Dear Parishioners, What does fear have to do with God’s kingdom?? Fear is a powerful and potent force. It can lead us to panic and flight or it can spur us on to faith and action. The fear of God is the remedy to the fear of losing one's life. I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. O fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him have no want! Come, O sons, listen to me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord. (Psalm 34:4,9,11) What is godly fear? It is respect and reverence for the One who made us in love and who sustains us in mercy and kindness. The greatest injury or loss which we can experience is not physical but spiritual - the loss of one's soul. A healthy fear of God leads to spiritual maturity, wisdom and right judgment and it frees us from the tyranny of sinful pride, cowardice - especially in the face of evil, and spiritual deception. When Jesus proclaimed the kingdom of God he met open hostility and opposition (from the Pharisees, scribes and Sadducees to name a few) and the general apathy and indifference of many. He tells his disciples that they must expect the same treatment if they are to live and to proclaim the reign of God. There is both a warning and a privilege in his statement. Just as Jesus had to carry his cross, so the disciples must carry their cross and not try to evade it. To suffer for the faith is to share in the work of Christ. The Holy Spirit gives us power and grace to live as disciples of Jesus Christ. Do you trust in God’s grace to carry your cross for Jesus' sake? Yours In Christ, Fr Robert

Invocation:
Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.
Greeting:
The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU.
(see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for Jesus’ sake will find it. Matthew 10.39 The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. Kyrie eleison: Lord have mercy: R/: Lord have mercy Christ have mercy: R/: Christ have mercy Lord have mercy: R/: Lord have mercy 3
The Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect Gracious God, we who were baptised into Christ Jesus were baptised into his death: we pray that, as you raised him from death, so by the power of the Holy Spirit we may live the new life to your glory, knowing ourselves to be dead in sin but alive for you in Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Genesis 21.8-21 8 The child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. 9 But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son 4
Isaac. 10 So she said to Abraham, ‘Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac.’ 11 The matter was very distressing to Abraham on account of his son. 12 But God said to Abraham, ‘Do not be distressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named after you. 13 As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.’ 14 So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. 15 When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, ‘Do not let me look on the death of the child.’ And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, ‘What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. 18 Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him.’ 19 Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink. 20 God was with the boy, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness, and became an expert with the bow. 21 He lived in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD Psalm: 86.1-10, 16-17 Incline your ear to me, O God, and answer me: for I am poor and in misery. 2 Preserve my life, for I am faithful: My God, save your servant who trusts in you. 3 Be merciful to me, O Lord: for I call to you all the day long. 4 O make glad the soul of your servant: for I put my hope in you, O Lord. 1
5
For you, Lord, are good and forgiving: of great and continuing kindness to all who call upon you. 6 Hear my prayer, O Lord: and give heed to the voice of my supplication. 7 In the day of my trouble I call upon you: for you will surely answer. 8 Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord: nor are there any deeds like yours. 9 All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you: O Lord, they shall glorify your name. 10 For you are great and do marvellous things: and you alone are God. 16 Turn to me and be merciful, give your strength to your servant: and save the child of your handmaid. 17 Show me some token of your goodness: that those who hate me may see it and be ashamed, because you, Lord, are my helper and my comforter. 5
Second Reading: Romans 6.1-11 1 What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.6 We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin.7 For whoever has died is freed from sin. 8 But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD 6
WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 10 beginning at the 24th verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. ‘A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; 25 it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household! 26 ‘So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. 27 What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. 28 Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground unperceived by your Father. 30 And even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31 So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 ‘Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; 33 but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven. 34 ‘Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord, PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 24

SERMON - followed by a short time for reflection (copy of sermon available at back of church and a selection available on web) The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Jesus said: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you. John 13.34 [Let us pray] We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution [Celebrant] Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 10

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread.
Agnus Dei We pray together: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind. 12
Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)

GENERAL NOTICES Memorial Flowers: In memory of Nell & Max Croft, wonderful parents of Carol Fraser. BIRTHDAYS: Amanda McLeod (TODAY), Ian Lees (Thursday), Trish Renfree (Saturday) Holy Trinity Celebration We will concelebrate our Patronal Festival and the arrival of the final planning permit for our Development Project sometime over the next few Sundays (hopefully). Owing to the close nature of the final approval I will advise as soon as possible when and where we will have our celebration. The Vicar National Trust Appeal With 30 June fast approaching it is an opportune time to make a tax deductible donation to our National Trust Building Appeal. Over the past year the Appeal has paid for the replacement of the Church electrical switchboard, relocation of the electricity meter, major work to the Church roof, and termite protection for the Parish Hall. In the near term, it will fund replacement of the Jubilee Hall switchboard, a new floor in the front part of the Parish Hall, and further electrical work in the Church. These critical maintenance projects are only possible through the Appeal – we could only manage a fraction of this work if it had to be funded from operating income. Donation forms are available at the back of the Church or from Brenda in the Office. Donations of any size are welcome. Thank you to everyone who has supported the Appeal over the past year. Trinity Times New Editor Beginning with our Advent/ Christmas 2017 edition Leonie Bird will take over the editorialship of the Trinity Times from Irene Shorthouse. Leonie has contributed to the Trinity Times over many years. We look forward to her leadership of the paper and give thanks for Irene’s sterling work over twenty years. Vicar 14
