Dear Parishioners, On a number of occasions God tested Abraham to prove his faith and to strengthen his hope in the promises that God made to him. Abraham obeyed willingly even when God asked him to sacrifice his only son Isaac. When the Israelites were sorely tested in Egypt for more than 400 years, they kept God's word and remembered his promise to save them. When God called Moses to free the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, God led them into the wilderness to his holy mountain at Mount Sinai. There Moses ascended the mountain and met with God face to face for 40 days in prayer and fasting (Exodus 24:18). The prophet Elijah was also led on a 40 day journey to the holy mountain at Mount Sinai to seek the face of God. In I Kings 19:8 we are told God sustained Elijah with bread from heaven. Jesus was no exception to this pattern of testing and preparation with prayer and fasting. He was led into the wilderness for 40 days without food or shelter to seek the face of his heavenly Father. Where did Jesus find the strength to survive the desert's harsh conditions and the tempter's seduction? He fed on God's word and found strength in doing his Father's will. Satan will surely tempt us and he will try his best to get us to choose our will over God's will. If he can't make us renounce our faith or sin mortally, he will then try to get us to make choices that will lead us, little by little, justifying ourselves all along the way, further and further from what God wants for us. The Lord Jesus is ever ready to pour out his Spirit upon us that we may have the strength and courage we need to resist sin and to reject the lies and deceits of Satan. God wants us to "fight the good fight of the faith" (1 Timothy 6:12) with the power and strength which comes from the Holy Spirit. Do you rely on the Lord for your strength and help? Yours In Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: Forty days and forty nights NEH 67

1 Forty days and forty nights Thou wast fasting in the wild; Forty days and forty nights Tempted, and yet undefiled.

4 And if Satan vexing sore, Flesh or spirit should assail, Thou, his Vanquisher before, Grant we may not faint nor fail.

2 Sunbeams scorching all the day, Chilly dewdrops nightly shed, Prowling beasts about thy way, Stones thy pillow, earth thy bed.

5 So shall we have peace divine; Holier gladness ours shall be; Round us, too, shall angels shine, Such as ministered to Thee.

3 Let us thine endurance share, And awhile from joys abstain, With thee watching unto prayer, Strong with Thee to suffer pain.

6 Keep, O keep us, Saviour dear, Ever constant by Thy side; That with Thee we may appear At the eternal Eastertide.

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Sentence: We do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. Matthew 4.4

The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 4

Kyrie eleison

(How setting)

The Collect Almighty God, whose Son fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet did not sin: give us grace to direct our lives in obedience to your will, that, as you know our weakness, so we may know your power to save; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Genesis 2.15-17; 3.1-7 15 Then

the LORD God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and guard it. 16 He told him, “You may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, 17 except the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad. You must not eat the fruit of that tree; if you do, you will die the same day.” 3 Now the snake was the most cunning animal that the LORD God had made. The snake asked the woman, “Did God really tell you not to eat fruit from any tree in the garden?” 2 “We may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden,” the woman answered, 3 “except the tree in the middle of it. God told us not to eat the fruit of that tree or even touch it; if we do, we will die.” 4 The snake replied, “That's not true; you will not die. 5 God said that because he knows that when you eat it, you will be like God[a] and know what is good and what is bad.” 6 The woman saw how beautiful the tree was and how good its fruit would be to eat, and she thought how wonderful it would be to become wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, and he also ate it. 7 As soon as they had eaten it, they were given understanding and realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and covered themselves. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 32

1. Blessed is he whose unrighteousness | is for|given: and whose | sin | is | covered. 2. Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord im|puteth no | sin: and in whose | spirit there | is no | guile. 3. For while I | held my | tongue: my bones consumed away | through my | daily com|plaining. 4. For thy hand is heavy upon me | day and | night: and my moisture is | like the | drought in | summer. 5. I will acknowledge my sin | unto | thee: and mine un|righteousness | have I not | hid. 6. I said I will confess my sins | unto the | Lord: and so thou forgavest the | wickedness | of my | sin. 7. For this shall every one that is godly make his prayer unto thee, in a time when thou | mayest be | found: but in the great water-floods | they shall | not come | nigh him. 8. Thou art a place to hide me in, thou shalt pre|serve me from | trouble: thou shalt compass me a|bout with | songs of de|liverance.

