Dear Parishioners, Jesus' feeding of the five thousand is the only miracle recorded in all four Gospel accounts. What is the meaning and significance of this miracle? The miraculous feeding of such a great multitude remembered the miraculous provision of manna in the wilderness under Moses' leadership and intercession for his people (Exodus 16). The daily provision of food for the people of Israel during their forty years of journeying in the desert anticipated the true heavenly bread which Jesus would pass on to his disciples at his last supper meal on the eve of his crucifixion. Jesus makes an astounding claim which only God can make: He is the true bread of heaven that can satisfy the very deepest hunger we could ever experience (John 6:32-35). The miracle of the multiplication of the loaves, when Jesus said the blessing, broke and distributed the loaves through his disciples to feed the multitude, is a sign that prefigures the great plenty of the unique bread of the Eucharist, or Lord's Supper which sustains us on our journey to the kingdom of heaven. Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD) wrote with insight, the following: "So that by every means the Lord might be known to be God by nature, he multiplies what is little, and he looks up to heaven as though asking for the blessing from above. Now he does this out of the divine economy, for our sake. For he himself is the one who fills all things, the true blessing from above and from the Father. But, so that we might learn that when we are in charge of the table and are preparing to break the loaves, we ought to bring them to God with hands upraised and bring down upon them the blessing from above, he became for us the beginning and pattern and way." (1) The feeding of the five thousand shows the remarkable and immense generosity of God and his great kindness towards us. When God gives, he gives without stinting. He gives more than we need for ourselves that we may have something to share with others, especially those who lack what they need. God takes the little we have and multiplies it for the good of others. Do you trust in God's provision for you and do you share freely with others, especially those who lack? Yours In Christ, Fr Robert (1) Cyril of Alexandria The Lord fills all things with blessing (excerpt from FRAGMENT 177) Patristic readings from The Office of Readings (The Liturgy of the Hours), (c) 1974 English translation prepared by the International Commission of English in the Liturgy.

Hymn: Morning has broken NEH 237
1. Morning has broken like the first morning; blackbird has spoken like the first bird. Praise for the singing, praise for the morning, praise for them, springing fresh from the word.
3. Mine is the sunlight; mine is the morning born of the one light Eden saw play. Praise with elation, praise every morning, God’s re-creation of the new day. Eleanor Farjeon 1881–1965
2. Sweet the rain’s new fall sunlit from heaven, like the first dewfall on the first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where his feet pass.
Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you. 3
Sentence: The Lord is near to all who call on him in truth. He fulfils the desire of all that fear him, hears their cry, and saves them. Psalm 145.18–19 The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.
The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect O God, giver of life and health, whose Son Jesus Christ has called us to hunger and thirst for justice: refresh us with your grace, that we may not be weary in well-doing, for the sake of him who meets all our needs, Jesus Christ our Saviour; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Genesis 32.22-31 22 That
same night Jacob got up, took his two wives, his two concubines, and his eleven children, and crossed the Jabbok River. 23 After he had sent them across, he also sent across all that he owned, 24 but he stayed behind, alone. Then a man came and wrestled with him until just before daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he was not winning the struggle, he hit Jacob on the hip, and it was thrown out of joint. 26 The man said, “Let me go; daylight is coming.” “I won't, unless you bless me,” Jacob answered. 27 “What is your name?” the man asked. “Jacob,” he answered. 28 The man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob. You have struggled with God and with men, and you have won; so your name will be Israel.”[a] 29 Jacob said, “Now tell me your name.” But he answered, “Why do you want to know my name?” Then he blessed Jacob. 30 Jacob said, “I have seen God face-to-face, and I am still alive”; so he named the place Peniel.[b] 31 The sun rose as Jacob was leaving Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD 7
Psalm: 17.1-7, 16
1
Hear my just cause O Lord, give | heed to my | cry: listen to my prayer that | comes from no | lying | lips.
2
Let judgement for me come | forth from your | presence: and let your | eyes dis|cern the | right.
3
Though you search my heart and visit me | in the | night-time: though you try me by fire, you will | find no | wickedness | in me.
4
My mouth does not transgress, like the | mouth of | others: for I have | kept the | word of your | lips.
5
My steps have held firm in the way of |your com|mands: and my feet have not | stumbled | from your | paths.
6
I call upon you O God, for you will | surely | answer: incline your ear to | me and | hear my | words.
7
Show me the wonders of your steadfast love, O saviour of those who come to | you for | refuge: who by your right hand deliver them from | those that rise | up a|gainst them.
16
And I also shall see your face, because my | cause is | just: when I awake and see you as you | are I | shall be | satisfied.
Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men. 8
Second Reading: Romans 9.1-8 9 1-3 Before Christ and my own conscience I assure you that I am speaking the plain truth when I say that there is something that makes me feel very depressed, like a pain that never leaves me. It is the condition of my brothers and fellow-Israelites, and I have actually reached the pitch of wishing myself cut off from Christ if it meant that they could be won for God. 4-5 Just think what the Israelites have had given to them. The privilege of being adopted as sons of God, the experience of seeing something of the glory of God, the receiving of the agreements made with God, the gift of the Law, true ways of worship, God’s own promises—all these are theirs, and so too, as far as human descent goes, is Christ himself, Christ who is God over all, blessed for ever. 6-7 Now this does not mean that God’s word to Israel has failed. For you cannot count all “Israelites” as the true Israel of God. Nor can all Abraham’s descendants be considered truly children of Abraham. The promise was that ‘in Isaac your seed shall be called’. 8 That means that it is not the natural descendants who automatically inherit the promise, but, on the contrary, that the children of the promise (i.e. sons of God) are to be considered truly Abraham’s children. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: Sweet Sacrament divine NEH 307
1. Sweet Sacrament divine, hid in thine earthly home; lo! round thy lowly shrine, with suppliant hearts we come; Jesu, to thee our voice we raise In songs of love and heartfelt praise sweet Sacrament divine. 2. Sweet Sacrament of peace, Dear home for every heart, Where restless yearnings cease And sorrows all depart; There in thine ear all trustfully We tell our tale of misery: Sweet Sacrament of peace.
3. Sweet Sacrament of rest, Ark from the ocean’s roar, Within thy shelter blest Soon may we reach the shore; Save us, for still the tempest raves, Save, lest we sink beneath the waves: Sweet Sacrament of rest. 4. Sweet Sacrament divine, Earth’s light and jubilee, In thy far depths doth shine The Godhead’s majesty; Sweet light, so shine on us, we pray That earthly joys may fade away: Sweet Sacrament divine.

