Dear Parishioners, It was good for Jane, Darcey and myself to have break after Christmas and to catch up with our wider family. Over recent times Jane’s brother Scott and niece Kirra who we pray for in the pew sheet both have had brain tumours of the cancerous kind. Kirra who is 33 and recently returned from Vanuatu where she has been doing aid work on behalf of the Red Cross has had a large operation to remove her tumour and is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment. So far things are progressing well. Scott’s (50) tumour sadly could not be removed and he is undergoing similar treatment to Kirra with a less optimistic prognosis. I ask you for your prayers and its with those thoughts in mind that I approach the Gospel today. Do we recognise the glory and presence of the Lord Jesus in our lives? God often reveals his glory to us in the unlikeliest and challenging of places - in a cold stable at Bethlehem, at a village wedding party in Cana, on a bloody cross at Golgotha, or on the road to Emmaus. Jerome, an early church bible scholar and translator (c. 347-420 AD), reflects: “Where is Jesus? He is already here offering himself to us. 'In the middle,' he says, 'among you he stands, whom you do not recognise' (Cf. John 1:26) 'The kingdom of God is in your midst' (Mark 1:15). Faith beholds Jesus among us. If we are unable to seize his hand, let us prostrate ourselves at his feet. If we are unable to reach his head, let us wash his feet with our tears. Our repentance is the perfume of the Saviour. See how costly is the compassion of the Saviour.” (1) This miracle at Cana that we read signifies the "new rich wine" of the Gospel and it points to the “wine of the new covenant” and the “bread of life” which Jesus provides for his disciples in the Lord’s Supper or Eucharist. It also points to the Messianic banquet which Jesus will provide at the end of the age when he comes again in his glory. The miracles of Jesus demonstrate the power of God's love and mercy for his people. God's kindness knows no limits. And the ultimate expression of his love is revealed in the person of his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Do you thirst for God and for the abundant life and blessings he offers to you? Come, let us take this Holy Sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. BAPTISED CHRISTIANS WHO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION IN THEIR OWN CHURCH ARE INVITED TO SHARE COMMUNION WITH US. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind. 13

They were written in very different times from our own when humans could travel at the speed of a camel - not at the speed of sound. But these songs have stood the test of time for they address many of the problems we still face: violence, injustice, anger - and bewilderment. Why do the wicked prosper? Where is God when we suffer? In this 5-session course, Bishop Stephen Cottrell - a prolific and popular author reflects on the psalms in general (and five psalms in particular). He invites us to join him as he does so. He is a hymn writer, author and occasional broadcaster, but retains a primary passion for congregational song. John is based in Glasgow and works with his colleagues in the areas of music, worship and spirituality. Fr Timothy Radcliffe OP is Director of the Las Casas Institute, Blackfriars, Oxford. He joined the English Province of the Dominican Order in 1965, and was ordained a priest in 1971. Besides teaching and preaching, Fr Timothy was involved in the Peace 16
movement and in ministry to people with AIDS. An itinerant preacher and lecturer, he was awarded the Michael Ramsey Prize for theological writing in 2007. Revd Prebendary Rose Hudson-Wilkin BPhil Ed Rose was born and grew up in Montego Bay, Jamaica. She was ordained deacon in 1991 and ordained to the priesthood in 1994. She presently serves as a priest in Hackney – North East London. In 2007 she was appointed as a Chaplain to Her Majesty the Queen and in 2010, she became the 79th Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons, the first female appointed to that position. Revd Dr Jane Leach Jane is the Principal of Wesley House, Cambridge, having previously served as a Circuit Methodist Minister. She has published articles and books on theological education, pilgrimage and pastoral supervision. She teaches and supervises in practical theology for the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University. Jane is an ordained Presbyter of the Methodist Church in Britain and a regular broadcaster on Radio 4's Thought for the Day. The course booklet is written by Bishop Stephen Cottrell. BISHOP STEPHEN COTTRELL was consecrated as Bishop of Chelmsford in 2010. Before ordination he worked in the film industry, and for a year at St Christopher's Hospice in Sydenham. A member of the Governing Body of the College of Evangelists, he is the author of numerous books. The course CD is produced by Canon Simon Stanley. CANON SIMON STANLEY is a Co-founder of York Courses and interviews the participants. He is a Canon Emeritus of York Minster, and a former BBC producer/presenter. He has also written a booklet on the Sacraments.
