Dear Parishioners, St Augustine Bishop of Hippo, the great 5th century church father, comments on the signiďŹ cance of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem: "The master of humility is Christ who humbled himself and became obedient even to death, even the death of the cross. Thus he does not lose his divinity when he teaches us humility... What great thing was it to the king of the ages to become the king of humanity? For Christ was not the king of Israel so that he might exact a tax or equip an army with weaponry and visibly vanquish an enemy. He was the king of Israel in that he rules minds, in that he gives counsel for eternity, in that he leads into the kingdom of heaven for those who believe, hope, and love. It is a condescension, not an advancement for one who is the Son of God, equal to the Father, the Word through whom all things were made, to become king of Israel. It is an indication of pity, not an increase in power."1 Yours in Christ, Fr Robert 1) Tractates of John 51: 3-4 in Fathers of the Church. trans JW Rettig 1993 Catholic Church of America Press.

PROCESSION The president greets the people Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU. Introduction The president introduces the celebration using these words: Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, during Lent we have been preparing by works of love and self-sacrifice for the celebration of our Lord’s death and resurrection. Today we come together to being this solemn celebration in union with the Church throughout the world. Christ enters his own city to complete his work as our Saviour, to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Let us go with him in faith and love, so that, united with him in his sufferings, we may share his risen life. The people hold up palms or branches while this prayer is said by the president: God our Saviour, whose Son Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem as Messiah to suffer and to die; let these palms be for us signs of his victory and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AMEN

The Palm Gospel Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke, Chapter 19 GLORY TO YOU, O LORD. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, “Why are you untying it?” just say this: “The Lord needs it.” ’ 32 So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, ‘Why are you untying the colt?’ 34 They said, ‘The Lord needs it.’ 35 Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, 38 saying, 29
‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!’ This is the Gospel of the Lord. PRAISE TO YOU, O CHRIST.

The Procession: Let us go forth, praising Jesus our Messiah. During the procession all hold palms or branches as the hymn is sung: Hymn: All glory, laud and honour
All glory, laud and honour to thee, Redeemer, King, to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.
3. The people of the Hebrews with palms before thee went: our praise and pray’r and anthems before thee we present.
1. Thou art the king of Israel thou David’s royal son, who in the Lord’s name comest, the king and blessèd one.
4. To thee before thy passion they sang their hymns of praise: to thee now high exalted our melody we raise.
2. The company of angels are praising thee on high, and mortal men and all things created make reply.
5. Thou didst accept their praises: accept the pray’rs we bring, who in all good delightest, thou good and gracious king.
5
Greeting: The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU.
(see Ruth 2:4)
Sentence: At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2.10-11 Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Kyrie eleison (Dudman)
6
The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution (Celebrant) Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
~ The Sunday School now departs to the Memorial Chapel. Any children in the congregation are welcome to join them. ~ Prayer of the Day Almighty and everlasting God, of your tender love towards us you sent your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, to take upon him our flesh, and to suffer death upon the cross, that all should follow the example of his great humility: mercifully grant that we may both follow the example of his patience, and also be made partakers of his resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen 7
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-9 The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens-wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. 5 The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. 6 I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. 7 The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8 he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. 9 It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty? All of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up. 4
Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 31:9-18
Thou hast not shut me up into the | hand of the | enemy: but hast set my | feet in a | large | room. 10 Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for | I am in | trouble: and mine eye is consumed for very heaviness; yea my | soul | and my | body. 9
For my life is waxen | old with | heaviness: and my | years | with | mourning. 12 My strength faileth me because of | mine in|iquity: and my | bones | are con|sumed. 11
I became a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially a|mong my | neighbours: and they of mine acquaintance were afraid of me, and they that did see me without con|veyed them|selves | from me. 14 I am clean forgotten, as a dead man | out of | mind: I am become | like a | broken | vessel. 13
For I have heard the blasphemy | of the | multitude: and fear is on every side, while they conspire together against me, and take their counsel to | take a|way my | life. 16 But my hope hath been in | thee, O | LORD: I have said | Thou art | my | God. 15
My time is in thy hand, deliver me from the | hand of mine | enemies: and from | them that | persecute | me. 18 Shew thy servant the | light of thy | countenance: and save me | for thy | mercy's | sake. 17
Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men. 9
Second Reading: Philippians 2:5-11 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-- even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 5
Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: Ride on, ride on in majesty TiS 348
1. Ride on, ride on in majesty; hark, all the tribes hosanna cry! O Saviour, meek, pursue your road with palms and scattered garments strowed.
4. Ride on, ride on in majesty; your last and fiercest strife is nigh; the Father on his sapphire throne awaits his own anointed Son.
5. Ride on, ride on in majesty, 2. Ride on, ride on in majesty, in lowly pomp ride on to die; in lowly pomp ride on to die; bow your meek head to mortal pain, O Christ, your triumphs now begin then take, O God, your power and o’er captive death and conquered reign! sin. 3. Ride on, ride on in majesty; the wingèd squadrons of the sky look down with sad and wondering eyes to see the approaching sacrifice.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 23 beginning at the 1st verse.
Then the assembly rose as a body and brought Jesus before Pilate. 2 They began to accuse him, saying, ‘We found this man perverting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to the emperor, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.’ 3 Then Pilate asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ He answered, ‘You say so.’ 4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, ‘I find no basis for an accusation against this man.’ 5 But they were insistent and said, ‘He stirs up the people by teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to this place.’ 6 When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7 And when he learned that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him off to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. 8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had been wanting to see him for a long time, because he had heard about him and was hoping to see him perform some sign. 9 He questioned him at some length, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11 Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then he put an elegant robe on him, and sent him back to Pilate. 12 That same day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other; before this they had been enemies. 13 Pilate then called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people, 14 and said to them, ‘You brought me this man as one who was perverting the people; and here I have examined him in your presence and have not found this man guilty of any of your charges against him. 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us. Indeed, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 I will therefore have him flogged and release him.’ 18 Then they all shouted out 1
12
together, ‘Away with this fellow! Release Barabbas for us!’ 19 (This was a man who had been put in prison for an insurrection that had taken place in the city, and for murder.) 20 Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again; 21 but they kept shouting, ‘Crucify, crucify him!’22 A third time he said to them, ‘Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no ground for the sentence of death; I will therefore have him flogged and then release him.’ 23 But they kept urgently demanding with loud shouts that he should be crucified; and their voices prevailed. 24 So Pilate gave his verdict that their demand should be granted. 25 He released the man they asked for, the one who had been put in prison for insurrection and murder, and he handed Jesus over as they wished. 26 As they led him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27 A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him. 28 But Jesus turned to them and said, ‘Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For the days are surely coming when they will say, “Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.” 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, “Fall on us”; and to the hills, “Cover us.” 31 For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?’32 Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34 Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.’ And they cast lots to divide his clothing. 35 And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, ‘He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!’ 36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 37 and saying, ‘If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!’ 38 There was also an inscription over him, ‘This is the King of the Jews.’ 39 One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, ‘Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!’ 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, ‘Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.’ 42 Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you 13
come into your kingdom.’ 43 He replied, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.’ 44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 while the sun’s light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, ‘Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.’ Having said this, he breathed his last. 47 When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, ‘Certainly this man was innocent.’ 48 And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. 49 But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
REFLECTION
14
The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Final Hymn: Glory be to Jesus TiS 344
1 Glory be to Jesus, who in bitter pains, poured for me the life blood from his sacred veins.
5 Oft as it is sprinkled on our guilty hearts, Satan in confusion terror-struck departs.
2 Grace and life eternal in that blood I find; blessed be his compassion, infinitely kind.
6 Oft as earth exulting wafts its praise on high, angel hosts rejoicing make their glad reply.
3 Blessed through endless ages be the precious stream, which from endless torment did the world redeem.
7 Let us lift our voices, swell the mighty flood; louder still and louder praise the precious blood.
4 Abel's blood for vengeance pleaded to the skies; but the blood of Jesus for our pardon cries.

