Dear Parishioners, The First Letter of Peter tells us that the Lord Jesus is the â€œGood Shepherd and Guardian of our soulsâ€? (1 Peter 2:25). He keeps a close and careful watch over every one of his sheep - his followers who belong to him. He calls each of us personally by name to follow him. He promises to be our guardian and protector from the traps and snares of our enemy, Satan, the deceiver and father of lies (John 8:44). The Lord leads us each day to good pastures - places where we can feed on his word and drink from the well-springs of living water which is his Holy Spirit (John 7:38-39, John 4:14). If we follow and feed on his word and drink from the living water of the Holy Spirit, we will find the nourishment and strength we need to live each day for his glory and honour. THE BAPTISM When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church. Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection. While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a childâ€™s character. In this service of baptism we bring Jessica and Evie into Godâ€™s presence that they may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.

The Baptism party gathers around the font. The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit? A/ I do. Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Jessica and Evie for baptism? A/ I will. Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage them in the life and faith of the Christian community? A/ I will. Q/ As your life will be an example to Jessica and Evie, will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions? A/ I will. Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy? A/ I will. Priest to the congregation: You have heard our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? ALL: WE WILL. Priest: Almighty God lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. AMEN. 14

Prayers and Blessing of the water [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Jessica and Evie may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in them where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom. And now we give you thanks that you have called Jessica and Evie to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. + Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that all who are baptized may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

An affirmation of faith Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming the faith of the church. Do you believe in God the Father? A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, Godâ€™s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? A/: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN. 15

The Baptism Priest: Jessica Elisabeth / Evie Grace, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, AMEN. I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ’s own forever. (Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used in anointing to symbolize being chosen in God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in Christ.) Live as a disciple of Christ; fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. ALL: Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. Priest: God has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. ALL: Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Priest: God has called you into his church. ALL: We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God.

Prayers for the child, parents and godparents Merciful God, in your infinite love you have made a new covenant with us in Jesus Christ, promising to be our God and the God of our children. Enable all who are baptized in your name to live as your faithful people. Fulfil your promises for Jessica and Evie, we pray, and grant that they may grow in your faith and service. We pray for Georga, Brett and Thomas; Fiona Paul and Isabella, that in your Spirit of wisdom, their families may grow in your love, and their homes share in the joy of your eternal kingdom. And we pray for Jessica’s godparents Belinda and Sarah, and Evie’s godparents Angus and Nicola; enable them to share with their godchildren what you have revealed to us of your love in your holy gospel. We ask this in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ, AMEN.

Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Some Prayers Answered: Jocelyn Elliott, for whom the congregation has been praying along with her husband ever since their abduction writes: "My family have been a marvellous comfort and help to me. My son, Stephen, and my daughter and her husband flew to BF (ie. Burkino Faso) as soon as they heard that I was released. The DFAT personnel have also been wonderfully professional and are deliberately acting in a low key manner behind the scenes. Please be assured that we were kindly treated while away but the travel was a bit hard at times. As there are many promises in the bible and especially of deliverance in the psalms, we are of good courage and pray that God will work for Ken's release which we hope, of course, will be sooner rather than later. Dear Parishioners, Later in the year- late July we will be embarking on a winter study over 5 weeks written by Canon Graeme Winterton entitled “Is It right? which Way which Truth”. Before then there will be an offering of a five week study called New World Old Faith beginning late April early May. This will be one study group led by Leonie Bird and will meet in the evening during the week. If you would like to be a part of this preliminary study- please fill your name in on the form at the back of the church. This group will be limited to twelve peoplesome details of this study below. Much of the criticism directed at Christianity in our day and age is that it's outdated, old hat. New World, Old Faith takes the position that just because Christianity is based on events of two thousand years ago doesn't mean it is irrelevant today. Quite the contrary - in our multi-everything world it's more relevant than ever! Contributors/writers include: Archbishop Rowan Williams, David Coffey, Joel Edwards and the Revd Dr John Polkinghorne. Dr David Hope introduces the course and Dr Pauline Webb provides the Closing Reflections.
