Dear Parishioners, By looking back to the first miracle of the great catch of fish, we can recognise the significance of Jesus repeating this miracle again for his apostles. The first miracle took place at the beginning of Jesus' ministry in Galilee when the Lord called Peter to leave all and follow him. After Peter had fished all night and caught nothing, Jesus commanded him to lower his nets. When his nets began to break under the weight of the great haul, Jesus then spoke to Peter and gave him a new calling and mission - from now on he would be "catching people" for the kingdom of God (Luke 5:10). Jesus repeats this miracle for Peter to remind him that he must continue his mission of "catching people" and "making disciples" for the kingdom of Christ. Last week when I talked about Thomas as a cynic in the pew sheet- Neville McCarthy pointed out that Thomas was really more of a skeptic than cynic. I think he was probably somewhere in between. Skeptics at the time and much later who disbelieve the resurrection accounts say the disciples only saw a vision of Jesus. The Gospels, however, give us a vivid picture of the reality of the resurrected and glorified body of the Lord Jesus. Jesus went out of his way to offer his disciples various proofs of his physical resurrection - that he is real and true flesh, not just a spirit or imaginary ghost. Why did Jesus question Peter's love and loyalty three times in front of the other disciples? It must have caused Peter pain and sorrow since he had publicly denied Jesus three times previously. Now Peter, full of remorse and humility, unequivocally stated that he loved his Lord and Master and was willing to serve him whatever it might cost. When Jesus asked Peter "do you love me more than these?" he may have pointed to the boats, nets and other fishing companions. He may have challenged Peter to let go of his career as a fisherman for the task of shepherding the people whom Christ would call to be his disciples. Jesus may have also pointed to the other apostles and to Peter's previous boast: "Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away" (Matthew 26:33). Peter now makes no boast or comparison but humbly responds: "You know I love you. Yours in Christ, Fr Robert 3

Hymn: King of glory, King of peace TiS 201

1. King of glory, King of peace, I will love thee; and, that love may never cease, I will move thee. Thou hast granted my request, thou hast heard me; thou didst note my working breast, thou hast spared me.

3. Seven whole days, not one in seven, I will praise thee; in my heart, though not in heaven, I can raise thee. Small it is, in this poor sort to enrol thee: ev'n eternity's too short to extol thee.

2. Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing thee, and the cream of all my heart I will bring thee. Though my sins against me cried, thou didst clear me; and alone, when they replied, thou didst hear me.

George Herbert 1593-1633

Invocation:

Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. 4

Sentence: To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might for ever and ever. Revelation 5.13 Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

Kyrie eleison

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant) Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day Almighty God, through your only Son you overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: grant that we who celebrate our Lord’s resurrection, may, through the renewing power of your Spirit, rise from the death of sin to the life of righteousness; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Acts 9.1-6 1 Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.3 Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’ 5 He asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ The reply came, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6 But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.’ Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 30 1 I will exalt you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up from the depths: and have not suffered my foes to triumph over me. 2 O Lord my God, I cried to you: and you have made me whole. 3 You brought me back, O Lord, from the land of silence: you saved my life from among those that go down to the Pit. 4 Sing praises to the Lord, all you his faithful ones: and give thanks to his holy name. 5 For if in his anger is havoc, in his good favour is life: heaviness may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. 6 In my prosperity I said ‘I shall never be moved: your goodness, O Lord, has set me on so firm a hill.’ 7 Then you hid your face from me: and I was greatly dismayed. 8 I cried to you, O God: and made my petition humbly to my Lord. 9 ‘What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the Pit: can the dust give you thanks, or declare your faithfulness? 10 ‘Hear, O Lord, and be merciful: O Lord, be my helper.’ 11 You have turned my lamentation into dancing: you have put off my sackcloth and girded me with joy, 12 That my heart may sing your praise and never be silent: O Lord my God, I will give you thanks for ever.

Second Reading: Revelation 5.6-14 6 Then I saw between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders a Lamb standing as if it had been slaughtered, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who was seated on the throne. 8 When he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twentyfour elders fell before the Lamb, each holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 They sing a new song: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slaughtered and by your blood you ransomed for God saints from every tribe and language and people and nation; 10 you have made them to be a kingdom and priests serving our God, and they will reign on earth.’ 11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 singing with full voice, ‘Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honour and glory and blessing!’ 13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing, ‘To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might for ever and ever!’ 14 And the four living creatures said, ‘Amen!’ And the elders fell down and worshipped. Response:

Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. ALLELUIA Sung by Choir & Congregation

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 21 beginning at the 1st verse.

