Dear Parishioners, The Gospel of Luke tells us that Jesus chose to publicly announce his mission in the synagogue at Nazareth. The people there were familiar with Jesus since it was his custom to regularly attended the weekly Sabbath service. Jesus was also known by many in Nazareth as a "carpenter" (Mark 6:3) and "son of Joseph" (Luke 4:21). When the leader of the synagogue called on Jesus to read from the book of the prophet Isaiah, Jesus chose to read Isaiah's description (Isaiah 61:1-2). Isaiah had prophesied that the Messiah would be sent by God and anointed in the power of the Holy Spirit to preach "good news" and bring healing, blessing, and freedom to all who were oppressed. Jesus awakened their hope in God's promises when he announced that this word was now being fulfilled in his very own person. Luke’s Gospel tells us that the people of Nazareth spoke well of him and received his "gracious word" with awe and wonder. But they also openly questioned how the "son of Joseph" would fulfil this Messianic mission (Luke 4:22). The Lord Jesus speaks this same word to each of us today - he comes to bring us healing and redemption, pardon and freedom from the oppression of sin, despair, hopelessness, and destruction. Do you believe his word with expectant faith and trust, or with doubt and indifference? The Lord will not refuse to pour out his Spirit on all who trust in him. Yours in Christ, Fr Robert

Hymn: Praise with joy the world’s Creator TiS 179
1. Praise with joy the world’s Creator, God of justice, love and peace, source and end of human knowledge, force of greatness without cease. Celebrate the Maker’s glory, power to rescue and release.
3. Praise the Spirit sent among us, liberating truth from pride, forging bonds where race or gender, age or nation dare divide. Celebrate the Spirit’s treasure — foolishness none dare deride.
2. Praise the Son who feeds the hungry, frees the captive, finds the lost, heals the sick, upsets religion, fearless both of fate and cost. Celebrate Christ’s constant presenceFriend and Stranger, Guest and Host.
4. Praise the Maker, Son and Spirit, one God in community, calling Christians to embody oneness and diversity. Thus the world shall yet believe, when shown Christ’s vibrant unity. John L. Bell 1949– and Graham Maule 1958– Words from Wild Goose Songs 1, Heaven Shall Not Wait by permission Wild Goose Publications
Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you.
And also with you. 4
Sentence: Jesus read from the prophet Isaiah: ‘The Spirit of the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives.’ Luke 4.18 Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’
Kyrie eleison (Dudman Setting)

The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution (Celebrant) Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day Life-giving God, who sent your Son Jesus to proclaim your kingdom and to teach with authority: anoint us with your Spirit, that we too may bring good news to the poor, bind up the broken-hearted, and proclaim liberty to the captive; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Nehemiah 8.1-3, 5-6, 8-10 all the people gathered together into the square before the Water Gate. They told the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord had given to Israel. 2 Accordingly, the priest Ezra brought the law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could hear with understanding. This was on the first day of the seventh month. 3 He read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law. 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 Then Ezra blessed the Lord , the great God, and all the people answered, ‘Amen, Amen’, lifting up their hands. Then they bowed their heads and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground. 8 So they read from the book, from the law of God, with interpretation. They gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. 9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, ‘This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep.’ For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. 10 Then he said to them, ‘Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions of them to those for whom nothing is prepared, for this day is holy to our Lord ; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.’ 1
Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD 8
Psalm: 19 The heavens declare the glory of God: and the firmament proclaims his handiwork; 2 One day tells it to another: and night to night communicates knowledge. 3 There is no speech or language: nor are their voices heard; 4 Yet their sound has gone out through all the world: and their words to the ends of the earth. 5 There he has pitched a tent for the sun: which comes out as a bridegroom from his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run his course. 6 Its rising is at one end of the heavens, and its circuit to their farthest bound: and nothing is hidden from its heat. 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul: the command of the Lord is true, and makes wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, and gives light to the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, and endures for ever: the judgements of the Lord are unchanging, and righteous every one. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold: sweeter also than honey, than the honey that drips from the comb. 11 Moreover, by them is your servant taught: and in keeping them there is great reward. 12 Who can know their own unwitting sins?: O cleanse me from my secret faults. 13 Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the mastery over me: so I shall be clean, and innocent of great offence. 14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight: O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. 1

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12.12-31 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.14 Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot were to say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear were to say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many members, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you’, nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’ 22 On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and those members of the body that we think less honourable we clothe with greater honour, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; 24 whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honour to the inferior member, 25 that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honoured, all rejoice together with it.27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. 12

Gradual Hymn: God of mercy, God of grace TiS 452
1. God of mercy, God of grace, show the brightness of your face; shine upon us, Saviour, shine, fill your church with light divine; and your saving health extend to the earth’s remotest end. 2. Let the people praise you, Lord! be by all that live adored; let the nations shout and sing glory to their Saviour king; at your feet their tribute pay, and your holy will obey. 3. Let the people praise you, Lord! earth shall then its fruits afford; God to us his blessing give, we to God devoted live: all below, and all above, one in joy and light and love. Henry Francis Lyte 1793–1847 alt. from Psalm 67

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD.
ALLELUIA – Sung by ALL
The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 4 beginning at the 14th verse.
Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15 He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18 ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’ 20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 Then he began to say to them, ‘Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’ 14
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church and on web) The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Offertory Hymn: Songs of thankfulness and praise NEH 56
1. Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to thee we raise, manifested by the star to the sages from afar; branch of royal David's stem in thy birth at Bethlehem; anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest.
4. Sun and moon shall darkened be, stars shall fall, the heavens shall flee; Christ will then like lightning shine, all will see his glorious sign; all will then the trumpet hear, all will see the Judge appear; thou by all wilt be confessed, God in man made manifest.
2. Manifest at Jordan's stream, Prophet, Priest and King supreme; and at Cana, wedding guest, in thy Godhead manifest; manifest in power divine, changing water into wine; anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest.
5. Grant us grace to see thee, Lord, mirrored in thy holy Word; may we imitate thee now, and be pure, as pure art thou; that we like to thee may be at thy great Epiphany; and may praise thee, ever blest, God in man made manifest.
3. Manifest in making whole palsied limbs and fainting soul; manifest in valiant fight, quelling all the devil's might; manifest in gracious will, ever bringing good from ill; anthems be to thee addressed, God in man made manifest. 15

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION {Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, For we all share in the one bread. Agnus Dei We pray together: Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace.
Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving.
Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind.

Final Hymn: Now let us from this table rise TiS 530
1. Now let us from this table rise renewed in body, mind and soul; with Christ we die and live again, his selfless love has made us whole. 2. With minds alert, upheld by grace, to spread the Word in speech and deed, we follow in the steps of Christ, at one with all in hope and need. 3. To fill each human house with love, it is the sacrament of care; the work that Christ began to do we humbly pledge ourselves to share. 4. Then give us grace, Companion God, to choose again the pilgrim way, and help us to accept with joy the challenge of tomorrow’s day. NEW 5-session COURSE - LENT 2016 THE PSALMS - prayers for today's church an ecumenical course in five sessions for discussion groups & individuals Course Synopsis The ancient poems we call Psalms are over 2000 years old. They were written in very different times from our own when humans could travel at the speed of a camel - not at the speed of sound. But these songs have stood the test of time for they address many of the problems we still face: violence, injustice, anger - and bewilderment. Why do the wicked prosper? Where is God when we suffer? In this 5-session course, Bishop Stephen Cottrell - a prolific and popular author - reflects on the psalms in general (and five psalms in particular). He invites us to join him as he does so. 21
