Dear Parishioners, The Gospel passage from Luke this morning offends against the values, which most people hold dear. Worse than that, it offends against the love commandment by enjoining hate. Matthew’s version sterilises the saying by converting ‘hate’ to ‘love less’. Jesus comes across as something of a loose cannon, firing off shots in all directions without much concern for the consequences. This does not equal the Jesus we find elsewhere. But before we “neutralise’ the saying, we do well to reel a little more in amazement. It is shocking and was intended to be shocking to Jesus’ audience and to us today. Why the dynamite? Clearly the notion is that the object to be dislodged will take some shifting. That object is family power. Family power and control which has become a cage, a prison and more often a comfortable and secure place in which to turn aside from one’s potential and the world’s challenge. The voice of Jesus articulates human need - one’s own and that of others - and calls people to discipleship. Discipleship means a relationship of learning and growth with Jesus as the teacher and God as God, not family. Domestication confines religion to the home and family. In Jesus’ teaching we regularly meet challenges directed against so-called family values. To read Jesus as encouraging literal hatred of one’s family is to miss the point and mishear the rhetoric. But such shocking rhetoric reflects a view that families can constrict growth and bring death rather than life. According to Mark, Jesus’ own (family) thought he was mad and sought in their terms to rescue him (3:20-21, 31-35). Yours In Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: Ye holy angels bright NEH 475

1. Ye holy angels bright, who wait at God’s right hand, or through the realms of light fly at your Lord’s command, assist our song, for else the theme too high doth seem for mortal tongue.

3. Ye saints who toil below, adore your heavenly King, and onward as ye go some joyful anthem sing; take what he gives and praise him still through good or ill, who ever lives!

2. You blessèd souls at rest, who ran this earthly race, and now, from sin released, behold the Saviour’s face, God’s praises sound, as in his sight with sweet delight ye do abound.

4. My soul, bear thou thy part: triumph in God above, and with a well-tuned heart sing thou the songs of love; Let all thy days till life shall end, Whate’er he send, Be filled with praise. Richard Baxter 1615–91 and John Hampden Gurney 1802–62.

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you.

3

Sentence: Whoever does not carry the cross and follow Jesus cannot be his disciple. Luke 14.27

The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

4

The Absolution Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Kyrie eleison

The Collect God of the ages, you call the Church to keep watch in the world and to discern the signs of the times: grant us the wisdom that your Spirit bestows, so that with courage we may proclaim your prophetic word, and complete the work you have set before us; through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Jeremiah 18:1-11 18 The LORD said to me, 2 “Go down to the potter's house, where I will give you my message.” 3 So I went there and saw the potter working at his wheel. 4 Whenever a piece of pottery turned out imperfect, he would take the clay and make it into something else. 5 Then the LORD said to me, 6 “Don't I have the right to do with you people of Israel what the potter did with the clay? You are in my hands just like clay in the potter's hands. 7 If at any time I say that I am going to uproot, break down, or destroy any nation or kingdom, 8 but then that nation turns from its evil, I will not do what I said I would. 9 On the other hand, if I say that I am going to plant or build up any nation or kingdom, 10 but then that nation disobeys me and does evil, I will not do what I said I would. 11 Now then, tell the people of Judah and of Jerusalem that I am making plans against them and getting ready to punish them. Tell them to stop living sinful lives—to change their ways and the things they are doing. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 139.1-5, 12-18

O Lord, you have searched me | out and | known me: you know when I sit or when I stand, you comprehend my | thoughts | long be|fore. 2 You discern my path and the places | where I | rest: you are ac|quainted with | all my | ways. 1

For there is not a | word· on my | tongue: but you Lord | know it | alto|gether. 4 You have encompassed me be|hind· and be|fore: and have | laid your | hand up|on me. 3

Such knowledge is too | wonderful | for me: so | high· that I | cannot en|dure it. 12 For you have created my | inward | parts: you knit me together | in my | mother’s | womb. 5