7

9. I will inform thee and teach thee in the way wherein | thou shalt | go: and I will | guide thee | with mine | eye. 10. Be ye not like to horse and mule, which have no | under|standing: whose mouths must be held with bit and bridle | lest they | fall up|on thee. 11. Great plagues remain | for the un|godly: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord, mercy embraceth | him on | every | side. 12. Be glad O ye righteous, and rejoice | in the | Lord: and be joyful all | ye that are | true of | heart. Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men.

Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 2.1-5, 13-17 12 This,

then, is what happened. Sin made its entry into the world through one man, and through sin, death. The entail of sin and death passed on to the whole human race, and no one could break it for no one was himself free from sin. 13-14 Sin, you see, was in the world long before the Law, though I suppose, technically speaking, it was not “sin” where there was no law to define it. Nevertheless death, the complement of sin, held sway over mankind from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sin was quite unlike Adam’s. Adam, the first man, corresponds in some degree to the man who has to come. 15 But the gift of God through Christ is a very different matter from the “account rendered” through the sin of Adam. For while as a result of one man’s sin death by natural consequence became the common lot of men, it was by the generosity of God, the free giving of the grace of one man Jesus Christ, that the love of God overflowed for the benefit of all men. 16 Nor is the effect of God’s gift the same as the effect of that one man’s sin. For in the one case one man’s sin brought its inevitable judgment, and the result was condemnation. But, in the other, countless men’s sins are met with the free gift of grace, and the result is justification before God. 17 For if one man’s offence meant that men should be slaves to death all their lives, it is a far greater thing that through another man, Jesus Christ, men by their acceptance of his more than sufficient grace and righteousness, should live all their lives like kings! 18-19 We see, then, that as one act of sin exposed the whole race of men to God’s judgment and condemnation, so one act of perfect righteousness presents all men freely acquitted in the sight of God. One man’s disobedience placed all men under the threat of condemnation, but one man’s obedience has the power to present all men righteous before God. 20-21 Now we find that the Law keeps slipping into the picture to point the vast extent of sin. Yet, though sin is shown to be wide and deep, thank God his grace is wider and deeper still! The whole outlook changes—sin used to be the master of men and in the end handed them over to death: now grace is the ruling factor, with righteousness as its purpose and its end the bringing of men to the eternal life of God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD 9

Gradual Hymn: Lord Jesus, think on me NEH 70

1. Lord Jesus, think on me, and purge away my sin; from earthborn passions set me free, and make me pure within.

4. Lord Jesus, think on me, nor let me go astray; through darkness and perplexity point thou the heavenly way.

2. Lord Jesus, think on me with care and woe opprest; let me thy loving servant be, and taste thy promised rest.

6. Lord Jesus, think on me, that, when the flood is past, I may the eternal brightness see, and share thy joy at last. Synesius of Cyrene c.375–430 tr. Allen William Chatfield 1808–96

3. Lord Jesus, think on me, amid the battle’s strife; in all my pain and misery be thou my health and life.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 4 beginning at the 1st verse.

4 1-2 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit up into the desert, to be tempted by the devil. After a fast of forty days and nights he was very hungry. 3 “If you really are the Son of God,” said the tempter, coming to him, “tell these stones to turn into loaves.” 4 Jesus answered, “The scripture says ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’.” 5-6 Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the highest ledge of the Temple. “If you really are the Son of God,” he said, “Throw yourself down. For the scripture says—‘He shall give his angels charge concerning you,’ and ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone’.” 7 “Yes,” retorted Jesus, “and the scripture also says ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God’.” 8-9 Once again the devil took him to a very high mountain, and from there showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their magnificence. “Everything there I will give you,” he said to him, “if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 “Away with you, Satan!” replied Jesus, “the scripture says, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only you shall serve’.” 11 Then the devil let him alone, and the angels came to him and took care of him.

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

THE BAPTISM When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church. Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection. While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a child’s character. In this service of baptism we bring Fred into God’s presence that he may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.

