Dear Parishioners, Basil the Great (329-379 AD), an early church father, explains the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives: "The Spirit restores paradise to us and the way to heaven and adoption as children of God; he instils confidence that we may call God truly Father and grants us the grace of Christ to be children of the light and to enjoy eternal glory. In a word, he bestows the fullness of blessings in this world and the next; for we may contemplate now in the mirror of faith the promised things we shall someday enjoy. If this is the foretaste, what must the reality be? If these are the first fruits, what must be the harvest?â€? (1) Jesus offers each and every one of us the gift and power of his Holy Spirit. He wants to make our faith resilient and strong, to give us a hope that endures, and a love that never grows cold. He never refuses to give his Spirit to those who seek and ask with an expectant faith. Jesus instructed his disciples to ask boldly for the gift of the Spirit: "If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12.1-13 12 Now I want to give you some further information in some spiritual matters. 2-3 You

have not forgotten that you were Gentiles, following dumb idols just as you had been taught. Now I want you to understand, as Christians, that no one speaking by the Spirit of God could call Jesus accursed, and no one could say that he is the Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. 4-7 Men

have different gifts, but it is the same Spirit who gives them. There are different ways of serving God, but it is the same Lord who is served. God works through different men in different ways, but it is the same God who achieves his purposes through them all. Each man is given his gift by the Spirit that he may make the most of it. 8-11 One

manâ€™s gift by the Spirit is to speak with wisdom, anotherâ€™s to speak with knowledge. The same Spirit gives to another man faith, to another the ability to heal, to another the power to do great deeds. The same Spirit gives to another man the gift of preaching the word of God, to another the ability to discriminate in spiritual matters, to another speech in different tongues. Behind all these gifts is the operation of the same Spirit, who distributes to each individual man, as he wills. The human body is an example of organic unity 12-13 As

the human body, which has many parts, is a unity, and those parts, despite their multiplicity, constitute one single body, so it is with the body of Christ. For we were all baptised by the Spirit into one body, whether we were Jews, Gentiles, slaves or free men, and we have all had experience of the same Spirit. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for all people and for the Church throughout the world. Each petition of intercession or thanksgiving concludes with, Lord in your mercy, HEAR OUR PRAYER. THE BAPTISM When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church. Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection. While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a childâ€™s character. In this service of baptism we bring Xavier into Godâ€™s presence that he may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.

The Baptism party gathers around the font. The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit? A/ I do. Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Xavier for baptism? A/ I will. Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage him in the life and faith of the Christian community? A/ I will. Q/ As your life will be an example to Xavier, will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions? A/ I will. Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy? A/ I will. Priest to the congregation: You have heard our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? ALL: WE WILL. Priest: Almighty God lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. AMEN. 16

Prayers and Blessing of the water [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Xavier may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in him where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom. And now we give you thanks that you have called Xavier to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. + Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that all who are baptized may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

An affirmation of faith Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming the faith of the church. Do you believe in God the Father? A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, Godâ€™s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? A/: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN. 17

The Baptism Priest: Xavier Joel, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, AMEN. I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ’s own forever. (Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used in anointing to symbolize being chosen in God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in Christ.)

Live as a disciple of Christ; fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. ALL: Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. Priest: God has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. ALL: Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Priest: God has called you into his church. ALL: We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God. Prayers for the child, parents and godparents Merciful God, in your infinite love you have made a new covenant with us in Jesus Christ, promising to be our God and the God of our children. Enable all who are baptized in your name to live as your faithful people. Fulfil your promises for Xavier, we pray, and grant that he may grow in your faith and service. We pray for Brenda, Cameron and Samuel, that in your Spirit of wisdom, Xavier’s family may grow in your love, and their home share in the joy of your eternal kingdom. And we pray for Xavier’s godparents, Leanne, Carolyn and Penny; enable them to share with their godson what you have revealed to us of your love in your holy gospel. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: â€œCome, Holy Ghostâ€?, Attwood. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. In the near term, it will fund replacement of the Jubilee Hall electrical switchboard, a new floor in the front part of the Parish Hall, and further electrical work in the Church. These critical maintenance projects are only possible through the Appeal – we could only manage a fraction of this work if it had to be funded from operating income. Donation forms are available at the back of the Church or from Brenda in the Parish Office. Donations of any size are welcome.
