Dear Parishioners, What is the significance of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead? It is more than a miraculous event. It is a "sign" of God's promise to raise up all who have died in Christ to everlasting life. That is why Jesus asked Martha if she believed in the resurrection from the dead. The Nicene Creed, which is the profession of our faith in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and in the saving power of God, culminates in the proclamation of the resurrection of the dead on the last day and in life everlasting. God gives us the power of his Holy Spirit that we may be made alive in Christ. Even now we can experience the power of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus in our personal lives. The Holy Spirit is ever ready to change and transform us into men and women of faith, hope, and love. Do you believe that the power of Jesus' resurrection is at work in your life today? Let the Holy Spirit strengthen within you the life and joy of God and the hope of heaven. The name Lazarus means, "God is my help". Jesus' parable of the poor man Lazarus who died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom (Luke 16:19-31), ends with a warning: "If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead." Through Lazarus' sickness and subsequent death, God brought glory through Jesus his only begotten Son, who raised his friend from the dead in anticipation of his own death and resurrection. Tell these dry bones to listen to the word of the LORD. 5 Tell them that I, the Sovereign LORD, am saying to them: I am going to put breath into you and bring you back to life. 6 I will give you sinews and muscles, and cover you with skin. Second Reading: Romans 8.6-11 5-8 The
carnal attitude sees no further than natural things. But the spiritual attitude reaches out after the things of the spirit. The former attitude means, bluntly, death: the latter means life and inward peace. And this is only to be expected, for the carnal attitude is inevitably opposed to the purpose of God, and neither can nor will follow his laws for living. Men who hold this attitude cannot possibly please God. 9-11 But you are not carnal but spiritual if the Spirit of God finds a home within you. You cannot, indeed, be a Christian at all unless you have something of his Spirit in you. Now if Christ does live within you his presence means that your sinful nature is dead, but your spirit becomes alive because of the righteousness he brings with him. I said that our nature is “dead� in the presence of Christ, and so it is, because of its sin. Nevertheless once the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead lives within you he will, by that same Spirit, bring to your whole being new strength and vitality. WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 11 beginning at the 1st verse.
11 1-3 Now there was a man by the name of Lazarus who became seriously ill. He lived in Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived. (Lazarus was the brother of the Mary who poured perfume upon the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) So the sisters sent word to Jesus: “Lord, your friend is ill.” 4 When Jesus received the message, he said, “This illness is not meant to end in death; it is going to bring glory to God—for it will show the glory of the Son of God.” 5-7 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard of Lazarus’ illness he stayed where he was two days longer. Only then did he say to the disciples, “Let us go back into Judea.” 8 “Master!” returned the disciples, “only a few days ago, the Jews were trying to stone you to death—are you going there again?” 9-10 “There are twelve hours of daylight every day, are there not?” replied Jesus. “If a man walks in the daytime, he does not stumble, for he has the daylight to see by. But if he walks at night he stumbles, because he cannot see where he is going.” 11 Jesus spoke these words; then after a pause he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going to wake him up.” 12 At this, his disciples said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be all right.” 13-15 Actually Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that he was speaking about falling into natural sleep. This made Jesus tell them quite plainly, “Lazarus has died, and I am glad that I was not there—for your sakes, that you may learn to believe. And now, let us go to him.” 16 Thomas (known as the twin) then said to his fellow-disciples, “Come on, then, let us all go and die with him!” 11
17-20 When
Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the grave four days. Now Bethany is quite near Jerusalem, rather less than two miles away, and a good many of the Jews had come out to see Martha and Mary to offer them sympathy over their brother’s death. When Martha heard that Jesus was on his way, she went out and met him, while Mary stayed in the house. 21-22 “If only you had been here, Lord,” said Martha, “my brother would never have died. And I know that, even now, God will give you whatever you ask from him.” 23 “Your brother will rise again,” Jesus replied to her. 24 “I know,” said Martha, “that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” 25-26 “I myself am the resurrection and the life,” Jesus told her. “The man who believes in me will live even though he dies, and anyone who is alive and believes in me will never die at all. Can you believe that?” 27-31 “Yes, Lord,” replied Martha. “I do believe that you are Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into the world.” Saying this she went away and called Mary her sister, whispering, “The master’s here and is asking for you.” When Mary heard this she sprang to her feet and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet arrived at the village itself, but was still where Martha had met him. So when the Jews who had been condoling with Mary in the house saw her get up quickly and go out, they followed her, imagining that she was going to the grave to weep there. 32 When Mary met Jesus, she looked at him, and then fell down at his feet. “If only you had been here, Lord,” she said, “my brother would never have died.” 33 When Jesus saw Mary weep and noticed the tears of the Jews who came with her, he was deeply moved and visibly distressed. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked. 35 “Lord, come and see,” they replied, and at this Jesus himself wept. 36-37 “Look how much he loved him!” remarked the Jews, though some of them asked, “Could he not have kept this man from dying if he could open that blind man’s eyes?” 38 Jesus was again deeply moved at these words, and went on to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay in front of it. 39 “Take away the stone,” said Jesus. “But Lord,” said Martha, the dead man’s sister, “he has been dead four days. By this time he will be decaying ....” 12

