Vicarage whilst parishioners were inside with the door unlocked, and then hid until they left, locking the door behind them. If you are in the Vicarage by yourself we recommend that you at least snib the security door. Fortunately the intruder was not violent and left the premises when asked to do so, but this is a reminder that care needs to be taken. 22