The Baptism party gathers around the font. The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit? A/ I do. Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Fred for baptism? A/ I will. Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage him in the life and faith of the Christian community? A/ I will. Q/ As your life will be an example to Fred, will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions? A/ I will. Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy? A/ I will. Priest to the congregation: You have heard our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? ALL: WE WILL. Priest: Almighty God lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. AMEN. 14

Prayers and Blessing of the water [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Fred may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in him where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom. And now we give you thanks that you have called Fred to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. + Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that all who are baptized may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

An affirmation of faith Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming the faith of the church. Do you believe in God the Father? A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? A/: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN. 15

The Baptism Priest: Fred Graeme Donald, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, AMEN. I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ’s own forever. (Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used in anointing to symbolize being chosen in God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in Christ.)

Live as a disciple of Christ; fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. ALL: Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. Priest: God has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. ALL: Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Priest: God has called you into his church. ALL: We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God. Prayers for the child, parents and godparents Merciful God, in your infinite love you have made a new covenant with us in Jesus Christ, promising to be our God and the God of our children. Enable all who are baptized in your name to live as your faithful people. Fulfil your promises for Fred, we pray, and grant that he may grow in your faith and service. We pray for Kristen, Clint and Alby, that in your Spirit of wisdom, Fred’s family may grow in your love, and their home share in the joy of your eternal kingdom. And we pray for Fred’s godparents, Andrea and Daniel; enable them to share with their godson what you have revealed to us of your love in your holy gospel. We ask this in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ, AMEN. Children’s Show, Tell and Discuss.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand) {Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 16

Offertory Hymn: O Jesus, I have promised TiS 595

1. O Jesus, I have promised to serve you to the end; Lord, be for ever near me, my master and my friend: I shall not fear the battle if you are by my side, nor wander from the pathway if you will be my guide.

3. O let me hear you speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; Lord, speak to reassure me, to chasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, true guardian of my soul.

2. Still let me feel you near me: the world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, and tempting sounds I hear; my foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw me nearer, and shield my soul from sin.

4. Lord, let me see your footmarks and in them plant my own; that I may follow boldly and in your strength alone; O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end; and then in heaven receive me, my Saviour and my friend. John Ernest Bode 1816–74 alt. Music by permission Oxford University Press

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Bread of the world, Scottish Trad. arr. Alan Bullard Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD) 20

Final Hymn: O Master, let me walk with thee TiS 601

1. O Master, let me walk with thee in lowly paths of service free; thy secret tell; help me to bear the strain of toil, the fret of care. 2. Help me the slow of heart to move by some clear winning word of love; teach me the wayward feet to stay and guide them in the homeward way. 3. Teach me thy patience; still with thee in closer, dearer company, in work that keeps faith sweet and strong, in trust that triumphs over wrong, 4. in hope that sends a shining ray far down the future’s broadening way, in peace that only thou canst give, with thee, O Master, let me live. NEW 5-session COURSE for LENT commencing March 5th 2017 RECEIVING CHRIST in five different ways A course in five sessions for discussion groups & individuals Lenten studies will commence at: 12.00pm–1.00pm, Sunday 5th March in the Old Op Shop with Rev’d Robert Newton; 7.00pm-8.00pm, Monday 6th March in the Old Op Shop with Leonie Bird; and 2.00pm-3.00pm, Wednesday 8th March in the Vicarage with Rev’d Robert Holland. Any enquiries should be directed to Rev’d Robert Newton or Leonie Bird – email leoniebird@vicbar.com.au. ‘To all who received him … he gave power to become children of God.’ (John 1.12.) This raises big questions. Aren’t we all children of God anyway? Just how can we receive Christ? And what does it mean to have ‘a relationship with God’? In a course crammed with discussable questions, John Young teases out from the New Testament at least three different ways in which we receive Christ. John’s course booklet is supplemented by four leading Christians, from a variety of backgrounds, on the course CD. Together they demonstrate that St John’s theology in his magisterial Gospel has very practical implications for our day-to-day lives. Session 1:

Receiving Christ: as children of God

Session 2:

Receiving Christ: in the stranger and the needy

Session 3:

Receiving Christ: in Holy Communion

Session 4:

Receiving Christ: through prayer and fellowship

Session 5:

‘Christ in you, the hope of glory’ (Colossians 1.27) 25