After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. 2 Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples.3 Simon Peter said to them, ‘I am going fishing.’ They said to him, ‘We will go with you.’ They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4 Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Jesus said to them, ‘Children, you have no fish, have you?’ They answered him, ‘No.’ 6 He said to them, ‘Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some.’ So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. 7 That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’ When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the lake.8 But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off.9 When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, ‘Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.’ 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of 1

12

them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ because they knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. 15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ 16 A second time he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’ 17 He said to him the third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’ Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.’ 19 (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

THE BAPTISM When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church. Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, and an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection. While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and the wider circle of family and friends, who are the examples and influence that mould a child’s character. In this service of baptism we bring Sophie into God’s presence that she may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.

The Baptism party gathers around the font. The parents and godparents are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit? A/ I do. Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Sophie for baptism? A/ I will. Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage her in the life and faith of the Christian community? A/ I will. Q/ As your life will be an example to Sophie, will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions? A/ I will. Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy? A/ I will. Priest to the congregation: You have heard our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? ALL: WE WILL. Priest: Almighty God lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. AMEN. 15

Prayers and Blessing of the water [Let us pray:] Grant, merciful God, that Sophie may be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in her where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; and through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who leads us to your kingdom. And now we give you thanks that you have called Sophie to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. + Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that all who are baptized may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

An affirmation of faith Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming the faith of the church. Do you believe in God the Father? A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? A/: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN. 16

The Baptism Priest: Sophie Pamela, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, AMEN. I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ’s own forever. (Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used in anointing to symbolize being chosen in God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in Christ.) Live as a disciple of Christ; fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. ALL: Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. Priest: God has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. ALL: Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Priest: God has called you into his church. ALL: We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God.

Prayers for the child, parents and godparents Merciful God, in your infinite love you have made a new covenant with us in Jesus Christ, promising to be our God and the God of our children. Enable all who are baptized in your name to live as your faithful people. Fulfil your promises for Sophie, we pray, and grant that she may grow in your faith and service. We pray for Janelle and James, that in your Spirit of wisdom, their family may grow in your love, and their home share in the joy of your eternal kingdom. And we pray for Sophie’s godparents Robert and Holly; enable them to share with their godchild what you have revealed to us of your love in your holy gospel. We ask this in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ, AMEN.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand) {Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory Hymn: I danced in the morning TiS 242 1. I danced in the morn-ing when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun; and I came down from heaven and I Danced on the earth, at Bethlehem I had my birth: Dance then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the dance, said he; and I’ll lead you all where ever you may be, and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he. 2. I danced for the scribe and the pharisee, but they would not dance and they wouldn’t follow me. I danced for the fishermen, for James and John, they came with me and the dance went on: 3. I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame: the holy people said it was a shame. They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high, and they left me there on a cross to die: 4. I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black; it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried my body and they thought I’d gone; but I am the dance and I still go on: 5. They cut me down and I leap up high, I am the life that ’ll never, never die; I’ll live in you as you live in me: I am the Lord of the dance, said he: Sydney Carter 1915–2004 alt. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant}

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread.

Agnus Dei We pray together: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Final Hymn: Come, let us to the Lord our God TiS 577

1. Come, let us to the Lord our God with contrite hearts return; our God is gracious, nor will leave the desolate to mourn. 2. His voice commands the tempest forth, and stills the stormy wave, and though his arm be strong to smite 'tis also strong to save. 3. Long has the night of sorrow reigned, the dawn shall bring us light: God shall appear, and we shall rise with gladness in his sight.

4. Our hearts, if God we seek to know, shall know him and rejoice; his coming like the morn shall be, like morning songs his voice. 5. As dew upon the tender herb, diffusing fragrance round; as showers that usher in the spring and cheer the thirsty ground: 6. so shall his presence bless our souls and shed a joyful light; that hallowed morn shall chase away the sorrows of the night. John Morison 1750-98 Hosea 6:1-4

Dear Parishioners, Later in the year- late July we will be embarking on a winter study over 5 weeks written by Canon Graeme Winterton entitled “Is It right? which Way which Truth”. Before then there will be an offering of a five week study called New World Old Faith beginning late April early May. This will be one study group led by Leonie Bird and will meet in the evening during the week. If you would like to be a part of this preliminary study- please fill your name in on the form at the back of the church. This group will be limited to twelve peoplesome details of this study below. Much of the criticism directed at Christianity in our day and age is that it's outdated, old hat. New World, Old Faith takes the position that just because Christianity is based on events of two thousand years ago doesn't mean it is irrelevant today. Quite the contrary - in our multi-everything world it's more relevant than ever! Contributors/writers include: Archbishop Rowan Williams, David Coffey, Joel Edwards and the Revd Dr John Polkinghorne. Dr David Hope introduces the course and Dr Pauline Webb provides the Closing Reflections.
