The desire to find spiritual direction has led to a growth in the number of people taking time out of their busy lives to make retreats to religious communities or places or prayer and solitude. There are two parts to this process: finding the way, and acting on it. The latter part is generally harder.

Easter traditions The story of Easter makes up a fundamental aspect of Christian theology. While Good Friday marks Jesus's crucifixion, Easter Sunday is a day for Christians to celebrate his resurrection.

Following Jesus's arrest and crucifixion, he was buried in a tomb. While the next part of the story varies according to different accounts, most follow the theme of female followers of Jesus going to visit the tomb and finding the stone rolled away from the opening with Jesus's body missing. Jesus went on to appear to his followers several times before his ascension into heaven. The resurrection of Christ is an important part of Christian belief because of its association with salvation.

Christians started celebrating the tradition of Easter with a feast soon after the time period of the resurrection. The time of year was chosen because Jesus celebrated the Passover shortly before his crucifixion, so it is believed to be around the actual time.

In pagan times Easter was a celebration of fertility, and many cultures associated the celebration with Eostre, the Germanic goddess of fertility. Christians imbued the practice with religious significance.

The Easter egg hunt originated in pagan spring festivals celebrating fertility. It features eggs hidden by the mythical Easter bunny, Children go looking for eggs to put in their Easter egg basket. In the days before Easter, many families decorate hard-boiled eggs to hunt.

A significant theme for Easter is

rebirth, which flowers can emulate and symbolise. Easter Lilies are believed to have grown in the Garden of Gethsemane, the site of Jesus's arrest. Red tulips, symbolise Jesus's shed blood.

Italy holds reenactments of the Easter story in public squares. Cyprus holds bonfires in the yards of schools and churches.

In Germany, eggs are hidden in trees.

In the United Kingdom some participate in rolling eggs downhill and others perform the Pace Egg play.

A big part of Jamaican celebration is to eat a spiced bun that contains raisins and cheese.

In Scandinavian countries celebrators ski and relax at cabins in the mountains.

Some areas may features children in costumes going door to door for candy or flowers. Many Nordic countries include salmon or other fish in a feast.

In Australia, the Easter bilby delivers eggs rather than the Easter Bunny, as rabbits are an agricultural pest.

Easter is an important holiday in Greece, where on the island of Corfu, residents toss pots of water out of windows, following the Venetian tradition, and bake cakes in the shape of doves.

The Easter Bunny is a result of folkloric tradition. Their association with the holiday comes from their ability to procreate, making them symbols of fertility.

German settlers brought the Easter Bunny tradition to America in the 1700s.

But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory forever and ever Amen.’ I Timothy 1:12-17 Dear Parishioners, We usually don’t spend too much time thinking about our own sinfulness. On occasion, of course, our feelings of guilt overwhelm us. We can’t stop thinking about our sinfulness. If we are in that situation, we may need to talk that out with someone.

Apart from times like that, we don’t think much about our own sinfulness. We have ways of getting around that. We don’t think about our sins because we are too appalled at the sins of others. The news media throws in our faces the outrageous sins of other people. We overdose on the spectacular murders, war crimes, cruelty, child abuse, and depravity of others. We see such things and become too complacent about our own sins. As long as we are not as bad as some people, we must be doing okay. Our emotional needs keep us from thinking about our sins. Most of the time we need all of our emotional energy just to get by. Life seems to throw everything at us that it can. We don’t have time or energy left to think about our sins. We come to church to gain the emotional strength to survive the coming week, not to hear someone pound the pulpit about what sinners we are. What is front and centre for us are not our sins, but the ways others have sinned against us. We carry the memory of grudges big and small around inside of us. The sins against us that hurt the most are the ones that someone got away with or that no one ever noticed. How dare anyone bring up our sinfulness when we have been so sinned against! No matter how much we don’t want to hear about our sinfulness, we need to hear about it. We fool ourselves. We let ourselves off the hook. We buy our own excuses. There’s a danger to that. As we enter Lent, a time of reflection, repentance, fasting and good works, 1 Timothy gives us an honest reflection on sinfulness. As the passage reminds us, Paul never hid from his sinfulness. In Romans 7, he speaks for people of all ages who have grappled with temptation: ‘For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do.’ Romans 7:18-19. The book of Acts depicts barbaric things Paul did. He persecuted members of the early church. He held everybody’s jackets when they stoned Stephen. He hauled off men and women to prison. In Acts, Paul was an angry control freak. This passage uses three terms to describe Paul: blasphemer, persecutor, man of violence. These three terms reveal the comprehensive nature of Paul’s sinfulness and teach us something about our own. If we examine these three terms carefully, we see what our sin does to us. Blasphemy is an insult to God. Persecution is cruelty to someone else.

