Dear Parishioners, What lesson can we learn from this parable in the Gospel of Luke? The dishonest steward is commended for his shrewdness. The original meaning of "shrewdness" is "practical wisdom" or "prudence". It is the ability to deal with a given situation, to see what needs to be done and to do it. A shrewd person exercises foresight, discernment, and judgment (the ability to see through and understand a situation and what will likely happen if he doesn't take appropriate action). Three other parables where Jesus commends this kind of practical wisdom are the parables of the wise builder who built his house on a rock (Matthew 24:7), the wise steward who orders his household well (Matthew 24:45; Luke 12:42), and the wise virgins who remembered the oil for their lamps (Matthew 25:2-9).

Jesus commends his listeners to be wise and prudent not just in the exercise of their material and financial resources, but more importantly in how they use these resources for advancing God's kingdom and the work of the gospel. What we invest our time, money, and material resources in shows what we treasure or value the most. Jesus warns us to invest in and not neglect what is most important and crucial – that which lasts forever. When we invest in God's kingdom – his kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy (Romans 14:17) – we are not only securing our relationship with God for all eternity, we are also promoting the spread of the Gospel and the advancement of God's kingdom on earth. How we invest our lives and resources today has consequences not just for tomorrow or for the rest of our earthly lives but for eternity as well. How invested are you in Holy Trinity Kew this small and important part of the kingdom of God and in the things that last for eternity?

True wealth consists not in what we keep but in what we give away. What is the enemy of generosity? It's calculation, the desire to control our resources to manipulate an outcome that suits our agenda. True generosity does not impoverish the giver, but enriches that person a hundredfold! Generosity expands the soul; calculation contracts it. God is generous and superabundant in lavishing his gifts upon us. We can never out give God. He shares all that he has with us. Do you know the joy and freedom of a generous heart and liberal giving?

God and mammon. What is mammon? Mammon stands for material wealth or possessions or whatever tends to control our appetites and desires. There is one Master alone who has the power to set us free from the slavery of sin and addiction. That Master is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Possessions and material resources are a great responsibility. The Lord expects us to use them honestly and responsibly and to put them at his service and the service of others. We are God's servants and all that we have belongs to him. He expects us to make a good return on what he gives us. God loves generosity and he gives liberally to those who share his gifts with others. Jesus makes clear that our hearts must either be possessed by God's love or our hearts will be possessed by the love of something else. Where is your treasure?

THE BAPTISM

When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church.

Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection.

While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a child’s character. In this service of baptism we bring Charlotte into God’s presence that she may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.

The Baptism party gathers around the font.

The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

A/ I do.

Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Charlotte for baptism?

Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage her in the life and faith of the Christian community?

Prayers and Blessing of the water [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Charlotte may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in her where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel.

We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom.

And now we give you thanks that you have called Charlotte to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. + Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that all who are baptized may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

Here is the text of the letter: Dear brothers and sisters, The proposed plebiscite on same-sex marriage has been one of the more contentious topics in 2016. Individual Anglicans have adopted a variety of positions taken in good conscience based on their Christian understanding of the principles and issues, and this is right and proper.

Personally, I welcome the plebiscite, though with strong reservations that we must guard the tenor of the debate, and keep it positive. The Government promised a plebiscite in campaigning for the July election and, having been elected, they have the reasonable expectation of honouring this commitment. Further, those who oppose same-sex marriage will surely find it easier to accept it becoming approved in law if they have been given a vote. It is of course, far from certain at the present time that the measures will gain parliamentary approval.

If the plebiscite does happen it will be important that Christians – and others – vote according to their conscience and their view of what is best for society, and that 24

the Government brings legislation to enact the will of the people. It is proper to expect that the Parliament should honour the results of the plebiscite.

Should the vote be in favour of same-sex marriage as suggested by the opinion polls, the Church must accept that this is now part of the landscape. We can still stand for and offer holy matrimony between a man and a woman as a sacred ordinance given by God, while accepting that the state has endorsed a wider view of marriage – as, indeed, the state has endorsed de facto relationships by legislating similar protections to those offered by marriage for people in such relationships.

The doctrine of the Book of Common Prayer remains unchanged, that marriage is between a man and a woman, under God, forsaking all others until death parts them. I do not believe that the Anglican Church in Australia is likely to revise its doctrine of marriage.

But that said, the Church also understands the desire of two people to express their commitment of love and self-sacrifice to each other, and that Christians have not always shown the respect or perspective they should. I am very concerned that the discussion does not become harsh or vilifying – on either side, for it is not only Christians who have sometimes failed on this score.

We understand that this is not a theoretical issue for many people, but one that directly impinges on their lives. We understand that sometimes gays, lesbians and others have felt judged and rejected, even ostracised, inside the Church and that we have to be much more pastorally sensitive in future.

Whether this is the threshold event that many in our church think or whether the widening of marriage happened many years ago and further widening is inevitable remains to be seen. What does matter is that we approach this question with prayer, confidence in the Church’s teaching as well as kindness in our speech towards those with whom we disagree.

Pirate Church: Booty Call - Thursday 29 September, 7.30pm Glen Iris Rd, Uniting Church, 200 Glen Iris Rd, Glen Iris Pirate Church is what happens when a priest and a seminary dropout create a comedy show about religion. And pirates. It’s a loving satire about the wacky world of religion. The catch is that’s it being done by two people who are themselves believers. Admittedly, not very good ones.

Many thanks to those who have generously responded to the Vicar’s appeal for donations to the National Trust for the fabric and up-keep of our beautiful historic church as we enter a phase of urgent renovation. So far year to date (YTD) we have received $86,475 to add and make our total of $215,149 YTD. This is massive 41% increase in the corpus in less than one year.

We urgently need to replace our electrical system and stop the ingress of damp and water into our church to avoid further deterioration and make our worship centre safe. These monies will assist in protecting our Church into the future. However may I encourage you to continue to consider the National Trust as a suitable place for donations and also a consideration of Holy Trinity in your will as we endeavour to be good stewards and meet the further challenges of maintaining God’s House.

Dear Parishioners be advised of the change of eligibility rules for membership of the Parish Electoral Roll as of the 1st July 2014 as determined by the Melbourne Diocesan Synod: Without limiting other grounds on which a person may be taken to have regularly and habitually attended public worship in a worship centre in a parish, for the purposes of this section a person who has attended public worship at a worship centre 12 times in the preceding 12 months and three times in the preceding three months is considered to have regularly and habitually attended public worship at that worship centre.

When the Parish Electoral Roll Committee meets in October the above criteria will have to be applied without fear or favour. In plain English if you have not attended a public worship service 12 times during the year and 3 times in the preceding months of the Annual Meeting in mid-November your name will have to be deleted from the Parish Electoral Roll and you will not be eligible to vote or speak unless invited at the Annual Meeting.
