Dear Parishioners, What kind of future are you preparing for? Jesus challenges us to think - to think about the consequences of our choices, especially the choices and decisions that will count not just for now but for eternity as well. The choices we make now will affect and shape our future, both our future on earth as well as in the life of the age to come. Jesus tells a simple story of two flawed sons to illustrate the way of God's kingdom. The father amply provided everything they needed. Everything the father had belonged to them as well. The father also rewarded his sons with excellent work in his own vineyard. He expected them to show him gratitude, loyalty, and honour by doing their fair share of the daily work. The "rebellious" son told his father to his face that he would not work for him. But afterwards he changed his mind and did what his father commanded him. The "good" son said he would work for his father, but didn't follow through. He sought his own pleasure, contrary to his father's will. Now who was really the good son? Both sons disobeyed their father - but one repented and then did what the father told him. Jesus makes his point clear - good intentions are not enough and promises don't count unless they are performed. God wants to change our hearts so that we will show by our speech and by our actions that we respect his will and do it. God offers each one of us the greatest treasure possible - indestructible peace, joy, and friendship with him in his everlasting kingdom. We can lose that treasure if we refuse the grace - the free gift of God's blessing and strength - which the Lord Jesus has won for us. The Lord Jesus fills us with the gift of the Holy Spirit who works in and through us for the glory of God. (Romans 14:17). Do you seek to please God and respect his will and loving plan for your life? Yours In Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness TiS 454
1. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness, bow down before him, his glory proclaim; gold of obedience and incense of lowliness bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name.
4. These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, he will accept for the name that is dear, mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, trust for our trembling, and hope for our fear.
2. Low at his feet lay your burden of carefulness, high on his heart he will bear it for you, comfort your sorrows, and answer your prayerfulness, guiding your steps in the way best for you.
5. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness, bow down before him, his glory proclaim; gold of obedience and incense of lowliness bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name.
John Samuel Bewley Monsell 1811–75 alt.
3. Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness of the poor wealth you would reckon to own: truth in its beauty and love in its tenderness, these are the offerings to bring to his throne.

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Sentence: Come, let us return to the Lord, that we may live before him. Hosea 6.1a, 2b The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.
The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5
The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Kyrie eleison

The Collect Grant, O merciful God, that your people may have that mind that was in Christ Jesus, who emptied himself, and took the form of a servant, and in humility became obedient even to death. For you have highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, Jesus Christ, the Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in everlasting glory. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Exodus 17.1–7 The whole Israelite community left the desert of Sin, moving from one place to another at the command of the LORD. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water there to drink. 2 They complained to Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses answered, “Why are you complaining? Why are you putting the LORD to the test?” 3 But the people were very thirsty and continued to complain to Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? To kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” 4 Moses prayed earnestly to the LORD and said, “What can I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.” 5 The LORD said to Moses, “Take some of the leaders of Israel with you, and go on ahead of the people. Take along the stick with which you struck the Nile. 6 I will stand before you on a rock at Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” Moses did so in the presence of the leaders of Israel. 7 The place was named Massah and Meribah,[a] because the Israelites complained and put the LORD to the test when they asked, “Is the LORD with us or not?” Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD 8
Psalm: 78.1–4, 11–16 1 Give heed to my teaching, O my people: incline your ears to the words of my mouth; 2 For I will open my mouth in a parable: and expound the mysteries of former times. 3 What we have heard and known: what our forebears have told us, 4 We will not hide from their children, but declare to a generation yet to come: the praiseworthy acts of the Lord, his mighty and wonderful works. 11 For he did marvellous things in the sight of their ancestors: in the land of Egypt, in the country of Zoan. 12 He divided the sea and let them pass through: he made the waters stand up in a heap. 13 In the daytime he led them with a cloud: and all night long with the light of fire. 14 He cleft rocks in the wilderness: and gave them drink in abundance as from springs of water. 15 He brought streams out of the rock: and caused the waters to flow down like rivers. 16 But for all this they sinned yet more against him: and rebelled against the Most High in the desert.

