Dear Parishioners, Jesus' parable of the barren fig trees illustrates his warning about the consequences of allowing sin and corruption to take root in our hearts and minds. Fig trees were a common and important source of food for the people of Palestine. A fig tree normally matured within three years, producing plentiful fruit. If it failed, it was cut down to make room for more healthy trees. The unfruitful fig tree symbolised the outcome of Israel's indifference and lack of response to God's word of repentance and restoration. Jesus' parable depicts the patience of God, but it also contains a warning that we should not presume upon God's patience and mercy indefinitely. God's judgment will come in due course - very soon or later or even much later… what is certain is that will come and we are in great danger of not being ready. A sudden and unexpected death leaves one no time to prepare to settle one's accounts when he or she must stand before the Lord on the day of judgment. Tolerating sinful habits and excusing unrepentant sin and wrongdoing will result in bad fruit, painful discipline, and spiritual disease that leads to death and destruction. The Lord in his mercy gives us both grace (his gracious help and healing) and time to turn away from sin, but that time is right now. If we delay, even for a day, we may discover that grace has passed us by and our time is up. Yours In Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: Praise to the Holiest in the height NEH 439

1. Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise: in all his words most wonderful, most sure in all his ways.

5. O generous love, that he who smote in Man for man the foe, the double agony in Man for man should undergo,

2. O loving wisdom of our God, when all was sin and shame, a second Adam to the fight and to the rescue came.

6. and in the garden secretly, and on the cross on high, should teach his brethren, and inspire to suffer and to die.

3. O wisest love, that flesh and blood, which did in Adam fail, 7. Praise to the Holiest in the should strive afresh against their foe, height, should strive and should prevail; and in the depth be praise: in all his words most wonderful, 4. and that a higher gift than grace most sure in all his ways. should flesh and blood refine, John Henry Newman God’s presence and his very self, 1801–90 and essence all-divine. Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Sentence: ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts,’ says the Lord. Isaiah 55.9 4

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

Kyrie eleison (Dudman Setting)

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution (Celebrant) Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

~ The Sunday School now departs to the Memorial Chapel. Any children in the congregation are welcome to join them. ~ Prayer of the Day O God, the fountain of life, to a humanity parched with thirst you offer the living water that springs from the Rock, our Saviour Jesus Christ: stir up within your people the gift of your Spirit, that we may profess our faith with freshness and announce with joy the wonder of your love. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 6

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Isaiah 55.1-9 Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labour for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. 3 Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. 4 See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. 5 See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. 6 Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; 7 let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the Lord , that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. 1

Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 63:1-9

O God, | you are· my | God: eagerly | will I | seek | you. 2 My soul thirsts for you, my | flesh | longs for you: as a dry and thirsty | land· where no | water | is. 1

So it was when I beheld you | in the | sanctuary: and | saw your | power· and your | glory. 4 For your unchanging goodness is | better· than | life: there|fore my | lips shall | praise you. 3

And so I will bless you as | long as· I | live: and in your name will I | lift my | hands on | high. 6 My longing shall be satisfied as with | marrow· and | fatness: my mouth shall | praise you· with ex|ultant | lips. 5

When I remember you up|on my | bed: when I meditate up|on you· in the | night | watches, 8 How you have | been my | helper: then I sing for joy in the | shadow | of your | wings, 7

9

Then my | soul | clings to you: and | your right | hand up|holds me. Glory be to the Father, and | to the | Son: and | to the | Holy | Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and | ever | shall be: world without | end. | A|men. 8

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 10.1-13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the wilderness. 6 Now these things occurred as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil as they did. 7 Do not become idolaters as some of them did; as it is written, ‘The people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play.’ 8 We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9 We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents. 10 And do not complain as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.11 These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down to instruct us, on whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 So if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall. 13 No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it. 1

Gradual Hymn: O for a closer walk with God NEH 414

1. O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heavenly frame, a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb.

3. The dearest idol I have known, whate’er that idol be, help me to tear it from thy throne and worship only thee.

2. Return, O holy dove, return, sweet messenger of rest! 1. 4. So shall my walk be close with I hate the sins that made thee mourn, God, and drove thee from my breast. calm and serene my frame; so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb. William Cowper 1731–1800

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you, AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 13 beginning at the 1st verse.

13 At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.2 He asked them, ‘Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. 4 Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.’ The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree 6 Then he told this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. 7 So he said to the gardener, “See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?” 8 He replied, “Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig round it and put manure on it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.”’

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Offertory Hymn: Jesus, where’er your people meet TiS 445

1. Jesus, where’er your people meet there they behold your mercy seat, where’er they seek you, you are found and every place is hallowed ground. 2. For you, within no walls confined, are present in the humble mind; such ever bring you where they come, and, going, take you to their home. 3. Dear Shepherd of your chosen few, your former mercies here renew; here to our waiting hearts proclaim the sweetness of your saving name. 4. Here may we prove the power of prayer to strengthen faith and sweeten care, to teach our faint desires to rise, and bring all heaven before our eyes. 5. Lord, we are few, but you are near, your arm can save, your ear can hear; O rend the heavens, come quickly down, and make a thousand hearts your own. William Cowper 1731–1800 alt.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. The choir sings the Agnus Dei

Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The Choir sings: “Thou knowest, Lord, Purcell. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

17

Final Hymn: Come, let us to the Lord our God TiS 577

1. Come, let us to the Lord our God with contrite hearts return; our God is gracious, nor will leave the desolate to mourn. 2. His voice commands the tempest forth, and stills the stormy wave, and though his arm be strong to smite ’tis also strong to save. 3. Long has the night of sorrow reigned, the dawn shall bring us light: God shall appear, and we shall rise with gladness in his sight.

4. Our hearts, if God we seek to know, shall know him and rejoice; his coming like the morn shall be, like morning songs his voice. 5. As dew upon the tender herb, diffusing fragrance round; as showers that usher in the spring and cheer the thirsty ground: 6. so shall his presence bless our souls and shed a joyful light; that hallowed morn shall chase away the sorrows of the night. John Morison 1750–98

CHOIR ROBES FUNDRAISING UPDATE – we have raised $4350 thus far towards replacing the very old choir robes. We are currently investigating the best option for having these made and will be purchasing black and white robes in keeping with the style HTK has always used and for compatibility with the old robes. Initial investigations suggest a price of around $250-300 per chorister for cassock and surplice, ordered from the UK, which should allow the purchase of 15 robes. 5-session COURSE - LENT 2016 – commencing Sunday February 14. Booklets at the back of the church $10. Please place your name on the list. THE PSALMS - prayers for today's church an ecumenical course in five sessions for discussion groups & individuals Course Synopsis

The ancient poems we call Psalms are over 2000 years old. They were written in very different times from our own when humans could travel at the speed of a camel - not at the speed of sound. But these songs have stood the test of time for they address many of the problems we still face: violence, injustice, anger - and bewilderment. Why do the wicked prosper? Where is God when we suffer? In this 5-session course, Bishop Stephen Cottrell - a prolific and popular author - reflects on the psalms in general (and five psalms in particular). He invites us to join him as he does so. Five Sessions: Session One Session Two Session Three Session Four Session Five