I will praise you, for | you are· to be | feared: fearful are your | acts and | wonderful your | works. 14 You knew my soul, and my bones were not | hidden | from you: when I was formed in secret, and | woven· in the | depths· of the | earth. 13

8

Your eyes saw my limbs when they were | yet im|perfect: and in your book were | all my | members | written; 16 Day by | day¡ they were | fashioned: and not | one was | late in | growing. 15

How deep are your thoughts to | me O | God: and how | great | is the | sum of them! 18 Were I to count them, they are more in number | than the | sand: were I to come to the | end¡ I would | still be | with you. 17

Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men.

Second Reading: Philemon 1-25 1-3 Paul,

prisoner for the sake of Jesus Christ, and brother Timothy to Philemon our much-loved fellow-worker, Apphia our sister and Archippus who is with us in the fight; to the church that meets in your house—grace and peace be to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. 4-7 I

always thank God for you, Philemon, in my constant prayers for you all, for I have heard how you love and trust both the Lord Jesus himself and those who believe in him. And I pray that those who share your faith may also share your knowledge of all the good things that believing in Jesus Christ can mean to us. It is your love, my brother, that gives us such comfort and happiness, for it cheers the hearts of your fellow Christians. 8-11 And although I could rely on my authority in Christ and dare to order you to do what I consider right, I am not doing that. No, I am appealing to that love of yours, a simple personal appeal from Paul the old man, in prison for Jesus Christ’s sake. I am appealing for my child. Yes I have become a father though I have been under lock and key, and the child’s name is—Onesimus! Oh, I know you have found him pretty useless in the past but he is going to be useful now, to both of us. 12-14 I

am sending him back to you: will you receive him as my son, part of me? I should have dearly loved to have kept him with me: he could have done what you would have done—looked after me here in prison for the Gospel’s sake. But I would do nothing without consulting you first, for if you have a favour to give me, let it be spontaneous and not forced from you by circumstances! 15-21 It

occurs to me that there has been a purpose in your losing him. You lost him, a slave, for a time; now you are having him back for good, not merely as a slave, but as a brother-Christian. He is already especially loved by me—how much more will you be able to love him, both as a man and as a fellow-Christian! You and I have so much in common haven’t we? Then do welcome him as you would welcome me. If you feel he has wronged or cheated you put it down to my account. I’ve written this with my own hand: I, Paul, hereby promise to repay you. (Of course I’m not stressing the fact that you might be said to owe me your very 10

soul!) Now do grant me this favour, my brother—such an act of love will do my old heart good. As I send you this letter I know you’ll do what I ask—I believe, in fact, you’ll do more. 22 Will

you do something else? Get the guest-room ready for me, for I have great hopes that through your prayers I myself will be returned to you as well! 23-25 Epaphras,

here in prison with me, sends his greetings: so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, all fellow-workers for God. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, amen. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: In Christ there is no East or West NEH 280 (Tune 15)

1. In Christ there is no east or west, in him no south or north, but one great fellowship of love throughout the whole wide earth. 2. Join hands, then, brothers of the faith, whate’er your race may be; who serves my Father as a son is surely kin to me. 3. In Christ now meet both east and west, in him meet south and north, all Christlike souls are one in him throughout the whole wide earth. William Arthur Dunkerley (‘John Oxenham’) 1852–1941

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA – Sung by ALL

12

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 14 beginning at the 25th verse.

25-27 Now

as Jesus proceeded on his journey, great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and spoke to them, “If anyone comes to me without ‘hating’ his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be a disciple of mine. The man who will not take up his cross and follow in my footsteps cannot be my disciple. 28-30 “If any of you wanted to build a tower, wouldn’t he first sit down and work out the cost of it, to see if he can afford to finish it? Otherwise, when he has laid the foundation and found himself unable to complete the building, everyone who sees it will begin to jeer at him, saying, ‘This is the man who started to build a tower but couldn’t finish it!’ 31-33 “Or, suppose there is a king who is going to war with another king, doesn’t he sit down first and consider whether he can engage the twenty thousand of the other king with his own ten thousand? And if he decides he can’t, then, while the other king is still a long way off, he sends messengers to him to ask for conditions of peace. So it is with you; only the man who says goodbye to all his possessions can be my disciple. 34-35 “Salt is a very good thing, but if salt loses its flavour, what can you use to restore it? It is no good for the ground and no good as manure. People just throw it away. Every man who has ears should use them!”