Violence is an attempt to control, arising out of the anger and hate within us. Many things cause this isolation and estrangement. Part of it, but not all of it, is our own rebellion against God. In our pride, we reject God’s offer of grace and healing.

We stubbornly refuse to submit ourselves to God’s will. That rebellion is not the whole story, however. We live in an imperfect world, a creation that is not what God intends. As Paul himself says, the creation is subjected to futility and in bondage to decay (Romans 8:20-21). The sin that holds the creation in bondage holds us in bondage as well. We are influenced by social, economic, and spiritual forces beyond our control. We cannot just excuse our bad behaviour, but we are part of a larger problem. Alienation is part of the human experience. Scripture gives numerous examples of people who experienced God as far away. It is true that sometimes we separate ourselves from God, but it is also true that sometimes God seems far away and we don’t know why. We feel like the psalmist who cried out, ‘How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?’ (Psalm 13:1). Our sinfulness is something we do, we cause, and also something that is part of the whole creation, something we are trapped in. I Timothy calls us to be honest about our part in our sinfulness, to own it, to face it, to admit it. If we feel blocked from God, what is our part in that? If we are cut off from other people, how much of that is our fault? If we are not at peace within ourselves, how are we to blame? If we deny our part, we can never feel the cleansing, the release, or the joy of being forgiven. We can never move past where we are. We can never feel reconnected to God. We can never sop up the bitterness of our broken relationships. If we do not confess our sins, if we continue to deny them, we may dupe ourselves into thinking we have got away with them. Eventually, though, our sins leak out. Our wellguarded secret is put on display for the world to see. In my experience truth sooner or later wills out. The author of this passage, reflecting on Paul’s life, called Paul a “man of violence.” We have said that violence is a sign of unresolved anger within us. That anger can come out against other people, or we can turn inward against ourselves. Anecdotal scientific evidence has pointed over the years to how unresolved anger may have played a part in the growth of an individual’s cancer. This scripture calls us to confront our sin. Perhaps we can do that with soul-searching. Perhaps we need the guidance of another person. Perhaps we need to quit hiding from ourselves. As much as I Timothy pushes us to be honest about our sins, it is even more confident about God’s grace and forgiveness. The author of this passage reflected on Paul’s guilt, but only to show the depth of God’s forgiveness. As angry and mean as Paul was, God never gave up on him. This passage shows that God understands the reasons behind our sins: our ignorance, our hurts, and our fear. God heals as well as forgives. We as Christians have to marvel at what God did with Paul. Paul was angry, mean, remorseless, and the control freak of all control freaks. God turned him into the man who could write the tender, beautiful words of 1 Corinthians 13. In the words of the passage, ‘in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience’ (v. 16).

Where are we with our sinfulness today? Are we denying it, bottling it up? Are we only too aware of some sin and the guilt won’t let us go? God is patient with us. God can give us the courage to face what is inside of us. God is stronger than our sin and the causes behind it. God can release us, cleanse us, strengthen us, and enable us to move forward. God can get us over the hump if we are held back by our sins. Let us accept God’s mercy; let us celebrate God’s patience. Köder’s wartime experiences profoundly influenced his depictions of the Passion of Christ and human suffering and evil.