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 14 beginning at the 13th verse.
13a When
he heard it he went away by boat to a deserted place, quite
alone. 13b-15 Then the crowds heard of his departure and followed him out of the towns on foot. When Jesus emerged from his retreat he saw a vast crowd and was very deeply moved and cured the sick among them. As evening fell his disciples came to him and said, “We are right in the wilds here and it is very late. Send away these crowds now, so that they can go into the villages and buy themselves food.” 16 “There’s no need for them to go away,” returned Jesus. “You give them something to eat!” 17 “But we haven’t anything here,” they told him, “except five loaves and two fish.” 18 To which Jesus replied, “Bring them here to me.” 19-21 He told the crowd to sit down on the grass. Then he took the five loaves and the two fish in his hands, and, looking up to Heaven, he thanked God, broke the loaves and passed them to his disciples who handed them to the crowd. Everybody ate and was satisfied. Afterwards they collected twelve baskets full of the pieces which were left over. Those who ate numbered about five thousand men, apart from the women and children. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

Offertory Hymn: All my hope on God is founded TiS 560(i)
1. All my hope on God is founded; all my trust he will renew, through all change and chance he guides me, only good and only true. God unknown, he alone calls my heart to be his own.
4. Daily the almighty giver will his bounteous gifts bestow; in his will our souls find pleasure, leading us where’er we go. Love will stand at his hand, joy shall wait for his command. 5. Still from earth to God eternal sacrifice of praise be done, high above all praises praising for the gift of Christ his Son. Hear Christ call one and all: those who follow shall not fall.
2. Human pride and earthly glory, sword and crown betray our trust; all we build with care and labour, tower and temple, fall to dust. But God’s power, hour by hour, is my temple and my tower. 3. God’s great goodness lasts for ever, deep his wisdom, passing thought; splendour, light and life attend him, beauty springing out of naught. Evermore from his store new-born worlds rise and adore. 15

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Ave Verum Corpus, Elgar. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.
Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD) 19
Final Hymn: Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! TiS 161
1. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice; tender to me the promise of his word; in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice. 2. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name! Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; his mercy sure, from age to age the same; his holy name - the Lord, the Mighty One. 3. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by. Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, the humble lifted high. 4. Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word! Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord to children’s children and for evermore! Timothy Dudley-Smith 1926– based on Luke 1:46–55 in The New English Bible
