Dear Parishioners, Some notes on Advent Wreaths, candles and colours: The concept of the Advent wreath originated among German Lutherans in the 16th Century. The use of spruce to decorate the wreath give us clue as to its origins. However, it was not until three centuries later that the modern Advent wreath took shape. In the Anglican church, blue, violet or purple are the historic liturgical colours for three of the four Sundays of Advent and are the traditional colours for penitential seasons hence the three purple candles in the Advent wreath at Holy Trinity. Rose is the colour for the Third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday from the Latin word meaning "to rejoice"—also from the first line of the traditional entrance prayer (called the Introit) “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say rejoice.” and is our Epistle reading for today (Phil 4:4-8) for the Eucharist of the third Sunday of Advent. This is the one joyful glimpse of the coming incarnation before Christmas. The white candle in the centre of the wreath symbolises Christmas, sometimes known as the "Christ Candle.” Concerning other matters, please be advised that the Rev’d Jessica Cheung has resigned her position as assistant priest at Holy Trinity Kew with special responsibility for the congregation at Trinity Grammar School Chapel to increase her time with the congregations at St Paul’s Cathedral and St Jame’s Ivanhoe. Jessica has served in this capacity for five years at Holy Trinity and has helped to grow this particular congregation numerically and spiritually. The Rev’d Rick Cheung will be taking on a supervisory role and will be an associate priest at Holy Trinity working alongside Michael Wong who will working as an Honorary Lay Minister with the Trinity Grammar School Chapel congregation which will take effect from the 7th February 2016. The Nicene Creed Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 7

We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Confession Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Baptised Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own church are invited to share communion with us. The consecrated wine may be received: a) from the common cup which is the tradition of the Anglican Church since the Reformation (as outlined in the Book of Common Prayer 1662) by drinking or intinction of the bread. b) from an individual glass upon request. Or you may choose to receive the bread only as Holy Communion in one kind. 11

We really need more help with breakfasts and especially morning teas. If we don't get more help with the morning teas (where we need supervision with all the children around) they will have to be stopped which would be very sad, as it is a nice sharing time. Saturday 6pm Service: Please be advised that ongoing the 6pm Saturday service will only be on the 1st Saturday of the month beginning in February on a trial for 6 months, owing to patchy attendance, with four occasions where no-one turned up at all over the last nine months. The Vicar and Parish Wardens. New Daylight Notes – Please pick up your notes and indicate if you want to continue next year. Cost $42. Carol Fraser Trinity Times – Copies of Trinity Times have been bundled and are at the back of the Church. Please take those that you can deliver. Thank you. Assistance with caring I am seeking assistance from members of the parish with being in the Vicarage with my wife, Susan, while she is asleep in the afternoon. Currently I am not able to get out except to do the relatively mundane tasks of shopping and the like. It would be great if I could have a 2-3 hour period once a week to enable me to exercise and recreate, perhaps even go the movies. It would only involve being in the Vicarage as Susan is asleep from 2 / 2.30 pm until 5 30 pm when her evening carer arrives. I would always be back before then.