This can be seen particularly in his Stations of the Cross and his Misereor Hunger Cloth. In later life Köder’s work became world famous and he won many awards, including, in 1985, the honorary title of Monsignor and the Order of Merit from Pope John Paul II. He was a deeply modest man and found those who came to see ‘the great artist’ a trial. In a newspaper interview he once remarked, “People come to Ellwangen asking to see the painter. If they’re that interested in the painter, then they haven’t understood the paintings”.

His works have inspired countless reproductions, books of meditations and posters and a fully illustrated Bible.’

We know this is a delicate topic! A bequest is an instruction within your Will that reserves part of your estate (such as possessions, shares, bonds, or money) for a particular beneficiary.

It is a subject that HTK has not addressed directly, at least in the recent past. But Bequests are an important source of funding for entities like us, and everyone in the Parish should consider whether they might make a

provision in their Will to the benefit of Holy Trinity.

Leaving a bequest is one of the most personal ways you can support the Parish. It is an opportunity to make a gift that you may not otherwise be able to make during your lifetime. Such gifts will be of special importance to the Parish regardless of the value involved.

Multi-Faith service conducted at Government House By Leonie Bird On Monday 1 February 2016 a MultiFaith service was conducted at Government House at the invitation of Her Excellency The Honourable Linda Dessau AM, the Governor of Victoria.

In accordance with tradition the Victorian legal profession and members of the Victorian Parliament mark the commencement of the legal year with a variety of religious services and secular events. Attendees included the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Attorney General of Victoria, the Victorian Legal Services Commissioner, members of the judiciary, solicitors and barristers.

The service address was delivered by Ms Helen Kapalos Chairperson of the

Victorian Multicultural Commission.

This was a remarkable ceremony in many respects and in particular the joint participation of leaders from all faith communities including the Buddhists, the Christian Orthodox church, Assistant Bishop Genieve Blackwell, Bishop Kay Goldsworthy, Bishop Paul White, Dr Andreas Lowe Dean of St Pauls Cathedral, and leaders from the Salvation Army, the Victorian Council of Churches, the Welsh Church of Melbourne and the Uniting Church of Australia. Leaders from the Hindu, Islamic and Jewish communities also attended and participated in the service consisting of prayers and readings,

derived from the traditions of Judaic, Christian, Hindu, Islamic, and Buddhist faiths.

Although this service was held in Government House, a secular state location, its content and activity was centred on a multiplicity of faiths coming together to express a unity of purpose and good will. It was a wonderful demonstration of the diversity and strength of the Victorian community and the commitment of the legal profession to acknowledge our multi-faith heritage in the context of each faith community. It represented all that is good in each of the represented faiths. A large cross section of the legal profession was also present.

Update on Parish Centre Development and Master Plan by Alan Wilson Since the last article on the Parish Centre in the July 2015 edition of Trinity Times, we achieved a very pleasing result from the August auction of the Peel Street Car Park. The sale was successfully settled on 21st December, and our share of the proceeds (Diocese took a cut!) is now on deposit with Anglican Funds.

Parish Centre. Since then our architects Atelier Wagner have engaged with the other consultants we’ll need for the project, and we are now entering the detailed design and quantity survey phase. Once this is complete and we have a Building Permit from Council, Diocese will run a tendering and selection process to choose a builder. In the absence of a major benefactor to pay for renovations to the Vicarage, the most likely scenario is that we will need to borrow to fund a refurbishment and repurposing for commercial leasing.

Reports from around the world February 2016 compiled by Irene Shorthouse Dr Freier in key role Website of the General Synod of the Anglican Church of Australia 18 January 2016 Melbourne Archbishop Philip Freier, Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia, has been elected to the worldwide Communion’s Primates’ Standing Committee, part of the global Anglican Church’s top consultative group, the Anglican Consultative Council.

He was one of five Primates voted on to the committee, by regions, at last week’s meeting of the world’s 38 Anglican Primates at Canterbury, England, called by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

Dr Freier represents the Asia Pacific region of the global church, which claims 85 million members in 165 countries, the world’s third largest Christian group after the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches.

Almost two-thirds of those running England's Anglican cathedrals are concerned about their finances BBC 31 January 2016 Of the 38 cathedrals who responded fully [to a BBC survey], 26 said they were "worried" or "very worried" about the future.