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

Offertory Hymn: Your hand, O God, has guided TiS 456

1. Your hand, O God, has guided your flock from age to age; the wondrous tale is written, full clear, on every page; your people owned your goodness, and we their deeds record; and both of this bear witness: one church, one faith, one Lord. 2. Your heralds brought glad tidings to greatest, as to least; they bade them rise, and hasten to share the great King’s feast; and this was all their teaching, in every deed and word, to all alike proclaiming one church, one faith, one Lord. 3. Through many a day of darkness, through many a scene of strife, the faithful few fought bravely to guard the nation’s life. Their gospel of redemption, sin pardoned, earth restored, was all in this enfolded: one church, one faith, one Lord.

4. Your mercy will not fail us, nor leave your work undone; with your right hand to help us, the victory shall be won; and then by all creation, your name shall be adored, and this shall be our anthem: one church, one faith, one Lord. Edward Hayes Plumptre 1821–91 alt.

17

Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER.

THE PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Priest: Lift up your hearts: People: We lift them to the Lord. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise...

Priest: ... Forever praising you and singing:

18

Priest: ‌. do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me

Priest: in songs of never ending praise:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. 19

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “The True and Living Bread, David Blackwell. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD) 20

Final Hymn: Let him to whom we now belong TiS 563

1. Let him to whom we now belong his sovereign right assert, and take up every thankful song and every loving heart. 2. He justly claims us for his own, who bought us with a price; as Christians live to Christ alone, to Christ alone we die. 3. We come in deep humility thine easy yoke to prove, and own it perfect liberty to serve the Lord we love. 4. Jesus, thine own at last receive, fulfil our hearts’ desire, and let us to thy glory live and in thy cause expire. 5. Our souls and bodies we resign; with joy we render thee our all, no longer ours, but thine to all eternity. Harmony from the Revised Church Hymnary 1927 by permission Oxford University Press Charles Wesley 1707–88 alt. v.3 Alfred Harold Wood 1896–1989

Many thanks to those who have generously responded to the the Vicar’s appeal for donations to the National Trust for the fabric and upkeep of our beautiful historic church as we enter a phase of urgent renovation. So far year to date (YTD) we have received $86,475 to add and make our total of $215,149 YTD. This is massive 41% increase in the corpus in less than one year. We urgently need to replace our electrical system and stop the ingress of damp and water into our church to avoid further deterioration and make our worship centre safe. These monies will assist in protecting our Church into the future. However may I encourage you to continue to consider the National Trust as a suitable place for donations and also a consideration of Holy Trinity in your will as we endeavour to be good stewards and meet the further challenges of maintaining God’s House. 9.4 Parish Governance Act 2014. Dear Parishioners be advised of the change of eligibility rules for membership of the Parish Electoral Roll as of the 1st July 2014 as determined by the Melbourne Diocesan Synod: Without limiting other grounds on which a person may be taken to have regularly and habitually attended public worship in a worship centre in a parish, for the purposes of this section a person who has attended public worship at a worship centre 12 times in the preceding 12 months and three times in the preceding three months is considered to have regularly and habitually attended public worship at that worship centre. When the Parish Electoral Roll Committee meets in October the above criteria will have to be applied without fear or favour. In plain English if you have not attended a public worship service 12 times during the year and 3 times in the preceding months of the Annual Meeting in mid-November your name will have to be deleted from the Parish Electoral Roll and you will not be eligible to vote or speak unless invited at the Annual Meeting.
