Dear Parishioners, Jesus declared that any kindness shown and any help given to people will not lose its reward (Matthew 10:42). Jesus never refused to give to anyone in real need who asked for his help. As his disciples we are called to be kind and generous as he is. Jesus sets before us the one goal in life that is worth any sacrifice and that goal is union with God - uniting our heart, mind, and will with his heart and will for our lives. The reward of a life given over to God and obeying his voice is God himself the source of true peace and joy that lasts forever. Does the love of Jesus Christ compel you to put God first in all you do (2 Corinthians 5:14)? Mother Theresa of Calcutta in her acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 said this: “One evening a gentleman came to our house and said, there is a Hindu family and the eight children have not eaten for a long time. Do something for them. And I took rice and I went immediately, and there was this mother, those little one's faces, shining eyes from sheer hunger. She took the rice from my hand, she divided into two and she went out. When she came back, I asked her, where did you go? What did you do? And one answer she gave me: They are hungry also. She knew that the next door neighbour, a Muslim family, was hungry. What surprised me most, not that she gave the rice, but what surprised me most, that in her suffering, in her hunger, she knew that somebody else was hungry, and she had the courage to share, share the love. And this is what I mean, I want you to love the poor, and never turn your back to the poor, for in turning your back to the poor, you are also turning it to Christ. (1) Yours In Christ, Fr Robert 1) www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1979/teresa-acceptance_en.html

Hymn: Son of God, eternal Saviour NEH 498

1. Son of God, eternal Saviour, source of life and truth and grace, Son of Man, whose birth incarnate hallows all our human race, thou, our Head, who, throned in glory, for thine own dost ever plead, fill us with thy love and pity; heal our wrongs, and help our need.

3. Come, O Christ, and reign among us, King of love, and Prince of peace; hush the storm of strife and passion, bid its cruel discords cease; by thy patient years of toiling, by thy silent hours of pain, quench our fevered thirst of pleasure, shame our selfish greed of gain.

2. As thou, Lord, hast lived for others, so may we for others live; freely have thy gifts been granted, freely may thy servants give: thine the gold and thine the silver, thine the wealth of land and sea, we but stewards of thy bounty, held in solemn trust for thee.

5. Son of God, eternal Saviour, source of life and truth and grace, Son of Man, whose birth incarnate hallows all our human race, thou who prayedst, thou who willest, that thy people should be one, grant, O grant our hope's fruition: here on earth thy will be done.

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. 4

Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Sentence: The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6.23 The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect O God, your Son has taught us that those who give a cup of water in his name will not lose their reward: open our hearts to the needs of your children, and in all things make us obedient to your will, so that in faith we may receive your gracious gift, eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Genesis 22.1-14 22 Some time later God tested Abraham; he called to him, “Abraham!” And Abraham answered, “Yes, here I am!” 2 “Take your son,” God said, “your only son, Isaac, whom you love so much, and go to the land of Moriah. There on a mountain that I will show you, offer him as a sacrifice to me.” 3 Early the next morning Abraham cut some wood for the sacrifice, loaded his donkey, and took Isaac and two servants with him. They started out for the place that God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham saw the place in the distance. 5 Then he said to the servants, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there and worship, and then we will come back to you.” 6 Abraham made Isaac carry the wood for the sacrifice, and he himself carried a knife and live coals for starting the fire. As they walked along together, 7 Isaac spoke up, “Father!” He answered, “Yes, my son?” Isaac asked, “I see that you have the coals and the wood, but where is the lamb for the sacrifice?” 8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide one.” And the two of them walked on together. 9 When they came to the place which God had told him about, Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. He tied up his son and placed him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he picked up the knife to kill him. 11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” He answered, “Yes, here I am.” 12 “Don't hurt the boy or do anything to him,” he said. “Now I know that you honour and obey God, because you have not kept back your only son from him.” 8

13 Abraham

looked around and saw a ram caught in a bush by its horns. He went and got it and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 Abraham named that place “The LORD Provides.”[a] And even today people say, “On the LORD's mountain he provides.”[b]

Second Reading: Romans 6.12-23 12-14 Do

not, then, allow sin to establish any power over your mortal bodies in making you give way to your lusts. Nor hand over your organs to be, as it were, weapons of evil for the devil’s purposes. But, like men rescued from certain death, put yourselves in God’s hands as weapons of good for his own purposes. For sin is not meant to be your master—you are no longer living under the Law, but under grace. The new service completely ousts the old 15-21 Now, what shall we do? Shall we go on sinning because we have no Law to condemn us any more, but are living under grace? Never! Just think what it would mean. You belong to the power which you choose to obey, whether you choose sin, whose reward is death, or God, obedience to whom means the reward of righteousness. Thank God that you, who were at one time the servants of sin, honestly responded to the impact of Christ’s teaching when you came under its influence. Then, released from the service of sin, you entered the service of righteousness. (I use an everyday illustration because human nature grasps truth more readily that way.) In the past you voluntarily gave your bodies to the service of vice and wickedness—for the purpose of becoming wicked. So, now, give yourselves to the service of righteousness—for the purpose of becoming really good. For when you were employed by sin you owed no duty to righteousness. Yet what sort of harvest did you reap from those things that today you blush to remember? In the long run those things mean one thing only—death. 22 But now that you are employed by God, you owe no duty to sin, and you reap the fruit of being made righteous, while at the end of the road there is life for evermore. 23 Sin pays its servants: the wage is death. But God gives to those who serve him: his free gift is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: We love the place, O God NEH 471