Last year, the Church of England gave £8.3m to the historic buildings but the cash does not cover all of their needs.

Some cathedrals are now looking to new ways of fundraising including hiring the buildings out as venues.

Of the 42 Anglican cathedrals in England, 38 are Grade I listed and expensive to maintain - with some absorbing daily running costs of £4,000.

The challenge lies in maintaining a balance between needing to raise large sums of money and keeping the building as a spiritual space.

Dignity for all, says US Primate Church Times 2 February 2016 THE Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States, Dr Katharine Jefferts Schori, preached on Sunday at St Paul’s Cathedral, where she urged the congregation to take action against injustice in the world.

Dr Jefferts Schori, who was in London to attend a meeting of the Anglican Communion Standing Committee, called on church people to be “ready, willing, and able” to help those who are suffering injustice or indignity.

Prophetic work, she said, was “about more abundant life for the whole world, and it is about a home everywhere, a home for all. Prophetic work is about challenging human systems that ignore or deny the innate dignity of all of God’s creation. We lose our dignity when we tolerate indignity for some. The work of the cross is the most life-giving journey we know.”

There was a tendency “to insist that some are not worthy of respect, that dignity doesn’t apply to the poor, or to immigrants, or to women, or Muslims, or gay and lesbian people”.

Justin Welby made the announcement after a meeting of primates from the Anglican Communion in Canterbury.

In the UK, an act of Parliament passed in 1928 allowed for Easter Sunday to be fixed on the first Sunday after the second Saturday in April.

However, this has never been activated and Easter has remained variable, determined by the moon's cycle.

Easter is the most important Christian festival, as it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ following his death by crucifixion on Good Friday.

The archbishop said he was in talks with Pope Francis, Coptic leader Pope Tawadros, and the leader of the Orthodox church Patriarch Bartholomew.

Mr Welby said he hoped the change would happen "in between five and 10 years time".

"I would love to see it before I retired", he said, although he warned the first attempt to make such a change was in the 10th Century.

An Anglican source told the BBC “there had been 15 attempts to agree a common date since then”.

NZ Bishops add voice to euthanasia opposition Anglican Communion News Service 2 February 2016

Nine New Zealand bishops have made a submission to the country’s Parliament urging no change to the law where the “right to die” is concerned.

In their written submission the bishops say they believe “that legalising medically-assisted dying will open the gateway to many foreseen and unforeseen consequences which will be damaging to individuals and the social fabric.”

The bishops, who include seven serving and two retired members, say they recognise “the great distress of patients, families and friends in the case of some intractable and prolonged terminal illnesses”.

They ‘recommend that resources to enhance palliative care and counselling support for both patients and their whanau [family] be increased’.

One hour to get out: France bulldozes Calais ‘Jungle’ mosque, church & school RT Question more 1 February 2016

Bulldozers moved in to the ‘jungle’ refugee camp in Calais this morning to demolish the mosque, St Michael's Church and other nearby structures.

St Michael's, a small makeshift chapel serving mainly Orthodox Ethiopian Christians among the migrants, was among several parts of the camp that were bulldozed. It became briefly controversial last year when the BBC filmed part of its religious flagship Songs of Praise programme from the camp.

Sad to report that the Church has now been demolished despite the Prefecture promises to not touch places of worship.

There was just time for a last minute prayer before the machinery tore in. One of the church members stood by in dignified silence, clutching the remaining cross from the Church roof, the charity reported.

And despite promises to the contrary, at around 9am the Calais Prefecture also bulldozed the mosque which was in the newly created "buffer zone". Previously they had agreed the mosque, church and school would not be affected during operations to clear a safe space between the camp and the public roads.

Hundreds die at St James Anglican Church on Christmas Day Anglicansonline 26 December 2015

The headline in the Orillia Packet and Times actually said that for about two hours before someone noticed the error and revised it to 'Hundreds dine', referring to the Christmas Dinner at St James in Orillia, Diocese of Toronto.
