Dear Parishioners, What is the point of Jesus' story about a lost sheep and a lost coin? In Jesus' time shepherds normally counted their sheep at the end of the day to make sure all were accounted for. Since sheep by their very nature are very social, an isolated sheep can quickly become bewildered and even neurotic, and become easy prey for wolves and lions. The shepherd's grief and anxiety is turned to joy when he finds the lost sheep and restores it to the fold. The housewife who lost a coin faced something of an economic disaster, since the value of the coin would be equivalent to her husband's daily wage. What would she say to her husband when he returned home from work? They were poor and would suffer greatly because of the loss. Her grief and anxiety turn to joy when she finds the coin that she had misplaced. Both the shepherd and the housewife search until what they have lost is found. Their perseverance pays off. They both instinctively share their joy with the whole community. The poor are particularly good at sharing in one another's sorrows and joys. What was new in Jesus' teaching was the insistence that lost sinners must be sought out and not merely mourned for their separation from God and the community of the just. God does not rejoice in the loss of anyone, but desires that all be saved and restored to fellowship with him. That is why the whole community of heaven rejoices when one sinner is found and restored to fellowship with God. Seekers of the lost are much needed today. SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church and on web) The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. Holy Trinity Kew National Trust update. Many thanks to those who have generously responded to the the Vicar’s appeal for donations to the National Trust for the fabric and upkeep of our beautiful historic church as we enter a phase of urgent renovation. So far year to date (YTD) we have received $86,475 to add and make our total of $215,149 YTD. This is massive 41% increase in the corpus in less than one year. We urgently need to replace our electrical system and stop the ingress of damp and water into our church to avoid further deterioration and make our worship centre safe. These monies will assist in protecting our Church into the future. However may I encourage you to continue to consider the National Trust as a suitable place for donations and also a consideration of Holy Trinity in your will as we endeavour to be good stewards and meet the further challenges of maintaining God’s House. 9.4 Parish Governance Act 2014. Dear Parishioners be advised of the change of eligibility rules for membership of the Parish Electoral Roll as of the 1st July 2014 as determined by the Melbourne Diocesan Synod: Without limiting other grounds on which a person may be taken to have regularly and habitually attended public worship in a worship centre in a parish, for the purposes of this section a person who has attended public worship at a worship centre 12 times in the preceding 12 months and three times in the preceding three months is considered to have regularly and habitually attended public worship at that worship centre. When the Parish Electoral Roll Committee meets in October the above criteria will have to be applied without fear or favour. In plain English if you have not attended a public worship service 12 times during the year and 3 times in the preceding months of the Annual Meeting in mid-November your name will have to be deleted from the Parish Electoral Roll and you will not be eligible to vote or speak unless invited at the Annual Meeting. HOLY TRINITY KEW STUDY GROUPS CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVES – IS IT RIGHT? Postmodern Thought & Influence in Western Society A five session program consisting of a broad exploration and reflection about western society has been written by Rev’d Canon Graeme Winterton. The program aims to encourage discussion and reflection on Christianity in the context of changes in modern society. The course will commence on Sunday 14 August 2016 and finish in the week ending Sunday 18 September 2016. Topics set for discussion include – The Background of Change, Changed Thinking and Attitudes, Societal Impact, and The Heart of the Christian Faith. Two course booklets comprising Course Notes and a Study Guide are available for participants. Price $10.00 for the two booklets. These will be made available upon payment and prior to the commencement of each course. The group discussions will be conducted in three separate weekly sessions and led by Rev’d Robert Newton, Rev’d Robert Holland or Leonie Bird M.A (Theol).