1 We love the place, O God, wherein thine honour dwells; the joy of thine abode all earthly joy excels.

5 We love the word of life, the word that tells of peace, of comfort in the strife, and joys that never cease.

2 We love the house of prayer, wherein thy servants meet; and thou, O Lord, art there thy chosen flock to greet.

6 We love to sing below for mercies freely given; but O, we long to know the triumph-song of heaven.

3 We love the sacred font; for there the holy Dove to pour is ever wont his blessing from above.

7 Lord Jesus, give us grace on earth to love thee more, in heaven to see thy face, and with thy saints adore.

4 We love thine altar, Lord; O what on earth so dear? for there, in faith adored, we find thy presence near.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA – Sung by ALL

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 10 beginning at the 40th verse.

40 “Whoever

welcomes you, welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me is welcoming the one who sent me. 41-42 “Whoever welcomes a prophet just because he is a prophet will get a prophet’s reward. And whoever welcomes a good man just because he is a good man will get a good man’s reward. Believe me, anyone who gives even a drink of water to one of these little ones, just because he is my disciple, will by no means lose his reward.”

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

Offertory Hymn: Light’s abode, celestial Salem NEH 401

1. Light's abode, celestial Salem, Vision dear whence peace doth spring, Brighter than the heart can fancy, Mansion of the highest King; O, how glorious are the praises Which of thee the Prophets sing.

4. O how glorious and resplendent, Fragile body, shalt thou be, When endued with so much beauty, Full of health, and strong, and free, Full of vigour, full of pleasure That shall last eternally! 5. Now with gladness, now with courage, Bear the burden on thee laid, That hereafter these thy labours May with endless gifts be paid, And in everlasting glory Thou with joy may'st be arrayed.

2. There for ever and for ever Alleluia is outpoured; For unending, for unbroken Is the feast-day of the Lord; All is pure and all is holy That within thy walls is stored. 3. There no cloud nor passing vapour Dims the brightness of the air; Endless noon-day, glorious noon-day, From the Sun of suns is there; There no night brings rest from labour, There unknown are toil and care.

15

6. Laud and honour to the Father, Laud and honour to the Son, Laud and honour to the Spirit, Ever Three and ever One, One in love, and One in splendour, While unending ages run.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “God be in my head, Bayley. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD) 19

Final Hymn: God moves in a mysterious way NEH 365

1. God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform; he plants his footsteps in the sea and rides upon the storm. 2. Deep in unfathomable mines of never-failing skill he treasures up his bright designs, and works his sovereign will. 3. You fearful saints, fresh courage take: the clouds you so much dread are big with mercy, and shall break in blessings on your head.

4. Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, but trust him for his grace; behind a frowning providence he hides a smiling face. 5. His purposes will ripen fast, unfolding every hour; the bud may have a bitter taste, but sweet will be the flower. 6. Blind unbelief is sure to err, and scan his work in vain; God is his own interpreter, and he will make it plain. William Cowper 1731–1800

GENERAL NOTICES BIRTHDAYS: Spencer Cowley (Tuesday), Nell Eddy (Wednesday), Nancy Daniels (Friday) Holy Trinity Celebration - We will concelebrate our Patronal Festival and the arrival of the final planning permit for our Development Project sometime over the next few Sundays (hopefully). Owing to the close nature of the final approval I will advise as soon as possible when and where we will have our celebration. The Vicar National Trust Appeal - With 30 June fast approaching it is an opportune time to make a tax deductible donation to our National Trust Building Appeal. Over the past year the Appeal has paid for the replacement of the Church electrical switchboard, relocation of the electricity meter, major work to the Church roof, and termite protection for the Parish Hall. In the near term, it will fund replacement of the Jubilee Hall switchboard, a new floor in the front part of the Parish Hall, and further electrical work in the Church. These critical maintenance projects are only possible through the Appeal – we could only manage a fraction of this work if it had to be funded from operating income. Donation forms are available at the back of the Church or from Brenda in the Office. Donations of any size are welcome. Thank you to everyone who has supported the Appeal over the past year. Trinity Times - The closing date for the Winter edition is Thursday 20th July. Please would you send items to ireneshorthouse@iprimus.com.au or please leave at the Office, marked for 'Trinity Times'. Trinity Times New Editor - Beginning with our Advent/ Christmas 2017 edition, Leonie Bird will take over the editorialship of the Trinity Times from Irene Shorthouse. Leonie has contributed to Trinity Times for many years. We look forward to her leadership of the paper and give thanks for Irene’s sterling work over 20 years. Vicar Holy Trinity Anglicare Group met on Thursday June 22 in the Chapel and listened to Kerry Wise from the Broadmeadows Women’s Community House tell of her work assisting refugee & migrant women and their children to settle in to life in Australia. Far away from family support, and with few language skills, feelings of isolation are common and a safe place to meet with others in a similar situation is very important. Watch for details of our next meeting; all are welcome to attend. Marg Kelly, Convenor 22
