Dear Parishioners, Jesus not only claims to speak the truth, he calls himself the very source of truth when he proclaims that he is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). Now Jesus promises to send his disciples the Spirit of truth who will guide them in understanding all that Jesus came to say and do. It is through the gift and working of the Holy Spirit, who enlightens our hearts and minds, that we come to understand that the Godhead is a trinity of persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The ultimate end, the purpose for which God created us, is the entry of God's creatures into the perfect unity of the blessed Trinity. In baptism we are called to share in the life of the Holy Trinity here on earth in faith and after death in eternal light. Origen (185-254 AD) an early church father wrote a beautiful prayer that sums up a powerful sense of appreciation of the Trinity: "May the Lord Jesus put his hands on our eyes also, for then we too shall begin to look not at what is seen but at what is not seen. May he open the eyes that are concerned not with the present but with what is yet to come, may he unseal the heart's vision, that we may gaze on God in the Spirit, through the same Lord, Jesus Christ, whose glory and power will endure throughout the unending succession of ages." Hymn: Holy, holy, holy! NEH 132
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty, early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty God in three persons, blessèd Trinity. Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.. Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, only thou art holy, there is none beside thee perfect in power, in love and purity. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty, all thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty God in three persons, blessèd Trinity! Reginald Heber 1783–1826
Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. 4
Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Sentence: Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? ‘The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago.’ Proverbs 8.1, 22 The Collect for Purity: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5
The Absolution (Celebrant) Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect Father, we praise you, that through your Word and Holy Spirit you created all things; you reveal your salvation in all the world through Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh; through your Holy Spirit you give us a share in your life and love: fill us with the vision of your glory, that we may always serve and praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Proverbs 8.1-4, 22-31 1 Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? 2 On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; 3 beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: 4 ‘To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. 22 The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. 23 Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. 24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth— 26 when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world’s first bits of soil. 27 When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, 29 when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, 30 then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, 31 rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD 8
Psalm: 8
1
O | Lord our | Governor: how glorious is your | name in | all the | earth!
2
Your majesty above the heavens is | yet re|counted: by the | mouths of | babes and | sucklings.

You have founded a strong defence a|gainst your | adversaries: to quell the | enemy | and· the a|venger.

6
Yet you have made us little | less than | gods: and have | crowned us with | glory and | honour.
7

All | sheep and | oxen: and all the | creatures | of the | field, Cont’d… 9

O | Lord our | Governor: how glorious is your | name in | all the | earth!
Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men.
Second Reading: Romans 5.1-5 Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. 1
Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: Let all mortal flesh keep silence NEH 295
1. Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; ponder nothing earthly-minded, for with blessing in his hand, Christ our God to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand. 2. King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood; he will give to all the faithful his own self for heavenly food. 3. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, as the Light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, that the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away. 4. At his feet the six-winged seraph, cherubim, with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Lord Most High! 11
WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA – Sung by ALL
The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 16 beginning at the 12th verse.
‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 12
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church and on web)

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
13

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The Choir sings the Agnus Dei
Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.
The Choir sings: “Alta Trinita Beata Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Final Hymn: O worship the King NEH 433
1. O worship the King all-glorious above, O gratefully sing his power and his love: our shield and defender, the ancient of days, pavilioned in splendour, and girded with praise.
4. Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air, it shines in the light, it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain, and sweetly distils in the dew and the rain.
2. O tell of his might, O sing of his grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; his chariots of wrath the deep thunder-clouds form, and dark is his path on the wings of the storm.
5. Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, in thee do we trust, nor find thee to fail: thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end, our maker, defender, redeemer and friend.
3. The earth with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, thy power hath founded of old, hath stablished it fast by a changeless decree, and round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea.
6. O measureless might, ineffable love, while angels delight to hymn thee above, thy humbler creation, though feeble their lays, with true adoration shall sing to thy praise. Robert Grant 1779–1838

Dear Parishioners, Later in the year- late July we will be embarking on a winter study over 5 weeks written by Canon Graeme Winterton entitled “Is It right? which Way which Truth”. Before then there will be an offering of a five week study called New World Old Faith beginning late April early May. This will be one study group led by Leonie Bird and will meet in the evening during the week. If you would like to be a part of this preliminary study- please fill your name in on the form at the back of the church. This group will be limited to twelve peoplesome details of this study below. Much of the criticism directed at Christianity in our day and age is that it's outdated, old hat. New World, Old Faith takes the position that just because Christianity is based on events of two thousand years ago doesn't mean it is irrelevant today. Quite the contrary - in our multi-everything world it's more relevant than ever! Contributors/writers include: Archbishop Rowan Williams, David Coffey, Joel Edwards and the Revd Dr John Polkinghorne. Dr David Hope introduces the course and Dr Pauline Webb provides the Closing Reflections. Vicar YORK COURSES MAY 2016 - NEW WORLD – OLD FAITH A five session course which explores the place of the Christian faith in relation to some of the crucial issues in today’s world. 5 Sessions: 1. Brave New World? 2. Environment and Ethics 3. Church and Family in Crisis 4. One World – Many Faiths 5. Spirituality and Superstition The course booklet written by Canon John Young includes questions aimed at provoking wide ranging discussion. The group is supplied with 1 CD audiotape, plus course booklets for each participant. Study Session Location: The old Op Shop, Holy Trinity Kew commencing Tuesday 3 May 2016. [Leonie Bird] Study Session times: Tuesday 3 May, Monday 9 May, Tuesday 17 May, Tuesday 24 May & Tuesday 31 May. The May issue of TMA (The Melbourne Anglican) is now available in the foyer/narthex. 26
