Dear Parishioners, The prodigal could not return to the way things were before, but he was welcomed and reinstated as a son who had been missed much and greatly loved by his father. The wayward son's dramatic change from grief and guilt to forgiveness and restoration expresses beautifully the resurrection from the dead which Jesus makes possible to everyone who believes in him, a rebirth to new life from death. The parable also contrasts mercy and its opposite - unforgiveness. The father who had been wronged, was forgiving. But the eldest son, who had not been wronged, was unforgiving. His unforgiveness turns into spiteful pride and contempt for his brother. And his resentment leads to his isolation and estrangement from the community of forgiven sinners. There is much we can learn from the elder brother in our own dealings with our neighbours. In this parable Jesus gives a vivid picture of God and what God is like. God is truly kinder than any of us. He does not lose hope or give up when we stray from him. He is always on the lookout for those who have a change of heart and want to return. He rejoices in finding the lost and in welcoming them home. Do you know the joy of repentance and the restoration of relationship as a son or daughter of your heavenly Father? Yours In Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: Stand up! Stand up for Jesus! NEH 453

1. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross; lift high his royal banner, it must not suffer loss; from victory unto victory his army he shall lead till every foe is vanquished and Christ is Lord indeed.

3. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, stand in his strength alone: the arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own. Put on the gospel armour, each piece put on with prayer; where duty calls, or danger, be never wanting there.

2. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the trumpet call obey; forth to the mighty conflict in this his glorious day! ye that are men now serve him against unnumbered foes; let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength oppose.

4. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long: this day the noise of battle, the next the victor’s song. To him that overcometh a crown of life shall be; they with the King of Glory shall reign eternally. George Duffield 1818–88

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you. 3

Sentence: God has reconciled us to himself through Christ, and given us the ministry of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5.18 Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN.

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

Kyrie eleison (Dudman Setting)

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness.

God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution (Celebrant) Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day God of compassion, you are slow to anger, and full of mercy, welcoming sinners who return to you with penitent hearts: receive in your loving embrace all who come home to you, and seat them at your bountiful table, that, with all your children, they may feast with delight on all that satisfies the hungry heart. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Saviour, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from Good News Translation and JB Phillips New Testament First Reading: Joshua 5.2-12 2 Then

the LORD told Joshua, “Make some knives out of flint and circumcise the Israelites.” 3 So Joshua did as the LORD had commanded, and he circumcised the Israelites at a place called Circumcision Hill. 46 When the people of Israel left Egypt, all the males were already circumcised. However, during the forty years the people spent crossing the desert, none of the baby boys had been circumcised. Also, by the end of that time all the men who were of fighting age when they left Egypt had died because they had disobeyed the LORD. Just as he had sworn, they were not allowed to see the rich and fertile land that he had promised their ancestors. 7 The sons of these men had never been circumcised, and it was this new generation that Joshua circumcised. 8 After the circumcision was completed, the whole nation stayed in the camp until the wounds had healed. 9 The LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have removed from you the disgrace of being slaves in Egypt.” That is why the place was named Gilgal,[ the name it still has. 10 While the Israelites were camping at Gilgal on the plain near Jericho, they observed Passover on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month. 11 The next day was the first time they ate food grown in Canaan: roasted grain and bread made without yeast. 12 The manna stopped falling then, and the Israelites no longer had any. From that time on they ate food grown in Canaan. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 32

1. Blessed is he whose unrighteousness | is for|given: and whose | sin | is | covered. 2. Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord im|puteth no | sin: and in whose | spirit there | is no | guile. 3. For while I | held my | tongue: my bones consumed away | through my | daily com|plaining. 4. For thy hand is heavy upon me | day and | night: and my moisture is | like the | drought in | summer. 5. I will acknowledge my sin | unto | thee: and mine un|righteousness | have I not | hid. 6. I said I will confess my sins | unto the | Lord: and so thou forgavest the | wickedness | of my | sin. 7. For this shall every one that is godly make his prayer unto thee, in a time when thou | mayest be | found: but in the great water-floods | they shall | not come | nigh him. 8. Thou art a place to hide me in, thou shalt pre|serve me from | trouble: thou shalt compass me a|bout with | songs of de|liverance. 9. I will inform thee and teach thee in the way wherein | thou shalt | go: and I will | guide thee | with mine | eye. 10. Be ye not like to horse and mule, which have no | under*|standing: whose mouths must be held with bit and bridle | lest they | fall up|on thee.

11. Great plagues remain | for the un|godly: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord, mercy embraceth | him on | every | side. 12. Be glad O ye righteous, and rejoice | in the | Lord: and be joyful all | ye that are | true of | heart. Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men.

