Dear Parishioners, This parable holds within in it a lesson in faithfulness and a clear understanding of what a covenant is supposed to be all about. Why is fidelity so important to God? For one, it's the foundation for any lasting and significant relationship. Fidelity allows us to persevere in living out a promise. The Lord is committed to his sons and daughters through a resilient love and fidelity towards us. That is what covenant means â€“ keeping one's word, promise, and commitment no matter how tough or problematic it gets. Faithfulness is a key characteristic quality of God and one that he expects of us. Fortunately for us God gives us the grace and power to be resilient and faithful. He also rewards those who are faithful. The joy and honour of being a son or daughter of God brings with it a breath-taking responsibility. The more he gives, the more he requires of us. The temptation while the Master is away is to mentally put up our feet on the table in proud self- entitled grandeur, going about our work, wearing the Emperorâ€™s new clothes, living on past glories, losing our humble resilience whilst all the time forgetting who is the real King and Lord of all. Our Parable has some shocking treatment in store for those who take for granted or abuse and neglect Godâ€™s grace and favour! How can we grow in faithfulness? God's grace points the way. When we are faithful, reliable and humble in the little tasks and promises we make and take, we learn to be faithful, reliable and humble in the bigger and more important duties and tasks entrusted to us. Are you ready to give God an account of your stewardship? Are you ready to serve him without counting the cost, without pride or ego? Why is fidelity or faithfulness so difficult? Australian society exalts freedom over fidelity and doesn't want or like to be bound to an unidentified or indeterminate future that appears to some to be the Kingdom of God. How wrong can they be? At a more basic level for those within the Church it can also be inconvenient and a drain on the pursuit of one's own interests when Church life and the Gospel seem to diverge from what we saw as important in the first place. We critically need to recover this virtue of fidelity, not only for our own sake, but for the sake of succeeding generations as well. If we want to pass on the faith then we need to first be faithful reliable and humble role models for those younger in the faith. Second Reading: Hebrews 11.1-3, 8-16 11 1-3 Now faith means putting our full confidence in the things we hope for, it means being certain of things we cannot see. It was this kind of faith that won their reputation for the saints of old. And it is after all only by faith that our minds accept as fact that the whole scheme of time and space was created by God’s command—that the world which we can see has come into being through principles which are invisible. 8-10 It was by faith that Abraham obeyed the summons to go out to a place which he would eventually possess, and he set out in complete ignorance of his destination. It was faith that kept him journeying like a foreigner through the land of promise, with no more home than the tents which he shared with Isaac and Jacob, co-heirs with him of the promise. For Abraham’s eyes were looking forward to that city with solid foundations of which God himself is both architect and builder. 11-12 It

was by faith that even Sarah gained the physical vitality to become a mother despite her great age, and she gave birth to a child when far beyond the normal years of child-bearing. She could do this because she believed that the one who had given the promise was utterly trustworthy. So it happened that from one man, who as a potential father was already considered dead, there arose a race “as numerous as the stars”, as “countless as the sands of the sea-shore”. 13-16 All

these whom we have mentioned maintained their faith but died without actually receiving God’s promises, though they had seen them in the distance, had hailed them as true and were quite convinced of their reality. They freely admitted that they lived on this earth as exiles and foreigners. Men who say that mean, of course, that their eyes are fixed upon their true home-land. If they had meant the particular country they had left behind, they had ample opportunity to return. No, the fact is that they longed for a better country altogether, nothing less than a heavenly one. And because of this faith of theirs, God is not ashamed to be called their God for in sober truth he has prepared for them a city in Heaven. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

THE BAPTISM When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church. Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection. While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a childâ€™s character. In this service of baptism we bring Jessica into Godâ€™s presence that she may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.

The Baptism party gathers around the font. The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit? A/ I do. Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Jessica for baptism? A/ I will. Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage her in the life and faith of the Christian community? A/ I will. Q/ As your life will be an example to Jessica, will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions? A/ I will. Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy? A/ I will. Priest to the congregation: You have heard our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Jessica may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in her where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom. And now we give you thanks that you have called Jessica to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. + Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that all who are baptized may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

An affirmation of faith Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming the faith of the church. Do you believe in God the Father? A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, Godâ€™s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: â€œGod be in my headâ€?, George Bayley. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Once you have received communion you may wish to pray the following prayer in thanksgiving: Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits which you have given us, for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us. HOLY TRINITY KEW STUDY GROUPS CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVES – IS IT RIGHT? Postmodern Thought & Influence in Western Society A five session program consisting of a broad exploration and reflection about western society has been written by Rev’d Canon Graeme Winterton. The program aims to encourage discussion and reflection on Christianity in the context of changes in modern society. The group discussions will be conducted in three separate weekly sessions and led by Rev’d Robert Newton, Rev’d Robert Holland or Leonie Bird M.A (Theol). Sessions will be conducted on Sunday [12 noon – 1:00 pm], Tuesday evenings [7:30 – 8:30 pm] and Wednesday afternoons [2:30 – 3:30 pm] If you wish to participate in discussions to reflect upon Christian faith in modern contemporary society you would be most welcome.
