YOU ARE INVITED TO BREAKFAST AFTER TODAY’S SERVICE

Dear Parishioners, Who wants to be last? Isn't it only natural to desire respect and esteem from others? Jesus' parable of the guests invited to the marriage feast probes our motives for seeking honour and position. Self-promotion is most often achieved at the expense of others! What is true humility and why should we make it the hallmark of our life and action? True humility is not feeling bad about yourself, or having a low opinion of yourself, or thinking of yourself as inferior to others. Real humility frees us from preoccupation with ourselves, whereas a low self-opinion tends to focus our attention on ourselves. Humility is truth in self-understanding and truth in action. Viewing ourselves truthfully means seeing ourselves the way God sees us: O Lord, thou hast searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, Lord, you know it completely. (Psalm139:1-4). A humble person makes a realistic assessment of himself or herself without illusion or pretence to be something he or she is not. Humility is the queen of all the virtues because it enables us to view and judge ourselves correctly, the way God sees us. Humility frees us to love and serve others selflessly, for their sake, rather than our own. Paul the Apostle, gives us the greatest example and model of humility in the person of Jesus Christ, who emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, ...who humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross (Philippians 2:7-8). Yours in Christ, Fr Robert

Invocation:

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting:

The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU.

(see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Luke 14.11 The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. Kyrie eleison: Lord have mercy: R/: Lord have mercy Christ have mercy: R/: Christ have mercy Lord have mercy: R/: Lord have mercy 3

The Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect O God, you invite the humble and the sinful to take their place in the festive assembly of the new covenant: teach your Church always to honour the presence of the Lord in the poor and the outcast, so that we may learn to recognise each other as brothers and sisters gathered together around your table. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Jeremiah 2.4-13 Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. 5 Thus says the Lord: What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves? 6 They did not say, ‘Where is the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that no one passes through, where no one lives?’ 7 I brought you into a plentiful land to eat its fruits and its good things. But when you entered you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination. 8 The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’ Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit. 9 Therefore once more I accuse you, says the Lord, and I accuse your children’s children. 10 Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look, send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has ever been such a thing. 11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for something that does not profit. 12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord, 13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water. 4

Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

5

Psalm: 81.1, 10-16 1

O sing joyfully to God our strength: shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.

10

‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt: open wide your mouth, and I will fill it.

11

‘But my people would not listen to my voice: and Israel would have none of me.

12

‘So I left them to the stubbornness of their hearts: to walk according to their own designs.

13

‘If only my people would listen: if Israel would but walk in my ways,

14

‘I would soon put down their enemies: and turn my hand against their adversaries.

15

‘Those that hate the Lord would cringe before him: and their punishment would last for ever.

16

‘But Israel I would feed with the finest wheat: and satisfy you with honey from the rocks.’

Second Reading: Hebrews 13.1-8, 15-16 Let mutual love continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. 3 Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured. 4 Let marriage be held in honour by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. 5 Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you.’ 6 So we can say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?’ 7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. 15 Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. 1

Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 14 beginning at the 1st verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. 7 When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honour, he told them a parable. 8 ‘When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honour, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; 9 and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, “Give this person your place”, and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, “Friend, move up higher”; then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. 11 For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’ 12 He said also to the one who had invited him, ‘When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. 13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. 14 And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’ 1

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord, PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. SERMON

followed by a short time for reflection (copy of sermon available at back of church and on web)

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

9

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us pray for all people and for the Church throughout the world. Each petition of intercession or thanksgiving concludes with, Lord in your mercy, HEAR OUR PRAYER. We pray for: We pray for all who work for peace and justice. We pray for the members of Holy Trinity not able to worship with us: and all who care for them. We give thanks for the life of William (Bob) Reeve as we uphold him to your loving mercy, and we pray for all who mourn his death. We pray for those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith and whose year’s mind occurs around this time, Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith We may by your grace receive, Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

10

Jesus said: A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you. John 13.34 [Let us pray] We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution [Celebrant] Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 11

Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind. 13

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. (Richard of Chichester 1197-1253 AD)