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5.16-21 16-21 This

means that our knowledge of men can no longer be based on their outward lives (indeed, even though we knew Christ as a man we do not know him like that any longer). For if a man is in Christ he becomes a new person altogether—the past is finished and gone, everything has become fresh and new. All this is God’s doing, for he has reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ; and he has made us agents of the reconciliation. God was in Christ personally reconciling the world to himself—not counting their sins against them—and has commissioned us with the message of reconciliation. We are now Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were appealing direct to you through us. As his personal representatives we say, “Make your peace with God.” For God caused Christ, who himself knew nothing of sin, actually to be sin for our sakes, so that in Christ we might be made good with the goodness of God. Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD 8

Gradual Hymn: Lord Jesus, think on me NEH 70

1. Lord Jesus, think on me, and purge away my sin; from earthborn passions set me free, and make me pure within.

4. Lord Jesus, think on me, nor let me go astray; through darkness and perplexity point thou the heavenly way.

2. Lord Jesus, think on me with care and woe opprest; let me thy loving servant be, and taste thy promised rest.

6. Lord Jesus, think on me, that, when the flood is past, I may the eternal brightness see, and share thy joy at last. Synesius of Cyrene c.375–430 tr. Allen William Chatfield 1808–96

3. Lord Jesus, think on me, amid the battle’s strife; in all my pain and misery be thou my health and life.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you, AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 15 beginning at the 11th verse.

11-19 Then

he continued, “Once there was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the property that will come to me.’ So he divided up his property between the two of them. Before very long, the younger son collected all his belongings and went off to a foreign land, where he squandered his wealth in the wildest extravagance. And when he had run through all his money, a terrible famine arose in that country, and he began to feel the pinch. Then he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country who sent him out into the fields to feed the pigs. He got to the point of longing to stuff himself with the food the pigs were eating and not a soul gave him anything. Then he came to his senses and cried aloud, ‘Why, dozens of my father’s hired men have got more food than they can eat and here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go back to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have done wrong in the sight of Heaven and in your eyes. I don’t deserve to be called your son any more. Please take me on as one of your hired men.”’ 20-24 So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still some distance off, his father saw him and his heart went out to him, and he ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. But his son said, ‘Father, I have done wrong in the sight of Heaven and in your eyes. I don’t deserve to be called your son any more ....’ ‘Hurry!’ called out his father to the servants, ‘fetch the best clothes and put them on him! Put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet, and get that calf we’ve fattened and kill it, and we will have a feast and a celebration! For this is my son—I thought he was dead, and he’s alive again. I thought I had lost him, and he’s found!’ And they began to get the festivities going. 10

25-32 “But

his elder son was out in the fields, and as he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants across to him and enquired what was the meaning of it all. ‘Your brother has arrived, and your father has killed the calf we fattened because he has got him home again safe and sound,’ was the reply. But he was furious and refused to go inside the house. So his father came outside and called him. Then he burst out, ‘Look, how many years have I slaved for you and never disobeyed a single order of yours, and yet you have never given me so much as a young goat, so that I could give my friends a dinner? But when that son of yours arrives, who has spent all your money on prostitutes, for him you kill the calf we’ve fattened!’ But the father replied, ‘My dear son, you have been with me all the time and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and show our joy. For this is your brother; I thought he was dead—and he’s alive. I thought he was lost— and he is found!’”

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

Offertory Hymn: I danced in the morning TiS 242 1. I danced in the morn-ing when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun; and I came down from heaven and I Danced on the earth, at Bethlehem I had my birth: Dance then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the dance, said he; and I’ll lead you all where ever you may be, and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he. 2. I danced for the scribe and the pharisee, but they would not dance and they wouldn’t follow me. I danced for the fishermen, for James and John, they came with me and the dance went on: 3. I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame: the holy people said it was a shame. They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high, and they left me there on a cross to die: 4. I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black; it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back. They buried my body and they thought I’d gone; but I am the dance and I still go on: 5. They cut me down and I leap up high, I am the life that ’ll never, never die; I’ll live in you as you live in me: I am the Lord of the dance, said he: Sydney Carter 1915–2004 alt. Kew Festival Concert, 2:30pm, 13 March 2016, Boroondara Symphonic Band, at HTK CHOIR ROBES FUNDRAISING UPDATE – we have raised $4350 thus far towards replacing the very old choir robes. We are currently investigating the best option for having these made and will be purchasing black and white robes in keeping with the style HTK has always used and for compatibility with the old robes. Initial investigations suggest a price of around $250-300 per chorister for cassock and surplice, ordered from the UK, which should allow the purchase of 15 robes. The March issue of TMA (The Melbourne Anglican) is now available in the foyer/narthex. This issue includes: • An Easter painting on the front cover by the Revds Greg and Sharon Footit: ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega. The beginning and the end.' • An article outlining how the Melbourne Diocese is helping asylum seekers; and a viewpoint by the Dean of Brisbane, Dr Peter Catt, explaining why he offered sanctuary to asylum seekers; • Reports on the recent Trinity College Theological School Conference on mission and evangelism Life in Abundance, including Bishop Stephen Pickard’s call for ‘slow Church’ – a third way of doing mission and evangelism; • ‘Crisis looms if youth ministry not improved’: a report on a recent training day by the Christian Research Association; • Sarah Coakley, renowned Anglican theologian and Norris-Hulse Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University, on how prayer is not about us, but the Spirit praying within; and the ‘Grandfather of Alpha’, Bishop Sandy Millar, reflects on the importance of prayer; • Professor John Pilbrow and Canon Dr Stephen Ames explore the theological implications of the recent discovery of Gravitational Waves; • A tribute to Sydney Carter, the poet and hymn writer who wrote ‘Lord of the Dance’; • Reviews of films Lady in the Van, Risen and Brooklyn. 21