Second Reading: Philippians 2.1-13 2 1-4 Now if your experience of Christ’s encouragement and love means anything to you, if you have known something of the fellowship of his Spirit, and all that it means in kindness and deep sympathy, do make my best hope for you come true! Live together in harmony, live together in love, as though you had only one mind and one spirit between you. Never act from motives of rivalry or personal vanity, but in humility think more of each other than you do of yourselves. None of you should think only of his own affairs, but should learn to see things from other people’s point of view. 5-11 Let Christ himself be your example as to what your attitude should be. For he, who had always been God by nature, did not cling to his prerogatives as God’s equal, but stripped himself of all privilege by consenting to be a slave by nature and being born as mortal man. And, having become man, he humbled himself by living a life of utter obedience, even to the extent of dying, and the death he died was the death of a common criminal. That is why God has now lifted him so high, and has given him the name beyond all names, so that at the name of Jesus “every knee shall bow”, whether in Heaven or earth or under the earth. And that is why, in the end, “every tongue shall confess” that Jesus Christ” is the Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 12-13 So then, my dearest friends, as you have always followed my advice—and that not only when I was present to give it—so now that I am far away be keener than ever to work out the salvation that God has given you with a proper sense of awe and responsibility. For it is God who is at work within you, giving you the will and the power to achieve his purpose. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: How sweet the name of Jesus sounds NEH 374
1. How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear! It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, and drives away his fear.
4. Jesus, my shepherd, brother, friend, my prophet, priest and king, my Lord, my life, my way, my end, accept the praise I bring.
2. It makes the wounded spirit whole and calms the troubled breast, ‘Tis manna to the hungry soul and to the weary rest.
5. Weak is the effort of my heart, and cold my warmest thought; but when I see you as thou art I’ll praise thee as I ought.
3. Dear name! the rock on which I build, my shield and hiding-place, my never-failing treasury, filled with boundless stores of grace:
6. Till then I would thy love proclaim With every fleeting breath; And may the music of thy name Refresh my soul in death. John Newton 1725–1807
WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA – Sung by ALL

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 21 beginning at the 23rd verse.
23 Then
when he had entered the Temple and was in the act of teaching, the chief priests and Jewish elders came up to him and said, “What authority have you for what you’re doing, and who gave you that authority?” 24-26 “I am also going to ask you one question,” Jesus replied to them, “and if you answer it I will tell you what authority I have for what I do. John’s baptism, now, did it come from Heaven or was it purely human?” At this they began arguing among themselves, “If we say, ‘it came from Heaven’, he will say to us, ‘Then why didn’t you believe in him?’ If on the other hand we should say, ‘It was purely human’—well, frankly, we are afraid of the people—for all of them consider John was a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” “Then I will not tell you by what authority I do these things!” returned Jesus. 28-32 “But what is your opinion about this? There was a man with two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Go and work in my vineyard today, my son,’ he said, ‘All right, sir’—but he never went near it. Then his father approached the second son with the same request. He said, ‘I won’t.’ But afterwards he changed his mind and went. Which of these two did what their father wanted?” “The second one,” they replied. “Yes, and I tell you that tax-collectors and prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God in front of you!” retorted Jesus. “For John came to you as a saint, and you did not believe him—yet the tax-collectors and the prostitutes did! And, even after seeing that, you would not change your minds and believe him.” Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. Agnus Dei We pray together: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.
Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD) 19
Final Hymn: Thou whose almighty word NEH 466
1. Thou whose almighty word chaos and darkness heard, and took their flight: hear us, we humbly pray, and where the gospel day sheds not its glorious ray, let there be light.
3. Spirit of truth and love, life-giving holy dove, speed forth thy flight; move o’er the waters’ face, bearing the lamp of grace, and in earth’s darkest place let there be light.
2. Thou who didst come to bring on thy redeeming wing healing and sight, health to the sick in mind, sight to the inly blind, O now to all mankind let there be light.
4. Holy and blessèd Three, glorious Trinity, Wisdom, Love, Might, boundless as ocean’s tide rolling in fullest pride, through the world far and wide, let there be light. John Marriott 1780–1825