I not tell you,” replied Jesus, “that if you believed, you would see the wonder of what God can do?” 41-42 Then they took the stone away and Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I know that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of these people standing here so that they may believe that you have sent me.” 43 And when he had said this, he called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with grave-clothes and his face muffled with a handkerchief. “Now unbind him,” Jesus told them, “and let him go home.” 45-48 After this many of the Jews who had accompanied Mary and observed what Jesus did, believed in him. But some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. Consequently, the Pharisees and chief priests summoned the council and said, “What can we do? This man obviously shows many remarkable signs. If we let him go on doing this sort of thing we shall have everybody believing in him. Then we shall have the Romans coming and that will be the end of our holy place and our very existence as a nation.”

NEW 5-session COURSE for LENT commencing March 5th 2017 RECEIVING CHRIST in five different ways A course in five sessions for discussion groups & individuals Lenten studies will commence at: 12.00pm–1.00pm, Sunday 5th March in the Old Op Shop with Rev’d Robert Newton; 7.00pm-8.00pm, Monday 6th March in the Old Op Shop with Leonie Bird; and 2.00pm-3.00pm, Wednesday 8th March in the Vicarage with Rev’d Robert Holland. There are five one hour sessions in total. Please place your name on the sheet at the back of the church under the respective session you would like to join. Study booklets cost $10 each. Any enquiries should be directed to Rev’d Robert Newton or Leonie Bird – email leoniebird@vicbar.com.au. ‘To all who received him … he gave power to become children of God.’ (John 1.12.) This raises big questions. Aren’t we all children of God anyway? Just how can we receive Christ? And what does it mean to have ‘a relationship with God’? In a course crammed with discussable questions, John Young teases out from the New Testament at least three different ways in which we receive Christ. John’s course booklet is supplemented by four leading Christians, from a variety of backgrounds, on the course CD. Together they demonstrate that St John’s theology in his magisterial Gospel has very practical implications for our day-to-day lives. Session 1:

He chairs the Sandford St Martin Trust promoting excellence in religious broadcasting and is a member of the House of Lords. MARGARET SENTAMU is an independent diversity and leadership development consultant and a Non-executive director of the Leeds & York Mental Health Trust, and Traidcraft Plc. She is also a trustee and patron of several education, health and poverty charities. REVD DR KEN HOWCROFT is a former President of the Methodist Conference. He served the English-language Methodist congregation in Rome; establishing an ecumenical office there on behalf of the worldwide family of Methodist churches. THEODORA HAWKSLEY trained as a theologian before leaving her academic career to become a nun. She is currently a novice at the Bar Convent, York. The course booklet is written and by Canon John Young who worked for two Archbishops of York, and was for many years a member of the General Synod of the Church of England. A Canon Emeritus of York Minster and Co-Founder of York Courses, he’s written over 30 books/booklets. John’s work has been translated into several languages, including Chinese and Russian.