Dear Parishioners, I write to thank you for your generous giving of time, talents and treasure for God’s work in our Church in Kew. Particularly in this letter I want to thank those who have made contributions in the year to the finances of the parish through the open plate, via giving envelopes, direct debits to the ADF (Anglican Development Fund) for the benefit of the parish and those who give by direct debit to the parish offertory account. Also many thanks to those who have made generous cash donations to specific projects in the parish. Without these generous financial offerings, professional ministry would surely be reduced. Such ministries as the ministry of the Vicar, the Chaplain, the Director of Music, office administration and Family and Children’s ministry and resources are vital to grow our parish over the next five years. Of course these are backed up by many hours of volunteer time given by good lay and ordained people in the parish to enhance professional ministry, which I give thanks for. All Christian congregations in Victoria and nationally are struggling to grow with ageing congregations and diminishing resources. Those churches who buck the trend are those who engage a wide range of resources and personnel alongside a generous giving of time talents and treasure in positive ways. As we face the next twelve months and into the next five years we have to devise strategies to enhance what we offer within our church and the wider community, which will require careful budgeting for the future. With the advent of our property development well and truly on the near horizon and the need to address major physical property decline in the Vicarage, Halls and Church we need to start providing significant increases in financial giving and of our time and talents, to build up our ministries (especially children and families) and restore our site and its buildings to a real asset basis. Regular consistent giving through the ADF, direct debit from the bank and envelopes, make it much easier for the parish to budget for the future (so please consider these methods if you do not at the moment). As your new Vicar what has struck me has been the great pride and affection our parishioners have for their Church and an affection in the 24
wider community for our special community of faith and its significant buildings. Previous generations have shown an amazing love and commitment for Holy Trinity which we are the inheritors of and custodians. I ask you this week to think about the many gifts God has given you through being a parishioner at Holy Trinity Kew and how God might be calling you to continue to give of your utmost so that others in the future may have the same opportunities for God’s grace that you have received here in this special place. I therefore ask that you seriously consider raising your financial giving by 10% over the next year and that if you ever thought of including Holy Trinity in your will? If you would like to talk to me or the Parish Wardens or the Treasurer about anything I have included in this letter please feel free to approach us. I am confident that the generous nature of our parishioners will continue to grow and benefit this special spiritual place and that the community of faith that presents to the wider community will grow numerically and financially. “The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:6-7) Yours in Christ, Father Robert
